𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿. It wasn't that she didn't know how, because she did know how to swim. It was that her parents had traumatized her so much that once she met the water, she began to panic. When she was four, her parents held her underwater to try and help her get better at breathing underwater. It didn't end up helping and resulted in the girl being terrified of water. She never thought she could get so embarrassed, but the minute her gym teacher informed her that they would be swimming that week for gym, she instantly knew the embarrassment was to come. Arabella never really had friends leading up to that week, but then two blonde-haired teens jumped in to help the panicking girl as everyone else laughed along the sidelines. Even the gym teacher was laughing at her, which resulted in her being fired the very next week.
Arabella still hadn't gotten over her fear of the water, and that awful day had happened two years prior in her freshman year. You would think she would have gotten over it by now but she didn't. That's the main reason why she struggled so much when she fell into the center of the moon pool that evening, scaring both Ris and Kai. She wailed her arms around as she sunk under the deep water, the robust pool current pushing her under the bright blue water. The girl's eyes widened as they made eye contact, not knowing what to do. If Kai's grandmother found out, it wouldn't end well for either of them. If she didn't find out, she would eventually, and that scared the girls the most. They hated the women with a passion but never did anything about it. Taking a deep breath, the blonde-haired girl dove under the water and swam down to grab the now-sinking girl. Bella had lost her breath a few seconds earlier and was now dozing off due to a lack of oxygen.
Nerissa swam down and grabbed a hold of Bella's shirt, swimming the two girls back up to the surface of the pool. The pool didn't look that deep to those outside of it, but once you got in it and looked down, you could see that it was profound. It was usually helpful but in this case, it could have been more helpful. Bella wasn't as heavy as Ris expected her to be and that genuinely concerned her. She was almost as light as a feather and for someone Bella's height, she shouldn't be that small. Ris pushed the concern for the girl to the back of her mind as she pushed herself above the water, pushing Bella onto the edge of the pool. Kai helped pull Ris onto the edge of the pool before backing away, letting Ris help the other blonde-haired girl.
"She isn't breathing," Ris told Kai before she started compressing the small girl, leaving Kai to use her abilities to dry the girl as fast as she could. The two girls couldn't let the random blonde figure out who they were. What they are.
Nerissa didn't even know if she was doing the compressions correctly, but at that moment, that wasn't her main focus. She pressed down on the girl's chest once more before she pinched the girl's nose, and placed her mouth on Bella's. Ris blew air into Bella's mouth two times before she pulled back, going back to compressions. Although before she could get back to compressions, Bella was opening her eyes and choking up the water that was in her lungs. Kai leaned forward and examined the girl in front of her, not recognizing her from where she stood. She had light tan skin, probably from being out in the sun during winter break. The girl's blonde hair was soaking to her back but it still had a natural shine to it. The most unique thing about her though was her eyes. They were almost sapphire aqua blue and filled with tears as she coughed the moon pool water out of her lungs. Kai was pulled away from her examining when Bella quickly pushed herself away from the other two girls, her eyes widening in panic.
"Woah, it's okay, your okay," Nerissa gave the girl a comforting smile as she reached forward to try and calm the girl down
"Wha- you are not real," Bella's mouth hung open in disbelief as she closed her eyes tightly and crossed her fingers, hoping that the things she saw would be gone when she reopened them
"um, what is she doing?" Kai whispered into Ris' ear, concern for the soaking wet blonde written on her face
"This is all a dream...this is just a dream," Bella mumbled to herself as she continued to keep her eyes tightly shut
"I'm not sure," Ris whispered back to Kai as she watched Kai slowly move toward the girl, wanting to help dry her off
"Don't touch me with your wrinkly hands," Bella told the girl as she opened one of her eyes slightly, showing her bright blue eyes
"My hands aren't..." Kai defended before she was cut off by another voice
"Are you okay? That was a long drop," Ris asked, concern evident in her voice as she placed a hand on Bella's shoulder
"I'm fine," the girl said as she pushed herself up from the wet and cold ground, her tone different from how it was seconds before
"Where are we anyway," Bella added as she looked around the underground cave
That was the one question the two girls did not want her asking. It wasn't that they didn't want her to know where she was. It was that if Amatheia strand found out about a human falling into the center, the two girls would be six feet under by the time they walked into her home that evening. A human hadn't fallen into the center since the 19th century, so it was self-explanatory why the girls would be in trouble if the older woman found out. Ris slowly turned her head to look at Kai, instantly seeing the panicked expression on her face. Amatheia Strand scared the two girls more than anything else in the supernatural universe and that was saying a lot.
"It's an underground cave, called the center," Kai's voice shook as she spoke, evident fear and panic in it as she informed the girl of where she had been turned into one of them.
"So this is where you come to cosplay as mermaids?" Bella asked, a new look of concern written on her face as she slowly backed away
"Cosplay? You thought our tails were fake?" Kai said as her mouth hung open in offense, she had never been told by someone that her tail looked fake and it offended her that a human of all people would think something like that
"Yeah, I mean it was fake," Bella was now looking at the girls in horror, scared that what she thought was a dream isn't a dream
"It was fake, wasn't it?" she added, horror still filling her as she took small steps away from the girls
The two girls shook their heads slowly as they watched the girl's blue eyes widen once again. They couldn't blame her for being scared, considering that they once were also scared and they had been born with a tail. Bella slowly reached into her back pocket to grab her phone as she continued to back away from the girls, although she couldn't do anything with her phone as it was soaking wet and dead. She let out a small curse as she tried to think of another way to get away from the so-called mermaids. Bella knew that running wasn't a smart plan but it was the only thing she knew how to do well. Bella Caspiean was a runner, she ran from her problems and that was evident as she took off out of the cave, leaving Nerissa and Kailani alone in the cave.
"That was Arabella Caspiean, she's in my 3rd-period English class," Ris told her friend as they starred at where the girl had been standing just seconds before, panic filling both of them as their thoughts began to fill with the consequences they would have to face.

Working at Beacon Hills Animal Clinic with Scott Mccall was not how Emilia imagined spending her sophomore year. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy working there, she enjoyed being with animals and helping them, but working with Scott Mccall after their history hurt her more than she had ever thought was possible. Day after day she was forced to help him take care of the animals that were a part of the clinic and shelter. Scott had tried to talk to the girl multiple times since she started the job just a few months prior, but Mila had walked away every single time. Scott hasn't tried to talk to Mila since before Christmas break, which ended just a few days prior.
January nights at the clinic often went the same. Scott and Mila would arrive for their shift around 4 and wouldn't leave until around 10 or 11, depending on whether they had homework. They help feed the animals at the shelter and help take care of any appointments, which end around 7 on most nights. Sometimes they'll have an emergency appointment or someone rush in looking for help, which tends to freak both Scott and Mila out. They had a talent when it came to controlling animals, but they never truly took care of the animals in an emergency case.
Mila tended to get distracted incredibly easily while at work. She always tried to listen to music to help her focus more but it never actually helped because the majority of the time she ended up jamming out to her playlist. Deaton always told her that it was okay if she got distracted, knowing he used to be the same way, but she still felt bad every single time. This was the first shift in a while where Mila didn't get lost in her music and was able to get a lot done in both the clinic and animal shelter.
"Mila" the sudden voice behind her made her flinch and turn around, ready to attack if needed.
"Woah woah, I was just going to ask if it was okay for me to head home or if you want me to stay and help?" Scott wore a confused look as he gripped his backpack strap tighter to make sure it didn't fall
"Uh sorry, yeah that's fine," she said what she wanted to say before turning her focus back to feeding the animals in the clinic. She wasn't going to let Scott have her attention after everything that happened.
"Okay, um bye Mila," he gave her a small smile and wave before spinning on his heel and walking off, only noticing the crying and soaking-wet girl once he got to the door.
"I didn't see it. I took my eyes off the road for like, two seconds to change the song on my iPod, and then this dog, it just came out of nowhere!" the girl sobbed as she panicked, concerned for the dog and the dog only
"It's all right, it's all right, it's all right. Do you remember where it happened so I can send animal control to find it?" The boy asked the flustered girl, although a confused look appeared on his face when she started shaking her head
"No! I mean, yes, I know where I hit it, but the dog is-" She tried saying before Scott cut her off, "where is it"
"It's in my car," she informed as she turned and rushed back to her car, Scott following behind her as she popped the trunk, which alerted the blonde-haired girl, who was still inside the animal clinic. As they popped the trunk, the dog started barking at the pair of teens, causing the soaking-wet girl to jump back into Scott's arms.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, knowing she was scared by the way she was trembling in his arms. She nodded and Scott started talking again, "she's just frightened,"
"That makes two of us," she laughed softly before she grabbed onto Scott's hand again
"Let me see if I have any better luck," Scott told her before he slowly moved forward toward the car, but the dog just continued to bark
Scott got up closer to where the dog was before he bent his head down just slightly, hiding his face from the girl's view. He took a deep breath before he opened his eyes, allowing the yellow glow to shine through and tame the dog in front of him. The dog let out small whimpers as it calmed down and became less tense. Scott stepped back away from the dog and looked up towards the clinic, where he made eye contact with Mila. She didn't look scared like he thought she would. It looked like she almost felt pity for him like she knew what was happening and didn't want him to go through that. Scott shook the thought away as he reached down and picked up the dog, carrying it inside to safety.
"Scott goes ahead and head home, I'll handle this and call Deaton," Mila gave him a small smile as she started to examine the dog in front of her. She still didn't care for the boy like she used to but seeing his eyes glowing gave her a different view on everything. Scott would need all of the help he can get with what's happening to him.
"Yeah okay, see you guys at school," Scott awkwardly smiled before rushing off
"By looking at her, I think her leg's broken. I should be able to do a splint, I've seen the doctor do it plenty of times. It's a major blessing that it's just her leg and nothing internal," Mila informed as she slowly petted the dog laying on the table. She could tell though that the girl was still panicking, even though it was just a broken leg.
"Allison, the dog is going to be okay. We'll find her owners," Mila added, turning her attention from the dog to the dark-haired girl.
"I can do the splint and then give her a painkiller to settle down," Mila said after a few seconds of silence. She was starting to think Allison wasn't a big talker since she hadn't said a word since Scott left
"Yeah...okay" Allison smiled before shivering slightly, cold from the wet clothes tight against her body
"I have a shirt in my locker, if you need one" Mila said, her voice a little more nervous than it was just a few minutes before.
"Oh, I don't want to trouble you," Allison said as she shook her head and hands.
"It's no trouble, plus we're friends now and friends share clothes," Mila smiled as she walked over to her locker, opening it up and grabbing the long-sleeved shirt that lay inside.
"I can tell those words came from Lydia," Allison laughed knowing that was something Lydia would say
"That obvious?" Mila turned her head to the side slightly as she talked
"Very, she asked me earlier if she could come over and go through my closet because she wanted to borrow a few things," Allison replied while laughing, happy to be friends with someone other than Lydia
"That's Lydia, and just so you know, she is a nice girl. She just got on my nerves earlier and that's why I lost it on her at the lacrosse tryouts," Mila explained, hoping Allison didn't think Lydia was a bad person for what happened earlier that day
"Yeah, I know," Allison gave a small smile before she walked away, heading to the other room to change
Mila felt her eyes follow Allison as she left the room, watching her as she slowly pulled her shirt over her head. She didn't know why she was looking if she was being honest, she knew it was rude to look at someone else while they were changing but she couldn't pull her eyes away. Mila only turned her head away when she felt the dog's eyes on her.
"Don't look at me like that," she glared at the dog as she turned her head away from both Allison and the dog
"Thanks for doing this, I feel really stupid" Allison admitted as she played with the sleeve of her shirt
"How come?" Mila found herself asking as she looked up at Ali with a smile on her face
"I don't know, cause I freaked out like a total girl," Allison replied, knowing it was stupid of her to cry over something like that when there were more important things going on in the world
"Don't feel stupid for reacting like that, it's a completely normal way to respond to that situation," Mila didn't know if her words were comforting Ali but she could wish that they did.
"I freaked out like a girly girl, and I'm not a girly girl," Allison smiled as she looked at Mila
'I'm not a girly girl and I know if I had been in the same situation as you, I would be freaking out more than you had tonight. You did great in this type of situation Ali, you helped save this dog's life by getting it here," Mila told Ali as she placed her hand on top of hers, hoping it would calm her down more
"If it makes you feel better, it looks like she's going to live," Mila laughed as she petted the broken-legged dog
"You could probably pet her too if you wanted," Mila made sure to add as she looked up at Allison
"I don't think so," Allison responded in a raspy tired voice, shaking her head at the thought of petting the dog
"Oh, come on, you don't want her to get upset, do you? This breed tends to get upset easily," Mila lied as she tried to get her friend to laugh and pet the dog. It would make her feel better in the end. A smile appeared on Mila's face as Allison started to pet the dog
"See, she loves you," Mila smiled as she joined in on petting the injured dog, although her eyes remained on Allison
"What?" Allison asked, curious about why the girl had been staring at her, although she would be lying if she said she didn't enjoy having the girls focus
"Oh sorry, you have an eyelash on your cheek," Mila apologized as she reached forward, placing her small soft hand against Allison's cheek, wiping her thumb across it as she grabbed the eyelash for her
"Here make a wish," Mila smiled softly as she placed the eyelash on her finger, allowing Ali to blow it off while making her wish
"What'd you wish for?" Mila asked after a few seconds, although she already knew she wouldn't get an answer
"If I told you it wouldn't be much of a wish," she smiled before she added, "It's getting late, I should probably go,"
"Yeah okay, I'll walk you out," Mila was saddened to have her new friend leave but she understood why she had to go
"Hey, I was wondering...is it family night on Friday, or do you think maybe you'd like to go to the party with me? As friends of course," Mila asked out of curiosity, knowing her only real friends there would be Ris and maybe a few others.
"Family night was a total lie," Allison smiled as she tilted her head to the side ever so slightly, smiling at the thought of hanging out with Mila again
"So is that a yes?" Mila voice was silvery as she asked
"Definitely yes," Allison smiled as she smiled at Mila one more time as she got into her car
Mila smiled brightly and took a few steps back from the car, allowing Allison to drive away. Mila quickly turned around once Allison was gone, heading back into the Animal Clinic. She would be lying if she said that she didn't enjoy hanging out with Allison that night.

If there was one thing Beacon Hills loved most, it was be lacrosse. Eli never did understand why the sport was so popular in California, but that didn't stop Eli from playing the sport. He spent every chance he got practicing with one of his only friends on the team, Gio Ramirez. The two were two of the best, if not the best, players on the team. Jackson always liked to say he was the best on the team, but he couldn't even beat mccall, which is saying a lot.
"What's going on with me? You really wanna know? Well, so would I because I can see, hear, and smell things that I shouldn't be able to see, hear, and smell. I do things that should be impossible! I'm sleepwalking three miles into the middle of the woods, and I'm pretty much convinced that I'm totally out of my freaking mind!" Scott's loud voice was the only thing Eli could hear as he turned around the corner, finding Jackson shoving Scott up against a locker.
The words that were leaving Scott's mouth truly terrified Eli. He started replaying the last few days in his head and instantly realized that the night after a body was discovered in the woods was when Scott Mcall started acting differently. Acting like he could hear things from outside the school, much like Mila is able to. If what Scott was saying was truly happening to him, the town of beacon hills would be in a lot more danger than it already is.
"Hey Jackass, leave him alone" Eli called out as he walked down the hall, getting closer to the locker where Jackson and Scott stood
Jackson rolled his eyes at the brunette haired boy walking towards him before placing Scott back on the ground and walking off. Scott leaned his head back against the locker as he let out a few shaky breaths. Once Eli was standing right next to him, he looked up and the two boys made eye-contact. Although it only lasted a few seconds, Eli breaking it as he looked away.
"Thanks," Scott mumbled out, his voice still a bit shaky from the face to face conflict he had moments before
"Yeah, hurry up and get to the field Mccall," Eli couldn't hold back the smile that was trying to appear on his face, he actually enjoyed being able to control and tell people what to do when it came to lacrosse
Scott ran off towards the field and Eli followed behind him, making sure Jackson couldn't grab him again. He knew what it was like to not fully understand what was happening to you when you were first transitioning and if what scott said was true, he would soon have to face the brunt of everything happening to him, alone. Eli knew he should help him if he truly was turning but he couldn't bring himself to. He cared too much for Scott when they were younger and Scott didn't care enough for him to keep him safe. To protect him from the dangers that surrounded them. Scott Mcall hurt Eli Forbes more than anyone ever could. The sound of Coach's whistle brought Eli back to reality as he ran onto the field. He looked around and took notice of the players at the tryouts. Scott stood off to the side, away from Stiles, who wore a panicked expression. Gio was standing by Jackson, but Eli knew Gio would soon merge over beside him.
"Let's go! Gather Round! Bring it in, come on!" Coach yelled as a few last players ran over to join the large group of boys
"Got a question, Mccall?" Coach Finstock asked after Scott raised his hand, waving over at Allison, who was waving at Mila instead
"What?" Scotts normal confused tone asked as he turned to face coach
"You raised your hand, do you have a question?" Coach replied, already getting slightly annoyed
"Oh...no, I was just, uh... nothing sorry," Scott answered, getting a few people to laugh at him in the process.
"Okay, you know how this goes, if you don't make the cut, you're most likely sitting on the bench for most of the season. You make the cut, you play. Your parents are proud, your girlfriend loves ya! Huh! Everything else is, uh...cream cheese. Now, get out there and show me whatcha got," Coach gave his yearly peptalk before the team split up and ran out to the field
Eli watched as Scott tried and tried again to score a goal, getting knocked down every single time. Eli could sense the anger forming from Scott as he faced off against jackson. Eli stood midfield as he watched Scott take off with the ball, beating Jackson in the face off. He wanted to cheer for the newly talented boy but decided not to, knowing he would be upset with himself later had he cheered for someone who hurt him and his little sister so badly. Scott continued to run down the field, surprising everyone watching the tryouts. The field erupted in applause as Scott scored a goal. Eli was impressed by Scott's improvement but he had a feeling the boy was using his abilities as a wolf, if he was one, to get better at the sport. Everyone on the team, excluding Jackson, went to congratulate Scott on his success.
"Mccall! Get over here!" Coach yelled, causing Scott to run over
"What in God's name was that? This is a lacrosse field. What are you trying out for the gymnastics team?" He added, his annoyance and voice getting louder with each word
"No, Coach" Scott answered in a breathy voice, still catching his breathe from the running he just did
"What the hell was that?" Coach asked again, this time his voice quieter and more calmed down
"I dont know, I- just trying to make the shot," Scott repliedin a more collected tone than before
"Yeah, well, you made the shot and guess what? You're startin', buddy, you made first line" Coach informed the boy, a small smile appearing on his face at the sight of the young teen in front of him, a shocked expression on his face
"Come on!" Coach yelled as Scott started smiling and the crowd started cheering even more.
Eli turned away from his teammates and looked over at Scott and the crowd. He saw his sister cheering along with Allison argent, not realizing allison argent was an actual argent. He saw his dad cheering for the team. He saw scott take in the moment. He saw how panicked Stiles was as he sat on the bench, surrounded by his cheering teammates. Eli shook his head to try and clear his senses before he started cheering for the mccall boy. He didn't exactly want to cheer for scott but he also didn't want to look like a bad teammate, so he cheered and watched as a bright smile appeared on Scotts face as the two boys made eye contact again for the second time that day.

Nerissa Fontaine was used to helping people, that's just something she was good at doing. Growing up, her mom always told her that it was better to help people than to sit around and watch them suffer. That's why she fights so hard when it comes to Issac Lahey. Issac would often show up at school covered in bruises or scars, and while Issac thought he wasn't noticed, Ris was watching him everyday. She saw him come to school with a slight limp quite often and that's when she worry started. She watched as he got quieter and quieter as time passed. She watched as the happy sunshine Issac Lahey turned into a dark raincloud. If she had enough courage, she would probably go to the police with a complaint, but she didn't. She couldn't. So instead, she was his escape.
Whenever issac had a problem or needed help, he would show up at Nerissa's doorstep. She would help him with his schoolwork and wait for him to get ready to talk about what happened. Sometimes it would take hours and sometimes it wouldn't, but it didn't matter, Ris still sat there and waited for him because she was secretly wishing someone would do the same for her.
"Ris? Are you okay?" Issac's quiet voice broke Ris out of her thoughts, bringing her back to reality. She was still at school and was studying with Issac in the library.
"Yeah sorry, I'm just tired," Ris said as she rubbed her dry eyes. After the events the night before, she hadn't been able to sleep. She was worried for not only bella, but the mermaid community. Bella was a complete stranger to both of the girls so they truly had no idea if their secret was safe or not
"Want to talk about it?" he asked, although he already knew what her answer would be
"No, I'm okay, really" She put a smile on her face as she turned back to her notebook and started to flip through the colorful note pages
"I think we should work on chemistry again today since we both struggled with the test last week," Ris changed the subject quickly, knowing Issac wanted to check on her and she could not handle talking about her issues at that moment
"Yeah okay," he smiled before he reached down into his bag and grabbed a bag of lollipops, handing them to the girl sitting across from him
"My dad...he um...got me a bag of those on his last work trip but it was mostly blue raspberry, which I know you like so I decided to save them for you," He smiled at the way her eyes brightened and how her smile went from eye to eye
"Really? You can have them, I really don't need them," She excused, trying to hide the happiness in her voice at how thoughtful he was
"I'm positive, I want you to have them," Issac told her as he pushed the bag into her hands but as he did so, she was pulling him into a tight hug. Her arms wrapped around his neck and his arms slowly fell onto her waist, the height difference evident.
"Thank you for everything," she whispered into his ear as the two just sat in each others arms for a few more minutes, large smiles on both of their faces
"I- I didn't do anything though, I should be thanking you," He said as he pulled back from the leg so he could look into her bright blue eyes
"You may not see it, but you've helped me so much Issac and I'll never not remind you of how much you mean to me as a friend," She told him as she looked up into his blue eyes
"You've saved me too" he told her as he grabbed her hand, rubbing his thumb across her palm
"Would you want to go to the party with me on Friday?" she asked suddenly, causing him to back away from how sudden it was
"What" he said in a confused tone, never knowing Ris to be that straightforward
"Um...the party is on friday and I'm kind of being forced to go with Lydia and Jackass, sorry Jackson, and I really don't want to be a third wheel so I was wondering if you would want to go with me? It doesn't have to be a date if you don't want it to be or it can be, really whatever you want. You can always say no too-" Ris rambled all in one breath as she looked into his panicked blue eyes, her own eyes resembling his
"Shh, of course I'll go, I'd do anything for you," he smiled as he watched her eyes return to their normal calmness, even though they still had a gleam in them from how happy she was at his answer
"Really?" she asked, not knowing if he was just saying yes out of pity for her
"Really" he smiled as he pulled her back into a hug, the two teens completely oblivious to the blonde haired boy standing outside the door leading into the library
If you told Nerissa Fontaine at the beginning of her sophomore year that she would be going to a party with Issac Lahey, she would have told you that you were crazy. Now she would have believed you in an instant.
