Chapter 29

Isobel's POV
It's been a few hours I think since my consciousness has started to return. I notice that my body has shifted back to my human form, although how, I do not know.

I shifted us back as the cuffs are too tight for legs when in wolf form.

Good thinking.

Our body struggles to fully comprehend consciousness and I am forced to wait for my body to come round but my mind quickly sinks back into darkness.

Iz wake up! You need to get up. Now!

I can't.

I am vaguely aware of my body being shifted, thrown on the floor and sparks shoot through my body. Isaac. He must have escaped for us to be together. I can feel him pull me closer to his body. I attempt to move, to tell him that I'm awake but my limbs will not obey my commands, staying stubbornly limp.

My ears begin to work again, and I can hear Matthew threatening Isaac. The traitorous son of a bitch. I wish Isaac had escaped; it would have been better that way. He suddenly howls in pain and the sparks are gone, replaced by a burning sensation on the front of my neck that quickly becomes painful, causing me to stir; the panic in Isaac's voice is audible as he begs him for mercy and the knife disappears from my neck.

My body is dragged along the floor and there is a sound of padlocks and cell doors being opened but I still cannot open my eyes. There is a burning sensation on my wrists and ankles. Silver cuffs. Nothing else could cause this.

"Right, time to get up."

What?

Mathew harshly jabs a needle into my left arm, and I wince from the unnecessary force. I quickly regain consciousness, my eyes fluttering but Jack forces them to remain closed, taking control of our body.

"I know you're awake. You can't lie to me."

We continue with our façade, pretending we are unconscious.

"I know you can hear me. But if you won't respond, there's only one way to make you. I'll just go fetch Isaac. "

No! I'm not letting Isaac get hurt for my sake. I instantly snap upright and tell for him to wait.

"I'm awake! Leave him alone."

He ignores me and goes out the cell. There is the sounds of a furious snarl next door and a sharp cry of pain from Isaac and I can't help pulling at my chains. I know they're cutting through my flesh, burning my skin, but I don't care, only able to focus on the agony coming from Isaac through the mate bond.

Isaac!

He does not, cannot, respond to my mental shout. The effects of the wolf suppressant must still be active. Matthew returns, dragging a barely conscious Isaac behind him, his eyes unfocused.

Jack grabs control and launches herself at him, the chains pulling us back just inches from the hand holding Isaac up. She snarls at him, starting to shift, not caring that the cuffs are digging into our limbs, only that we can reach him if we are in our wolf form.

"Shift back."

Our answer is a low growl. He pulls out his crossbow and aims it at Isaac, firing and sending the quarrel through his leg. Isaac snarls, his face contorted in agony, one clawed hand carving bloody furrows into Matthew's arm and I feel a spasm of pain leaking through the bond that accompanies the already throbbing ache from Isaac's arm.

"Now, or he gets the other leg."

Reluctantly, I shift back, still growling despite being in my human form.

"Thank you," he says sarcastically. "Now listen; you are going to plead guilty at your trial tomorrow. You are not going to fight the guards. I'll be watching you carefully; if I see the slightest aggression, I will kill your mate without hesitation. Are you going to comply?"

I stay silent for a second, considering our options. He cocks an eyebrow and aims the crossbow at Isaac's head.

"I'll do it! I'll do it! Just don't hurt him."

"Pleasure doing business with you Isobel. I'm afraid we must depart."

Without another word, he tugs Isaac out of the room and I hear Matthew lock the cell doors and his footsteps leave.

Only once I'm sure he's gone, do I attempt to speak to Isaac.

"Isaac?"

"Iz? Are you okay?"

"Other than a few cuts, yes. What happened to you though?"

I hear him wince.

"He broke one of my arms, shot a crossbow bolt into my leg and nearly knocked me out. But otherwise, I'm as a fit as a fiddle."

His failed attempt at humour draws a weak laugh out of me but the lack of pain in his voice indicates Nate is blocking most of it. My chains are easily long enough to allow me to sit next to the wall separating me and Isaac, a huge relief.

"Iz? You there still?"

"Yes."

"Do you know where we are?"

I pause to study my cell for any hints: there's a window, no doubt made of reinforced glass, and nothing else. I peer out of the window to see a large courtroom, empty thankfully. I recognise the insignia on the judge podium: a simple full moon.

"We're in my old pack. Explains why Matthew has not been caught. If it was our pack, someone would have noticed if he was dragging two bodies, especially the Alpha's and Luna's. The Moonblood Pack wouldn't care: the way they would view it is he caught a murderer and an enemy Alpha. It works out pretty well for them."

I hear him move and utter a string of swear words as the pain no doubt hits him again.

"You okay?"

"Yep. Just can't use half of my limbs."

"You haven't healed?"

"No. Wolf suppressant, while still allowing us to heal minor wounds, it won't let us do broken bones and foreign objects. Or silver. The most Nate can do is block the pain."

"I'm sorry."

"Iz, don't blame yourself. It's not your fault. We'll get out of here. You're going to fine."

"I know but how?"

"Have you tried punching the glass?"

I do as he suggested and try to break or at least the crack the glass. All I hear is a crack as I break my hand, while the window remains intact.

"Nope. Not doing that again. I just broke my hand." The absolute agony fades as Jack quickly heals me.

"Agreed. Did it do any damage to the window?"

"No. Not even a crack. Why can't you do something?"

"The wolf suppressant renders me as good as useless; you'd easily be able to beat me in a contest of strength right now."

"Oh. I'm sorry Isaac."

"Don't be. None of this is your fault."

I pause to collect my thoughts.

"How long does it take for the suppressant to wear off?"

"About a day for me because I'm an Alpha so slightly less time than for you."

"So it might wear off before Matthew next sees us and we can escape?"

"Maybe but it's unlikely. And Iz?"

"Yes?"

"Is there anything you can do to cover up? I don't like him seeing you naked."

"No, there's nothing in my cell. Is there anything you can do about yourself?"

"No."

I growl in frustration.

"So there's nothing we can do?"

"No."

Without thinking, I punch the wall between us in fury, busting my hand in the process but I don't care, continually punching it until there's a large hole but still I keep pummelling it, not caring about the pain jolting up my arm.

I punch the wall again only for my hand to go straight through. I withdraw my hand and is replaced by Isaac's concerned face.

"Iz, let me see your hand."

"It's fine."

"Show me Iz."

I give in and hold it up to the hole.

"This is why you don't punch walls Iz. You cause too much damage to yourself."

He's right. I look at my hand to see it's covered in blood, in some parts I can even see bone poking up, not to mention my arm bones feel like they've been completely shattered. Bracing myself, I push the bones in my hand back into place, letting out a noiseless scream as they are repositioned. Jack quickly gets to work healing my hand and soon I feel much better.

"Better now Iz?"

"Yeah. I didn't realise it was that bad. At least I can talk to you better now."

"True." He gives me a sad smile through the hole in the wall. "Listen we're going to get out of here one way or another, so don't worry too much. Let's just get through tonight."

"Okay," I say blowing him a kiss.

"Goodnight Iz."

"I love you."

"And I, you."

We shift away from our respective walls and I lie on the floor, trying to avoid putting weight on the cuffs to prevent the silver burning me while I sleep.

Night Jack.

We're getting out of here tomorrow.

Agreed.
