Infinity

"Hundreds of years ago, our world was home to others, an inferior species, with looks like our own. Their communities were forged out of the fires of hate, faced with turmoil and destruction. Love was hard to find and impossible to keep. After the turn of the 22nd century, war broke out, covering the Earth with famine and death. Eventually came the bombs, weapons of mass destruction. Hundreds of people were killed; their world destroyed.

"Out of the rubble, we were born. An advanced species, from Homosapien to Homomultus. Here we live, void of the battles and hate, capable of finding true, lasting love, our youth gaining knowledge, following their glow to lead them to happiness. Here we Survive," the commentary ended as the screen went black.

"Luca, turn on the lights please," spoke Mrs. Sullivan. A young boy, with coffee black hair and blue eyes, got up, went over to the wall by the door and flipped on the lights. As he returned to his chair, Mrs. Sullivan began to speak again. "This all happened in 2112, 408 years ago. Who call tell me the key difference between us and homosapiens?"

The girl in the seat next to Luca raised her hand. As she did so her tanktop strap slid off her shoulder, exposing the top of an infinity sign, awake and glowing a bright blue.

"Yes, Alicia, go ahead," said Mrs. Sullivan.

"The biggest difference is our infinities." answered Alicia, a smile on her face.

"Well, yes, that is our biggest physical difference, but I was wanting a little more detailed of an answer. Anyone want to add to what Alicia said? Ah, yes, Jillian, go ahead."

Luca looked across the room just in time to see the young girl lower her raised hand. As she began to speak Luca couldn't help wonder if his eyes were playing a trick on him. "After the Great War our species evolved out of the survivors. We developed small infinity signs, glowing blue, positioned over hearts. The purpose they served was to lead us to our soul mate, the biggest challenge are precursors had faced. The glow would grow brighter the closer an individual got to their 'other half.' In the beginning people were obsessed, constantly trying to find their children's match even before they were capable of walking. That's when they developed the injection, one at birth that would block the glow and one that would reactivate it. They chose to give the activation injection to children on their first day of high school," Jillian finished.

As Mrs. Sullivan continued with the class, Luca sat there, still staring at the spot where Jillian's infinity sign was hidden under her shirt. He had seen it, black still, just like his own. The thoughts began to run through his mind. The ring of the bell released the class to lunch and pulled Luca from his thoughts.

The rest of the school day Luca was distracted by his thoughts. He was unsure if he should try to talk to Jillian about it or just let it be. She was the only girl at the school who constantly tried to keep her infinity hidden, just like Luca was the only guy who kept his covered. Luca knew he couldn't keep this to himself. If she really was the only one like him he had to know for sure.

The next morning, Luca found Jillian sitting on a bench outside of the library, a book in her hand, like every other morning. Luca took a deep breath as he approached her and spoke quietly. "Um, Jillian, c--can we go somewhere and t--talk," he said as he stumbled over his words.

"Uh, yeah, sure I guess," answered Jillian as she stood up and straightened her shirt. "Where do you want to go?" she added.

Luca rubbed the back of his head, his nerves getting the best of him. "Behind the classroom buildings?" he said and looked at her questioningly.

Jillian nodded her head slowly and began to follow Luca as he walked towards the classroom buildings. As they reached the back of the buildings, Luca's nerves lightened a little bit. He leaned against the wall. "I, I saw your tattoo, in Mrs. Sullivan's class yesterday. I, I saw that it's not glowing at all..." he said, trailing off at the end.

"I don't know what you think you saw..." Jillian began. Her voice was full of forced anger, but Luca could hear the hurt. She was hurt and scared. She instantly stopped speaking when Luca lowered the collar of his shirt, revealing his own infinity. Jillian stepped closer and gently touched his infinity. She spoke again, her voice softer than before, "Why us, I just, I don't understand..." Her voice trailed off as Luca slowly brushed her hair behind her ear.

"I don't why. I try to not even think about it. It is really nice to know that I'm not the only one though," Luca finished as he looked down.

"Yeah, I guess that's true," Jillian said as the bell rang, signaling the start of class. "We should probably head to class."

"Yeah, you're right. Talk to you later?" asked Luca, his voice hopeful.

"I would like that," Jillian responded as she walked off towards their morning class.

Luca leaned back against the wall and took a deep breath as he attempted to steady his, still overpowering, nerves. He walked into his class just as the tardy bell rang and took his seat near the door. The morning seemed to fly by for Luca and before he knew it the bell rang, releasing them to lunch. As Luca went to leave the classroom, he was stopped by Jillian.

"Luca, c--can we hang out after school today?" asked Jillian, her voice slightly shaky.

"Yeah, yeah, I would really like that," responded Luca as they left the room.

After school Luca met up with Jillian outside of the library again and they began to walk to the park together. "You look really nice today by the way Jillian," said Luca, finally breaking the silence.

"Thanks," she said as she began to climb the ladder that led to the top of the tall, tunneled, slide. Luca stood at the bottom of the ladder unsure whether or not to follow her. "Well aren't you gonna join me?" she asked and Luca began to climb the ladder.

"What are we doing up her?" Luca asked as he sat next to Jillian at the top of the tunnel.

"This is where I come when I need to think. There's almost never anyone at this park anymore. It's just nice, quiet, and calm. I don't know, I guess it's kinda stupid," she finished as she looked away.

Luca slowly grabbed Jillian's hand. "No, it's not stupid at all," he said as he smiled at her. She slowly turned back towards him, her cheeks flushed red. "I have my own little space like this, the rooftop of the old elementary school. You can see so much from up there, and you never have to worry about other people. I guess I just like being alone, less of chance of someone seeing..." he trailed off as he touched two fingers over his infinity.

"Can I see it again?" asked Jillian shyly.

"Yeah, of course," he responded as he pulled his shirt over his head and placed it on his lap. Jillian's hand traced the infinity sign softly and Luca blushed.

"Your's is one of the prettiest I've seen, even without the glow. Did yours ever glow?" she asked as scooted closer to him. Luca slowly shook his head no. "Neither did mine," she added as she looked down.

"Maybe it will someday," Luca said in an attempt to lighten her thoughts. "Or maybe someday you will find love without it. A beautiful girl like you has to be meant to be happy," he finished as she leaned her head onto his shoulder. Luca instinctively wrapped his arm around her and gently drew circles on her arm with his thumb.

They stayed like this for a while, both thinking about why their infinities weren't glowing. They both felt a way they never had before and didn't know if they could trust the feeling.

"Can I ask you something?" asked Jillian softly, breaking Luca from his thoughts.

Luca looked at her and answered softly, "Of course,"

"How can I know whether or not to trust my feelings without being able to see my glow?" she asked as she slowly raised her head and looked up at him.

"I guess we are just going to have to take leaps of faith every once in awhile," he answered, his voice just above a whisper.

"Like now?"

Luca nodded slowly and gently kissed Jillian. As the kiss broke her arms moved around his neck and they looked into each other eyes. Jillian tilted her head down, their foreheads touching and gasped. "What?" asked Luca.

"Your-- Your infinity. Look at it," she said as she moved her hand to his chest. "I've never seen one that bright," she added as Luca saw the glow radiating off his chest.

"Check yours," Luca said, his voice barely audible. Jillian slowly leaned away from Luca and pulled the collar of her shirt down revealing a bright glow. "It's beautiful," he added.

"Does, does this mean...? Are we...?" Jillian struggled to talk, unable to find the right words.

Luca nodded his head and slowly kissed her again. "Jillian Sara, you have ignited the glow within me. You are my soulmate, my other half. Will you stay by my side forever?" he asked as he wrapped his arms around her. She slowly nodded her head and moved into his arms.
