After I was fully dressed, I made my way down the stairs and into the dining room where delectable looking food was being placed on the table in Aunt Pol's virgin China.
Everyone was here including our guest, Alfie, who was in the kitchen taking the fresh turkey out of the stove.
I walked into the kitchen and to Alfie.
He glanced at me and smiled.
"Hello, love."
"I'm so terribly sorry you had to witness me in such a horrendous state early this morning. I truthfully have never been so barbaric in my short years of living. I-I am not quite aware of what came over me, but I-I owe you all apologies. And, well, I hope you do accept them." I say in a hushed tone.
He looks up from stuffing mixed vegetables into the cooked turkey and smirks.
"You have no reasoning to be ever so sorry, darling. For I was the intruder of your home. I should not have seen you like that in the first place. It is quite alright, love."
I looked at my hands, blushing and smile.
With his clean hand, Alfie raises my chin.
"Let's eat, shall we?" He shouts so his voice is audible to everyone in the house. His eyes stay on me and he smugly winks whilst grabbing the rest of the food.
"We shall." My smile brightens as we both walk over to the large table were everyone is already seated and filling their plates and glasses to the rim.
Two open seats were left in between Esme and Dean. I, of course, sat next to Esme and Alfie next to me.
We all began our feast in comfortable silence with the sounds of only utensils scratching plates filling the room.
I placed a wee spoonful of mashed potatoes in my mouth and looked at Esme with a smile.
I giggled at the sight of her purposely placing carrots into her mouth to make them appear as walrus teeth. I covered my mouth and tried not to laugh too hard.
Pol looked at Esme and me from across the table smiled small.
Of course being the eldest she had to stop us from being impolite and have us act more "lady-like", even though you could tell she so desperately wanted to burst into fits of laughter as well. She carefully kicked us from underneath the table and Esme started to actually eat the carrots.
Pol cleared her throat and looked up at Alfie.
"So, Alfie, I am aware you agreed to work with Tommy here in trade for men and police relations?"
"Oh well, yes ma'am! You see..."
I started to lose consciousness in the conversation and arrived on my own train of thought.
The room was so quiet without Ada...
No, no, no! I was not to think of her. No. She betrayed me. She told me she didn't want me. She is perfectly content without my presence... Or was she? What if she actually misses me? What if life with Freddie is what she really wanted and felt forced into the marriage and having a child with him? No! Stop. She doesn't miss me. Not at all.
But I missed her...
Isn't it sad how you can love someone so much and devote your life around them, but they just throw you around? Treat you simply as a rag doll and pick you up only when they need something, but then put you down when their needs are fulfilled?
It's not fair. Nothing is.
I was sprung out of my thoughts by a knock on the front door.
Pol looked at me and said, "Daisy, dear, won't you get the door please?"
I cleared my throat and nodded, pushing my chair out and walking to the door.
Opening the heavy wood door, my eyes met with none other than Ada and her newly wed partner, Freddie.
I stood and stared at Ada who was grinning ear to ear.
"Oh, Daisy!!! My dearest friend." She shouts and hugs me tightly, as I stood as straight as a pole.
My eyebrows slightly furrowed as she slowly pulled away. Her now concerning face was only inches from mine.
"Daisy, are you alright, love?" She spoke.
I just looked at her with broken eyes as Pol quickly walked over with excitement written over her face.
Ada's eye traveled from mine to Pol's, her face suddenly lighting up with glee once again.
They embraced and Pol welcomed them in.
"Arthur, get up and go fetch you sister and brother-in-law some chairs!" Pol exclaimed. Arthur did as he was told as I stood with my hand on the door, staring out into the cold winters night.
I couldn't believe what was happening. Should I be happy or angry or... or... or what?
"Close the fucking door, now will you, Daisy? It's getting as cold as the Poles in here." John bickered.
Esme slapped his arm as I slowly closed the door.
"Uhm, pardon me for a moment, I just need to go and grab my cigarettes from my bedroom." I spoke. I was ignored, though. Everyone was focused on Ada and Freddie. Even Alfie who was introducing himself and making small talk with Freddie.
I walked slowly up the stairs and to my room. I grabbed my cigarettes and sat on my unmade bed looking at the still burning fire.
I put my hands over my eyes and sighed. I need a minute or two to just relax.
I've spent most of this week crying and sleeping. I didn't want anymore.
Taking a deep breathe, I made my way back downstairs and into my seat.
Everyone was chatting.
I put a single cigarette in my mouth, grabbed a candle from the table and lit it.
"Hey, can I have one? Talking to all these people at once is stressing me out." Esme says.
I nod and slide the pack to her.
Tommy looked at me, a cigarette hanging from his lips.
"Put your fucking cigarette out, Daisy. You're at the dining table. Have some respect." He snarled.
"Why? You have one from your god damn mouth, Tommy. Don't be telling me to put mine out, eh."
"You're a lady. I'm a man. You listen to me. That's how it goes." Everyone, thank the lord, was still focused on their own conversations and not on Tommy and I's.
"Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I'm obligated to follow along with the commands of a man. I am mine own person, so I will make my own decisions. I'm tired of you always telling me what to fucking do. You're disgusting, Thomas Shelby."
I looked at me furiously as Alfie stood up and got everyone's attention.
"I'm afraid I have to go and attend to some business. Thank you all for letting me accompany you in this fine dining. Ada, Freddie, it was a pleasure making acquaintances with you. Thomas. I will see you next Monday."
Everyone spoke to say goodbye.
"Let me walk you out, please." I stood up and glared at Tommy.
I walked him outside and he looked at me with a gleam in his eye.
"Thank you. For everything, Alfie. You a wonderful chef might I say. I'm sorry about those two barging in in the middle of supper. It was a surprise to everyone." I smile slightly.
"Oh, they were quite nice people. I didn't mind."
"Well, yes. I suppose so."
I looked at my feet and stood there waiting for him to say something. Anything.
My face was once again yanked up, but this time into a passionate kiss, that seemed everlasting.
He kept a hand on my cheek and the other on the small of my back. I swept mine around his neck and stood on the tips of my toes to try and reach his height. I stumbled as he pulled me closer, our warm bodies leaving no open space between them. I never wanted this to end.
Our lips separated and he smirked.
"I want you to meet me at my company tomorrow. Maybe I'll show you around the distillery. Or something else." He says in a seductive voice as he pulls me in for a quick kiss.
I nod and bite my lip.
He lets go of me and starts walking away.
"I will wait for you tomorrow. At dusk, love."
"I'll be there!" I spoke and wait until he reaches the end of the street to jump up and down with laughter.
I'm in love.
