CHAPTER 20 OFFICE OFFICE
The Murphy Motor Asia head's swanky cabin had two childhood best friends sitting across the table. One was trying to be goofy while the other had decided to be as professional as it could get. After all, this big a thing was kept under wraps and she had no idea that her childhood best friend whom she was in love with before things turned south, was already a part of the same organization since a year.
How was Janhavi supposed to feel and react? Already their bond was at stake and almost had dissolved with the seven year gap hammering the crack bigger. The CEO had left them both in the cabin to discuss further, unknown of the fact that Agastya and Janhavi already knew each other. For him they were colleagues and probably after all these shocks and the hurt getting deep, Janhavi too had thought to keep it likewise.
The silence had gotten uncomfortable for Janhavi while Agastya was busy in enjoying the view making her more awkward with his stare. Janhavi finally took a glance at him and found him smirking mischievously. That irritated her even more as she mumbled to herself taking her gaze away.
"Ek to itni badi baat chupai and now he is shamelessly gawking. Fucking moron! Dekhe hi jaa raha hai. And that smirk. Ugh! I wish I could punch him on his face right now" Janhavi rolled her eyes while mumbling
"Hmm? Did you say anything sweetest heart? Thoda zor se bolo naa. Was a lil busy couldn't hear properly" Agastya asked with the smirk that irritated her further.
"Nothing" she answered without looking at him.
Agastya sighed as he locked his hands leaning on his black leather chair "So?"
Janhavi looked at him sternly "What?"
And he asked her finally "Are you not happy sweetest heart that I am here? And we shall be working together?"
That sweetest heart irritated her now as well as she secretly loved to be called "Should I be happy?". She asked point blank as Agastya shrugged looking at her. Before he could say anything further Janhavi's mobile rung. It was one of her colleagues, the assistant general manager Kabir.
"Hello, hi. Yes Kabir? Umm, I am in a meeting with our new Asia Head, Mr. Agastya. Kya hua anything urgent?" Janhavi asked over the phone and Kabir said something that made her laugh. What exactly did he say, Agastya didn't know, but it looked like they have a great rapo. Where his heart was smiling looking at Janhavi's laugh, he hated the fact that it was not him and some other man who could make her laugh this much.
With that thought only he had picked up a strong disliking towards Kabir. His gaze became intense at her as he could hear her side of the conversation
"Kabiirrrrrr! Stop it, my stomach hurts. Kitna hasaoge. Let me get done with this meeting, then we shall discuss that project. See yaa. Bye"
Agastya mumbled "Ohh! You want to get done with Agastya? Let me see how is that even possible? And Kabir, you!"
She had disconnected the call and her lips still had that curve "You are not going to get done with the discussions today. Please inform your Kabir, whoever he is. I would want to sit and discuss the projects Murphy had been working on till now"
He said a bit sternly and this time Janhavi knew Agastya was irritated. She remembered her childhood, where in school Agastya had gotten miffed with guys, had punched even once and strongly disliked a boy named Prince as they all had tried getting friendly with Janhavi, his jaanu. But today, she too was miffed with him. And the way he said little sternly hurt her. Her face had become pale listening to his stern voice. She hadn't been reacting to his teasing and keeping her approach professional, she answered him
"Sure sir, I shall get the details and let me email you the data"
Agastya had instantly calmed down and knew he had been little rude. He knew she was deliberately trying to keep it professional but then he was Agastya, her goofy gusty bikki. How could he let his jaanu maanu sulk and feel hurt?
"We all work on first name basis. Please call me Agastya or may be Gusty. You know my childhood bestest friend used to call me that. You kinda remind me of her"
Janhavi had a slight smile and before she could smile wholeheartedly she coughed to stop herself from smiling. Taking a pause she replied without looking at him
"Agastya is fine" and he sulked a bit. How he was craving to listen Gusty from her! But he knew it was going to be tough.
Janhavi had gone back to her cabin and Agastya took few minutes to recap the time and her expressions since morning. But then he had to get back to work. To hold meetings he would need thorough information and understanding of the current projects. However the name Kabir and Janhavi's laugh on his call kept ringing in his mind. Just then looking at the watch his mind churned a naughty idea.
He made a call to his assistant "Ayesha, can you please connect me to Janhavi? Will take time to mug up the extensions. Thanks"
He smirked "Agastya Sehgal, you are wicked. Kya kare lekin. You gotta do somethings that you gotta do"
His PA dialed to Janhavi "Good morning Janhavi, Agastya wants to talk to you. Please be on line a sec"
Ayesha connected his extention to Janhavi's while she knew he was doing it deliberately. He could have called her on her mobile too but he didn't. Agastya spoke "Hi, Jaanu can you please come in my cabin? And yeah please get the project deets. Can you email me too?". He smirked while Janhavi could just revert "Sure".
He twirled his leather chair, smiling at himself. He knew what next to do to see Jaanu's reaction. He wanted to gauge once she was in his cabin. As expected Janhavi knocked his cabin door and waited for him to allow the entry courtesy sake. As she entered he grinned widely,
"Ohh come on! You have the permission to barge in without waiting for my answer. You know right?"
She took a seat and was about to say when he dialed Ayesha, deliberately infront of her, to irritate her
"Hey Ayesha! Thanks darling. Can you please get two coffees sent? Aww, how sweet. Yeah I shall get sometime to get used to the extensions. Well I have you. Umm! To help me. Isn't it?"
Agastya deliberately smiled talking sweetly with his PA. Janhavi was annoyed and got up to leave the cabin. That was when Agastya held her hand stopping her disconnecting the call. He knew she was already hurt and his sweet talks with the PA had annoyed her even further. He knew all of that but he was doing it all for her attention that he wasn't getting. He wanted her to question him, be angry and say it to him. But what right did she have to ask just a friend? The seven years distance had deepened the rift in their relationship and had deepened the emotions too at the same time.
As he held her hand, her eyes widened and her heart thumped aloud brimming her eyes with tears that she wiped swiftly. Agastya hadn't left his hold on her hand and pulled her a little softly. She turned back to look at him. She had a stern look that clearly stated her hurt and disappointment that Agastya could read. They were no more kids and even while they were kids Agastya always knew just with her expressions when she would be hurt. He would immediately hug her and kiss on her cheeks. They both probably remembered the same thing as Agastya would always giggle and say
"Ohhh hooo! Jaanu maanu, tu to angry and hurt ho gayi. Main to fun kar raha tha" and he would always give in her demand and immediately apologize hugging and kissing her cheeks mending her sullen mood. But today, he couldn't do that just abruptly as they were no more kids and the distance had changed that equation.
But Agastya knew how to make up her mood. He gestured with his eyes towards the chair asking her to sit as he even said politely
"Baith jao please" he had still held her hand loosely but she averted her gaze and didn't obey him. He next said sternly "Janhavi! Sit". His voice had authority and she had to listen to what he had said. Janhavi spoke in an almost inaudible voice
"I've emailed you the details" that's when he shushed her "Shhh! Did you have your lunch?"
"I am not hungry" she said without looking at him and looked at him expressionless. He dialed a number from his phone opening his box that Naina had given him. He deliberately kept his phone on speaker as his hands were soiled with butter
"Hi, Haan beta bol" Naina said
"Mumma, why did you give me tiffin? Am I a small baby? Aur main school nahi office aaya hoon" Agastya said trying to find his tissue to wipe his hands clean.
"Are to kya hua? Main to kahti hoon, share it with some beautiful girl. What's the harm in carrying home cooked food? Koi to hogi share karne. Chal mujhe kaam hai. Kha lena share kar ke" Naina said without saying anything further
Agastya huffed "Ye mumma bhi naa. Ab office me kaha dhundhu beautiful girl jisko aloo paratha pasand ho" he looked at Janhavi secretly who was looking at him. He again thought to play along
"Ohh, yaa You can share with me Janhavi. Do you like aloo paratha? My mumma makes the best ones. Wanna try some? Dekho mumma ne kaha share with some beautiful girl and umm! I don't know anyone. Well, you are beautiful too. Ohh yeah! Why didn't I notice this. Ahhh! Stupid gusty. Sahi kahti thi wo, gusty wastey you are stupidddddd"
He mimicked Janhavi's childhood dialogue and she almost chuckled. But later remembered she was hurt. Her eyes narrowed at him as he again spoke
"You know, meri childhood best friend thi ek, usko bhook lagti thi naa to usko samajh nahi aata tha. She would sulk and be so cranky and cry even at the smallest of things. Then main usko apne hath se cookies aur aloo paratha khilata tha school ki break me. She loved that attention and I loved feeding her"
He forwarded a bite of the aloo paratha towards her remembering their childhood snippet. The corner of her eyes had tears while his eyes shed with smile as he made her eat that morsel. His smile brightened as Janhavi asked him softly
"Now where is your that best friend?"
Agastya smiled looking at her as he again said something to piss her "Meri aankho me aur yaha!" He said pointing towards his heart
"I see her in every woman now, aisa lagta hai sab me wohi hai. See, even in you I am seeing her. It happens, right?"
She got hurt listening in her too he was finding his best friend. She had forgotten that it was same and what he hinted that. She was done just in few morsels as she got up wiping her mouth
"Sabme wohi dikhti hai. Thanks. Say thanks to your mum"
As she turned to go Agastya patted his forehead as he mumbled "Kaisi gadhi hai, ek hi baat hai aur ek hi hai. Lekin hurt ho gayi. You're doomed"
She was about to open the door when he called her from behind
"Miss Janhavi! If you find my best friend anywhere, please tell her, her Gusty misses her so dearly. But hey, be cautious, she is just like Jannet"
Janhavi turned listening to "Jannet" looking at him.
