Chapter 1 - The Group
"If you still talk about them, you still care."
"Immy, this isn't fair! You know I don't care about him anymore. He is a prick!" I huffed, brushing my hair out of my face and rolling my eyes at my friend.
"Katia, you know I'm right. And he's not that bad. He can just be a bit... annoying," Imogen's dark blue eyes became frustrated and she looked away from me.
"Ever since he became part of the popular group he has changed. I like the old Tristan, not this one."
"We should get back," she changed the subject and I had to laugh. This was her way of saying she was done with the conversation. As usual, we were at an impasse.
We started back toward the oval, where our 'group' always sat.
As we approached the circle, Immy and I rolled our eyes simultaneously as we saw Cody and Suvi next to each other, wrapped in their own little bubble.
It was so obvious that they liked each other, they just needed to date already!!
"HEY GUYS!" Immy shouted, getting back to her loud, bubbly, smiley self. She flicked her brown hair over her shoulder as she went to sit next to Jesse.
Being the awkward person I am, I sat down next to Lachie, one of the other awkward people in the group. He offered me a stupid face and I responded by poking my tongue out at him and rolling my eyes.
One of the reasons I was so quiet in the group was the amount of people, especially the attractive guys. I mean, I wouldn't date any of them, but my god they were nice to look at!
There was Ethan, Lachie, Jesse, Cody, Jayden and Caleb. What I loved about them was that they were so different from each other.
"KATIA!" Some shouted, helping me snap out of my thinking daze. I blinked a few times and realized there were two hands on my shoulders from someone standing behind me, and half the group grew stiff, the other smiled in greeting at the person now standing beside me.
I knew who it was just from their reactions. I took a deep breath. "Yes?" I turned to face the one and only, Tristan Atkins - also known as my ex boyfriend.
"Why do you always do that? Zone out, I mean," he flopped down, his dark blonde hair flipping in front of his face, completely unaware of everyone's cautious gaze.
They were only cautious because he wasn't being the usual prick we were used to. It was strange.
He must want something.
I shrugged and turned to Lachie, begging him with my eyes to talk to me about anything, just to get Tristan away from me.
"You've got jap next, don't you?" Lachie asked as casually as he could in the situation.
"Ya. Can you come to my locker? I've still got your textbook from PE," I replied truthfully, even though I could have just given it to him after school.
"Uh yeah, sure." He replied hesitantly, looking over my shoulder at Tristan.
"Wait, Katia. I actually wanted to talk to you. Have you got a minute?" Tristan got up as I did and I took in a deep breath.
I had heard earlier that day that Tristan needed to talk to me and I had avoided him all day; but apparently my 'zoning out' stuffs up my avoiding schedule.
I let out my breath in a huff as I muttered "Sure."
Tristan led me to about ten metres away from my group and I could feel every one of their eyes on our backs.
"Katia," Tristan started, turning to face me.
"What?" I snapped, my anger from the past two years coming back.
"Wow. What was that for?" He asked, completely shocked, brushing his fingers through his 'Justin Bieber fringe'.
"Look, Tris. To be completely honest, you have been an absolute douche to me and half my friends over the past two years. I don't' want to hear what you have to say." I said in a levelled voice, my anger seeping through my voice in a menacing way.
My brother had taught me how to do that. He said it scares people more than yelling.
"I've been a douche? Well what do you expect when I'm still trying to get over you!" Tristan nearly yelled.
My eyes widened in surprise. I was not expecting that.
"Tristan. It's been two years and we have both changed. You know nothing about me anymore and I know nothing about you. You need to get over it." I told him, leaving no room for arguments as I turned on my heel and walked back to my friends.
It was over.
"So... How'd it go?" Lachie asked smirking and raising an eyebrow.
"Oh ya.. Fantastic," I grumbled, making everyone laugh.
"What did he want to talk to you about?" Jayden asked from across the circle, a small smirk beginning to appear on his lips.
I glared at him jokingly then replied. "I actually have no idea, I kind of didn't let him talk," I said and Jayden laughed.
"Of course you didn't," he winked and I poked my tongue out at him.
After a few more minutes of talk the bell rang, signalling the end of lunch.
We all got up and headed towards our lockers.
I walked with Caleb, as we were in the same homeroom so our lockers were next to each other. We were talking about nothing in particular but he kept smirking knowingly at me.
"Why do I have a feeling that you know something?" I asked, looking up at him as I opened my locker.
"Because I do." A broad smile appeared on his face and I narrowed my eyes.
"Well, what do you know??" I demanded, getting frustrated with his behaviour.
"I know why Tristan wanted to talk to you," he responded, rolling his eyes because he could see that I was becoming impatient.
That was the good and bad thing about Caleb. We had been friends for as long as I could remember and he knew me so well. It was useful at times like now, because he knew I was getting impatient and he wouldn't continue to torture me.
"He was going to ask you out," he smirked, but I knew he wasn't lying.
"What?!?" I shrieked, then covered my mouth with my hand.
That was a bit loud.
"Yeah yeah I know. How about me and Jay come over to yours tonight and we can talk about it," Caleb said, knowing exactly what to say to shut me up.
The reason he mentioned Jay was that we had all grown up together and it was just how everything worked. Those two were my best friends and they always had been.
"Sounds great! See ya later," I smiled as he began to walk away, but then I remembered something.
"Hey Caleb!" I shouted to get him to stop as I ran after him.
"I have to pick up my new board after school, I should only be half an hour." I explained and he smiled down at me.
"That's fine. We'll let ourselves in."
"Okay, see ya!" I smiled, walking back to my locker to get my books.
I had to rush to class if I didn't want to be late, so I quickly grabbed all the books I thought I needed and all but ran to my next class.
When I got there, I could see Miss Okuda had already started teaching. I quietly pushed open the door and smiled guiltily at her.
"What do you say?" She smiled at me, rolling her eyes because I was always late.
"Osokunatte sumimasen," I apologized and she nodded in approval.
With the amount of times I had to say that in a week, I think it would be pretty hard to forget.
I walked to the back of the class and flopped in the in between Jayden and Immy. On the other side of Imogen was Ally, who was another one of our friends. We had become close with her when we all went to Japan for a two week "educational trip".
"Late," all three of them whispered under their breaths at the same time and I let out a small chuckle.
"Do you expect anything else?" I responded, not looking at any of them as I got out my notebook and started copying what was on the board.
After Miss Okuda had finished explaining and had given us a worksheet to do, we started really talking.
This was one of the many reasons Miss Okuda was our favourite teacher. She didn't care if we talked, as long as we listened to her when she was talking and did our work; which we all did because we had so much respect for her.
"You're coming over tonight by the way," I informed Jayden, translating the sentence on the sheet in front of me.
"Not even going to give me a choice?" He asked and even though I wasn't looking at him, I knew the idiot was smirking.
"Nope!" I smiled, still not looking up to him.
"Is the other idiot coming too?" He asked, his voice light and happy as per usual.
"Ya," I nodded, moving onto the Kanji section of the worksheet.
"Jeez Katia, I was fine with just Jayden but now you're doing both of them??" Immy asked, faking being shocked.
"Wow, I thought you had more class than that," Ally teased, fixing her curly blonde hair which was now up in a ponytail.
I rolled my eyes at both of the girls on my left. "Ya, you know me. One guy is just not enough!"
"Oh come on babe, you know you only include Caleb because you don't want him to feel left out," Jayden teased, slinging his arm over my shoulder.
I didn't have anything to respond so I just started laughing, the other three laughing with me.
"You know I don't mind you talking, but at least use Japanese sometimes," Okuda sensei smiled from the front of the class, talking to everyone I think.
I mean, there were only six people in our class, but we got really loud sometimes, meaning Okuda sensei had just heard our entire conversation.
Honestly, I didn't care. I'm sure she has heard stranger.
I nodded in agreement then got back to work, but Ally of course continued talking.
"So, Katia... You heard Okuda sensei! You have to talk about it in Japanese!" She smirked and I knew what she was asking. We always said it to confuse Jayden. He still hadn't figured out what it meant.
"Aah. Totemo chiisaii desu. Demo, Caleb kun no chin chin wa totemo ookii desu!" Ally burst laughing along with Immy, and Jayden frowned in confusion.
"I don't like you two teasing me," he pouted, his lower lip jutting out.
"Suck it up," I smiled at him and he rolled his eyes.
A few minutes later we were all packing up when Okuda sensei started talking.
"Minnasan, kite kudasai," she started, to get everyone's attention. "So, as usual you all need to do an oral presentation on the content of this unit. You can write it yourself but it needs to be a minimum of ten sentences each. This will be presented out the front of class next Friday. Daijoubu desuka?" She explained and we all nodded.
"Hai, daijoubu desu," I smiled and then left the classroom.
