Chapter Eight-Stay

"Thank you," I tell Tony sincerely. "I think I'll definitely stay the night." Wanda grins at this and I continue when Steve walks over. "That is if Steve doesn't mind letting me borrow his clothes a little longer," I add and look up at him. His brows furrow, but he can't wipe the smile off his face.

"I don't mind. You're staying?" He confirms and I nod.

"Pretty sure any guy here would happily let you wear their clothes, Rea," Bucky says and smirks proudly at Steve. "Glad you and a girl are finally going steady." I understand that reference and smile at Bucky while Steve huffs.

"Dinner!" Natasha comes in and breezes past all of us to the dining table, boxes of pizza in hand. Steve locks eyes with me, looking smug. He was right. Pizza night. Steve flicks his chin to the table and I follow him over, sitting beside him at the oval. Everyone files over and distributes paper plates around before sitting. It's Steve, me, Wanda, Nat, Vision who I haven't met yet, a couple of empty seats, Bruce, Tony, Sam, and Bucky.

"So, when are you going to show me your mind mojo?" Tony asks as I hand him a slice of pizza. My head shakes of its own volition.

"Keep bugging her about it and she might make you dance like a chicken for eternity." Bruce comments quietly and we all turn to him, surprised. Giggling, I accept Steve's plate and serve him before he serves me.

"Not possible. Funny though." Bruce raises his eyebrows and I'm quick to explain. "My influence doesn't last forever. Only until the person does the thing or it just wears off."

"Know how long it lasts?" Bucky asks. The first time he's asked about it.

"Uh, not really. I've never stuck around someone long enough to see." I answer and he nods before inhaling half of a piece of pizza.

"You said you couldn't get into someone's head though." Wanda poses, her interest obvious by the fact she hasn't even touched her pizza.

"Shouldn't forget your food. But, yes, you're right. Like Bruce said earlier my ability is only auditory. Simple and easy with no maneuvering around thoughts or anything." I answer slowly so she has the chance to eat.

"Have you ever tried it on someone who was expressly against whatever the action was?" Bruce asks and I nod.

"Don't think any of those gang members particularly wanted to confess." Sam jokes and the table rumbles with quiet humor.

"No, no, I meant someone who knew what you can do and fought against it." Bruce specifies and all eyes turn to me. I swallow my bite of cheese pizza and bite my tongue lightly, actively avoiding Steve's gaze.

"Uh, yeah. Once. The person still did what I said." I don't elaborate and I'm surprised no one presses the issue. "Anyways, I hear there's a petition for jet skis?" The table erupts, mostly from Tony and the topic is effectively changed. It's a nice dinner. The most recent meal I've had with someone was with Steve and before that Don, so it's definitely a nice change. A man named Rhodes, or Rhodey as Tony says, comes mid-meal and it's obvious he's been gone for a while from the happy reception. He seems kind and shakes my hand even after finding out my ability.

Nearly all the pizza is gone by the time everyone is done and we split off slowly. Vision leaves first after I insist on shaking his hand. I'm gifted with a smile before he just walks through a wall. Sam leaves next with the assurance that Tony will have donuts delivered in the morning and Natasha leaves just after him. Wanda's eyes are getting a little heavy as we listen to Tony and Bruce go on about my possible capabilities.

"We'll see tomorrow, gentlemen. For now, I think an actual bed will do me some good." I stand and everyone follows, making me smile. "Wanda, could you show me to my room? Not sure if I remember the right floor." Steve meets my eyes knowingly and I shrug. "Night everybody."

"Same." Wanda echoes as we walk out, Steve trailing behind me. A chorus of similar notions comes behind us and Steve takes my hand at the door. Wanda smirks and walks to the elevator to wait for me. I meet Steve's blue eyes expectantly and he drops my hand. Suddenly I realize he has no clue what he wanted to say.

"An eventful day." He starts and I grin, the warm and fuzzies gathering in my throat to choke me.

"To say the least, yes. I have a feeling most of my days will be here." His eyes brighten.

"So, you'll stay? Work towards being part of the team?"

Slowly, I nod. "I'll sleep on it, but yeah. I think so." I reply and he smiles.

"That's great!" His enthusiasm is charming and has me leaning in just a little too close for casual comfort. "See you in the morning then." He ends, calming himself down a little. I purse my lips and nod.

"See you in the morning." I agree and hold his gaze a second longer before walking over to Wanda and slipping in the elevator. Those bright, blue eyes are seared into the back of my eyelids, so I leave my eyes closed for a moment.

"I'm glad you're staying." My eyes flutter open when I hear Wanda speak. "When I first got here, it was a hard adjustment because I'd done some things in the past. I can control minds, in depth, so that doesn't always go over well." She explains and I chuckle.

"I understand. It isn't really a talent that inspires trust, right?" I question and she sighs while shaking her head. My eyes examine her in detail, this time. Tired eyes, her hair a mess of auburn waves, nails covered in chipping black paint. As I chew the inside of my cheek, I make the decision to look out for this one when I can. "Well, I trust you Maximoff. Anyone who has power like you and uses it to help people can't be too bad." I tease lightly. Hopeful eyes meet mine and her lips lift.

"Like you?" She combats and I laugh in return.

"Touché. Actually, I have an idea." We walk out of the elevator side by side, so I drop back just a little so she's leading. "Tony and Bruce are having me do a brain scan tomorrow. Why don't you come and poke around my head? See if you can figure things out without the science speak." She blinks as we stop in front of the still open door of the bedroom.

"Are you sure?" She asks and I nod.

"As long as you're comfortable, I'm fine with it," I answer honestly, slipping inside the room and folding back the comforter with an excited flourish. Despite not being home, this will definitely be more comfortable than the back of my van.

"Thank you." She breathes, shock wearing off. A smile takes over my face as I head over to her again. Looking at her face, I see a lonely kid. Me, in a warped mirror.

"You and me, we'll stick together. Deal?" Her grey-green eyes soften and she nods. "Always have a stash of the good candy, fuzzy socks to share, bathroom products," I pause to take in Wanda's enthusiastic nod, "and we can get Natasha in on all that too. Up to you on that one." Silence fills the room as Wanda absorbs this, then smiles.

"That sounds really great." She sighs and I nod. "Tomorrow then."

"Tomorrow," I affirm and she softly shuts the door. Smiling a bit, I walk into the bathroom and take a blissfully hot shower before crawling into the bed with the most erotic moans of my life. Sleep hits me before the blankets have even settled on my body.

"So, I swear it didn't seem like this much in my van." Bucky and Sam roll their eyes in unison while Steve shakes his head.

"All we'd be doing is sitting on our asses anyway, so trust me, this isn't a problem," Steve assures me kindly as they head up on their fifth and final trip to my room with an armful of books. I step forward and gather the blankets with Wanda's help before stepping away. Looking at the empty van feels weird.

"Ready to go, ma'am?" A soldier asks, twirling my keys on his finger.

"Drive slow," I tell him and he nods before entering my home and driving it towards the garage. Wanda puts a hand on my arm and we head inside.

"You know I could've moved all of this stuff with my mind, right?" She asks hesitantly and I smirk.

"Yes, I do." I watch her cute face as she realizes I just trolled my new friends. Giggling, we exit the elevator and walk back to my now chaotic room.

Steve was nice enough to drive me to my van this morning and after a long argument with Don, plates were thrown, we got my van and my things back to the facility. Books are now stacked all over the floor and Wanda and I deposit the many blankets on the bed. "Phew." I breathe and grin at my helpers. "Thanks, everybody."

"Yeah, mention a time limit next time Rea." Sam steps forward and pecks my cheek before patting the guy's shoulders and jogging out.

"Sorry!" I call out and Tony's head suddenly appears at my door.

"Damn. Need a bookshelf? Got some in storage." He offers as he steps in and I perk up.

"God, that would be fantastic. Gentlemen?" I turn teasingly to Bucky and Steve.

"Aw hell no." Bucky answers and Wanda steps forward.

"I'll take this one, I think." She says and we both watch Steve and Bucky's faces change as they get it.

"Son of a...alright. Payback's a bitch, Reagan." Bucky shakes his head at me as Wanda and I laugh. Steve just shakes his head with a cute little smile on his face. I'm becoming more and more fond of that little grin and it's dangerous.

"I'm not going to begin to try and understand this. Rea, ready for a gross violation of your brain's privacy?" Tony asks and I nod.

After tiptoeing over the piles of books on the floor, I pause at the door. "But honestly, thanks you two. Although, you both might want to work out a bit more. Flabby biceps." Both men scoff.

"Keep going. You're just making the consequences worse." Steve teases and I finally leave to follow a laughing Tony down the hallway. Time to be a lab rat.
