Chapter 5
Shubman stood in front of the mirror, still undecided about what to wear. He had pulled out several outfits but nothing seemed right for the dinner at Virat's. Just then Shahneel walked in, holding an outfit in her hands.
"Wear this," she said confidently.
Shubman turned around, surprised. "When did you get here? And how did you get in?"
Shahneel rolled her eyes. "I came just now, and don't forget, I have your house keys, dumbo."
With a resigned smile, Shubman took the outfit from her and went to his closet to change. He emerged wearing a ribbed, short-sleeved brown polo shirt with a collar that gave him a comfortable yet polished look. The shirt featured a few buttons at the top, allowing him to adjust the neckline to his preference. He paired it with light beige trousers that offered a modern fit, balancing trendiness with classic style. A silver watch with a white face on his left wrist added a touch of elegance to the ensemble.
"Perfect," Shahneel said, giving him a once-over. "Now go knock 'em dead."
Feeling more confident, Shubman thanked her and headed out. He drove towards Virat's house, his mind wandering to thoughts of seeing Sara again. As he arrived and stepped out of his car, his eyes immediately found her in the crowd.
Sara was wearing a knee-length brown dress adorned with charming polka dots. The dress featured short sleeves and a flared skirt, offering a playful yet elegant look. The cinched waistline accentuated her figure, adding a flattering definition to her silhouette. A subtle, decorative perforated pattern around the waist and the bottom hem enhanced the dress's overall aesthetic. She completed the look with strappy flat sandals that complemented the outfit's color scheme. Her hair was styled in pretty waves, framing her face beautifully.
Shubman couldn't help but smile as he walked over to her. "You look stunning," he said, his eyes shining with admiration.
Sara blushed slightly, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Thank you, Shubman. You clean up pretty well yourself."
They shared a moment, their eyes locking as the bustling noise of the party seemed to fade into the background.
"Shall we?" Shubman offered his arm, and Sara took it, feeling a flutter of excitement as they walked into the house together.
As Shubman and Sara entered Virat's house, they were immediately greeted by a group of Shubman's friends who were already there. Ishan Kishan, with his ever-present grin, spotted them first and made a beeline over.
"Look who decided to show up together!" Ishan teased, nudging Shubman playfully in the ribs. "Shubman, you look like you've just stepped out of a fashion magazine. And Sara, you're glowing!"
Abhishek, who was chatting with Hardik and Yuzi, turned to them with a mischievous grin. "I was just telling Hardik here that Shubman's dress code has suddenly gone from 'cricket kit' to 'runway chic'."
Hardik laughed, slinging an arm around Shubman's shoulder. "Yeah, what's with the fancy look, mate? Planning to make a grand entrance or just impress Sara here?"
Yuzi, always the joker, chimed in with a playful smirk. "You guys look good together. Shubman, I think you need a new nickname – maybe 'The Gentleman Cricketer'?"
Sara laughed, enjoying the banter. "You guys are impossible," she said, shaking her head. "But thank you, it's nice to feel appreciated."
Ishan, ever the instigator, nudged Shubman again. "Come on, Shubie, don't be shy. Let's show everyone how you clean up! And Sara, you should join us for a game later. We might just need a referee with all this testosterone in the room."
Shubman chuckled, feeling a mix of embarrassment and amusement. "Alright, alright, you guys win. Let's just enjoy the evening."
As they mingled, the group settled into a comfortable rhythm of laughter and light-hearted teasing. Virat, approached them with a broad smile. "Glad you could make it, Shubman. And Sara, you look fantastic. We're all really happy to see you two here."
Sara smiled, feeling the warmth of the group's welcome. "Thanks, Virat bhai. It's great to be here."
The evening continued with more jokes, friendly banter, and a few impromptu games. The atmosphere was relaxed, and Shubman found himself enjoying the camaraderie and the chance to unwind. Even the teasing from his friends seemed more like a celebration of their friendship than anything else.
As the night wore on, Shubman and Sara found a quiet corner, their conversation flowing easily, the background noise of the party fading into the distance. They shared stories, laughed, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of each other's company, knowing that, despite everything, they had found something special in each other.
As the night deepened, the party at Virat's house showed no signs of slowing down. The lively music, the sound of laughter, and the clinking of glasses filled the air. Shubman and Sara continued their conversation in a quiet corner of the patio, finding solace in each other's company amidst the bustling gathering.
"You know," Shubman said, his eyes reflecting the string lights hanging overhead, "I never expected my life to take such a turn. From being falsely accused to meeting someone who believes in me... it's been a whirlwind."
Sara smiled warmly, her eyes meeting his. "I'm just glad I could help you, Shubman. You've shown so much strength through all of this. And now, you're free to focus on what you love most."
Before Shubman could respond, they were interrupted by Hardik, who had spotted them from across the yard. With a broad grin, he sauntered over, holding two orange juices.
"Hey lovebirds, what's this? A private party within the party?" Hardik teased, handing them the drinks.
Sara laughed, accepting the juice. "Hardik, you always know how to crash a moment, don't you?"
Hardik winked. "It's a gift. Besides, Shubm my boy. Gotta make sure he's behaving."
Not far behind, Ishan and Abhishek joined them, clearly eager to continue the fun. Ishan clapped Shubman on the back. "So, Shubie, when's the next big match? Now that you're back on track, we're expecting some serious fireworks."
Shubman chuckled, shaking his head. "One step at a time, guys. Let me enjoy this night first."
Abhishek nodded, a playful glint in his eyes. "Fair enough. But don't think we're letting you off easy. We've got high expectations."
Yuzi, who had been entertaining a small group nearby with his antics, couldn't resist joining in. "Sara, you've worked miracles. Our Shub here is a free man thanks to you. Any chance you're looking for more cricket clients?"
Sara grinned, glancing at Shubman. "I think I'll stick to one for now. He's more than enough to handle."
The group laughed, and the conversation continued to flow effortlessly. Shubman found himself relaxing, genuinely enjoying the company of his friends and the warmth of the evening. Sara's presence by his side made everything feel right.
As the night began to wind down, Virat approached with a sincere smile. "Guys, this has been a great night. Shubman, we're all so proud of you. And Sara, thank you for everything you've done."
Sara nodded, feeling a sense of fulfillment. "It's been my pleasure, bhai."
The group raised their glasses in a final toast, celebrating friendship, resilience, and new beginnings. The camaraderie and support were palpable, a testament to the bonds they had forged both on and off the field.
Later, as Shubman and Sara walked to their cars, the night air cool and refreshing, Shubman turned to her, his expression earnest. "Sara, I can't thank you enough for everything. Tonight was amazing, and it's all because of you."
Sara smiled, her eyes softening. "You don't have to thank me, Shubman. Just promise me you'll keep being the incredible person you are."
He nodded, feeling a warmth in his chest. "I promise. And maybe... we can do this again sometime? Just the two of us?"
Sara's smile widened. "I'd like that."
With that, they parted ways, both feeling a sense of hope and anticipation for what the future held. The night had been a celebration of triumph over adversity, and for Shubman and Sara, it marked the beginning of something truly special.
