Chapter 30

"Daddy," Alicia yelled before running over to the man with the same light brown complexion, and wrapped her arms around him.

The man seemed genuinely happy as he smiled down at his demon spawn and wrapped an arm lovingly around her. The other two men approached until they stood on either side of the man calling me his daughter. All of them held looks that said they wanted to come closer but were restraining themselves from doing so.

The silence that took hold of all of us was overwhelming. Were we supposed to attack or run at this point?

"I hope you don't do either," the man with the black hair answered.

The fact that he was reading my thought made me grit my teeth in frustration. I was fine with Sage doing that, but this dude had no right. Screw blood, this wasn't my father and I didn't care what he had to say.

The man took another step forward as he started to speak again, "Girls, I hope you both can one day call me your father. I know that's all any of us really want, to just have our children in our lives."

The other men nodded along, agreeing with his words.

"Bullshit," Lucas stated, his eyes sizing up the red-haired man that stood off to the side of the man that called himself my father.

The blonde haired man looked towards the man with Lucas' fiery locks and smiled, "Looks like your son and my daughter have something going on. Guess that makes a family."

"Only as long as you pay for the wedding," the red-haired man replied before releasing a deep belly laugh.

Lolly spat at the blonde before ducking back under Lucas' arm. But the act of disrespect only made both the blonde and the redhead laugh harder.

"Gentlemen, enough," the raven-haired man barked.

It looked like all of us were starting to make connections with the men in front of us. Alicia had found her father, as well as Lucas, Lolly, Sage, and me. But it became clear that not everyone had made it to the party, Wes and Declan's fathers weren't here.

"What do you want from us?" Sage asked, her voice sounding strained like she was trying to hold a tight grip on her emotions.

"We have plenty of time for that. How about we try an introduction first? It's obvious neither of you will be calling me Dad anytime soon, so you can call me by my name, Azazel," the raven-haired man said.

He then proceeded to point out the others starting with Lucas' father, "this is Shax."

The redheaded demon waved to all of us while shooting Lucas a toothy grin.

"My fair-haired friend here is Barbas," Azazel stated pointing to Lolly's father, who simply nodded.

"and in the back there is Zozo," he finally finished as he hooked his thumb over his shoulder to indicate Alicia's father behind them.

"Well now that's out of the way, what the hell do you want?" Wes asked, staring Azazel down.

Ms. Pierce and Mr. B slowly made their way to stand in front of us, as if they were trying to shield us from the demons in front of them.

"It doesn't matter what they want, kids, cause it's not happening," Ms. Pierce announced as she glanced back at all of us.

"Now, now, Madison, no need to get all judgy. We don't want anything from them except a chance to get to know them. They are our children after all." Azazel informed her, but even as he said it, a flash of some unknown emotion lighted his eyes.

I couldn't help myself, I had questions and I wasn't going to wait all day to get them.

"If that was true then how come Wes and Declan's fathers aren't here?" I asked, stepping around Ms. Pierce only to have her grab me by the shoulders and gently pull me back.

Wes looked at me like he was in shock while Declan's shoulders drooped and his gaze slid down to the floor.

Azazel's eerie smile dropped for a second before he corrected it and answered, "Those two got stuck on the other side because someone's baby mama couldn't finish the incantation." He turned to look back at Alicia and Zozo, both of whom seemed wrapped up in their own little father-daughter reunion.

After glaring at the two of them for a moment, Azazel turned back to us. "The portal cover is severely damaged but it's not enough for everyone to get out. Sure some can slither through like we did, but for others that will take some time. So it's best if we just go ahead and open it the rest of the way," he informed us as if this was a simple technical issue that he could quickly correct.

But we couldn't let him do it. If they unleashed everything on the other side of the portal our world would fall apart. One way or another we needed to stop them.

Sage glanced over at me and slowly nodded her head to let me know she knew what I was thinking and she agreed. I appreciated her support but that didn't help me any in coming up with a plan.

Azazel started to approach the still unconscious woman laying on the ground, the book of Vernon still clutched in her hands. This was it, he was going to unlock the portal. Think, Chloe, think.

He bent down to reach for the book and I did the only thing I could, my hand twitched to the side and the book flew to the other side of the platform. So it wasn't my best idea but I was hoping it would buy us some time.

Azazel looked at our group and gave us an amused smile before trekking towards the book. Once he was close my hand twitched again and the book started to fly, but this time Azazel held his hand out and the book froze in mid-air.

"Aren't you a little old for childish games, Chloe?" he asked tauntingly.

Before I could answer, Lolly teleported from under Lucas' arm to where the book hovered above the ground. She grabbed it and zapped herself and the book back to us before saying, "childish games is my middle name."

It was such a Lolly thing to say, and if we weren't in the situation we were in, I would've laughed. But the look Azazel was shooting our way erased all humor from my mind. If I thought he looked scary while trying to be peaceful and smiling, that was nothing compared to now. Fire danced in his eyes, his body stood rigidly, and that toothy grin was now replaced with a menacing scowl.

Azazel turned to the blonde demon and shouted, "Barbas, do something about your little ankle-biter!"

Barbas levitated into the air, almost reaching the roof of the cave before he dove down towards Lolly. Before he could get close, Lucas shot off a string of fireballs that slammed into the demons face, one right after the other. He didn't seem hurt but the attack did cause him to rear off and miss his target. Landing next to Azazel, the demon looked just as pissed as the first.

The redheaded demon, Shax, attempted a retrieval of his own by charging towards us. Declan, Wes, and Mr. B stepped in front of the group and met the attack head on. The three of them were strong and able to stop Shax's stampede, but the demon was still trying to push past them. The progress he made was only a few feet before Declan multiplied, giving them three more bodies to help. The six of them not only stopped the demon's movement, but lifted him into the air only to throw him towards his buddies. He quickly got to his feet, his face turning as red as his hair.

The commotion drew the attention of Alicia and her father, who each walked over to stand with the other three demons.

"Need help, fellas?" Alicia's father, Zozo, asked with a cocky smirk.

His hands slammed together and his whole body began to shake. The shaking spread causing the platform to move as well, and we each grabbed onto each other to keep from falling. Soon the man's body began to grow and shift. His tan skin turned a deep muddy brown as he nearly tripled in size. Even his arm and leg muscles grew until his appendages were as thick as a tree, and two long horns sprouted from his forehead. The horns grew several feet before twirling in on themselves giving him the look of a goat.

This was much worse than the demon Ms. Pierce showed us in the basement at Landry's. This behemoth monster looked down at us like we were ants, and gave a small chuckle that shook the walls around us. We weren't prepared for this.

"Good thinking, Zozo," Azazel commented before slamming his fists together in the same manner as the giant before.

His body grew just as Zozo's did, only his skin turned pitch black, and the horns that grew from his head jutted straight back like sharp spears. The idea of one humungous demon was bad enough, but with two, we were totally screwed.

The monster that was previously my somewhat human-looking father, pointed a finger towards us as he said, "Give us the book, and we won't have to hurt any of you. We would hate to kill our children after finally getting to meet them."

My throat felt tight, breathing ragged. We needed to get the book out of here, even if that meant risking our lives.

"Lolly, go!" I shouted to her, hoping the sudden decision would be enough to at least get her and the book out of there.

But it was too late.

The Zozo demon threw a large rock at Lolly. Luckily, the demon was a poor shot. The rock hit the ground several feet in front of us and began to skid across the platform towards us. The others and I darted out of the way, some falling off the side of the platform. When I looked around to check on everyone, I spotted Lolly among a pile of rocks and boulders, off to the side. She was moving but stuck.

"It's my leg, I can't get out. You guys gotta go!" she shouted.

Sage jumped to her feet, "like hell we do."

Mr. B was the first to reach Lolly's side, followed by Lucas. The two of them tried to prey her leg out but it was no use.

"Where's the book?" Ms. Pierce yelled, causing the rest to start searching frantically.

I knew the book was important but so was Lolly. Besides Sage, Lolly was my best friend, and I wasn't going to just leave her there. So I ran over to her and tried to move the rocks with everything I had. The power surge I felt when I lifted the woman in the air earlier wasn't there. I dug and strained, trying to find it and lift the rocks off of Lolly's leg. No matter what, I wasn't going to give up, not on Lolly.

Lucas however, was getting more and more frustrated with the situation. He turned to the giant demons and began shooting fireballs and flamethrower effects at them. The action only enraged them more. Growls and howls echoed through the cave as they stormed towards us.

"Keep them busy until I can get her free," I instructed.

Lucas, Wes, Declan, and Mr. B ran towards the demons in an attempt to fight. I wasn't sure what their odds would be so I need to hurry while Sage and Ms. Pierce looked for the book. Trying to drown out everything around me, I focused all my energy on the rocks. I imagined them light as feathers, just blowing them in the wind, freeing Lolly. But it was no use, the rocks were too big, even for me.

"Wes!" I heard Declan yell behind me and I turned just in time to see my father's demon form throw Wes across the room. His body hit the wall of the cave like a rag doll before landing with a sickening thud onto the rocks.

That surge of power I was searching for, shot through my body like fireworks, and without even thinking about it, the rocks that trapped Lolly's leg flew into the air. She scrambled a few feet away before the rocks landed back down where her leg once was. Knowing she was free and safe, I ran towards Wes but before I could reach him, the rocks that laid around his body exploded into the air. Smoke and dust swirled around blocking any view of where he was or if he was even all right.

Then slowly the dust and debris cleared and what I saw shocked me so much that I fell down to my knees in awe.

Where Wes body had been was now a demon form with dark gray skin, and horns that curved down on either side of its head. It wasn't as big as Azazel or Zozo's demons, but he was still a giant. Most of all it was his eyes that shocked me. The other two had black soulless eyes that were like looking into complete nothingness. But Wes' demon had his human gray-blue eyes, that looked at me with caring, longing, and fear.

Before either one of us could move, a fireball hit me in the back of the head causing me to fall down. I was dazed but not severely hurt. Looking around I caught sight of Shax laughing like an idiot.

A growl erupted in the air making the whole cave shake once again. I looked over to see Wes's demon charging across the platform. Azazel and Zozo stopped him and began taking turns punching and beating him. Declan, Mr. B, and Lucas were trying to take on Shax and Barbas, keeping them away from the fighting behemoths. With everyone tied up, I tried to search for the book.

I crawled around my hands and knees, carelessly scraping my skin on the jagged rocks, only stopping long enough to search out the others. Ms.Pierce was searching as well, while Sage was standing by Lolly. The only person unaccounted for was Alicia, which didn't exactly mean she wasn't around.

Though only a small amount of time went by, it felt like ages of demons fighting and growling, rocks and fireballs flying around. On more than one occasion I was forced to duck down or dart out of the way of incoming objects.

A deep cry filled the area causing me to jump out of my skin before looking over, worried that it was Wes who was injured. A breathed out a sigh of relief as I watched Wes' demon hold Azazel's arm in a twisted position. The limb looked broken in an unnatural bend. Wes threw him to the ground where Azazel's body began to wither and shrink back to his human form. Once fully reformed, Azazel limped over to where his other friends were still currently battling Mr. B, Lucas, and Declan. He held his lame arm like a whimpering child, causing Barbas to leave the fight and take his side like a hovering parent who's baby just got injured on the playground.

That action left Shax taking on three attackers at once, which didn't last long. Mr. B and Declan each grabbed one of Shax's arms, leaving him wide open to receive punch after punch from his own son. When it finally looked like he couldn't take anymore, Lucas summoned a giant fireball between his hands and pushed it forward. The fire hit Shax in the face and spread all over his body. Mr. B and Declan let him go as his body crumbled to the ground, his screams of pain bouncing off the walls and filling my ears.

With Barbas and Azazel on the sidelines, the only one actively fighting was Zozo. Though he was twice Wes' size, it seemed he wasn't much stronger. The two landed blow after blow, knocking each other around the platform like punching dummies.

I needed to end this, and I needed the book to do that.

Upping my speed, I search all over. Under rocks, around the platform, everywhere. When I finally felt like the search was useless, an object caught my eye. I ran over to the opening of the cave and found the book laying in a pile of rocks and dust.

"I have it!" I yelled holding the book into the air.

Dumb move.

Alicia appeared in front of me with a rock and slammed it into my head. I fell to the ground and the book went sprawling down the rocks. Alicia darted for it, sending her body down the rocks, scraping and cutting herself along the way. Just as she reached it, I shot my hand out in her direction, "No!"

Alicia flew across the room, her head hitting a rock and her body falling limply to the ground.

The Zozo demon howled like he was the one in pain before smashing is hands on the stone platform. A large chunk of the cave came following down and landed right on top of Wes, covering his demon body completely.

I tried to run to him, to help him. Falling and stumbling over the rocks I attempted to free him like I did Lolly, but I couldn't concentrate as black dots danced in my eyes. Suddenly my vision grew bright like someone was flashing a light on my face and I thought for sure I was going to lose consciousness. My body fell to the ground as I still tried reaching out to Wes. But as I focus on the stone platform where he was trapped, I spotted several figures dressed in gold armor jumping around the platform.

Though I knew I shouldn't have strained my body any further, I had to see what was going on.

There was five of them, two girls and three boys. I say that because they weren't adults, they looked like us, like teenagers. One of the boys, a blonde, shot a ball of light at the Zozo demon causing him to shrink back down to his human form. The two females zeroed in on the motionless Shax and with a swirl of their hands turned his body into smoke that slowly seeped back into the cracks in the dark portal stone. The other two boys were sparring off with Barbas while Azazel crept along the cave walls and limped off into the darkness of the tunnel.

I tried to call out to these new being, to tell them that he was getting away, but when I opened my mouth nothing came out. No matter how hard I tried the only thing that I was able to do was let out raspy breaths.

Looking back at the stone platform, I watched Zozo grabbed Alicia's limp body and disappear into thin air. The only demon left was Barbas, kneeling down in surrender in front of the five teens. That last thing I saw before my vision went black was Barbas turning into smoke and crawling back to where he came from.
