37. Fate's A Bitch

[Author's Note: If you see this, it means I have put link to music that helps me into mood as I write this chapter. Feel free to listen to them as you read on. Let me know what you think! Happy Reading]

Life sucked.

You know why I said that? Because I was being truthful when I told my friends that I wasn't gonna get into any trouble; yet fate proved to be a bitch.

That night I saw another vision as I was deep in slumber.

The riders of Rohan was lining up towards Minas Tirith, facing thousands of incoming orcs and men rallied by Saruman. The sound of battle cries boomed as the war horn was blown, signaling the beginning of war.

The riders of Rohan came swiftly, sweeping thousands of foes; they got the advantage since Rohan armies were all on horses while the orcs were on foot.

We were winning. The armies of orcs sent fleeing for their lives in confusion and fear. Rohan fought vigorously.

Then about two dozen of Oliphaunts, a kind of monstrous version of mammoths came marching into the battlefield, their riders sounding the war horn. They came proudly as they marched on to confront the riders of Rohan, who reformed their line under their king's order, readying themselves to face their giants.

The Oliphaunts' giant trunks hit the ground and squashed everything in their paths, all of them were riders of Rohan and their horses, who were nothing but bugs in their eyes.

The eagle's eyes zoomed in to see closer to the ground. I saw Merry and Eowyn fell from their horse. They were sent flying to the ground. Eowyn was screaming Merry's name, yet the hobbit was nowhere to be found.

Merry slowly opened his eyes and got up. He fought hard. Then when he was fighting an enemy whose half of his face was covered by a red fabric, a horse was sent flying towards him as it was being kicked by the giant Oliphaunt's feet. The horse hit Merry and sent him flying to the ground.

The sound of Merry's scream alerted Eowyn as she thrusts her sword into an enemy's gut. She ran for Merry, and got to his side.

"My leg is pinned," said Merry in pain, half of his body was pinned underneath the dead stallion's body.

"On my count," she replied hastily, "When I push, use all your might to get your feet off of the horse!"

Eowyn turned her back and killed an incoming orc then crouched back down to push the stallion's body away from Merry's.

Merry struggled and eventually got out, but as he stood his eyes widened in horror as he exclaimed in warning to Eowyn at an incoming foe– but it was too late.

A sword impaled Eowyn's body as she turned to raise her sword at her attacker. A piercing scream escaped Merry's lips as Eowyn fell to the ground. Her expression blanked and her pupils dilated.

The scene changed.

I saw the Ringwraith riding a Nazgul, the dark, dragon-like creature, facing Theoden King, whose body was pinned under his own horse.

"Feast on his flesh," said the faceless Ringwraiths in cold, dark, horrible voice to his dragon. There was no one to save the king; no one to defeat the Nazgul and its rider. The evil creature roared before it dipped its razor-like teeth on the fallen king of Rohan. Blood sputtered from his neck as it snapped with a crack and the king's head rolled off the ground.

Now Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas were facing the Ringwraiths. They fought bravely, yet none of them could beat it. Gimli planted an axe on the Ringwraith, and an agonized scream fled the dwarf's lips at the contact. He held his arm in his hand.

"Gimli!" Legolas exclaimed as he shot arrows after arrows. Aragorn was clashing swords with the Ringwraith, but soon his strength failed him and he fell to the ground. The Ringwraith let out an evil laugh.

"The heir of Isildur. Do you not know that men cannot kill me? Now your death shall mark the end of Men. The time for Sauron to reign has come," he declared in a dark voice and raised his blade. Legolas intercepted it and gave enough time for Aragorn to get back up. Together they fought with all their might.

The scene changed. I was seeing through someone's eyes. I opened my hazy eyes to the night sky, where the fiery orange light flared in the east. Mordor.

Death was all around me, its smell thick in the air. I saw Aragorn and Gimli's bodies sprawled on the ground, along with others, cold and unmoving. I tried to reach them yet I couldn't. My hand was holding my bloodied chest where a blade was sticking out of it.

My body was giving up and I swallowed, tasting salty and rusty liquid on my mouth. My breathing ragged and tears fell from my eyes.

I have failed.

Cold and darkness started to overcome me, and in a croaked voice, my last words escaped my lips as I breathed my last.

"Goheno nin (Forgive me)," I said in my mother tongue as I felt liquid trickled dowb my cheek from my lips, blood was started to choke me, "...Leane..."

***

I awoke with a start, gasping for air. Tears flowed as I wept. My body shook violently.

Someone hugged me as I cried uncontrollably. A pain that wasn't physical was twisted my heart in the most painful way possible.

"Shhh...." cooed Eowyn, "It is only a nightmare, Leane."

Eowyn's soft eyes were looking at my teary ones as she spoke, "I'm sure Legolas will be alright, along with the others."

I sniffed as I asked in a croaked voice, "H-how do you know–?"

Eowyn smiled, but her eyes saddened. "You screamed his name in your sleep. I woke you up."

My mind was racing. Something really really bad was going to happen to my friends, to Eowyn. To my Legolas.

My Legolas.

I cried again as fear and sorrow washed over me. I should've not let him go. I should've not letting him away from my side. Who could win against such evil times like this?

"Eowyn..." I croaked in teary eyes, "I'm scared."

My body began shaking again as she hugged me tightly.

"Me too, Leane. Me too," she replied. "Do you want me to stay with you tonight?"

***

Shit.

I couldn't believe I got here again. I couldn't believe my luck–or lack thereof. Sneaking into war on my own. Again. I sat straight on Bella, my horse, and soon my mind traveled to the one who gave her to me.

My Legolas.

My heart constricted painfully at the vision I had about him last night. I couldn't bear the thought of him dying. I didn't care if I die in the process but I sure as hell will try to save the only person I love more than anything else. He was the only thing I've got, he was my sunshine. If he die, then I got nobody, I got nothing, and I will be as good as dead.

I shook the thought away as I angrily wiped the tear from my face. I focused my eyes on Eowyn and Merry. This time I went into war with no preparation, no plan, unlike the last time in Helm's Deep. I had no layout of the ground of battle to get familiar with, no hiding spot. I had to be in it, keeping myself, Merry and Eowyn alive.

I was tempted to tell Eowyn that I was going to go into war as well, yet I knew better; she being aware that I will be around might as well change the course of fate for worse. So I kept to myself, following her and Merry from a safe distance.

I managed to steal some war equipment during nighttime just after Eowyn fell asleep beside me and slipped away with Bella early in the morning into the crowd of men as they rode for Minas Tirith. Took me some time to locate the duo between the other men and horses. And after I got them, I stick to riding behind a rider behind them.

The war horn of Rohan sounded and the only thing that I could think of was this: Kill as many as I can and stay alive.

I breathed in and out, mustering my resolve and boldness, holding on to the thoughts of saving Legolas. It became my anchor.

I yelled the battle cry along with the men of Rohan and off we galloped to face the enemy.

Bella's hooves stepped on many orcs as I fired my arrows to any enemy within my range. Adrenaline pulsed through my veins and everything became sharper. My movement was fluid as instinct of survival overtook me. My mind was in sync with my gift, scanning any hostile intention around me as well as tuning my mind into Merry and Eowyn's emotions.

The orcs started to scatter around us; they fled to every direction in fear and confusion. I saw hope in the eyes of every Rohan men I encountered; yet I knew the battle was far from over.

Big– scratch that, big didn't do them any justice– monstrous, enormous, gigantic herd of monsters in the shape of a mammoth came striding at us, their riders yelled proudly in battle cry.

The damnest things, Oliphaunts.

"Reform the line!" exclaimed Theoden King.

I went along with other riders to form a line, yet I lost Merry and Eowyn in the process. I cursed inwardly as I focused on the sea of troubling emotions to locate both Merry and Eowyn.

Just as I found them the riders began to gallop and I urged Bella to run with the others, bit by bit making my way to Merry and Eowyn as we passed through the Oliphaunts massive feet. I had to look away as I saw their feet crunched horses and their riders.

I couldn't help but think about how this was what Dr. Alan Grant felt when he ran for his life as the mutant dinosaur in Jurassic Park tried to eat him. Holy shit.

I forced my way through the enemies, shooting my arrows as I got closer and closer to Eowyn and Merry.

Then both of the fell from their horse.

"Merry!" exclaimed Eowyn as she frantically moved her head to search for the hobbit. Soon she was distracted fighting men that came with one of the Oliphaunt.

I located Merry and saw him starting to get up. I galloped to his direction, shooting my arrows to incoming enemies. I went to take more arrow when I ran out.

"Shit!" I cursed loudly.

I drew my sword and clashed it to my opponents that were on my way. As I got closer I saw Merry fighting bravely against his enemy.

Then I got a good look on Merry's opponent. The man wasn't wearing black fabric as the rest of his friends, he was wearing red fabric that covered his mouth and nose.

That was my cue. I rode hard towards Merry and dismounted Bella, running the rest of the distance with my feet.

Men and horses were flying above me and I memorized the plan I had in my mind: Push Merry out of the way before the horse in my vision hit him. Save Merry, save EowynEowyn gets to kill the Ringwraith.

Something big and hard hit me from the back and I was on the ground, air was knocked out of me as I groaned in pain. A man's limp body was pinning me down and I had to push him away from me.

Once I was free I stood to see that Merry was getting further than before. In the distance on my right I saw an Oliphaunt getting closer. Then a blade clashed with mine, and I got distracted fighting a masked man. I dodged and stabbed him in the gut; staring into his eyes as my blade drained life out of him.

All this time I'd killed, I always killed orcs, but never man in close range. The look in his eyes as he breathed his last was burned in my mind. A thought occured to me. He might happen to be in the wrong side of war, but he was also a human being. He might have a wife or children somewhere waiting for him to come back. If not, family or friends. It would surely haunt me forever.

I suppressed the guilt from my mind as adrenaline rushed in my veins.

Back to Merry. Save my friends.

There was no way I have the time to reach and save Merry.

Now he was way too far from me and the Oliphaunt was way too close to him. I raked my brain.

Think. Think.

There was no way that I had this prophecy and this Ring with me just to show me in the end that I will fail to save the fate I knew should take place. There must be something I could do.

The Ring. My bloody superpower!

My eyes searched the battlefield; looking for any sign of plants and yes, I found them.

All this time I trained myself to tune into plants I always had direct contact with them. But given the circumstances, there had no way for me to run there and touch the tree. I had to improvise.

The tree planted to the ground, the ground connected beneath my feet.

Instinctively I crouched and put my palm on the ground; tuning in for the tree on the distance and I found it.

I willed my fea to reach out to it and be one with the tree. I pictured in my mind how its root grow bigger and expands further towards Merry in incredible speed.

The earth began to shake as I felt the tree expanded its roots. It sprung up from the ground in front of Merry, bend itself and propel Merry forcefully into the air, just in time to get him away from the horse that supposedly hit him because of the Oliphaunts. The flying horse hit Merry's opponent instead. My mouth gaped open at the sight.

It worked. My magic is effing working!

Merry's eyes widened as he scanned his surroundings and found mine. His jaw fell, realizing that I was around and that I just did the whole tree root stunt on him.

"Sorry I had to do that!" I shouted at Merry who was still gaping at me.

"Leane?! What are you doing here?!" Merry shouted from afar in alarm and shock.

"Saving your life! Now focus on yourself and stay alive! Don't worry about me!!" I exclaimed as I stabbed an orc and whistled for Bella. My horse neighed and galloped towards me.

"Focus!" I shouted at Merry who still looked stunned as I mounted Bella. It stunned Merry back into the battle.

"Good girl, Bella," I said to my horse, patting her head as I settled on the saddle.

I kept on fighting the enemies as my spirit was lifting up. I had saved Merry, it meant keeping Eowyn alive. Eowyn would kill the Ringwraith along with Merry, saving my friends. I refused to think of the other consequences.

Despite the little victory in my mind, these Oliphaunts were slaughtering many of us. We were losing. I kept my eyes on Merry and Eowyn that was standing and fought not so far from each other.

Two Oliphaunts were coming to their direction from both sides, unstoppable. I cursed under my breath.

Why the hell this part of fate wasn't shown to me in my vision?!

I had no time to argue with myself or whoever author that conjured this sick fate. If those Oliphaunts got any closer to my friends, they would positively turn into mashed potato.

I dismounted Bella again and crouched, my palm on the ground and I focused.

The earth shook again and I became one with the tree on the field. It expanded its roots and formed a block on one of the closest Oliphaunt's path. It tripped the monster, causing it to stumble, its many riders falling to the ground. Some being squashed under the monster's body, some were met with our blade.

My body was pushed by a men who attacked me from the side; my focus changed as I blocked his blade, just inches away from my face. I could see from my peripheral vision that the root I build was retracting back into the ground as I became disconnected from the tree.

My opponent dropped dead in a sudden in front of me and Eomer came into my view, his eyes wide in shock as he pulled out his blade from my opponent's chest roughly.

"Keep doing whatever you were doing! It's working! I'll watch your back!" he exclaimed as he kicked and thrust his sword to more opponents. I wasted no time and went back crouching on the ground, focusing my fea to reach for the nearest tree.

Hell yes it was working.

[Author's Note: This entire book was written about three years ago, but upon reading it again, I just realized that Leane acted as a mage/wizard in the whole battle scene. It reminds me a lot of that 5v5 mobile games that often included characters like Fighter, Assassin, Tank, Support, Marksman and Mage. It's awesome. Let me know what you think of Leane's new ability and tell me in the comments below. Also let me know if you have any 5v5 mobile games that you love. Mine is all the way Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Love y'all, precioussss ♥️]
