Happy Reading!
Sameer got off the bus, it was dark outside. He glanced around. The whole bus stop was crowded. Some were getting off the bus, while others were boarding it.
He took his bags. He had informed Nanu when he had reached Jaipur. His remaining bags will come by tomorrow along with his guitar and bike, which were his most precious possessions.
He enquired about the university and its residential area and he came to know that it was situated at a walking distance from this bus stop. The noise of the crowd irritated him so he put on his walkman. He had already asked for directions, so there was not much problem as it was just a straight road that led to Banasthali University. He handed over the bags to a coolie, asking him to drop at the university and decided to walk himself.
He observed a market lined up just in front of the bus stop. It was not a huge market but most of the items were available. Due to the wide and well-maintained sidewalk, shops were set up on the footpath. There were different kinds of artistic pieces along with garments and food stalls. He decided to come here tomorrow and explore the whole place.
He was still lost in the place when suddenly someone came, grabbed his shoulder and pushed him back with such force that his back collided with the wall behind the sidewalk and reflexively his hands came around her waist. All of it happened so quickly that for a minute none of them could register anything.
He looked ahead at the road which was right in front of his eyesight and saw a big truck zoomed past where he was walking a moment back. If not saved by this girl...he was not sure what would have happened to him.
The area where they stood was isolated. It was ahead from the place where the market ended. The only voice coming here was of the vehicles passing by and their fast breathing.
He then glanced down at the girl, eyes closed, hair falling on her shoulders and covering the half of her face.
Still panting, with her eyes closed, Naina tried to speak, "Jab chalna aata nahi hai toh sadak par chalte kyu ho?"
After a second, when Naina opened her eyes, she forgot to breathe and got lost in those same eyes, again.
Unaware of the fact that the girl was Naina, his eyes bored into her.
They don't know why, none of them tried to part away or avert their eyes from each other. They were looking at each other, as if there was no tomorrow. Time passed but no one blinked. They shared a deep eyelock.
It was the loud horn of another truck passing by which broke their trance. The closeness, then registered to both of them. They immediately parted away, conscious of the proximity, and the moment they shared.
Naina, fixed her appearance, tucking her hair behind the ears. She was embarrassed. Not even in her dreams, she had touched a boy. It was that truck which was speeding towards him, which made her do this. Her morals were not above anyone's life, she had thought. But she had never imagined that the boy would turn out to be Sameer.
It took him a few minutes to recognize her face and when he did, his eyes widened, "Naina?"
Naina hadn't even recovered from that incident, when her name from his mouth and the fact that he remembered her, made her heart dance.
She tried to pretend that she didn't recognise Sameer either, "Sameer?"
Even though she felt like chiding him for his negligent behaviour, she questioned him in a voice as casual as possible, "Tum theek ho na?"
The truck he saw some minutes back flashed in front of his eyes and he doesn't know how to thank her.
Sameer nodded, "Thank you for saving my life."
How could she tell her, she saved her life and not his.
"Thank you ki koi jarurat nahi hai...mujhe nahi pata tha wo tum ho...tumhari jagah koi bhi rehta toh uske liye bhi main yahi karti..." She really meant the words she said. "Itni badi truck tumhare samne se aa rahi thi...dhyaan kaha tha tumhara?...agar ek sec ki bhi deri hoti toh..." she closed her eyes, fear gripping her. Her eyes moisted imagining the consequence of the accident. She joined her hands and thanked her bhagwan ji!
Sameer saw her with a furrowed face. What was she doing?
She would have literally shouted at him for his carelessness but she meant nothing to him, therefore she has no right over him, not for scolding either.
"Tum yaha kya kar rahi ho?" Sameer enquired glancing around, his hands in his pocket.
Her attention went towards his appearance. He was wearing a turtleneck red full sleeves t-shirt and light blue jeans. He was looking very handsome and cute in this outfit. How can someone not fall in love with this cute face?
Not getting any reply from her, he repeated his question to which Naina's trance broke and she immediately averted her eyes from him. The last thing she wanted was to get caught while staring at him.
"Main toh yahi padhti hu na..." Naina smiled at him, still in a daze. She had become a nervous wreck by now. Her mind was numb and brain was not functioning well.
"Oh...yes...right!" It occurred to him now that she was already studying here. He was the one who came now. He sighed, 'Pandit sahi keh raha tha, ye behenji toh gale hi pad gayi hai mere, yaha bhi sehna padega iss teacher ki chamchi ko' and his mind replied back, 'Beta issi behenji ki wajah se tu yaha sahi salamat khada hai'
"Tum yaha kaise?" Naina managed to ask, smiling nervously. She started walking and Sameer followed her.
"Mera bhi yaha admission hua hai..." he replied without any excitement or happiness.
He looked at her, "Headboy competition main nahi Arjun jeet gaya...tumhe toh pata hi hoga na?"
Naina nodded without any trace of happiness for his brother. He had imagined her to be smiling widely on his brother's victory. Her brother won so why is she sad?
"Tum khush nahi ho? Tumne suna na dhang se...tumhara bhai jeet gaya headboy competition" He mocked himself more than her.
Preeti had again called her a few days back to tell her the outcome of the headboy competition. She pretended to be happy and even congratulated Arjun Bhaiya over the call, but deep down she was not really happy. She smiled faintly, "Haan...khush toh hu...but mujhe jyada khushi hoti agar tum headboy competition jeet-te toh!"
He had not expected her to say this, "What?"
"Haan...maine tumhe notes aur tips isliye diye the na taki tum jeeto...toh mere liye jeet tabhi hoti jab tum jeet-te..."
Her words just splashed cold water on his face. She wished for him to win. She prayed for him to win. And he was cursing her a few minutes back.
He wouldn't have really told her all of these details but after knowing how much him, winning the headboy competition, meant to her, he decided to disclose her because she deserves to know.
He looked ahead, "Mere sirf dus marks kam aaye Arjun se...isliye headboy usse bana diya gaya...aur mere achhe marks aane ke karan Principal Sir ne mera admission yaha karwa diya...inaam ke taur par..." His tone was normal, but Naina felt he was not that happy about his admission here. Maybe he misses his family and friends.
"Tum khush nahi ho?" Naina asked, looking at his face. Sameer was shocked, how did she know that...did she have some powers?
It didn't go well with his system that someone read him correctly and he replied bluntly, trying not to sound rude, "Agar apne ghar se aur dosto se dur kar diya jaye toh woh inaam nahi saza hoti hai..." he then looked at her, "Agar Nanu ne force nahi kiya hota toh mujhe koi shauk nahi tha yaha aane ka..."
Yes it was true that Naina couldn't be more thankful to God for bringing him here but if he would have won the headboy competition she would have been happier in spite of him not being here. She was not selfish. His happiness mattered to him more than her own happiness.
She smiled widely, "Nanu kafi khush hue honge na?"
He nodded with a smile, widest she had ever seen.
She glanced at him, "Mujhe bhi bahut Khushi hui ye jankar ki tumne itna achha pradarshan diya...main janti hu tumne kitni mehnat ki hogi" she thought sometime before saying it, "I am very proud of you Sameer!"
He was not the one to be happy about this but after hearing her words, warmth spread in his heart. But he, being Sameer, didn't smile and just hummed.
As they reached a huge gate, Naina informed him, "Aa gayi university..." She then explained to him about everything that was here and the things he needed to know. He paid just half attention to her, and was engrossed in exploring the place, glancing at each and every corner, as they walked till the office.
After reaching there, Sameer showed the warden his certificate, and the warden told him to move to Block B, room no. 315. He took his bags and went, climbing stairs to the third floor.
Naina could not be more happy for the day. He'll be living in the same block as hers, just a floor above. She couldn't believe her eyes when she saw Sameer. She never imagined him to be here. It was like impossible! But she didn't know that it was not the end and there was some chance. She will try her best to tell Sameer that she loved him.
Suddenly she remembered the letter, the love letter she had written to Sameer and her smile vanished. She herself had kept it in his notebook, did he read it? She gulped with fear. No! This can't be true. If he would have read it, he wouldn't have been this normal while talking to her. Should she ask him? She shook her head 'agar usne letter nahi padha hoga aur maine puch liya toh usse letter ke baare main pata chal jayega'. After his behaviour today she was sure he hadn't read it. Yes. He hadn't read it. But the thing was, where did that letter go?
Sameer was seated in his bed. He was still not over the fact that he had lost. How would he tell this to her mother? How will he prove himself in front of his step-brother Rohan? His teeth clenched, he's not obliged to inform this to his mother, and he'll not. With these thoughts roaming around his head, he slept due to day's tiredness.
Next day, Naina dressed up an hour before. She was very happy to be able to see Sameer everyday. She looked at her hands which pushed Sameer yesterday. Her heart never beated so fast it did yesterday.
She went to balcony and looked at the Sun. She twirled, danced. The happiness of Sameer being here was something she was not able to contain. She was not able to sleep the whole night, and was just smiling like a maniac. She wanted to share this to someone.
She was standing near the stairs of the ground floor, waiting for Khushi. She then saw Sameer, looking very handsome in their school dress. The way he descended the stairs, the way he walked, the way he adjusted his bag while walking, Naina couldn't stop looking at him.
He passed her and was walking towards the ground, before she could stop him, Khushi came from behind and shouted, "Booo!!"
Naina jumped with one hand on her heart. Khush started laughing but stopped quickly fearing her anger. But to her contrary Naina smiled wide and hugged her.
"Kya kar rahi hai behen? Pagal wagal ho gayi hai kya?" Naina stopped and parted. Khushi looked at her like she had grown horns.
"Khushi! Khushi! Khushi! Main tujhe bata nahi sakti...main kitni khush hu!" Naina's smile grew wider.
"Mujhe bhi toh bata kaun hai wo jiski wajah se teri ye muskan nahi ja rahi..." Khushi pinched her cheeks.
Before Naina could tell her something, Khushi looked ahead and whispered, "Sameer?." Naina looked at her shocked at hearing his name. How did she know about Sameer? She then followed her gaze which was on Sameer, who was standing a little far from them, talking to the warden.
"Tu..tu janti..." Before Naina could complete her sentence Khushi sprinted towards him, shouting his name.
Don't hate me for this!
Next update on Saturday.
