24. The Messenger

I spent many of my spare time looking out in the distance from where the entrance of Edoras was.

One day, Legolas, who was relieved from duty approached me from behind silently. By this time, my head was clear and my senses of the other's emotions was heightened. I could feel Legolas' calm emotions like a pleasant ocean in the breeze of a sunny day. I smiled.

"Didn't I tell you not to sneak around behind people?" I said without turning my back to him.

Legolas stood beside me and regarded me with a surprised look.

"How do you know I was coming? I was sure I didn't make a sound."

"I sense your emotion."

"Aye, I understand your gift, but it still does not explain how you know that it was me. It could be anyone," he said, taking my hand in his.

"Imagine emotions like voices as if you can hear them. Mostly normal emotions feel like soft whispers, mutters, while the strong ones was like shouts, thundering exclamations," I explained as best as I could. "Yours right now," I said, looking up to his beautiful eyes, smiling, "...it whispers to me like... the sound of the sea."

"The sound of the sea," he repeated. He smiled serenely and kissed my temple.

"Emotions like sounds, can be distinguished from one another, especially if I'm already familiar with it."

"You are a fascinating creature, melleth nin," he said rubbing my cheek. I blushed lightly and opted to look away to the distance again.

"You made me sound like a unicorn," I mumbled, smiling.

"I'm afraid I don't understand that reference."

"It's a mythical white horse with a single horn on its head. You don't have one of those in here?"

That silly question elicited a chuckle from the handsome elf, his eyes dancing with mirth. "I do not believe so."

"That's too bad. I came all the way to this magical world but no unicorn. Shame."

"Tell me more about this unicorn."

"Well where I come from there's this tale about a bunch of unicorns. They are graceful and beautiful, not to mention smart and powerful. Their names are Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity," I said with an amused grin.

"Are you making those names up, melleth nin? They sound like fancy food names," commented Legolas with a serious but innocent face. I chuckled.

"No. Those are their names. Together they are the protectors of the Ponyville."

"Ponyville," Legolas repeated, chuckling in amusement. "Shouldn't it be called Unicornville? I thought they are unicorns, not ponies."

"Hey, I don't come up with the story," I laughed softly, elbowing his side lightly. Legolas only chuckled, both of us enjoying our silly banter.

"How are you feeling today? Are you still in pain?" he asked and squeezed my hand.

"Not anymore. It lessened greatly."

Legolas sighed. "I wish I could be with you and not leaving you so frequently these days. Goheno nin, my love," he apologized.

I gazed at him with admiration. What have I done that I got him? I must have done something so right in my life. I let go of his hand and put both my arms on his waist and embraced him. I could feel his love for me emanating off of him, warming my heart. I hugged him tighter as he embraced me back lightly, seemingly afraid to break me or something.

"I could stay like this forever," he said with a happy sigh as he kissed my hair. His kisses lingered and I laughed lightly.

"But I can't," I teased him and let him go, "I'm not going to risk the Rohirrim people to think of us as immoral or something. The state we are in must be inappropriate for some people, what with so much public display of affection," I smirked.

Legolas arched an eyebrow attractively. "There's not many people pass this way often. I haven't even kissed you yet."

Heat crept up my neck and I giggled like a schoolgirl. Legolas pecked my lips lightly. He flashed me that boyish smile that I love so much. The smile reserved for me alone. His eyes shone with tangible longing and admiration, to which I only blushed harder.

"I love it when you laugh like that. The sound you made is like music to my ears."

My giggled dissipated into a shy smile. I didn't know what to say to his words. He grinned.

"And your blush is melting my heart like snow under the winter sun," he added as he brushed my cheek lightly with his curled fingers.

Jeez. At another occasion I would cringe or laugh very loudly at the cheesiness of his words. But if you're in love and live in this age, that would only sound romantic and sweet. I realized just how I love cheesiness, especially coming from him.

And who knows that Legolas can sweet talk so smoothly?

I began to sing shortly as his words reminded me of a song I used to know.

"...I will warm your heart like a winter sun, it's just the way it goes. It's all you need to know, it's all you need to know..."

I sang as I linked my hands behind his neck and looked up at his eyes. He brushed my hair softly and I couldn't wipe the stupid smile on my face.

"Beautiful," he said softly. I was unsure if it was meant towards me or the song. "I've never heard you sing that song before. Will you sing the rest of the song to me?"

"I'll think about it," I answered in fake indifference as I let go. He raised his eyebrows. I smiled.

"If you can find me a guitar, which I long to play so much, then maybe I will sing for you," I laughed lightly as I continued to stare at the distance.

"Anything for you, melleth nin."

He smiled fondly at me and I hugged his side. Silence passed for a moment until Legolas spoke again.

"You've been coming here everyday since you got out of the bed. Looking out in the distance," he stated before looking down at me and questioning me, "What are you waiting for?"

I smiled at him softly and brushed his golden locks that lay neatly on his chest.

"A messenger," I answered.

Legolas nodded and spoke. "Yet you know what message this messenger bears. Why not just tell already?"

The way his curious eyes graced his innocent expression was just adorable. He was intelligent. Deep down he knew the answer yet he couldn't stop himself from asking me anyway. I cupped his face with a hand, he leaned in to my touch and closed his eyes.

"Can't mess with fate, no matter how small it is. I've learned the hard way."

My mind traveled back to Boromir and it felt as if someone just picked on a healing wound in my heart and left a fresh gash on the scar. I looked away to gaze at the distance again, but Legolas's hands brought my face to him and he kissed me tenderly. The thought of Boromir disappeared and the movement of his lips eased whatever undesirable feeling I had in my chest. After a few moment he let go and looked at me with much love and understanding.

"Hannon le. For everything," I thanked him and he hummed, kissing me again between his smiling lips.

He froze suddenly in the middle of the kiss and his smile was gone in an instant. He pulled away and looked at the distance with a frown.

"Two children, riding on a horse. A boy and a girl," I stated but my eyes were questioning him. He blinked in surprise, a sign of confirmation and I walked briskly to the direction of the entrance with Legolas trailing behind me.

Just as predicted, a brown horse carrying two little kids came into view. My strides turned to a jog as I went to their direction. The horse stopped briefly before the boy fell off the horse. The sight pained me, and I moved my feet faster to get to them.

Later on Eowyn told us that the kids brought information about a nearby village that was destroyed by an army of Uruk-hai. Saruman was bringing the war upon us– one war that we had next to no chance to win. Not here, not in Edoras.

“Muster the Rohirrim! Muster all men, horses, women and children.” King Theoden stood up from his throne. “We will head for Helm’s Deep, at first dawn."

My gut twisted in discomfort. I looked at Legolas who looked impassive yet highly attentive at the conversation between the king and his officials. He sensed my eyes on him and I smiled abruptly before looking away, pretending to listen to the conversation.

After dinner Aragorn came beside me and asked about my condition.

"Leane," he called, "How are you faring?"

I smirked at the question that everyone seemed to give me everyday these days.

"Healthy as a horse," I replied coolly. He looked unconvinced by my optimism. I rolled my eyes.

"Okay, maybe that was just a bit too exaggerated. I still feel some ache in some parts of my body, but trust me, I am very well and am healing nicely," I admitted honestly. This seemed to suffice for the ranger to which he nodded. My eyes fleeted to the Evenstar necklace on his chest from Arwen briefly. I spoke.

"War is in the air," I muttered. "You men should worry more about yourselves, since you all are the ones that will go into the battle."

I touched the glowing necklace on his chest for a moment and Aragorn looked at me intently, as if waiting for me to spill all the secrets I have.

"Be careful. Just remember who you're fighting for the most, and be sure to return to them in one piece," I warned him, knowing what will happen to him on our way to Helm's Deep, "Draw your strength from the thoughts of those you love."

He looked taken aback, but then I smiled fondly at him and playfully punched his chest.

"Ow," he exclaimed lightly as he glared at me playfully, shaken away from his daze and I laughed. Aragorn almost always looked tense and serious at all times, but once you knew him, you know how much of a softie and kind he was.

"Arwen will be mad and kill you for the second time if you are killed out there. Probably killing me in the process for not taking care of you, or at least reminding you to take care of yourself. You've been lacking some sleep these days," I mumbled with a snort.

Aragorn's cheeks darkened a few shades of red at the mention of Arwen's name and I smirked. He reminded me so much of my brother, who would blush every time I teased him about his hot girlfriend. Aragorn squinted his eyes at me and opened his mouth.

"I assure you, my lady. Legolas will never let anyone kill you."

This time it was my turn to blush. Aragorn smiled triumphantly.

"Do not think I did not notice you and Legolas stealing kisses these few days when you think no one is looking," he stated in revenge, "He looked like he couldn't wait to get out of the king's presence every time we were discussing matters. He is awfully distracted these days. I wonder why."

I smiled shyly at him and looked away, admitting his victory at our banter.

"He has fallen for you hard, Leane. For elves, love is not a small feat. To them, it is only once for forever more."

Beneath his soft words, I could see his warning at just how important I was to Legolas, that if I ever decide to leave him, it will break him for the rest of his immortal life.

I nodded. "I love him too, Aragorn. I truly do. But I can't promise you anything, I can't promise him anything. I don't know what the future holds for me. But if it is up to me, I will escape all of this alive and be with him for the rest of my short life," I smiled.

"Short life?" Aragorn asked in confusion, his voice lowered to a whisper, "Doesn't the Infinity ring give you immortality?"

My jaw dropped to the ground in shock. "What?"

"You do not know? Didn't Lord Elrond told you?" Aragorn blurted.

"N-No!"

Silence hung as I processed this new information. Wtf. I didn't know if I was supposed to be happy or mad at this.

Immortality.

There are tales about individuals who strived to get it, to live forever. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea; I thought it would be exhausting, to live forever. Not to mention lonely.

Aragorn looked unsure about how he should feel about my reaction, whether to congratulate me or to comfort me.

I didn't notice since when Legolas had stood beside me, his eyes as wide as the saucer used to serve food in the dining hall. He looked like how I feel. That eavesdropping elf.

But soon his shock was turned to joy. A wave of relief and happiness radiated off of him. I looked at him in confusion.

"You seem happy," I blurted questioningly.

He only smiled at me brightly. His face seemed to glow even more with happiness. I couldn't help but wonder at the sight and I smiled in my confusion.

Legolas took my both hands in his and kissed my knuckles passionately. I blushed furiously and glanced back and forth at him and Aragorn who smiled in mischief as he lifted his brows.

"This is a great blessing from Eru himself, granting you with immortality," he finally answered, "So that I can have you in my arms forever, without fear of the years to take you away from me."

My heart soared at the realization. I could have forever with Legolas. I didn't have to live an unending, lonely life. A smile crept up my face at the promise of his words. Happiness swam in Legolas' eyes and our eyes locked together as his hands clasped mine.

Aragorn coughed and smiled mischievously, saying, "I think it is best for me to return to the sleeping quarters; you two seem like you could use some privacy."

I instantly blushed and released Legolas' hands, just remembered that Aragorn was still there. Legolas smirked at my shyness. Ugh, that face.

"Hannon le, mellon nin. I wish you a good night's rest," said Legolas in farewell as Aragorn smiled in amusement at us. He nodded before leaving us alone.

Legolas put his arm around my shoulder and kissed the side of my head. His happiness was infectious.

He escorted me to my door, which consisted of white cream coloured curtain. We stood in front of my room and gazed at each other before kissed me goodnight. He pulled away but I sensed his reluctance.

My eyes traveled to his lips again for a moment before he closed his eyes in surrender and pulled me again for another kiss. We heard footsteps nearing, but neither of us stopped kissing.

The thought of people seeing us kissing in the middle of the night in Rohirrim was unappealing for me, so I pulled him to me to my dark room behind the curtain.

If Legolas was surprised, he didn't show it. Instead, he pulled me into a deeper, passionate kiss once we're inside. His left hand holding the back of my neck as he tilted my head and his right hand traveled along my back, eliciting a pleasant shiver all over my body. Our breathing uneven and my chest heaved searching for air between our kisses. His touches sent a tingle down my spine, making me shiver. He smiled between our kisses and slowed down the pace.

He pulled his lips from mine but continued kissing my face in a circling movement all over my cheek, my eye, brow, temple, my ear and my jaw, then back to my lips. His both hands traveled back and forth on my back as if to warm me up. I'd never felt so loved before I felt like sinking– in a good way.

He finally ceased kissing me and looked down at me. I pouted. He laughed lightly and nozzled my nose. I giggled.

"Goodnight, melleth nin," he whispered lovingly.

Jeez. Elves and their super self-control. Damn elvish perks!

"That's it?" I whined.

"I cannot linger."

"Why? No one knows you're here," I responded as I brushed the ends of his golden locks on his chest.

"Exactly."

"Then stay for another five minutes and kiss me," I gave him a lopsided smile as I whispered to him.

He looked conflicted and I smiled shyly before adding.

"I promise to keep my hands to myself," I quipped half teasingly.

I blushed at my own audacity. It was dark, but I knew he could see how my cheek had turned a few shades darker. Legolas was silent for a moment, and I swear that if it wasn't dark, maybe, just maybe, he might as well be blushing.

"That is not what I worry about, my love," he answered flatly.

Suddenly I felt ashamed with my irrational request to him and blushed harder. Stupid me! I recovered quickly.

"Oh!" I gasped. "Are you needed somewhere else?" I asked apologetically as realization hit me.

He blinked and went still for a moment.

Out of a sudden he placed his hand on the back of my neck and I felt his mouth crashed into mine roughly. I tensed, surprised, but soon I returned his searing kiss with the same fervor. His fingers dug into my hair and massaged my scalp as he pressed me closer to his lean, firm body. Heat jolted inside of me as he kissed me in a way that he never did before. I felt desire flamed the heat between us. His hands traveled my back up and down before he fisted the fabric on my back.

That moment I tensed in anticipation, thinking he was going to rip my clothes off (if he was, I really didn't mind) but instead he let go and brought his hands to hold my arms tight. A pained moan escaped my lips as his hand gripped on my injured arm. Startled, he immediately back away, his eyes wide in alarm.

"I hurt you," he said between his breath, his hypnotic eyes wide as he stared at me.

Guilt washed over me. And it was not my emotion.

I smirked and I stepped toward him and gently kissed him.

"I am so sorry, Leane. I didn't mean to–"

"Shhh..."

He kissed me again softly and put his hands on my waist. He pulled away too soon to my liking, but the look of love in his eyes was just as warm as the kiss.

"Let me see your arm."

"It's fine. That was nothing."

Of course he ignored me. He led me to sit on my bed and light a candle beside me, then knelt in front of me on one knee and rolled my sleeve up gently.

His eyes lingered on the hand shaped bruises on my hand caused by the orcs and I clasped a hand to cover it from his eyes. He looked up at me wistfully.

This look he gave me was exactly why I didn't want him to see the bruises. He tended to take the guilt for my injuries as he grew more protective of me. All the more since I passed out in front of him.

He took away my clasped hand and placed feather light kisses on the bruises. I smiled at the touch. My heart was about to explode in a crazy mixture of emotions.

He gave me a small smile then rolled my sleeve higher to see the wound on my arm.

"See? It is fine. No blood. You're just too paranoid, pretty boy."

He smiled and rolled down my sleeve before tilting his head to kiss me again.

"I love you, Legolas," I said between kisses.

His kiss deepened and we kissed hastily for a moment until Legolas chuckled in our kiss and pulled away.

"This is why I ought not to linger. You are irresistible."

"I think it's the other way around," I retorted and smirked as he stood and kissed my hand. He smiled.

"Nay," he replied and kissed me on the forehead, "I shall leave you now. Sleep well. We have a journey ahead in the morrow. Good night, melleth nin."

"Good night, my Legolas."

His eyes lit up at the mention of 'my Legolas' and he pecked me on the lips for the last time. He flashed me a brilliant smile before exiting my room with graceful strides.
