Revised Chapter Four

AS THE SUN STARTED to fall toward the horizon, the eeriness of the jungle rose. The long, dark shadows dancing in the wind, made you paranoid. You hugged Zach's jacket tighter around you, trying to hide the goosebumps rising on your skin.

You longed for the comfort and safety of your warm bed, Liam's hugs and Rift's jokes, even Owen's scoldings. You just wanted something familiar.

Zach fell in step beside you, pulling you from your heavy thoughts, "Hey."

"Hello," was your half-hearted response, your eyes never leaving Gray's bouncing curls.

"I'm pretty sure I see a building up ahead," he said.

You squinted; you could make out the silhouette of a building through the haze. "Nice, maybe there's someone there. Or at least a phone or something."

"Yeah," he nodded.

"Zach?"

"Yeah?"

"Why are you being so... this?"

"What?"

"I don't know," you shrugged, searching for the words, "so nice? Uh, gentle? I don't know. When I met you, you didn't seem much like the soft kind of guy."

You heard him sigh, his voice dropping to a low whisper, "Gray and I had a fight on the monorail ride to Jurassic World. Our parents, they're divorcing. He's not handling it very well, and I... I don't think I am, either. So I thought that maybe... maybe I could try to be better, at least on this trip. And then I nearly killed us, and I just..."

"Hey, it's okay. It's not your fault," you reached out to brush his arm, and he caught your hand in his. His grip was sweaty, but warm and firm.

"I just want this all to go away."

"Hey, guys!" Gray started bouncing on his feet, breaking out into a sprint. Then he stumbled, and fell.

Zach stifled a laugh as you dashed forward, dropping to your knees beside Gray. You scanned him over, checking him for injuries. He had a few scrapes and a fresh bump on his head, but was otherwise okay.

"You need to be more careful," you chastised.

"Guys?"

"I'm sorry, I tripped over this--step?"

"Guys?"

You looked at where Gray's foot was, only to find an overgrown stone. Was it shaped like a step?

"Guys!"

You finally turned to face the exasperated Zach as he was gesturing toward a dilapidated building resting in a clearing a few yards up the stone steps, overgrown with vast flora.

"Whoa," Gray murmured, his previous fall forgotten as he jumped up to bolt up the steps.

"Gray, wait! There could be animals inside!" you darted after him, trying hard not to trip on the roots that broke through the stone beneath you.

"Guys!" Zach grumbled as he followed after the two of you.

You met Gray at the large doors, which were propped open by the thick roots of a tree. The inside was shrouded in shadows and foliage, and it gave you an uneasy feeling. But that, of course, didn't falter the enthusiastic Gray as he dove into the structure.

"Gray--" you groaned.

"It might be useful to check out," Zach shrugged, "Maybe a phone or radio or something."

"Or something really, really old," you grumbled, but followed as he entered.

You flinched when Zach lit a torch using rags, a stick, and Gray's matches from his seemingly endless fanny pack. You studied the walls as he raised the torch, spreading flickering firelight across the space.

You heard some small animals go skittering at their intrusion, the hair on the back of your neck rising. You instinctively moved closer to Zach, accidentally bumping into his arm as you did so. You flushed, going to move away, but his fingers caught yours.

You surveyed the dim area; what remaining columns stood, cracked and covered in ivy. Debris and rubble was strewn across the floor, accompanied by ferns and flowers that pushed through the foundation. Vines crawled up the walls, drawing your eye to a curious, faded mural along the left wall.

From what you could see of it, it was of a parasaurolophus and a velociraptor. You ran your hand over the painting, amazed at the resemblance of the velociraptor to Foxtrot, "It's like going back in time."

"Some rundown building make you feel like you're time-traveling, but dinosaurs don't?" Zach teased from over your shoulder. He was standing close enough for you to feel his clothes brushing yours.

You tucked strands of hair behind your ear as you put some distance between you, releasing his hand nervously. His brow lifted at your shyness, but he shook his head with a smile.

"This must have been a part of the old park," Gray commented, standing on the other side of the room. He was searching a shelf, curiously touching the items.

"Old park?" Zach asked.

"You don't know?" You tilted your head in surprise; you thought everyone had heard of Jurassic Park.

"Jurassic World's predecessor? Jurassic Park?" Gray was also bewildered as he plucked a set of binocular-like equipment from the shelf. They had dulled stripes on them, "The first park was a failure due to sabotage. Someone cut the fences' power, causing a mass escapage of the dinosaurs. They killed most of the workers, and a lawyer. That one didn't go well for Hammond."

He put the binoculars up to his eyes, but then dropped them again to wipe the lenses, "Apparently the island was supposed to be nuked after that, but I don't think it actually happened, considering the opening of Jurassic World. Besides, there's been several more accounts of people getting stranded here or on Isla Sorna, even the Chicago incident happened after."

"Oh, I heard about that one," Zach blurted. "They brought a t-rex to Chicago and it went on a rampage, right?"

"So you heard about a random t-rex brought to America, and you never thought anything more of it?" You laughed, Gray giggling with you. Zach's face went red.

"Look, I didn't actually believe any of it!"

"There's plenty of live footage of it," Gray argued, stifling a laugh.

"Oh, whatever," Zach rolled his eyes indignantly, turning his back on both of you.

"Anyway," Gray's amusement began to subside, "at this point, I'm pretty sure every park is doomed to fail. I mean, look at this one; there's a giant white dinosaur running free right now."

Gray brought back on the gravity of the situation, and you cleared your throat nervously. You glanced outside; the sun was far too close to the horizon now. You tried not to be frantic as you searched for a radio or a phone of sorts, anything to get into contact with anyone.

The three of you had drifted apart while rummaging through the rubble and shelves, at least until a spider much too large for your liking dropped onto your forearm. You screamed and flailed, even after it was flung away from you. You could still feel its creepy little legs on you as you viciously itched the spot.

"You okay?" Zach was by your side in a heartbeat, and all you had to do was point for him to crush the arachnid beneath his shoe. "There, the big bad spider is gone. Better now?"

"Oh, you ass," you growled, shoving him away playfully.

"Guys! Come, look at what I found!"

You and Zach shared a glance, and he grumbled, "I swear, if it's another stupid dinosaur figurine, I'm gonna scream."

You giggled, following him into the next room, which was some sort of garage. A pair of incredibly old Jeeps were collecting dust, which you ran a finger over to discover it was a lot of dust.

"They're ancient."

"Hey, Gray?" You looked over your shoulder to the brothers, watching them meet each other's gaze with a grin, "Think we could fix one of 'em up like we did with Uncle Ben?"

"Uh, yeah!" Gray was already bouncing again.

"Then let's get her up and running," Zach peeled off his shirt, tossing it at you with a wink before popping open the hood to the Jeep.

You flushed, drinking in the sight of him shirtless before shame made you tear your gaze from him. You tossed his sweaty shirt to the side, before taking his jacket off due to the humidity of the room.

You sat off to the side; you only had a handful of knowledge when it came to vehicles, thanks to your brother, but you definitely wouldn't be much help to the brothers as they seemed to be on top of it. Watching them work together so seamlessly, it almost gave you the elusion of just a normal summer day. It made you smile.

You decided not to waste any time as you continued to search the area in hopes of finding anything useful. As you did so, you discovered an old-fashioned hand-held radio, and began to toy with the settings. It released a loud static that startled you, to which you shut it off and abandoned it.

It didn't take too long before you heard Zach say, "Alright, Gray. Go ahead and start her up."

At first, nothing happened. Then Gray tried again as you returned to them, grabbing Zach's shirt and jacket from the ground. This time, the engine roared to life, and both the boys began to cheer proudly.

You handed Zach his clothing back, and he smirked, offering a fist bump. You returned the gesture, "You know, I gave you my shirt so it didn't get all dirty."

He shook dirt and debris from it. You shrugged, concealing your smile.

"C'mon, guys!" Gray honked the horn, then he scrambled to the backseat as you and Zach climbed in.

"Do you know how to drive?" you asked him as he pulled his shirt over his head.

He sent you a wink, putting the Jeep in reverse and stomping on it.

"I've played enough racing simulators."

You didn't have time to yell in response as you rushed to clip on your seatbelt, urging Gray to do so too. Then you found the handle conveniently placed beside the door, and grabbed it, your grip tight enough to make your knuckles white. You squeezed your eyes shut, regretting not driving yourself.

The ride was bumpy and rough, as Zach definitely didn't know how to drive very well. His movements were sharp and jarring, and he was starting to give you motion sickness when the Jeep entered a clearing.

Ahead of you was a large, metal gate, with two guards posted.

Gray pumped his fist in the air as Zach cheered, you sighed in relief. It was almost over, all you had to do was cross that gate. Owen would be somewhere on the other side, waiting for you. You could feel your heart fluttering at the warm idea of safety again.

Then you caught a faint noise.

You lifted your head to see dozens of pteranodons gliding over the canopy.

"Go, go, go!" You screamed, Zach stomped on the gas pedal. The lurch of the vehicle pressed you harshly into the seat, but you didn't let it stop you from frantically waving your hands and screaming at the guards.

Gray joined your efforts, Zach even started honking, but it wasn't until the guards' eyes were drawn toward the horde of airborne predators that they scrambled to the control panel. The gate began to open.

You glanced back over your shoulder, wondering how to hell these animals escaped the aviary. But your attention turned to the park as the crowds slowly became aware of the situation.

You and the boys ditched the Jeep in the central park area, trying to make it through the sea of people. Gray's hand clutched yours tight enough to hurt, but you refused to let go. Zach was only a pace behind you, his hand on your shoulder to keep you steady and together as people shoved through, screaming and panicking. Most of them were smart enough to enter the buildings to try to avoid the onslaught of pteranodons, but that wasn't an option for you as you fought to find Owen.

You flinched, covering Gray's eyes as a man nearby was carried off by a pteranodon. Dimorphodons hunted the vacationers in ravenous packs, their sharp teeth easily tearing flesh. A lone one latched onto your arm, and you instinctively pulled away from the boys to flail and try to pry it off. The pain was unimaginable as it ripped through your arm, but a baseball bat swung, knocking it off of you.

The strike was hard enough to kill it, and you spun to find Liam before you. He rushed to your side, peeling your arm from your chest to see the damage.

"Oh, Y/n," he murmured, "I've been so fucking worried. Where have you been? Why haven't you been answering my calls? Are you okay?"

"There's too much to explain, I'm just glad you're okay," you sighed, tears dripping down your chin. Liam sighed, setting down his baseball bat to rip his shirt and wrap it tightly around your bleeding arm.

"We'll have to get you to a proper doctor as soon as possible," he said, then he pulled you in for a hug. He tucked your head underneath his chin, holding you tightly. "Y/n, I've been so worried..." he repeated again.

"Y/n!" Zach's voice made you turn around, but a scream made you whip back around.

In horror, you saw Liam being carried by a pteranodon.

You grabbed his baseball bat and jumped, managing to hit its wing. It dropped him, but he landed wrong. You could hear the crunch of bone.

You rushed to his side, seeing the blood seeking from his shoulder and the bone protruding from his leg. You were panicking, hysteria threatening to take control of you as he groaned and writhed on the ground.

"Don't worry about me," he grimaced, reaching up to grab your hand. "Take the bat, and keep yourself safe. I'll... I'll see you later, okay? I..."

"Oh, my god, Liam?!" a shrill screech sounded as Rift suddenly appeared. "What happened?"

"Rift, thank god," you grabbed her hand in relief. "Take care of him, okay? Make sure he gets medical attention. I need to find my brother. We can meet up later, okay?"

"O-okay," Rift nodded, choking back a sob. She began applying emergency care to Liam in an attempt to stabilize him. "Be safe--and don't you dare fucking die."

"I won't, and you too," you gave them a weak smile.

"Wait, Y/n," Liam grabbed your ankle, "I... I love you, okay? Be--be safe, please. I want to see you again."

The waterworks were strong as your vision blurred with tears once more, uncertain of what to say. You knelt down, placing his fallen baseball cap back onto his head. He gave you a faint smile, but even in pain, it was a supermodel expression. "I'll see you again, don't worry. I'll see the both of you again."

Then, with one last look to them, you took the baseball bat and darted back toward Zach and Gray.

Zach was covering Gray protectively, swatting at the dimorphodons that threatened them. You, using your good arm, swung at them, cracking skulls and breaking bones with the force.

As the three of you began moving, you saw an incoming pteranodon. You shoved the boys to the ground, smashing the baseball bat into the animal's head, hard enough to break the bat in two. As it crashed, you used the splintered bat and embedded it into its eyes. It screamed before succumbing to its demise.

You released an animalistic growl, this doing some good for your pent-up emotions.

"You're badass as fuck," Zach gaped, staring at you.

"I agree," Gray nodded, reaching for your hand.

"You can drool over me later, right now we need to find shelter," you spotted the hotel, and began guiding them towards it. It was then, however, that Zara came into view. Admittedly, you'd forgotten she even existed.

You gestured toward the hotel, and she nodded. But before either of you could start moving again, a pteranodon snatched her shoulder, making her scream. It took off, lifting her with ease.

You gasped, instinctively covering Gray's eyes as you watched her get tossed between pteranodons like a toy. You winced at each scream she made, then she was dropped into the lagoon. You raced to the fence in the hopes she'd be able to swim to the side, but another pteranodon pulled her from the waters.

Then, the mosasaur broke through the water, clamping its jaws on the pteranodon that was carrying Zara, and sank back into the depths.

Gray sank into your arms, "So--so much death..."

You could feel his hot tears seeping through your shirt as you peeled him off, ushering him away from the lagoon. You swallowed your own lump in your throat, nodding for Zach to follow you.

A gunshot made you flinch, shoving the boys behind yourself. Your eyes landed on a familiar face, and you cried out, "Owen!"

But he was occupied by a dimorphodon trying to snap at his face. He had his hands on the animal's throat, but the animal was strong enough to give him a run for his money. You lurched forward, but a familiar redhead beat you to it.

Claire had retrieved Owen's gun, and shot it pointblank in the face. The sound made your ears ring, but before you could properly react, Claire pulled Owen into a deep kiss. You managed a grin at the sight.

"Is that Aunt Claire?" Zach asked, relief coating his voice as he ushered you and Gray toward them, breaking their moment but filling them with relief at the sight of you three, safe.

Zach and Gray wrapped Claire into a hug, and you jumped straight into Owen's arms, which he spun you around and around until you were dizzy.

"Thank god, you're okay," Owen mumbled into your hair, squeezing you so hard you thought you'd burst. You had to cut it short, however, since it was making your arm hurt even more.

He grabbed your arm, twisting it to check out the makeshift bandage, and the blood soaking through it.

"What is this?" he demanded.

"I got bit," you nodded toward the dead dimorphodon.

"You really want me to go gray, don't you?" he growled, "Not answering your phone, vanishing for hours, and now this? You're going to be grounded for forever, I swear. You'll never be leaving my sight again."

"I'm so glad you're safe," Claire pulled you in for a hug when Owen released you. You could feel her hot tears burning into your shoulder.

"We should get going now," Owen nodded toward a pathway with tourists tunneling through it.

You followed the adults as they hurried you and the boys toward the pathway. Owen had brought his gun, which he used to shoot any flyers that swooped down, seeking an easy meal. Each time the gun went off, your ears began to ring and you covered them. You hated the sound and the feeling. Zach's hand found your shoulder.

Another path branched off, leading to a vehicle. Owen met your eyes before sprinting toward it and jumping into the driver's seat. "Come on, get in!"

You jumped in, followed by the boys, and Claire took the passenger seat as Owen peeled off. You held your arm, the pain still strong and throbbing. Your head had also begun to hurt.

"Never leave us," Gray said with wide eyes.

"I'm never letting you out of my sight again," agreed Claire, nodding, You could see her hands trembling on the dash.

But the boys shook their heads in unison, "No, no, we meant him!" and they pointed to Owen. You could see the disheartenment on her face.

"Don't worry, Claire. I'm glad you're here."

She smiled at you through the mirror, but your gaze was already out the window. Your mind went back to Rift and Liam; were they okay? Did they get eaten? What were they doing? Did Liam get help?
