The Door Car
"UGH! I can't believe Jesse just left us like that!" Mabel shouted angrily. She and Waddles had just left the hill car, crossing the bridge to the next car.
"I mean...." Waddles mumbled, "I think he had understandable reasonings."
Mabel scoffed, "Who's side are you on?"
Waddles eyed her and sighed, muttering something under his breath that was inaudible.
Mabel rolled her eyes at him and opened the door to the next car. In front of them was...the door out of the car. And next to it was another door? On the other side of it was another door, and another, and another.
"What the...?" Mabel questioned as she walked into the car. Surrounding the room, which was about the size of a normal train car, was completely covered by doors, all identical to the one that brought them in and to the one that would let them out. There were even doors on the ceiling and floor; there was no telling which was the one they needed to leave.
Waddles bit his lip, after seeing the surrounding of the room, he was concerned Mabel would throw another fit. He looked over at her to see her reaction and was surprised to see her laughing.
"Oh, silly train," she chuckled, "Thinking you can frustrate us with another puzzle car? Well, too bad 'cause this one's easy-peasy!"
Mabel grinned proudly and pointed to the door they walked through and drew a line to the door exactly in front of it. "This is the one!" she declared proudly, "It just makes sense. And here I thought the train thought it got the best of us." She marched to the door she said was 'the one' and opened it, only to find that all it led to was a brick wall that led to no where and nothing more than that.
"Wh- what?" she stuttered in shock, "No, this one has to be it!" She looked around and ran to another door to open, "Or maybe it's this one?" All she got was another brick wall.
"Um, Mabel?" Waddles tried getting her attention.
She didn't seem to hear him since she continued to go door after door, not in any order, to open and find which was the right one. Each led to a dead end, leading her to defeat every time.
"This is going to take forever..." she mumbled as she sat down on the floor in defeat.
Waddles frowned seeing her like this and walked over to sit next to her. "Hey, it'll be okay," he tried cheering her up, "We'll find the way out."
"This sort of thing isn't what I'm good at," she sighed, "Dipper would know what to do here..."
"Your brother, Dipper?"
Mabel nodded. "He'd probably take his nerdy journal out and the pen from his hair to start chewing on it while he starts thinking," she chuckled lightly, "He'd probably come up with some sort of mathy equation to find which doors would be least likely the right one. Or if that didn't work, he'd probably try every door and cross out which ones were wrong until he found the right one."
"Why don't you just do that then?" Waddles suggested.
Mabel paused and shook her head. "That's his thing though. I'm not like him." she sighed, "He's super smart and I'm... I'm just the silly one." She sniffed and wiped her eyes from the tears she felt starting to form, "I'm the silly one that wanted to leave him behind."
Waddles tilted his head at her, confused about what she was talking about.
Mabel hugged her knees and sighed, "Sorry, I'll explain that later."
Waddles slowly nodded. "Okay... but anyway, despite whatever happened, you still love and care for your brother, right? You do sound impressed and proud of him, in your way of expressing it."
Mabel sniffed and nodded. "Yeah. Even if he is a nerd, it always helps us get out of sticky situations."
"Maybe take some of the advice from your brother," Waddles proposed, "I'm sure he doesn't talk about all his nerd stuff to just annoy you. I think he'll be proud of you when he gets to know about the puzzle that you solved yourself."
Mabel took a deep breath, stood up on her feet, and looked around the room again; this time slowly taking her time and thought deeply about each door. She examined each wall, the floor, the ceiling, and finally, her eyes met with the door above her right in the center of all the others.
"That one," she claimed as she pointed to the door overhead, "This is the one, I know it."
"How can you tell?" Waddles asked curiously.
"I just..." she fiddled with her fingers and sighed, "I just have that feeling, ya know? Like the one my brother gets when figuring stuff out like this. He's not always right, but he doesn't give up.
Waddles nodded, "Alright, but how do you suppose we get up there?"
Mabel looked around, finding nothing they could use to climb up to the ceiling, unless...
"Waddles, what if ran onto you and you bounce me up, launching me up to the ceiling?" she blurted out her crazy idea quickly.
Waddles stared at her and blinked. "Or... I can change into a ladder," he suggested, "Because I'm a shapeshifter, remember?"
Mabel slowly nodded. "Yeah, I know that..." she mumbled.
Waddles frowned. "What's wrong?"
She fiddled with her fingers and muttered, "I like you being a pig. Being with Waddles just makes me feel better."
Waddles frowned, not expecting her to feel that way. He sighed and walked up closer to her, "Look, it'll be quick and I promise I'll turn back once we get out of here, okay?"
Mabel sniffed and nodded. "Okay..."
Waddles nodded and gestured for Mabel to step back a bit. Once she did, he closed his eyes and started to glow before changing into a ladder that lead straight up to the door Mabel had a hunch was the one.
Mabel watched and took a deep breath before starting to climb up the ladder. Once at the top she grabbed the knobs and slowly started to turn them with her closed.
"Please be the one..." she mumbled quietly to herself. She fully turned the knobs and then felt a gust of wind blowing into her hair once the door opened.
She opened her eyes and grinned, never expected to be so happy at the sight of the dark, red sky outside and the bridge that lead to the next car.
"We did it!" she cheered proudly and rose her hand up, waiting for someone to high-five her. She frowned when no one did, mostly expecting her brother to be there but forgot he wasn't. She sighed, lowering her hand with defeat, and climbed out through the door to the outside. She kissed the ground repeatedly, relieved to finally be out of the car, and looked back at the door, seeing the ladder sticking out.
She quickly went back and, with all her might, pulled the ladder until it came up and out through the door. Mabel took a moment to catch her breath and as she did the ladder started to glow and soon a pig took its place.
Mabel grinned and quickly rushed over to hug him tightly. "Waddles, you're back!" she exclaimed happily.
Waddles tried gasping for air and squirming out of her tight arms, "I, huff, told you."
Mabel noticed his face start to turn a bit purple and quickly let go. "Heh, sorry." she chuckled awkwardly.
Waddles caught his breath, "It's okay; honestly not surprised that would happen."
Mabel chuckled and then heard the scrolling sound of her number changing. She looked down at her hand and read the new number "64".
Waddles loomed over her to get a look at her number. "Huh. Would you look at that."
Mabel looked over at him, "Is this a good thing?"
Waddles nodded, "Very good. But that doesn't mean we can stop."
Mabel nodded and smiled. "Then let's keep going."
