Doomsday, Part 2 (10th x Rose)

For those who want angst but in words instead of on the screen, part 2...

He appeared in front of her, as she had expected, but he didn't look like him. He seemed faded, like he could disappear anytime, and he stood rather stiffly. It's been so long since she saw him, and she didn't know what to say. Maybe she could ask how he was, or whether he was on his way, or-

"Where are you?"

That was probably an option too. It was a good choice, though, because she sensed that the Doctor wasn't where he was supposed to be. She stood there anxiously, waiting for the answer she already knew.

"Inside the TARDIS," he replied with a monotonous voice, but she knew he was trying to sound more cheerful.

"There's one tiny little gap in the Universe left, just about to close, and it takes a lot of power to send this projection. I'm in orbit around a super nova."

"Must be pretty," she thought. She could just imagine him in the TARDIS, standing as he was right now. The TARDIS would be floating there in the deep ocean of space, around a red, purplish star, and she wanted to be there with him to admire it, but she can't.

"I'm burning up a sun," he said, and Rose felt her heart skip a beat. It was a little extreme, but maybe he was doing all this to take her back to him. Well, he would do it, wouldn't he?

"Just to say goodbye."

The tiny bit of hope she seemed to hang on to just a second ago disappeared immediately. It's true then, what Pete and the others had said at Torchwood. He could never come back, ever.

She didn't know what to feel, and who knows how the Doctor is feeling. How was he even coping with losing her, and how long has it been for him since he lost her? So many questions were racing through her head, but before she would ask them all, she wanted to solve a little problem that she was experiencing.

"You look like a ghost."

The Doctor's eyes widened in realisation.

"Hold on."

He whipped out his blue-tipped sonic screwdriver and pointed to the TARDIS console, which Rose couldn't see but guessed that he did. His image solidified and it was as though he had really came over to the world she was in.

She walked closer to him and reached out to touch his face, but realised that she might not feel it, so before she did, she asked, "Can I?"

He shook his head, "I'm still just an image. No touch."

"Can't you come through properly?"

"The whole thing would fracture. Two universes would collapse."

"So?"

The Doctor forced a smile, seeming proud of what Rose had become, but deep inside, he knew, and she knew too, there was no way to get her. She turned away for a second, and silence fell between the two. In an attempt to break the silence, he changed the subject.

"Where are we?" he asked, "Where did the gap come out?"

"We're in Norway," Rose answered right away, silently glad their conversation managed to continue. Knowing him, they wouldn't have much time with each other, and she was taking every chance she could get to listen to him for the last time.

"Norway. Right."

"About fifty miles out of Burgen. It's called," she took a deep breath, trying to keep her cool, "'Dårlig Ulv Stranden'."

"Dalek?"

"Dårlig," she felt a little happier, only then realizing how similar it sounded to the Doctor's worst enemy.

"It's Norwegian for bad."

The Doctor stared at her blankly.

"This translates as Bad Wolf Bay."

He laughed, memories of the phrase 'Bad Wolf' flooding both their minds. She laughed too, and it felt like a bit of a relief. It was like the old times, where they were just sitting around the TARDIS, chatting about their recent adventure or where they would head off to next.

'Old times', she thought to herself. There was never gonna be new times. All the adventures she had with him, she was never going on another ever again. No more past, no more future, no more everywhere in the universe. It was just her, in the present, on Earth, and him, all of time and space, but different universe. They would never be together again, ever.

This realisation made her heart shatter into bits. It was then that she started to panic a little, with the little time she's got until the sun burns out completely, and he'll be gone forever.

"How long have we got?" her voice became higher, for her vision started to blur.

He noticed, and spoke in an almost inaudible voice, "About two minutes."

She brushed her hair away from her face, forcing another smile. It was one of those moments where you were given a chance to say whatever you wanted, but everything has been wiped from your mind.

"I can't think of what to say!"

He laughed again, and she did too, but it was again, forced. He didn't want to see her like this, he never wanted this to happen, but it did. He felt so useless.

Hoping to keep the conversation going as she couldn't, the Doctor looked into the distance, seeing three figures, all of whom he recognized.

"You've still got Mister Mickey, then?"

"There's five of us now," Rose replied, calming down a little, "Mum, Dad, Mickey," she paused briefly, "and the baby."

His hearts froze. He knew it was technically improbable but if it happened...no, it's not possible, but what if?

"You're not..." There was an obvious hint of fear in his voice.

She shook her head, "No. It's Mum."

She laughed a little, noticing how the Doctor's face just showed his anxiousness. He smiled in relief.

"She's three months gone. More Tylers on the way."

He took one last look at the three of them, then returned to Rose, wondering how she was holding up ever since that day.

"And what about you? Are you-"

"Yeah, I'm back working in the shop," She joked, but he didn't catch it.

"Oh," the Doctor nodded in acknowledgment, seeming to hope that Rose might have gotten a better job, "Good for you."

She rolled her eyes, "Shut up. No, I'm not. There's still a Torchwood on this planet. It's open for business. I think I know a thing or two about aliens."

He beamed, smiling brightly at her.

"Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth."

He was so proud of her, it was showing in his eyes. All the adventures she has had with him has found a way to pay off for her, and he was proud. Rose has made him proud, and she looked at him, knowing that he would be.

"You're dead," he said abruptly, changing the subject once more, "Officially, back home."

"So many people died that day and you've gone missing. You're on a list of the dead."

She started to let her tears go, knowing that their time was running shorter and shorter until there would be none left. The sand in the hourglass has almost all spilled into the bottom half. She wiped them away, not trying to stop. He noticed, and tried to encourage her.

"Here you are, living a life day after day. The one adventure I can never have."

She saw the hint of sadness in his eyes. He knows as well, their conversation was ending. She sobbed loudly, there was no point in holding it back anymore.

"Am I ever going to see you again?"

She covered her eyes with her hand to wipe off the tears, looking back with a clearer view of him.

His expression didn't change, the hint of sadness masked by the forced happiness, "You can't."

Her voice started to break, "What're you going to do?"

"Oh, I've got the TARDIS," he replied, "Same old life, last of the Time Lords."

"On your own," she sniffed, clearly breaking down, and he nodded.

There was nothing left to say. Rose knew that if she didn't tell him now, she would never ever get the chance to tell him again. All those times in the past, where they were enjoying themselves, she grew closer to him, from one regeneration to the next, and she didn't tell him. She had all the time in the world and she didn't say it, and she hated herself. Right now, it was the last time she was ever going to see him, she wasn't going to hold back.

"I..." she started, still searching for the courage to admit it. She lowered her head, readying herself once more, despite the tears on her face. A surge of courage rushed through her as she lifted her head and stared into his brown eyes. She brushed away her hair again, and took in a deep breath.

"I love you."

He stood there for a moment, processing her words. His expression didn't change, but it seemed to stab him in both hearts. He didn't know what to feel. Should he feel glad because he felt the same towards her, or devastated because after this, they'll never see each other ever again? There was no point in admitting it to her when they can never be together, but he couldn't let those words never be spoken.

They've been through so much, and Rose, his Rose, has reached the highest levels of friendships. She was there from the beginning he was alone, helped him through the darkest times. She was there to save Earth and all of time and space with him. She was there when he needed her most, even though she might not have realised. He had to let her know.

Rose's heart started to beat faster, her eyes filled with tears that hadn't fallen yet. She finally said it after so long, and was awaiting a response. The tears threatened to spill out of her eyes, not knowing how he would respond.

"Quite right, too," he began, hearts pounding in both their chests.

"And I suppose," he continued, and Rose thought his eyes might have gone a little red.

"If it's one last chance to say it..."

He was almost there. Rose's pulse increased sharply, she knew his has as well, especially with two hearts instead of one. Time was running out, and Rose was begging for it not to, she needed to hear him one last time, and hear him say it back. She didn't want him to leave her, she didn't want him to go...

"Rose Tyler-"

And her name was the last thing she heard leave his mouth.
