The Twin Car

"Uggghhh, I can't breathe in here!" Mabel whined.

"Then stop covering your nose, duh." Waddles rolled his eyes.

"You're just jealous that I can cover my nose and you can't."

"Well, yes. You're not wrong about that." he replied, "But I'm not the one who wanted me to be a pig."

The two had found themselves in a car that smelled like being in a dumpster. Which made sense, considering every step they took led to a piece of garbage. There was rotten food, trash, and even dead animals, which wasn't a pleasant sight.

Finally, the two found the door and rushed out of the car as quickly as possible. Once they escaped, the two gasped for air after experiencing what it felt like to live in a dumpster.

"That was definitely one of the worst cars we've been in," Mabel commented in between coughs.

"I'm really hoping the next car has showers. Or literally, ANYTHING to make me stop smelling like the blend of moldy cheese and feet dipped in fish oil." Waddles added.

Mabel shuttered. "Please don't remind me that I stepped in that."

They headed over to the next car, Mabel opened the door, but before the two could walk in through the doorway, the two were stopped by two blue crayon persons, each putting an arm in front of them. The two had matching police uniforms and black sunglasses.

Mabel blinked, surprised at the unexpected halt. "Um, what's going on?"

"Our apologies, Miss," the crayon on the left started.

"It's our job to welcome everyone who enters here to our wonderful home, Twin Town." the other continued.

"Welcoming us by stopping us from going any further?" Waddles asked bluntly.

"Entering our town is more complicated than you think," one answered.

The other nodded and continued, "You see, we have specific rules if you'd like to be here."

"Rules...?" Mabel thought aloud. She tilted her head a bit to remove the officer blocking her sight to get a better look at the place. There were tons of denizens roaming the streets, just like in any other town. The only big difference was that each civilian seemed to have some sort of pair with the other. The panda with the sunglasses getting an ice cream had another just like it by their side, also wearing sunglasses and getting ice cream along with them. Two child toothbrushes were playing on the swings together, both the same color and size. Heck, even the stores, houses, stop lights and signs all had a partner to go with the other.

Looking back at the two crayon police officers, she noticed how they both looked exactly alike.

And then it clicked.

It was clear now. The rules of the town were even in the name; it's that,

"Everyone in the town has to have a twin," Mabel concluded aloud.

"Wow, you're pretty smart to figure that out." the officer, next to her, complimented.

"Oh, is that all?" Waddles shrugged and attempted to continue walking, "Well, we'll be out of your hair, or whatever's on your heads, once we leave through the other side of this-"

He was cut off and stopped again by the other crayon officer. "Apologies, uh, sir?" he apologized, "But you two both might smell equally disgusting, but that won't cut it. Sorry, but we're going to have to arrest you."

Mabel's eyes widened. "What?! And also, hey! It's not our fault we smell like this!"

"Tell it to the judges." both the officers said at the same time as they handcuffed each of them.

The two were dragged to the town prison, the citizens all watching them and muttering to each other about the fact that they didn't have a twin. It was seen as a disgrace and shameful to not have a twin in this town and, for that, the two had to stay in jail until they, somehow, got a twin.

Mabel and Waddles were put in separate cells, both next to each other, and were exactly alike. They were thrown in there and locked up by the officers.

"We're sorry we have to do this," one of the officers started.

"But the rules are the rules." the other concluded.

The two nodded together and left the prisoners to return to their post.

Waddles was put into the cell on the left, sighed, and kicked the cell bars in defeat. "Man, and here I thought I'd have a clean resume." he loomed over to try to see his friend in the other cell, "How are you holding up, Mabel?"

He couldn't see her because she had hidden in the corner of the cell, hugging her knees. She was mumbling hardly audible words, the only word that Waddles could make out was "twin."

"T- twin Town..." she mumbled, "H- he would love to search around this place..."

"Mabel?" Waddles continued to try to get her attention, "Mabel!"

Finally, after three shouts, Mabel heard her name being called out and woke up from her daze. "Huh? Waddles?"

"Yeah," he responded from the other side of the wall next to her, "Are you okay?"

Mabel sighed and pulled her legs closer to her, "Sorry. This place is just giving me bad feelings; it might even be worse than the last car."

"Seriously? How so?"

Mabel took a deep breath and started explaining her dilemma. "This town... it just-" she bit her lip and sighed, "I have a twin, and he's not here. And that's just- ugh! Never mind, it's stupid."

Waddles frowned, somewhat understanding how she was was feeling but needed to hear more of her side. "Go on, I don't think it's stupid."

Mabel smiled sadly and continued, "Dipper is my twin my brother, we used to do everything together. But lately, before I got on the train, we've been sort of distant. And thinking about it now, it's all my fault."

"Why do you think that?"

"I haven't exactly been the best older twin sister," she confessed, "I would usually call him names as a joke, but maybe I had been taking it too far... After all, just before I got here, it was because I made fun of him he got upset and said he didn't want to go to Gravity Falls with me."

She felt tears falling down her cheeks and sniffed. "We were a great team. Even the townspeople called us the Mystery Twins." she chuckled lightly before being saddened again, "Together we could do anything, but now... I know he's probably glad I'm gone."

Waddles frowned after hearing all that she had said. He never expected Mabel to say things like this, he knew her mostly as a positive person. But then again, he wouldn't know her as well as someone like her twin brother would.

"Mabel, all this regret that you're feeling just proves that you're willing to become a better sister," he attempted to encourage her, "And you have been doing better! You miss Dopper, while before you got here, you were willing to leave him behind."

"His name is Dipper," Mabel corrected, "And I don't know... Maybe I deserve to be here forever so he can live a better life without me."

"Being on the train isn't a punishment, Mabel," he informed, "It's a place to learn about yourself and your mistakes so when you get back, things will be different for the better."

Mabel let go of her knees and rested her legs on the floor. She thought of what Waddles said, wishing to believe him but still had a small hint of doubt.

"Do you really think he'd want me back after all I've done to him?" she questioned.

"You two are siblings. Twins, even." Waddles replied, "If I know anything about a relationship between a brother and sister, it's that despite how different you might be compared to each other, you both have a close connection that can't break."

Mabel smiled, touched by his words. "Thanks, Waddles, I really needed to hear that."

"No problem," Waddles nodded, "It's what we companions are here for."

Mabel chuckled and suddenly a lightbulb lit in her head with an idea.

"I've got an idea of how to get us out of here."

"What is it?"

"You can change to look like me and then we'll look like twins. I'm sure they'll let us out with that," she suggested.

"I thought you didn't like me changing though?" Waddles pondered, "Especially not into specifically you."

"Well, I can't force you to be whatever I want." she admitted, mostly to herself, "And if it'll help us get out of here then we should do it."

Waddles smiled and nodded. He glowed for a brief second before growing taller and was now on his feet, looking exactly like Mabel. He grinned and swayed a bit, playing with the skirt he now had on. "Oh, how I've missed this."

Mabel chuckled. "Alright then, let's try to get the attention of the officers now." She stood up from the corner she was sitting in and peeked through the bars of her cell to see if any of the officers were out there.

Luckily, the two blue crayon officers had switched posts now with the red crayon officers so they were now working to watch the prisoners.

Mabel saw them and grinned. "Hey, officers! Over here!" she called out loudly to try to get their attention.

It was hard not to hear her shouts and the two walked over to the cell where they thought they heard the sound come from.

"What seems to be the trouble, ma'am?" one officer asked the two of them in front of the duplicate Mabel that was really Waddles.

"Actually, officers," Mabel knocked on the bars with a grin, "I was the one who was calling for you."

The officers looked over and their eyes widened with surprise to see another of the same girl.

"You have a twin now!" they both cheered excitedly at the same time.

"Yup!" Mabel grinned and nodded, "Sooooo, does that mean we can be let out here now?"

"Oh, absolutely!" one answered with a nod as the two got their keys to unlock the cells.

"I don't know how you girls did it, but we're glad we can let you out," the other said, "We like to keep our town happy and peaceful; not really a big fan of punishing newcomers."

"It's alright." Waddles assured as he stepped out of his cell once it was opened for him, "It was an interesting experience, but an alright one."

Mabel nodded as she was let out of her cell as well. She was now able to see her duplicate next to her and smiled, glad to see that Waddles looked happy.

"Sorry again for putting you in jail," one officer apologized.

"We hope you have a pleasant time here at Twin Town and hope to see you again soon!"

The officers waved goodbye to them; Mabel and Waddles waved back as they left the police station.

Once outside, the two got a better view of the town; finding it was very peaceful and beautiful. Everyone looked happy and it seemed like a nice place to live. One thing Mabel noticed was that most pairs of twins would hold hands together. It didn't seem like a romantic gesture, but more of a display of a strong bond of friendship.

She looked over at Waddles and offered her left hand to him. "I think we should hold hands so we don't stick out too much like last time."

Waddles tilted his head and looked around, noticing all the others that held hands too. "Hm, I guess you're right." He took her hand and gave her a warm smile, "I found the door already so let's get going."

Mabel nodded as she stared at their hands together, an idea forming in her head. "You wanna skip with me?" she blurted her idea out.

Waddles gave her a weird look. "What's skipping?"

"Well, it's, um..." Mabel tried to think of a way to explain the question but couldn't find a good answer, "It's something me and Dipper would do when we were little, mostly when we would walk to the park together. Just follow me and you'll get the hang of it."

Waddles shrugged and Mabel slowly started to skip while holding his hand. Waddles watched her feet move and tried to get the hang of it. Slowly but surely, he was moving the same pace and beat as her and the two were happily skipping together.

Mabel giggled, not remembering the last time she had this much fun with a friend, and the sound of scrolling came from her free hand. She looked over to see the new green number "48".

She smiled softly to herself and looked forward again to see the door in front of her. When she attempted to open it though, it wouldn't budge.

Mabel stared at the door, thinking. "Maybe... we have to do it together?" she proposed, "In this car, everyone does everything together, after all."

"Hm." Waddles shrugged, "It's worth a shot."

The two each put their hands on a handle and spun them together, the door now opening to the outside.

Mabel grinned and clapped proudly. "Yes!" she exclaimed and attempted to fist-bump Waddles, "Mystery twins!"

Waddles tilted his head, confused while staring at her hand. "Um... what?"

Mabel paused and looked down at her fist, now realizing what she just said and did. She blushed, feeling embarrassed, and quickly hid her hand behind her.

"Sorry, it's just a thing me and my brother would do,"  Mabel mumbled as the two started leaving the car.

"Oh. I see." Waddles nodded as he changed himself back into the pig he's been portraying as for a while, "It's okay."

"Actually," Mabel brought up, "We haven't done it in a while."

"Well once you get home, you can do it all you want," Waddles said with motivation, "But while we wait, we should make our own handshake and catchphrase."

Mabel smiled at him and chuckled. "Sounds good to me."
