The Hill Car

"WOOOOO!" Mabel cheered loudly after going through another loop on the roller coaster she was on.

The cart slowed and came to a stop, meaning the ride was over. Mabel was in the front with her arms up happily. "Again!" she exclaimed excitedly.

"Never... again..." Waddles' voice grumbled as he slowly crawled out of the seat behind Mabel. He made it out and was looking a bit green, seeming he would throw up at any moment.

At the moment, the two were at some sort of amusement park car. The entrance, access to rides, and food were all free so the two decided to take some time to have fun with the car they stumbled on.

Except, Waddles wasn't having much fun after going on the triple loop roller coaster five times after Mabel had convinced him to go with some funnel cake.

Mabel looked over at him and noticed his status; she sighed and got out of her seat. "I guess we've gone on that one enough now."

Waddles sent her a deadpan reaction and spoke sternly, "Yes. Definitely. Absolutely."

Mabel paused for a moment after hearing what he said and chuckled. "Haven't heard that one in a while."

Waddles looked at her, confused. "What do you mean?"

She shrugged, "Let's just say I'm pretty sure it was destiny that we met."

The two had left the roller coaster and easily found the door out of the car. Mabel opened the door and the two left.

"I can't wait to see what the next car is!" Mabel thought aloud excitedly, "Maybe it'll be a world made of candy or a place filled with unicorns! Just, hopefully, nice ones this time."

"You've met a unicorn before?" Waddles asked curiously.

"Yeah, but they weren't very nice." she replied, "My friends and I had to wrestle them to get some unicorn hair that we needed."

Waddles gave her a weird look and sighed. "I thought this place was weird but you surprise me every day, Mabel."

Mabel giggled and opened the door to the next car. Her eyes lit up with excitement and smiled widely, expecting her mind to be blown by what was inside the next car, only to be disappointed by the sight she got.

The feeling of thrill slowly died as she and Waddles walked into the car that was painted with large hills with smooth green grass. The wind blew peacefully and hardly a sound was heard.

"Aw man," Mabel whined with defeat, "This place is so boring!"

Waddles took a whiff of the soft air with his eyes closed and smiled softly. "I don't know what you're talking about, this place is nice."

"Nice for you, but boring for me," Mabel remarked, "And since I'm the one who wants to go back home, I make the decision and I say we find the door out of here."

Waddles sent a quick glare at her and sighed. "Fine, lead the way."

Mable smiled, pleased that he listened to her, and just before she took a step the scrolling sound from her hand came again. She paused to look down at her right hand, finding her number had changed to "75".

"Aw, what?!" she exclaimed with frustration and shook her hand violently, "Is this thing broken or something?!"

"The train's never wrong." Waddles commented.

Mabel huffed and let go of her hand. "Whatever, let's just find the stupid door so we can get out of here."

"Lead the way captain." Waddles said sarcastically.

Mabel rolled her eyes and started walking, Waddles following after her.

The two walked in silence trying to find the door; not having much luck. Climbing up and down every single hill wasn't making anything easier but Mabel refused to stop to take a break. The two were climbing up another hill but hearing a familiar voice come out of nowhere stopped them.

"Remember, you can't spell 'escape' without 'companionship!'" the happy voice of the conductor came from the other side of the hill.

Mabel peaked her head out a little to see where the noise was coming from and she noticed a large pod that was identical to the one she came in when she first woke up on the train.

"Uh, companion-shape? Companion-scape..."

The voice from the screen died out when the person in the pod started nervously shaking it, "Hey, come back!" he exclaimed with panic, "That didn't explain anything!"

Mabel watched the frightened boy's reaction to his new surroundings, the scene reminding her of the time she first woke up on the train. She got up from hiding and started to approach him before she was stopped by Waddles biting her shoe.

"Mabel, wait. We don't know anything about this guy."

"Yeah, and that's why I'm going to make sure he's okay," Mabel replied and rushed over to the nervous boy in the pod.

She carefully went up and down the hill and made it to the flat surface where the pod was, approaching him slowly not to scare him even more. He was sitting on his knees and looking down at his hands, his eyes mostly on the glowing green one, questioning what the heck a number was doing there.

"Hi, I'm Mabel! What's your name!" she said quickly and loudly, making the boy flinch and yelp.

He quickly turned around to see her and blinked. He waved slowly at her, "Um, h-hi?" The boy looked about fifteen years old and had an olive complexion and short dark hair. He was wearing a blue letterman jacket with yellow sleeves over a white t-shirt with a red collar, gray jeans, and beige and white sneakers.

"Sorry, if I startled you," Mabel apologized while offering her hand to help him up, "I just wanted to check if you were alright."

The boy took her hand and got up on his feet out of the pod. "Thanks. And I am okay now. Well, actually, not really..." he answered honestly, "I have no idea what's going on and where I am."

"Well, um, what's your name?"

"Oh, I'm Jesse." he answered while pointing to the name on his jacket, "And you said you're Mabel, right?"

"Yup!" Mabel nodded, "And, well, Jesse, you- or, we are on a train. Like, a reeeaaally big train."

Jesse looked around confused, only seeing big green hills and the bright blue sky. "Um, are you sure about that? This doesn't seem like a train."

"This isn't a normal train," she continued, "Right now, we're in one of the many train cars that are all different. So far, this is the most boring one I've been on."

Jesse looked up at the sky and smiled softly, "I don't know, it looks pretty nice to me."

"Yeah, that's what I said." Waddle's voice then appeared next to them.

"Waddles?!" Mabel exclaimed, "When did you get here?"

"About five seconds ago."

"Is that a talking pig?!" Jesse proclaimed surprised and amazed at the same time.

"Actually, I'm a shapeshift-"

"Yup!" Mabel interrupted, answering Jesse's question, "He's my pig and his name is Waddles."

Waddles gaped, shocked to hear Mabel say that he belonged to her. Mabel didn't seem to notice his reaction or even care so he sighed and decided to forget about it.

"Anyway..." Waddles continued, "Mabel, I found the door after you ran off."

Her eyes lit up and clapped. "Really?! Take us!"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm going." Waddles rolled his eyes and started walking to where he saw the door.

"Come with us, Jesse," Mabel offered him, "We'll give you the ropes of the train and maybe even help you get home."

Jesse smiled and nodded. "Alright, thanks, Mabel."

She smiled back and the two started following Waddles to the door. While walking next to him, Mabel noticed the bright green light coming from Jesse's hand as it did hers. She wondered if he had a number too; what number did he have?

"Hey, Jesse," she started, "I just want you to know everything'll be okay; you'll be safe with us. And whatever number you're at, I'm sure we'll bring it down so you can get home."

Jesse looked over at her and then at his hand, reading the number "31" on it. As he did, Mabel leaned over a bit and got a glimpse of his hand, seeing the number and how low it was compared to hers.

"Thirty-one, huh?" Mabel mumbled, "That's, um, not too bad, I guess."

Jesse looked back at her, "What's your number?"

Mabel looked at her hand and sighed. "Seventy-five," she muttered.

"Seventy-five? Is that a bad thing?" Jesse asked, ignorant of how the train worked.

Mabel bit her lip, "Umm..."

"We're here!" Waddles announced once stopping in front of a particular hill. It was just like all the other large hills, but with a big red door on the front of it.

Mabel pushed away the thought about her number and smiled at the door. "Perfect! Let's get going then." She approached the door but before she could get her hands on the knobs the grass of the hill revealed two large grassy hands and covered up the door.

"Hey," a low, slow voice said from the top of the hill, "I'd prefer it if you don't touch me please."

Mabel looked up and quickly looked up to see the top of the hill with eyes and a mouth. "Oh, sorry mister. We didn't know that you were, uh, alive."

"It's alright," the hill assured, "It just makes me uncomfortable when people stare and touch me."

Mabel chuckled awkwardly, "Well, um, we kinda need to leave this car. Like, right now."

"Sorry," he apologized with his muffled voice.

Mabel frowned and looked back at Jesse who just shrugged, not sure what to do.

"Any ideas?"

"I guess I can give it a go?" Jesse stepped in and waved at the hill, "Um, hey, Mr. Hill. Could you, maybe, tell us why you feel so reserved and maybe we can help you?"

The hill looked over at him and sighed. "I'm just tired of everyone using me only to come and leave the car. It would be nice if-"

"OH! I've got an idea!" Mabel cut in and grabbed Jesse's arm, dragging him into running off.

Jesse got startled and looked over to Mabel when running with her. "Hey, what just happened? I think I was about to find a way to help him and he would help us."

"Eh, that would've taken too long." Mabel responded with a shrug, "I've got an even better idea that'll get us out of here in no time."

Jesse looked down with defeat and slowly nodded. "Okay, I guess..."

Mabel grinned and the two made it back to the pod Jesse came from. She went on one end of the pod, attempting to pull it up. "Well?" she eyed Jesse, who was staring at her with confusion, "Aren't you going to help me?"

Jesse quickly nodded and headed to the other end of the pod to help pick it up. It was much heavier than expected but together, the two were able to drag it back to where the door was.

Jesse wiped the sweat off his forehead after letting go of the pod once they got there. "So, what now?"

"We use the pod to quickly run into the door, crashing into it, and BOOM! We're out of here," she answered proudly.

Jesse paled a bit after hearing her plan and quickly shook his head. "No way we're doing that! This hill is a person, we can't hurt him!"

"Don't you want to go home?" Mabel asked, "Or at least see all the other amazing cars that are way better than this one?"

Jesse bit his lip nervously. "I..."

Mabel rolled her eyes and lifted her end of the pod again. "Help me if you want any help," she said sternly. Jesse gulped and quickly lifted the other end of the pod.

"Alright, on three, we charge," Mabel ordered, "One... two... THREE!"

On Mabel's count, the two rushed toward the door and a loud smash accompanied it. Waddles was looking away at the sight with disappointment in his eyes while the hill's eyes were wide with drips of tears made of grass falling down his face.

Mabel and Jesse opened their eyes to see the damage they caused, finding the door completely broken; the doorway wide open to them now.

"We did it!" Mabel exclaimed proudly.

Jesse dropped the pod and frowned. "Y- yeah, we did..."

The scrolling sound of numbers changing then came from both the passengers' hands. The two looked down at their bright green palm to find both their numbers had gone up. Mabel's now showing a "77" and Jesse's at "32".

Jesse frowned and looked over at Mabel who was furious. "Seriously?! What gives?!" she shouted angrily and kicked the pod.

Jesse slowly stepped away after seeing her reaction to the number change and then saw the hill's saddened face which filled him with regret. "I am so sorry," he apologized to him, "I didn't know you'd be so hurt."

"It's okay," the hill sniffed, "I hope you enjoy the next car."

Jesse looked in front of him at the sight of the path to the next train car and then turned to see the view of the calming hills and sky of the car he was still in. "Actually... I think I'll stay here a little longer."

Mabel looked over at him, upset, "What? Jesse, we can't stay here, we gotta move on to the next car!"

"I'm sorry, Mabel," Jesse sighed apologetically, "But I actually like this place and would also like to stay a bit longer. Mostly to get to know my new friend here a bit more."

The hill heard him and blushed lightly, appreciating his kind words.

Mabel stared at him in disbelief and then scoffed, "Fine then. Good luck getting around the train and finding your way back home now." she remarked coldly, "Let's go, Waddles."

Waddles did not seem happy with her but he obliged and walked towards the crumbled door where Mabel was waiting at. He passed by Jesse and gave him a small wave and mouthing the words "good luck" to him. Jesse noticed, softly smiling at him, and waved back.

Mabel waited for Waddles to be by her sighed and huffed. "The next car better not be as frustrating and complicated as this one," she grumbled as the started walking to the next train car.
