Chapter 7 - Superhero Stalker

A weird sound escaped my mouth involuntarily, both at the pain of the phone smacking hard on my lips and the realization of someone dressed in complete black clothes hovering outside my window. Almost immediately, I removed the phone away from my face, tossing it aside and quickly glancing towards my window, my sleepiness dissolving away.

Oh no.

Please don't tell me, is it a...

I swallowed down my saliva, a dreadful look on my face as I slipped out from my bed. Squeezing my eyes close, I shook my head adamantly, not wanting to think about anything. I dragged my feet towards the window, facing away from it as my eyes remained close.

No, no!

Remember what they said, Jean! If you acknowledge it, it will only be worse.

Don't look at it.

Don't look at it.

Don't look at it.

Don't even mention the word, don't even think of the word!

Alas, my mind didn't want to obey my thoughts, my eyes flying open and I noticed that I was right in front of my window. Still seeing the person hovering outside my window, only being able to make out his tall and slim silhouette, I opened my mouth.

"Gh-ghos-"

"Shh!" The person suddenly flew closer towards me at an alarming speed, cutting off my words instantly, his finger on his lip. A pair of different coloured eyes registered in my mind before my body automatically stumbled backwards in surprise, my whole world tilting.

"Yo-wah!"

The familiar man immediately grasp hold of my hands, stabilizing me and landing down onto my bedroom floor. I blinked rapidly, still trying to comprehend the situation.

"You-you are...the...wha-why are you..." I stuttered my words out, swallowing my saliva down my throat again and frowning. He patiently waited for my response, standing awkwardly in my bedroom.

"Ah! The heterochromia man!" The word finally clicked in my mind and I blurted it out in excitement, before quickly returning to my frown.

"Wa-wait, what are you doing here? Why are you here? And who said you could enter my bedroom?"

"...heterochromia man?"

"Yeah! You know, because of your-uh, eyes." I answered, along with a nervous short laugh.

The heterochromia man, or should I say, Omni, stared at me silence. I couldn't tell what expression he was showing on his face now due to his mask covering his face.

"Anyway, the reason for me being here is for me to confirm something, and I need to do it quickly. I didn't mean to intrude your personal privacy." He said in a disguised voice, making me curious.

"Confirm something?" I cocked my head to the side and he gazed straight into my eyes, causing my heart to skip a beat at his beautiful eyes.

"Were you one of the victims involved in that incident a year ago?"

"Of course not, I was far away from the city when it happened." I furrowed my eyebrows slightly, giving Omni an odd look.

"You weren't one of them?"

"Should I be one of them?" I raised an eyebrow, a baffled expression on my face.

"But that's impossible."

"What is?"

"The fact that I've saved you three consecutive times." He stated solemnly and after a few seconds, I burst out into a nervous chuckle.

"What? You were lying?"

"Oh god, no! I wasn't! It's just that I have this curse over me that gets me into trouble more often that others!"

"A curse?"

"Ever since I was young." I nodded my head at him and he was speechless at my answer.

"...how can one even get into a hostage situation, a train accident and a house burglary three consecutive times without some sort of...power?" He questioned in disbelief.

"You thought I had powers? To attract all these supervillians? Well, sorry to be a spoilsport, but I don't have any, nada, nope, nuh-uh."

Opening and closing his mouth, he made some gestures as if he was trying to speak but he couldn't find the words to convey his message.

"...what are you?" He finally managed to speak and I blinked my eyes at him.

The heck?

Does he think I am some sort of...alien?

It's not like I'm some kind of weird species! What the heck does he think I am?

"I'm human!" I said, narrowing my eyes at him.

"But how can one human be involved in these many dangerous situations three straight times?" He asked in disbelief, his eyes widening and I felt myself pouting unconsciously.

"A person with really, really bad luck." I responded, huffing indignantly.

How rude!

If there is such thing as the luckiest man in the world, there can also be such thing as an unluckiest woman in the world!

Jeez!

So many times, I've come across people who doesn't believe in how unlucky I am.

"But that is so..." He trailed off, still persistent in his hypothesis of me being an Apeiron.

Just when I thought the conversation would go any further, police sirens rang in the air. The look on my face softened as I gestured at him to hurry off towards it.

"Alright, let's just stop this silly conversation here. Go on, be a superhero and save the day, Omni."

His whole demeanor changed, as if there was a certain charm to him now, like admiration. He nodded stiffly, spinning around and his broad back faced me as he faced the window.

Hovering into the air, I gazed at him, unfazed and he glanced back at me, an unfathomable look in his eyes. "I'm keeping my eye on you."

I rolled my eyes, letting out a resigned sigh. "I'm telling you the honest truth, I'm just someone who has a knack for getting into trouble, Omni."

"...thanks for giving me a name, by the way." He grunted out begrudgingly and flew off gracefully into the air, a small elated smile on my face as I observed him.

"You're very welcome." I whispered into the air, at the same time, a sense of trepidation filled me at his words.

"I'm keeping my eye on you."

*****************

What.

The.

Hell.

I stared wide-eyed at my bathroom mirror, my disheveled hair being the least concern as my eyes remained fixated at one certain part of my face.

My lips.

They are freaking...swollen!

"Oh my god, I look like one of those people who just did the Kylie Jenner's lip challenge." I muttered out, an uncomfortable feeling around lips as I spoke.

And it doesn't help that it's on just the top right of my lips!

"This ish horrijible." I said again, messing up my words to reduce the uncomfortable feeling.

...oh no.

My phone alarm rang, startling me so badly that I almost tripped and felt in my own bathroom. I panted, desperately gripping onto my towel handle as I balanced myself to my feet. Glancing at my phone on the sink, I read the message that appeared on the screen.

Meet Jessie for movie.

I groaned, smacking my forehead with my palm.

Great job, Jean, superb job!

How are you supposed to go out looking like this?!

Hurriedly getting ready for the day, I hastily dialed Jessie after that and quickly cancelled our movie day for today. Thank god we hadn't bought the tickets yet, Jessie would be extremely furious, since she was money-savvy.

"Why can't you come today?"

"Well, uh, my lips...they are, uh..." I said, not really knowing how to come up with a precise explanation.

"Your lips? What's wrong with them?"

"Uhm, why not you come over to my house today?"

"What? Is it something you can't explain through here?"

"No, not really." I replied, a sheepish smile appearing on my face despite knowing that she couldn't see it.

"Mhmm, I'll come over since I'm free after work ends anyway."

"Thanks, Jessie! See you soon!" I said cheerily, trying my best not to mess my words up. Hanging up on the call, I laid on the couch, switching on the television as I glanced lazily around the house.

My parents weren't home, since I woke up later than usual and I couldn't join them for breakfast before they went to work.

Walking to the kitchen, I poured myself a cup of water before strolling back to my couch, sitting down on it.

Hm.

Since I'll be at home for the whole day, I'll just cook up a simple dinner for them.

I stretched myself, tiny groans escaping my mouth as I relaxed into the couch, focusing my attention back on the television.

"Last night, the city's favourite superhero once again saved the day. One of the office building in the city's busiest district caught on fire and the apeiron superhero, Omni, swooped down, saving the day. It has yet to be revealed whether the fire was done by an arsonist or by accident."

Sipping on my cup of water, I swallowed down the cool liquid, watching the news with rapt attention.

Why are they calling him the city's favourite superhero?

There isn't any other superhero in this city anyway.

**********************

The moment Jessie saw my face, she kneeled onto the living room's floor, laughing heartily, holding onto her stomach.

"That isn't funny." I pouted, folding my arms across my chest and glaring at her.

"Yo-your lips! The-they look like!" She wheezed out, pointing a trembling finger at my lips as her shoulder shook with mirth.

"I know!"

"Oh man!"

"Stop laughing!"

"So, mind telling me what really happened?" She questioned, after recovering from her laughter.

I heaved a long sigh, both of us sitting down on the couch as the television blared softly in the background.

"Well, let's start with..."

******************

Jessie's first reaction was to squeal at me having a secret meeting with the city's superhero that every female in the city wanted to date.

Well, that's what Jessie claimed, as I couldn't believe that every female in the city was fawning over him.

Her second reaction was to laugh, again, at my misery and at the fact that he didn't believe I was the unluckiest person alive.

"He even said, 'I'm keeping my eye on you', like what reason do I have to lie to him?!"

"You can't blame him, Jean. You are like a living catastrophe."

"Ugh, what am I supposed to do then? Let him stalk me with his eyes?" I blew the hair out of my face, my life was already painful and troublesome enough. Now, I have a superhero starting to get suspicious of me since I'm getting into too much trouble.

"Tell the police."

"He's a superhero, Jessie. You expect the police to believe me? 'Oh hey, you know the city's superhero, Omni? Yeah, he's stalking me.' Nope, I don't think so." I dead-panned and Jessie let out a light-hearted chuckle.

"Hey, Jean, I'm sure if he is a superhero, he is supposed to know the difference between right and wrong. He'll be busy saving the city anyway, do you really think he has the time to stalk you?"

"Hm, maybe not." I frowned, resting my chin on my hand, directing my eyes to the clock, realising it was close to 6 PM.

"Oh crap, it's already so late? I have to make dinner!" I exclaimed, hurrying to the kitchen and checking the refrigerator for the available ingredients.

"Dinner? Well, I'm definitely staying for dinner."

"Jessie! At least help me if you are staying for dinner! Since I'm cooking your share too!" I hollered to her, sighing when I realised there were a few missing ingredients that I needed for dinner.

"Jean, did you forget about the time you let me help you?" Jessie stated and I froze in mid-step, turning to look at her.

I cringed, images of the horrible day appearing in my mind. Let's just say, Jessie was a walking disaster when it comes to cooking or house chores. Whereas, I was the opposite of her, the only time that I wouldn't be clumsy or forgetful would be house chores and cooking.

...okay, maybe not everytime, sometimes I'm still clumsy but I'm not that clumsy when it comes to those!

"Fine, I'll cook and you buy the groceries! You have a car, don't you?"

"Jean-"

"Oh wait, forget I said that! You are horrible at buying groceries too!" I huffed and she giggled softly, following behind me as we headed to her car, locking up the house at the same time.

*********************

The person in front of the queue had massive amount of items to purchase, making Jessie tap her foot impatiently while I just stared blankly into space.

The cashier informed the customer in front of me of the price and he nodded, digging into his pockets. However, he hesitated when he found nothing inside his pockets and he fumbled around, searching for his wallet. Everyone around us, including the cashier started to feel impatient too, and soon, everyone started grumbling at him.

"I'm so sorry, I forgot about my wallet. Do you mind if I-"

"Dude, if you are some poor vagrant, you shouldn't have even bought that many items!" One of the customers behind the queue exclaimed rudely.

"Yeah, just leave this place! You shouldn't be in here in the first place!" Another customer added and I silently gasped at their words.

These jerks!

How can they label someone like that without even knowing them properly?

However, I knew the reason for them jumping to this conclusion, the lankly man looked utterly haggard with loose clothing. There were even holes in the shirt.

"What did you just say?" The man asked and I could hear his voice trembling slightly in anger.

Why are they causing more trouble?

Couldn't they have just gone first while he went to get his wallet?

Geez, I swear, people are so dumb sometimes.

"Hey guys, just st-"

"I said, get out of here! You beggar!" One of them interrupted me, everyone ignoring my protest to end this dispute.

The lights started flickering ominously as I felt a menacing aura surrounding us. I gulped nervously, switching my gaze to the poor man who was getting panting heavily now.

"Oh no." I whispered out, stepping away from him, entwining my hands with Jessie. I glanced towards her and she held the same distressed look on her face.

"We have to get out of here." Jessie whispered into my ear and I nodded in agreement.

"I'll make you regret saying that." He growled out, spinning around as the lights around the grocery store flickered even more. One of them sparked brightly and after that, a loud crackling sound was heard, the light going out.

The man's eyes started glowing, a combination of a red and orange hue and the jerks who were insulting him before started to back off, along with everyone. I noticed the cashier reaching for her phone on the counter and I held my breath, my heart racing wildly, the loud thumping vibrating in my ears.

"Don't you dare call the police!" He roared furiously, aiming his hand at the phone in the cashier's hand. The cashier hurriedly threw her phone of her hands, just a second before an energy beam, resembling a laser, shot out of his hands.

Everyone screeched in horror as the phone was completely wrecked, the cashier collasping down to the ground in fright, her body shivering at the sight.

"I'll make sure every single one of you regrets it! I'm not some beggar!" He barked, the whole place blacking out in an instant as the lights sparkled brightly and a loud popping sound was heard throughout the grocery store. Almost instantly, the whole grocery store was swallowed in darkness, the source of light only coming from the outside.

At the same time, Jessie pulled me forward, heading for the automatic glass doors. I gasped in alarmed, noticing his frightful gaze on us and I extricated out of Jessie's grip, running towards the Apeiron man.

"Jean! What are you-" Jessie cried out in panic as I sprinted towards him, his hand already aiming at us, especially Jessie.

"Wargh!" I shouted, tackling the man to the ground and he grunted, the energy beam from his hand shooting out.

It narrowly missed Jessie, the energy beam just inches away from her face as it landed on the glass door. The glass shattered deafeningly, everyone quickly scrambling away from me and him, while Jessie stood there, frozen in her spot.

Meanwhile, I whimpered softly, my body lying on the man and his strong body odor flooding my nose, making me cringe in disgust.

Not again.

And this time, it was because of two jackasses who decided to be the mean bullies for the day.

Ugh.

"Get off me, you stupid woman!" The man shoved me roughly and I landed on the floor, wincing. Suddenly, I felt a dangerous presence around me as I opened my eyes, staring right into the Apeiron's terrifying eyes.

"No one makes fun of me and get away with it!"

"...can't believe I went through all that trouble for this." He suddenly added softly, directing his hand towards my face and my breathing hitched, my heart rate speeding up. At that point of time, my mind wasn't registering the words he said.

"Jean! No!" Jessie shrieked in horror and I watched, wide-eyed as she ran towards me.

"Stay back, Jessie!" I yelled, pushing my hand out to her, gesturing for her to stop.

Suddenly, a gust of wind blew by and the glowing hands that were aiming for my face disappeared. In that moment of time, my eyes managed to meet a pair of familiar eyes and a comforting warmth began to surround my body.

Omni.

I'll be changing my uploading schedule to every Friday instead of Wednesdays and Fridays, since I am too busy right now.
