Chapter Two
"What did you do?" Was the first sentence my best friend, Rhys, said to me when I met up with him after Dance in his heavy Spanish accent. Rhys is easily the most attractive guy in the school, scratch that, in the world. With his amazing bone structure and flawless eyebrows, he is easily close to perfect. Rhys's eyes are a dark blue and he has brown hair and large plump lips. Rhys quite fair and is taller than me, like nearly everyone I meet, but only by four inches.
And, despite my description of my best friend, no, I do not like him as more than a friend, he just needs a new girlfriend. Any takers? No. Okay...
I began walking towards my final class, AP Chemistry, "What do you mean?"
"You have that same smile on your face that you had when you put pink hair dye in Blair's shampoo," He replied with a raised eyebrow, crossing his arms, "Or maybe when you somehow made the TVs in your house play backwards."
I chuckled, "That was a good one."
He rolled his eyes, "Or maybe the time you made the lab explode."
"Okay, that was an accident. It happens."
"Well, maybe the time when-"
"Alright, I get it. I do a lot of pranks," I said, "But if you must know, I swapped out Adria's shaving cream for glue."
He chuckled slightly, rolling his eyes at the same time, "one of these days, one of your housemates are literally going to kill you."
"They can try," I chuckled as we arrived at my class, "See ya later."
Walking into class, my eyes lock with the jade green eyes of my cute lab partner, Kayden.
Kayden is the newest kid at this school, taking my place since he started this year, while I started two years before. He moved from London and due to the lack of sunlight in England, he has fair skin. His short hair is a sandy blonde color and is often styled in a 'quiff'. He isn't very muscular but is five inches taller than me, standing at a height of 5'10.
However, after what felt like forever, he tore his eyes away quickly and returned to whatever he was drawing or writing. I sat next to him and looked over to see that he was handwriting a music sheet.
"You write your own music?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
He jumped, probably not expecting me to talk to him. "Um- yeah," he stuttered with his heavy London accent.
"Cool," I smiled, lightly, "Can I look?"
Rather than handing it to me, he quickly shoved the papers in his bag as the teacher walked in, "It's- It's not any good."
Grinning slightly, I raised my eyebrow and leaned in to whisper slightly, "All music is good in its own way. It's about the interpretation."
I leaned back into my seat as Mr. Harris started the lesson and I began to zone out. Staring out the window, I began thinking about my next prank. Should I go with a classic and put all the furniture on the ceiling or come up with a new idea? Maybe I should-
"-You'll be working with your lab partners." What?
Looking over at the board, I internally groaned. A stupid project that I could do by myself but sadly have to work with someone who will probably slow me down. Great...
The bell then rang, signaling the end of the day. As everyone packed up, Mr.Harris continued speaking, "The project will be due at the end of the week. Anyone who doesn't hand it in has wasted a whole year of this class."
The class groan and begin to leave. I turned to Kayden, who was getting his stuff together. "My address is 225 Villere Drive. I have A Capella after school, so be there at five o'clock."
I got up but turned back when I heard Kayden speak, "Um- what?"
I raised an eyebrow, "Be at my house at five o'clock. I have to get this done as soon as possible. This project will be done by tomorrow. Whatever this project is."
Before he could reply, I left the classroom in search of Rhys, which didn't take long since I knew exactly where he was going to be.
"Come on," I grabbed his arm, dragging him away from his bitch of a girlfriend, Mercedes. While Mercedes is really pretty with her brown hair and almond shaped eyes, slim nose, large lips, diamond head shape and light skin, she has personality uglier than a naked mole rat. She was definitely not good enough for Rhys.
"Um, excuse you, we were having a conversation," Mercedes said with a smirk as she tried to remove my hand from Rhys' arm.
"Um, excuse you, I don't care," I rolled my eyes before dragging Rhys towards the choir room.
"I can walk by myself you know."
Ignoring him, I continued to pull him into the room and over to the only other humans I consider friends. Zaviana, Savannah, Dylan and my boyfriend, Blaine, were sat together in the rows, with a seat open next to Blaine for me.
Zaviana is one of my closest friends and is absolutely gorgeous. She is light skinned and is 5'6 with amazing curves. Her dark brown eyes are almond shaped and her curly hair is black and these are accompanied by her slim nose, large plump lips, and heart-shaped head.
Dylan and I were also fairly close too, both of us being very sarcastic and loud helping us to click really well. Dylan is a light-skinned 6'1 latino who scarily looks like Damon sharing the same nose and lip shape as well as having similar hairstyles but Dylan's was darker. He too had dark brown almond shaped eyes but has more of a square head shape.
Savannah is a lot quieter than the rest of us but still awesome and is also extremely pretty. Savannah is a 5'2, slim, Korean girl with fair skin and beautiful blue upturned eyes along with long brown hair, which she dyes different bright colors on holidays. She has a diamond head shape, a slim nose, and thin-ish lips.
Blaine is my boyfriend and while he can be a bit of a dick, he is a pretty cool guy and has the cutest dog in the world called Milo. He is also 6'1 and is pretty well built with his six-pack. He also has fair skin, a long, slender nose, thin lips, brown almond shaped eyes to go with his dark brown hair and a heart head shape.
"Well it's about time you two came, we were about to start without you," Zaviana sais once we sat down.
I shrugged, "Sorry, I had to deal with some trash."
"Mercedes?"
"Mercedes," I nodded before spotting Kaylah walk into the choir room and over to her seat.
Kaylah is the only other person in the school that I would willingly push off a cliff because she is a bitch but sadly, that is illegal. She is a 5'8 Native American girl with tan skin, brown upturned shaped eyes matching her waist-length brown hair, a medium-sized nose, plump lips and a square head shape.
"Looks like the janitor is slacking today," I scoffed.
"There's a trash can right there," The bitch points to a trash can in the corner of the room and says. "Why don't you jump in it?"
"Why don't you? In fact, the dumpster outside is the better choice for you so we can focus on the singers that are actually good."
She rolled her eyes, "Oh please, the only reason you're on the team is because we need another person to qualify for competitions."
I chuckled with a raised eyebrow before sarcastically saying, "I mean, that's why I've had the most lead roles and you've had," I paused for a second to 'count', "oh yeah, none."
"Damn," Dylan muttered in the background causing my smirk to widen and Kaylah, who realized she was beaten, to sit down with a scoff. It always feels good to put dumb bitches in their place.
An hour and a half later and our songs and roles for the competition in two weeks. Of course, I was the soloist doing Skyscraper by Demi Lovato and had a part in the trio with Savannah and Zaviana doing Survivor by Destiny's Child as well as doing the group performance of Cool Kids by Echosmith.
Sadly, it seems some bitches never seem to learn as, on my way out, Kaylah purposely bumped into me causing my lip to curl in disgust, "Don't touch me, I don't want your fleas."
She turns and glares at me before rolling her eyes and saying, "Didn't see you there, Shorty."
I rolled my eyes at her attempt of an insult. I mean, if I wanted to be taller, I would be, "I'm not that hard to notice. I mean, I have more presence in my pinky tip than you have in your entire body."
"Nobody likes your presence," Kaylah scoffed, "You're just a stuck up bitch who thinks she's better than everyone."
I laughed at what she said like it was the most hilarious thing in the world, because it was, "'Nobody likes my presence'? Funny, I wouldn't think that considering I have millions more followers on every social media than you and great friends and a boyfriend. But, I guess you can see it considering you're just a jealous, single, nobody."
Kaylah, once again knowing she is beat, scoffs and walks away, leaving me smirking and chuckling slightly at her stupidity.
Rhys shakes his head as we walk to my locker and says, "You know, it wouldn't kill you to be nice,"
"I'm nice to you," I say, giving him my innocent look, which just made him roll his eyes.
"And that's where the list ends," He replies with a slight chuckle.
I shrug as we reach my locker and he leans on the next to mine, "No, there's also Savannah, Zaviana, Dylan, and Blaine. That's where the list ends."
"None of your housemates," He asks with a grin causing me to give him a look and roll my eyes and for him to laugh.
Opening my locker, I realized that the one thing I wanted wasn't there.
I turned to Rhys with my hand out, "Give me my keys."
"I don't have them," he lied.
I raised my eyebrow, "You're the only other person who knows my combination. Give me my keys."
Rhys sighed, "Maia, the last time you rode your bike, you ran a red light, was almost hit by a speeding truck and narrowly missed a group of school children."
I rolled my eyes with a small sigh, "I already have Jocelyn on my back over that, I don't need you too." I reached into his jacket and pulled out my keys before turning and heading to the school entrance.
"Maia," he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back, "No tienes un factor curativo, ¿recuerdas? Si te golpean morirías." (You don't have a healing factor, remember? If you got hit, you would die.)
Yes, Rhys is human and yes, I broke the rule when I told him I was a supernatural creature and yes, Jocelyn is still on my back over that too, even after a year. Actually, Jocelyn is always on my back, no matter what I do.
"Sí, lo sé pero debería poner mi vida en espera porque no tengo un factor de curación, algo que los humanos no tienen.." (Yes, I know but I should just put my life on hold because I don't have a healing factor, something humans don't have too.)
"Pues no, pero los seres humanos no-" (Well no but humans don't-)
"Don't run red lights? Because they do, all the time." Rhys sighed, knowing he wasn't going to win. I smirked, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a bike to ride."
I grinned as I skipped outside, well tried to. I was stopped once again, but this time by Blaine. Why won't people just let me go to my bike?
"Hey, Maia," he says before pecking my lips, "you ran out of there pretty quickly."
I give him a fake smile, "Hey." It's not that I don't like him, he's just in my way of my bike. No one gets in the way of my bike, "yeah, I have to get back to the house pretty quickly."
"You coming to Kaylah's party this weekend?"
Shit, I wanted to avoid this question.
"I can't, we are going on vacation to London," I lie effortlessly, the fake smile never wavering from my face. To be honest, I hate that bitch and would never be caught dead at one of her shitty parties. Kaylah Starr is my copycat. She dresses like me, acts like me, she even tries to steal my friends and boyfriend. All in all, she is just an annoying bitch.
"Damn," Blaine sighs, "The party is gonna suck without you there."
Wait, he is going to her party, alone? Now, you're probably thinking, 'You don't trust your boyfriend?'. I'm just working on trusting him again after the last time they slept together.
"-Maia? Are you listening to me?"
My fake smile quickly made its way back onto my lips, "Sorry, just zoned out. What did you say?"
"Whatever, it doesn't matter," He scoffs lightly, probably annoyed at how often it happens, before a smile makes his way back onto his face, "I'll see you later okay."
I nodded, with a small smile as he pecked my lips once more before walking off.
I heard an angry sigh followed by the slam of a locker behind me and turned back to see that Rhys had moved from my locker to his and was glaring at Blaine's back. Rolling my eyes at him, I turned back and made my way out of the school, this time, no one stopped me.
In the bike section of the parking lot was my custom Kawasaki Ninja 300 with blue LED light patterns on both sides of the bike and on the wheels, which I had added myself. Grinning, I rushed over to it and practically jumped on it, putting the keys in the ignition and turning it on.
Grinning, I muttered, "Oh, I missed you," before speeding off.
~~~~
"I told you not drive that motorcycle."
I rolled my eyes at Jocelyn , "Hello Joy Bear. Yes, I had a good day at school. How was your day?"
"Good," Jocelyn replied, "Would be better if you listened to me and didn't ride that bike."
"It would also be better if you stopped trying to stop me," I put my bag down on the couch. "Oh and my lab partner is coming over in a couple minutes."
"Wait- what? Maia!" She yelled, clearly pissed off at me for- "You know the rule. No humans in the house."
"I know but I don't care," I replied, speaking slowly, "We have a project to do."
"Maia-" Jocelyn was cut off by me.
"I need to change."
I headed to my room, which was music themed. From the Beatles themed wall to the many instruments around the room, including five guitars, a few violins and many more. My bed was in the furthest corner of the room and was a queen size cushioned daybed. Three of my four walls was dark purple and one of those walls was full of windows. Opposite to the bed was a black L-shaped couch with a black coffee table in front.
I walked into my large walk-in closet and picked out an tan cropped jumper and a pair of white shorts. Grinning, I exited the closet and skipped out of my room, only coming to a halt when I saw a very angry Adria.
"Shit..."
"Maia! What were you thinking?" She yelled as she stomped over to me.
I rolled my eyes, "Okay, I get it, you're mad that I switched out your shaving cream for glue. But I've done worse."
"That doesn't matter right now," she glared at me, "I can't believe you rode your bike when you were specifically told not to."
I sighed and walked past her to the foyer to wait for Kayden, who should be arriving any minute. "Okay, Momma Bear, I don't need a lecture. It ain't gonna get you far."
"Maia-" whatever her reply was, it was cut off by a knock at the door. I gave Adria a look telling her to get lost, before opening the door with a grin.
I leaned against the door slightly, "Hello Kayden."
Kayden had also gone home to change and was now dressed in a white t-shirt and navy shorts with a pair of black shoes. "Hi," he muttered shyly, giving me a small smile, showing his small and what other girls would consider swoon-worthy dimples, before entering once I had moved out of the way.
"My room is this way," I say, grabbing his hand and pulling him in the direction of my room.
"Um- What?" Was his stuttered response as he turns bright red.
"My room," I say slowly, "So we can do our project. The others aren't all home yet... I think... so no food at the moment."
He nodded in reply and I lead him into my room and sat him down on my bed. "I hope you paid attention to what the project is because I sure as hell didn't." He nodded his head and looked around awkwardly. Deciding to tease him a little, I sat next to him with a smirk, leaning in closer, "Or we could work on other chemistry projects. Maybe mix in a bit of biology."
Kayden quickly moved away, nervously and stumbled over words, trying and failing to make a sentence.
Chuckling, I stood back up, "I'm kidding. But, before we work on the project, I need help with something," I paused for a second, "I pulled a prank on Adria this morning and now she is even more pissed off because I rode my bike home even though she told me not to-"
He cut me off, "Because you were almost in a huge accident."
"Does everyone know about that?" Sighing I nodded, "Yeah, so, I think she needs to cool down a little bit." I pulled a bucket out from behind the couch.
"Why do you have a bucket in your room?" Kayden stupidly asked with a confused look.
Furrowing my eyebrows I replied with, "Doesn't everyone?" To which he shook his head, "Anyways, everything else will be set up already, I just need you to put the bucket, which will be full of ice water, on top of the door."
"You're going to drench her in ice water?"
"Oui," I nodded before handing him a camera, "Oh and film it."
"I can see why Rhys says your housemates will kill you," he mutters as he looks over the camera, probably not expecting me to hear.
"He talks to you?"
Kayden looks up in surprise and shakes his head, "Uh- no. I just- overhear him."
"Huh..." I replied with a raised eyebrow before shaking my head, "Okay, let's do this."
~~~~~
"Maia!"
I ran away from the drowned Adria, even jumping over the couch to get away before eventually locking myself in my room, where Kayden had already ran to. Adria banged on the door behind me.
"Maia! Open up!"
"I don't think she cooled down," I chuckled, "Did you get it on video?" He nodded and handed me the camera back so I could look back over the footage. "Awesome."
"Can we work on the project now?"
"Yeah, I'll-"
"Pizza's here!" Damon's voice rang out through the house and I groaned. When did he get home?
"Right after you have eaten food," I said before leading him downstairs to where the others sat. Since Damon was home, it meant that Blair, Trinity-Ann, Devin and the two step-siblings were home too. Sadly.
"Who's this kid?" Devin asked once we walked into the room.
"Kayden. He's my chemistry partner," I replied, before naming everyone for Kayden, who just gave them an awkward smile and wave, not saying a word.
They all sort of looked at each other like 'wtf' before shrugging it off. "Okay, let's just eat," Damon said before opening the pizza boxes.
As they all dug into the food, Kayden gave me a confused look because I didn't touch a single piece of the pizza, "Are you not eating?"
I shrugged, "I'm not hungry." He gave me a look as if he was going to ask if I was sure but I cut him off before he could, "I'm sure. I'm definitely not hungry."
I sat on the couch with the others and Kayden, bored as hell, as they all ate pizza. I was seconds away from jumping on the couch I was that bored. It was just too quiet.
"Let's play truth or dare," I said, breaking the silence.
Adria choked slightly and finished eating the bite she had just taken, "What?"
"Truth or dare," I gave her a look, "It's a game where someone asks-"
"I know what it is," she snapped, rolling her eyes at me.
I smiled, "It'll be a fun way to get to know Kayden. Okay, I'll start."
"Wait, Maia-"
Ignoring her obvious protest, I got up to get a bottle and upon return, I set it down on the ground. When no one moved to join me, I gave them a look, "Well?"
Sighing, one by one, they moved to form a circle around the bottle until it was just Kayden who was awkwardly sat on the couch.
I made space next to me and patted the ground, "Kayden, get over here. It's not like we are doing some satanic ritual."
Still being as awkward as ever, he shuffled his way over and sat next to me. Grinning I spun the bottle and it landed on Adrianna, "Adria, Truth or Dare."
"Maia-" I gave her a look and she sighed, "Fine, Truth."
~~~~
"Kayden, Truth or Dare?" I asked. We had been playing this for an hour or so.
"Um, Truth," he replied, probably because the last dare I gave out to someone included the roof and the pool.
Pursing my lips, I thought for a second before speaking, "If you could have any superpower, what would it be?"
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Adria give me a look but I ignored it. The minute someone mentions superpowers in front of a human, she does this. What she doesn't seem to understand is, quite a lot of humans discuss this.
"Uh," Kayden pauses for a second, biting his bottom lip, "Maybe-um- telekinesis."
"Good choice," I grinned, "I personally, would have chosen Elemental Manip-"
"Kayden, your turn," Adria interrupted giving me the same look, causing me to raise my hands in defense. Geez, it's someone's time of the month.
Kayden spun the bottle causing it to spin a few times before landing on Damon. He nervously shuffled slightly. It was clear he was intimidated by all of us and didn't really enjoy playing this game too much but I love it, so I don't care. He was clearly very socially awkward.
"Truth or Dare?"
"Truth," Damon replied in a slightly bored tone.
"Who's the girl in that photo?" The other's quickly froze up. This was a touchy subject for Damon and Devin, "I-I just haven't seen her here."
Damon's jaw locked and he glared, harshly, at Kayden, "Dare."
"Okay, um-"
"I dare you to answer that question," I replied for him, knowing he would easily succumb to Damon's wrath. I felt like I was the only other one in the room that had no idea who it was as they all turned their glares onto me. I was the last one to arrive at the house and I definitely did not settle in well, so any house secrets were never shared with me and I had to figure out everything I know myself. I'm observant, I know more about most people than they know about themselves.
Examples, Blair, she's distant. People who distance themselves from others don't do it out of hatred, they do it out of fear, whether it's fear that they will hurt them or they themselves will get hurt. Adria is bossy and controlling. This is probably due to not being able to control something else so she buries it by trying to control everything and everyone else. Kayden is, like I said, socially awkward. He has a GPA of 4.8, showing he is clearly, quite smart and smart people can quite often be introverts. However, he also-
Wait, what was I doing?
"-play a different game?" I zoned back into the conversation, halfway through Devin's question. Damon was glaring heavily at Kayden and I so I could tell, like the mediator he is, Devin was trying to keep the peace. Hah, what peace?
I shrugged, "Damon should just answer the question."
"You know what Maia-" Damon got up, glaring at me as he moved over to me. I got up to my feet, if he was gonna hit me, I would be ready to kick his ass in front of our guest.
Kayden quickly jumps in, panicked about the impending fight, "I shouldn't have asked, I let my curiosity get the best of me. Let's just work on the project." Hey look, Devin has competition.
I ignored him and glared back at Damon, "Back the fuck up. Get any closer, I will kick your ass. Again."
Adria gave us warning glares, "Calm down you two."
"How about you back the fuck up and stay out of shit that doesn't concern you?" Damon spat angrily, taking another step closer to me.
"Or what? What are you gonna do? Huh? Nothing. Because you've been domesticated." I gave him a bitchy smirk, "You're all bark and no bite."
I guess he had some bite because he quickly swung at me, except it didn't hit me. Kayden, who had seemed to predict his move, quickly pushed me back and taken the hit himself. That was when Momma Bear finally ended the argument.
"Damon! Out! Now!" Adria glared at him, "Go calm down."
Damon looked like he was about to argue but before he could, my metal fist slammed into his jaw followed by the sound of it breaking and him being knocked down. I don't know what it was, but something inside seemed to snap.
"Maia!" Adria glared at me but I ignored her as I walked closer to where Damon was beginning to stand up, pissed. Before he could do anything, I had him pinned, delivering another solid blow to the gut this time before grabbing his throat, grinning a smile so evil only one other person could master it.
It took me a second to realize what was going on and the smile dropped from my lips but before I could move away, Jocelyn walked in.
Shit.
"What on fuck is going on here?" Jocelyn yelled, "Maia, let him go and step away, now!"
I did as she said and knew exactly what was going to happen next. Intense scolding.
"Damon, go calm down. Maia, come with me. Now."
I glanced at Kayden, who was still knocked out, "But-"
"Now!"
Geez. You'd think I actually killed him.
Sighing, I followed her out of the room into the other living room and then into the office.
She slammed the door behind me, "What the hell was that?"
"Nothing," I lightly shrugged, "He just pissed me off."
"He just pissed you off," Jocelyn replied slowly and full of sarcasm. Something tells me that was not something I should have said, "So you tried to kill him."
"No, if I tried, he would be dead."
"Maia! That's not the point!" She rubbed her temple in annoyance.
"Then I think I'm missing it."
Jocelyn took a deep breath, probably resisting the urge to strangle me, "Maia, we've been over this, you can't just attack people when they anger you."
"Why not?"
"Because that's what got you here in the first place!"
Jocelyn immediately realized the low blow she just served when she saw me suck my bottom lip in anger before putting on a sarcastic, sharp smile. I scoffed, "Wow. What's next, you gonna give me a speech on how you 'saved my life'?"
"Maia-"
"Or maybe a bullshit story about how much you have helped me and I should be grateful?"
Jocelyn looked upset and annoyed by that one, "Maia-"
"You fostered me, knowing full well what I was like. You made that mistake." And with that, I walked out in search of Kayden.
He wasn't that hard to find as he was still in the same room, sat on the couch with an ice pack on his head. Anger spiked in me again when I realized he must have hit his head.
I sat down. "That was incredibly stupid," Raising my eyebrow ever so slightly, I gave him a small smile, "Brave but stupid."
He bit his bottom lip and looked down slightly, choosing to stay silent. My eyes immediately caught sight on the birthmark on the back of his neck. The Triskele.
Furrowing my eyebrows, I shook my head lightly before speaking again, a small smirk working its way onto my lips, "You know, curiosity killed the cat."
Kayden glanced up at me for a split second, "But satisfaction brought it back."
I let out a small chuckle and raised an eyebrow, looking between him and the ice bag, "And were you satisfied?"
"Not in the slightest," he replied with a small smile.
With the close proximity, my eyes landed on his lips for a couple seconds before I ripped my eyes down to his bag. "Why do you never perform your own music?"
I didn't need to look to know that Kayden's face was redder than a baboon's butt. I also know that mine would be if I didn't have powers.
"It's not any good," he muttered in reply.
"Bull shit," I grabbed his bag quickly, and, despite his protests, took out the music he was working on. I head over to my room, hearing him quickly follow behind me with his bag. I took it over to my music stand and guitar, reading the music.
Kayden sat beside me looking conflicted on whether or not to take the music sheet and put it away or not. I began to play the music, adding a few bits here and there to make it sound even better.
Once I had finished the small section he had written, I turned to him with a raised eyebrow, "Like I said, bull shit."
He smiled lightly and somehow his face got redder as he grabbed the music sheets and put them back in his bag as quickly as he could.
"You're pretty good," I smirked before teasingly adding, "For an amateur." I got up to grab my chemistry books to finally actually do the project, "I really hope you were being serious about paying attention in class, because I have absolutely, one hundred percent, no fucking clue what this project is about." Kayden nodded his head slightly and I grinned, "Okay, let's get to work, partner."
