Chapter 11 - Pitter-Patter Goes My Heart

Staring at one another with wide eyes, I recognised his face instantly, however, I couldn't remember his name.

Wait.

What was his name again?

The dude that likes Jessie....

Uhmm, uhhhh...

"Na-nathan! That's right, the dude that likes Jessie! Nathan Scott!"

His expression was a mixture of annoyance, embarrassment and disbelief. He opened his mouth to speak, but he was unable to formulate his words, gesturing wildly.

I resisted the urge to laugh at him, biting on my lip to hold in my laughter bubbling inside of me.

He seems like a very horrible pantomime.

"...wh-wha-why, how?" He struggled his words out, utterly bewildered as he pinched his arm. He winced in pain but the shock in his eyes deepened when he realised this wasn't a dream.

"Wh-what are you doing here, Nathan?" I questioned, my expression reflecting his. We were both equally stunned by one another--I mean, my father told me there was no one livig in this house!

"That's what I would like to ask you, Jean." Nathan said, giving me a dubious look. Something undecipherable flashed past his eyes, before returning to his dubious look.

"Ask me? But you are trespassing here!"

"Tre-trepassing? I practically live here!" Nathan sputtered out in disbelief, his tone held a hint of annoyance at my accusing tone.

"Dad told me no one lives here, except for his friend's son, which is in a coma! Don't lie to me!"

To think that he would be a great man for Jessie, hah! What a liar!

"Lying? Lying? He's my best friend, that I've been with since I was five! This is like my second house!" Nathan retorted and I rolled my eyes at his blatant lie, crossing arms over my chest.

"Oh really? Show me some prove then." I raised my eyebrows at him and he narrowed his eyes at me, taking a step to the side. His response made me frown in confusion, while he continued giving me a glare.

"Hah! I knew it, you are lying--oh...oh, you...aren't."

He revealed a set of pictures frames behind him, on the shelves of the worktable. The pictures ranged from a family to two boys, that eventually became adolescents and finally to young adults.

One of them was an exact replica of Nathan, making me laugh nervously in return.

"Now, tell me, what are you doing here, Jean?" Nathan asked me, his eyes full of suspicion, folding his arms across his chest.

"Well, let's just say, this is where I'm staying at, for now."

"Wh-what?! You're living here?!" Nathan's eyes looked like they could bulge out at any moment.

"Erm, uhh...long story short, my family needs a place to hide and my dad said his friend agreed to let him stay here temporarily." I explained anxiously as the panic grew even more in his eyes.

"Your father knows Thomas?"

I'm guessing that's my dad's friend's name.

Not knowing what else to say, I just nodded my head. This was in a very awkward situation to be in, since my eyes couldn't stop wandering around his lean body. The way the water droplets dripped from his hair down to his chest, made my heart skip a beat.

Sensing eyes on his naked torso, he blushed slightly, covering his body with his arms. Nevertheless, his arms didn't help as I see them tensing up from the cold air. My face felt hot, making me feel conscious as I spun around, darting my eyes away from the appealing sight.

God.

This is my first time seeing a naked man, uh no, almost fully naked.

Hearing the familiar rustling sound of clothes, I tried to shake away the image of him putting his shirt on in a sexy manner.

Goddamnit.

Stop it, damn dirty mind!

He cleared his throat and I slowly spin around, peeking a look in a cautious manner.

"It's fine, I'm fully dressed now." Nathan chuckled at my timidness and I coughed uneasily. He was dressed in a simple grey t-shirt and a pair of black sweatpants.

Just then, I heard a muffled ringtone coming from the worktable. He sauntered towards the table, picking up the phone; which I assumed was his, answering it.

"Hello?"

I was tempted to sneak away, but I wasn't sure if it was the best decision right now. Hence, I decided to wait until Nathan's call was over.

"...yes, I've already met them."

"...no, it's fine, you don't need to apologise, it should be me. Thanks Thomas, I'll pay a visit soon."

Finally done with his phone call, he sighed. "Seems like Thomas told me everything, I'm sorry for being so rude earlier. I shouldn't have raised my voice like that."

"What? No, no! It's fine, it should be me, since I was the one accusing you first!"

Why is he so polite? I'm the one at fault here, besides, I'm not even allowed to be in this room.

"Seems like we are both at fault here then." An amused smile appeared on Nathan's face and I gave him a stiff smile in return.

"That shouldn't be the only thing I should be apologise for though." He mused to himself and I frowned in confusion.

"What?"

He was caught off guard by my response, and he quickly recovered, plastering a small smile on his lips. "Nothing, I was thinking of something else."

"Erm, so...why aren't you at your house anyway?" I questioned hesitantly.

"I have some of my stuff here, and it's too much of a hassle to move them back."

I hummed in understanding just as my mother called out to me from the living room.

"Should I tell my parents...?"

"It's alright, I'll explain it to them myself."

"Okay."

Let's just say, when Nathan introduced himself to my parents as someone living here from time to time, he gave them a mini heart-attack.

***********************

With my graduation ceremony coming in three weeks, Jessie and I were still trying to perfect my speech for the ceremony. The principal chose me as the spokesperson for the ceremony, since I'm one of the top students and well-known amongst the students.

Also, I was apparently the only one who agreed to be the spokesperson, the others claimed to be too busy to do it.

Well, the principal is right, I am popular.

Popular for being a major klutz that is surprisingly smart.

It's a pathetic thing to be popular for, especially after appearing on the news like a mad woman.

Time flew past and before I knew it, it was already nighttime. My phone chimed, knowing there was a message for me. Still immersed in my script, I stretched over to Jessie's bed, blindly reaching out for my phone.

"Aghh!" I cried out in pain, my bruised back throbbing at the strain. I forgot about my injured back and Jessie just returned from the restroom, hurriedly passing me my phone.

"Jean! How many times do must I tell you not to strain your back? It'll make the injury worse!"

"Ye--ah, I know..." I winced, clicking my tongue and flinging my phone back to bed, the message being an advertisement.

"You okay?"

"It's fine, stop worrying."

"How can I not? You have an injured back along with those evil Apeirons hunting you down!"

Letting out a weak chuckle, I disregarded my phone buzzing noisily on the bed.

Stupid advertisements.

Mumbling the script to myself, the sound of my phone buzzing was drowned out. I heard a soft sigh coming from Jessie, snapping out of my concentration when I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder.

"Jean, your phone has been buzzing non-stop, just check your phone again."

"Leave it, it's probably just advertisements again."

"Why would advertisements be coming from 'That Person'?" Jessie asked curiously and those words made my head swivel towards her, I was surprised that my neck didn't crack.

Snatching my phone out of her hands, I glanced towards Jessie once more as she pursed lips, contemplative.

"You are hiding something, aren't you?"

Plastering a fake smile on my face, I hurried to the bathroom and locked myself inside.

"Jean!" She hollered my name, making me wince at her loud voice reverberating throughout the bathroom.

"I'll tell you later!"

"You better!"

I shook my head at her, hastily checking my messages. Each message contained a few words, making me chuckle slightly at how brief they were.

Meet me at the rooftop.

Right now.

At wherever place you are at.

"Jean?"

Lifting my head up, I read the messages again and bolting out of the room, trying my best not to strain my back at the same time.

"Hey! Where are you going?"

"Somewhere! I'll be back soon!"

"Be careful! Your back-"

"Ouch!"

I knew Jessie was sighing and I slowed my pace down, heading to the rooftop of her house.

********************************

Pushing the door open, I stepped onto the rooftop, instantly greeted by a gust of wind. Blinking my eyes at the moon, I looked at my phone, not realising it was already this late.

"Are you alright?" A familiar voice questioned in concern, making me gasp slightly as I met a pair of mesmerising eyes.

His outfit completely blended in with the dark, the only feature that stood out were his eyes.

"I'm fine. Why do you ask that?"

"You are pretty late, I thought something happened to you and..." Omni trailed off, spinning around.

I frowned, shaking off the odd feeling in my heart as he said those words.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't looking at my phone, I thought it was advertisements again."

Omni nodded in understanding, his back still facing me and I scratched my head, feeling awkward.

"So...why did you call me?" I asked, until a thought struck my mind.

"No, wait. How did you even know I was here?" I furrowed my eyebrows as he finally decided to face me.

"I wanted to check if you were safe." Omni answered in a straightforward manner, my heart palpitating at his words.

"You-you could have called, you know?" I replied, chuckling to hide my nervousness.

Something flickered past his eyes and he took a step towards me without warning. "Just needed to be sure."

Calm down, Jean.

"Alright--how did you know I was here then?"

He gazed at me, remaining silent and his intense gaze made me feel flustered. "Wh-what?"

"Stay safe." He said before proceeding to levitate in the air and soaring into the sky, disappearing from my sight.

Observing the clear night sky, I heaved a sigh, composing myself. I knew he ignored my question and somehow, I didn't want to pursue it any further. Preparing to head back inside, I spotted something in the distance. It was a familiar man flying towards me, my eyes widening in recognition.

Why is he coming back?

He landed unsteadily on the rooftop, managing to balance himself. With long strides, something glinted in his eyes as he neared me.

"Why did you come back? What-"

Reaching his arm out, he pulled me into a gentle hug. He wrapped his arm around me hesitantly, being extremely careful not to touch my injured back.

Shocked at this intimate gesture, my words were abruptly cut off as my face brushed against his hoodie. My nose was inches away from meeting his chest, my eyes still wide open.

"Wh-wha-what are yo-you doing?" Floundering and stumbling over my words, I felt a sudden heat rising to my cheeks. Trying to extricate myself from his grip, he gently tugged me back in place, leaning in closer causing my nose to press against his hard chest.

"Don't, you'll hurt your back." He murmured into my ear and I gasped silently, the closeness was making my heart flutter.

"Why are you doing this?"

"I need you to trust me and stay calm." He responded, a frown present on my face until he lifted me up with a single arm; the arm wrapped around my lower waist. I gasped aloud this time, my arms automatically going around his neck.

"What are you--oh my god!" I exclaimed, becoming frantic when my feet weren't touching the hard, concrete ground. Instead, it touched empty air, causing me to squeak.

Glancing down, I realised that I was slowly hovering higher and higher in the air, throwing a frightened look to Omni.

"What are you doing? Let me down!"

"Do you trust me?" He questioned me.

"What?" I said, exasperated at how he can be asking such a question in this situation.

If I struggle now, there's no doubt that I would fall.

"Do you trust me?" He repeated the same exact words and I looked down, the distance between the ground and us increasing steadily.

"Why would you-" I growled my words out, lifting my head up to stare at him.

My words were cut off by the distance between our faces, despite him wearing a mask, my heart still skipped a beat. His eyes were earnest, but even the closeness surprised him as his eyes widened slightly.

"No." I whispered my answer out and he broke from his reverie.

"What?"

"No, I don't trust you."

I don't even know you, even though you've saved my life several times.

His eyes narrowed with hurt before they softened with a look of understanding in them.

"...of course, I'm a stranger after all." He muttered, but since I was only inches away from his face, I could clearly hear his words. The disappointment in his voice caused a twinge of guilt in my heart but I stayed firm in my answer.

We continued floating up higher and higher, and I blinked away from his captivating eyes, praying that he doesn't notice my pounding heart. Directing my eyes behind him to avoid looking at him, I noticed two objects a few meters away from us, making me squint my eyes at them.

They were coming closer and closer with each passing second. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that they weren't objects, they were silhouettes of two people flying towards us.

A gasp escaped from my mouth, gaining Omni's attention as I felt his eyes on me. "Behind us!"

He spun us around and from the way his arm slightly tightened around my lower waist, I knew he saw them. Whoever they were, I can only feel an ominous atmosphere surrounding them.
