Chapter Two

"Are you even eating your ice-cream?"

I turn my head away from the ceiling and towards my little sister, she is leaning against my bed and looks like she's about to fall on me. I softly push her away.

"I don't know, do you want it?" I ask.

"Of course!" She takes the liquid ice-cream and goes back to her bed.

"Ewww look it's dripping." She holds the spoon above the bowl, letting the creamy soup drip back down.

"Gross, don't do that, it will spill." I say as I sit up.

"No it wo - oops..."

Too late. I look and see three splotches of chocolate ice-cream on our cream-coloured carpet. Yuck. Erica gets some tissue to clean it up but forgets that she is still holding the bowl when she bends down and spills some more.

"Stop it, your making a mess!" I laugh as I get up and grab the bowl from her.

I put it back on the dresser then grab her pillow and hit her with it.

"Your disgusting!"

"Hey!"

She runs to my bed and grabs my pillow, but she is slow and I hit her again, this time her head. She hits my stomach and walks back to her bed giggling. I stand up and go for a hit on her stomach as well, since those seem to work out good, but she moves last minute and I end up knocking down that bowl of ice-cream that's been annoying me since I got home. It's actually satisfying to see it fall. The bowl shatters as it meets the ground even though the carpet should have kept it from breaking.

"Oops..." I say as I stand there and watch the puddle grow.

Erica slides off her bed and hits me again.

"Now who's gross?" She teases and laughs some more.

"Whatever, help me clean this up." I say as I toss Kleenex at her.

We are still cleaning the mess when the voices downstairs amplify, as if they have climbed the stairs and are about to start clawing at our door any minute.

"Anna?" Erica asks as she puts her cloth down.

"Hm?" I sit up and look for any remaining stains.

"What do you think is happening downstairs?"

"I don't know" There are no more stains so I put down my cloth as well. "Should we check?"

"Um..." She sounds lost as she looks up at our door, "No, I don't wanna go down yet."

We clean the rest of our room in silent from there on. As we finish, more noise echoes through the hallways and adds to the voices coming from the living room. Something is happening downstairs and I'm starting to get impatient. I want to check, and I think even Erica is starting to worry.

"Okay I'm going downstairs, do you want to come?" I ask as I start to stand and walk towards the door.

"Uh I'm not staying up here alone." She runs and opens the door before I even stand up.

We sneak down the steps because I assume it's better they don't see us. Half way down, we see Ethan walking to the living room when he bumps into one of the men with the pins. This is the one that ignored me earlier so I duck down and make Erica do the same. We lean against the wall for five minutes as they chat causally, but we can't make out what they're saying so I eventually decide to walk in on them. But as I start to stand, Ethan punches him in the face.

"Ha! It's what he gets for being so rude." I think as I sit back down.

But what the heck? We poke our heads just enough to get a glimpse of what's happening.

The man says something as he recovers and Ethan shakes his head in response. That's when he swings his fist and smites Ethan across his jawline before walking back into the living room, where I guess more chaos is happening. We hear a lamp shatter as we run up to Ethan. He already has a purplish bruise where the guy hit him. Ouch. I'm guessing the guy didn't use just his fists for the hit. We hear more shouts and bangs from the living room, something else breaks, and then there is a loud unrecognizable scream. Probably the women, I think she's hurt. This continues for a while, the shattering and shouting.

"What's happening?" Erica asks in a shaky voice as we catch up to Ethan.

"What?!" He shouts back.

I guess he didn't hear because of the background noise, or maybe he hasn't recovered yet from that mighty hit.

"What happened with the that guy?!" I ask this time, almost shouting so he can hear.

"These guys are fake, those pins aren't even real and they've got fatal weapons on them. I thought they were from the queen, and those weapons reassured me because where else would they get those from, but turns out that's not it." He stops talking to rest his jaw. "I saw his fake pin and tested him to see if he really was from the castle, but he lied to my face and got upset when I questioned him further. Then he asked me questions about this town." He takes a step back and pulls out a ninja star half the size of his hands from his back pocket. "He told me if I didn't talk he would force me using this."

"What?" I look down at the tiny weapon. I can't believe this. "Who does he think he is? You didn't say anything, did you?" I ask.

"No, of course not. I told him he needed to leave my house before I called the cops. That's when he tried to cut me with the star, as if that was gonna do something, but before he did I hit him and grabbed the star." He stops to put the star back in his pocket. "Then there was a loud shatter from the other room and he quickly hit me back before rushing in." He leans against the wall when he's done.

Erica, who's been standing speechless this whole time moves closer to the wall and looks up at him.

"Are you okay Ethan?" She asks in a quite brittle voice.

"Ya, I guess." He puts his hand on his jaw. "He's got to have some metal in his glove, that punch was hard core." I can tell by the look on his face that he's fighting pain since the bruise is throbbing, and it has already begun to swell.

"Want some ice?" I ask.

"Uh nah. It's not that bad actually." He answers, but I know that's an excuse.

"Where do you think they're from? And where did the they get the weapons from?" I ask.

When no one answers, I realize it was really a question to myself since Ethan is too busy with his bruise and Erica doesn't really know about this stuff. I lean against the wall across from them and look at the ceiling as I try to think. No one besides the defenders are allowed to carry weapons in this town, and these guys don't have the purple sword-shaped badges that classify them as defenders. So...the only way they could have weapons without the badges is if they are from outside of town! Of course! Our two rival kingdoms have been sending these people all week, I couldn't figure out why the old jewellery shop was shut down so suddenly, but now I realize it is because of them. They already took down three shops last week and now they are are going after our people.

"Ethan! They came from somewhere beyond the Umbra Forest!" I say as I rush to where he and Erica are standing in our foyer. "They look like they are from the castle because they probably are, just not our castle. All of the kingdoms have pins remember? And all those boarded up shops last week, I think it was them that did it."

"Oh man, I think your right!" He says and then he mutters to himself in a low voice, "Should have thought of that myself."

I hear it loud and clear thanks to my good senses. I turn to my sister and smirk a little, because sounding smarter than your older, clearly more intelligent, sibling is the best.

An object shatters once again, snapping me back to the urgency of this peril. I turn back to Ethan and we lock eyes for a brief second.

"I think these guys are espionage from the other kingdoms, and the people of our town are their new targets."
