Raising Hell Part 2

Charlotte pulled at the curls in her long hair, and at the tight dress as she walked up to the club's entrance with Clary and Jace. This was not her element, standing in line next to drunken idiots or idiots who were waiting to get drunk.

"Alec and Izzy are securing the perimeter." Jace informs the girls. Charlotte kept to her own while the shadowhunters discussed business. The only reason she was there with them, she knew, was because they couldn't trust anyone else around her. 'Protect the mundanes', she knew Jace would say.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Clary asks him. "Last time we were here, this place was crawling with vampires." The idea made Charlotte shudder, multiple vampires around her again. Perhaps she had better chances with Simon back at home. Surely her mom would be wondering where she was by now. Definitely not at a club that is for sure.

Jace looks to his right down at  the mundane who froze in her steps. "Relax all Downworlders hang out here. We just came on vampire night." He says out loud, not to direct it to the girl he could tell was scared.

"Right. And when is this all gonna sound normal to me?"

"I don't know." Jace replies to Clary with a light hearted tone. Charlotte turned her head seeing the siblings coming up towards them, Alec as if ready to go home at once.

"All clear." He tells Jace.

Izzy joins arms with Clary and beckons Charlotte over with her finger. Charlotte walked the few steps next to the brunette shadowhunter with all her power so she would not fall in the heels. "Better be worth it tonight. I hate this." She tells Izzy.

"Trust me, I bet this night will be eventful." She says smiling.

"Still does not sound good."

"Do you think red's my color?" Izzy then asks, gesturing to the red necklace on her neck. When Charlotte saw the necklace, all she could remember is Camille. Her red dress and the face she made when she threatened her. The necklace was a beautiful piece of jewelry as if meant for Izzy.

"Iz, with a body like yours everything's your color." Clary answers.

"Good point. Damn I make this necklace look so good."

"Probably better than the leech." Charlotte comments causing Izzy to chuckle.  Camille didn't look like she could love anything near her. After seeing what she did to her brother, she couldn't see this woman in any positive light, unless it was daylight.

"Charlie." She could hear around her. None of the shadowhunters to her right were looking in her direction. Alec and Izzy quarreled like siblings should and Clary and Jace minded their business towards the line. "Charlotte."

Charlotte looked around her as she walked slowly forward with the rest of them closer to the entrance. Whispers filled her ears and her eyes could only see a fancy suit accompanied by cold eyes. She gasped seeing the figure behind her.

"Charlie." Another voice repeated, louder and more confused. Charlotte turned back to see Clary with a concerned look on her face. Clary never saw her friend look so scared before. She knew it wasn't good to drag her friend into her mess, but not only was it safer for her but Clary needed Charlotte by her side. "Are you okay?"

"Come on, mundie." Jace says as the shadowhunters kept going. Charlotte silently rushed inside with Clary on her tail.

"Charlie, is something wrong? You can tell me. I know you're uncomfortable, it won't be long." Clary continued.

"I'm fine, Clary. Really. Don't worry." She assures her best friend.

Alec and Izzy branch off as Charlotte accompanies Jace and Clary towards the warlock. She stands closer behind the two shadowhunters as Jace calls Magnus' attention.

Magnus stands in all his glory as he stands in front of the shadowhunters and the girl behind them. "Clary Fairchild. You've grown into a beautiful young woman."

"Just like the club." Charlotte mutters, rolling her eyes.

"And who are you?" He asks pointing to Charlotte who stood behind Jace. Charlotte came from behind him and tried to stand tall like her friend. "Ah, from Pandemonium. You are Clary's friend, the unknowing mundane."

"And you're the warlock who stole my friend's memories. We all have our roles to play."

"Maybe not so unknowing. And it was at her mother's request. She knew the risk." Magnus turns towards Jace with disdain on his face. "Show me the jewelry, Shadowhunter."

Jace takes the necklace and holds it up for Magnus to see. As Magnus tries to reach for it, Jace pulls back.

"Ooh. Give Clary back her memories, and you get the jewelry."

"I have to confirm its authenticity." Jace takes a second to think before handing it over begrudgingly.

Magnus observes the necklace and then utters a few words, "Amor verus numquam moritur. True love cannot die. Oh, how I've missed this jewel."

"Well it's very pretty for someone who deserves it." Charlotte quips.

"Now it's your turn. Pay up."

"I wish I could retrieve your memories, but I no longer have them."

"What? Where are they?"

"Then give the necklace back. Not a fair exchange at all." Charlotte yells.

"I fed them to a memory demon for safekeeping."

"So can't this memory demon be nice and throw them up or something?" Charlotte asks trying to solve the situation at hand.

Jace grows more angry with the warlock in front of him. "Why the hell would you do that?"

Magnus tries to explain, "To protect Clary and the Cup. If Valentine ever captured me, he could torture Clary's memories out of me. Just like he tortured Dot."

"Tortured?" Clary looks dazed thinking about the word and its connection to Dot. "Wait, is Dot okay?"

"You don't know? Dot is dead." Charlotte holds onto Clary as she breaths heavily.

"What? How do you know?"

"I can't feel her magic anymore."

"Well maybe that means she's too far away. Can not feeling her magic really mean she's gone?" Charlotte wonders.

"Valentine killed her because she would not betray your mother." Magnus explains to the girls. "Come with me, Clary." Magnus offers the red head. "My lair can offer you protection no shadowhunter ever could." He continues as he gives Jace a side eye.

Jace scoffs at the warlock. "No!" Clary rejects. "No I'm not going anywhere with you."

"Don't be a fool. Your mother would want you to live."

"Then help me get my memories back from whatever demon you gave them to."

"Yeah, like I said!" Charlotte says throwing up her hands. "Isn't it more dangerous the longer we sit here and argue like children?"

"Valentine is hunting you too. And being around Clary means you mundane are hunted too. Every moment we're outside my lair's protection is a moment Valentine gets closer to finding us." Magnus turns suddenly and moves his hands with such grace with light emitting from them. "Come with me." Clary looks to Jace who shook his head and then to Charlotte who knew whatever she wanted, she'd be there for her. She's been through the demons and vampires, a warlock's lair wouldn't hurt. "I won't offer again."

"No. No, I won't hide from my problems and neither should you."

"Look out!" A voice yells as an arrow flies past the group and into the chest of a man walking towards them.

Alec comes running past to grab the arrow from the man. Charlotte looked down at the dead man and would not let her gaze pass from his wound. The blood soaked his maroon shirt and he lay still.

"Magnus wait!" Clary yells for Magnus who was ready to retreat to his portal. "You're my only hope."

"Valentine found us. I warned your mother this might happen." Without another word Magnus retreated into the portal leaving Clary behind.

"The area's secure. Looks like he was the only assassin." Izzy tells Jace. She looks towards the body to see the mundane close to it, her back facing the group. She could only begin to guess how she was feeling, her mundane life being uprooted.

"He has a circle rune on the base of his neck." Alec adds on. He looks up at the girl in front of the body. His eyebrows furrow in confusion as her eyes were trained on the body of the circle member. "Charlie." He called out at the girl who was acting strange. She shook her head and blinked suddenly and looked to the boy.

"Yeah?"

"Let's go, mundane." He just says as he stands to walk with the rest of the shadowhunters. Charlotte looks back before leaning down to the body.

"Charlie, come on." Clary gasps out. She stands and runs up to Clary as the two girls catch up to the rest of them, one of the girls with a blood covered finger.

As they escaped from door 40, Charlotte held onto Clary who seemed to not be with it. "Are you okay, Clary?"

"Jace." Izzy calls for Jace. He turns back to see Clary in a daze and not rushing like the rest of them.

"Clary we have to move."

"I'm catching my breath."

"Yeah take a second, Clary. She's not like you guys. I don't know about you, but this isn't normal for us." Charlotte bites at the blonde.

"You know what? This is great." Alec yells sarcastically. "And not only did Magnus not get the girl her memories back, he took the necklace. This is fantastic-"

"Alec, the girl- her name is Clary and I highly suggest keeping your voice down."

"Are they going to sit here and fight while we were being rushed only 2 seconds ago?" Charlotte mutters with a roll of her eyes.

"Why? What are you afraid I'm gonna upset her? We have risked our lives again and again for this girl, and where has it gotten us? All right? Nowhere. We've got no closer to getting the Mortal Cup. And we've lost the Institute's necklace."

"Hey, I am right here. I don't care about your damn jewelry. I'm sorry you're gonna look bad in front of your bosses, okay? But my mother is still missing and my last chance at finding her just disappeared into thin air."

"Clary, it's gonna be fine." Jace tries to reassure her.

"No, it's not! People are dying because of me. And Magnus? Magnus will never come out of hiding again while Valentine is still after him. We're never going to find him. And I will... I will never get my memories back." She yells as she throws something down, only to be caught by Jace.

"What's that?" Charlotte asks her friend.

"You give up way too easily." Jace comments as he looks at the object. He walks away as the two girls stare confused.

"What is he doing?" Clary asks.

"He's tracking Magnus. Be quiet and keep your distance." Clary glares at Alec while his sister tries to explain.

"The button belonged to Magnus. Jace can pinpoint the location using that."

"So we sat here crying and yelling all this time just for this? Should have started complaining to start with." Charlotte comments.

"No. The signal's not strong enough. Magnus must be blocking the track. Let's do this, Alec."

"Do what?"

"Parabatai tracking."

"Of course they are."

"It seems very awkward." Charlotte whispers.

"When parabatai track, their power grows stronger. Jace and Alec are gonna track Magnus together."

"That's a lot of staring." Charlotte continues to whisper.

"Yeah this whole parabatai thing seems oddly intimate if you ask me." Clary says in agreement.

Izzy sighs, "You don't know the half of it."

Jace then shakes his head as the bond breaks and he says, "Got him."

--

Finding Magnus' location was the least of their problems. As they walked inside the darkened area, the shadowhunters all had their weapons drawn.

"Guess I'll die then." Charlotte mumbles. Clary sighs with a small smile and makes sure her friend was between them and whatever danger could be around. Charlotte knew she didn't belong with them, and was still shocked that she was.

"Magnus' lair is right behind that fence." Jace informs the group.

"Magnus lives in a warehouse?" Clary asks in shock.

"Not exactly. Warlock glamour."

Izzy stops them, putting her hand up. "Something's wrong. It's far too easy to get this close."

"His protective wards must be down."

"After all his spiel about hiding, that doesn't seem good then."

"You two." Clary and Charlotte turn their heads to look up at Alec. "Don't get in the way."

"Wouldn't dream of it." Charlotte replies.

A man grunts and falls with a sword slicing through him. "Oh god! Valentine found Magnus." The shadowhunters and Charlotte rush forward to the lair. Charlotte still hated the run and hated the fact that her life could be in danger at any moment with only so much help.

Charlotte stays to Clary's side, hopeful her best friend would be able to protect her when she was defenseless.

"Daddy." A young girl came forward to the dead man on the ground. Another larger man came up behind her with a long sword in hand ready to strike.

"Watch out!" Clary yells out as she strikes the man. The young girl runs up behind Clary and next to Charlotte.

"Clary Fairchild."

"Kick his ass, Clary." Charlotte says as she holds onto the young warlock child.

"Valentine will be so pleased to meet you." The man is about to walk forward when Izzy's whip wraps around him and Jace finishes the attack.

Clary looks up to Jace and says, "Thanks for that."

"I had total faith in you Clary." Charlotte says with a smile and pats her shoulder. The young girl clutched Charlotte's arm.

Izzy approaches the girls stepping past the bodies. "Stick close. It's safest if we stay together."

"It's okay we won't leave you alone. I promise." Clary tells the girl who also stayed close to the young shadowhunter.

As the girls showed up into the main area, Clary called for Magnus. The young girl runs up to hug him as he faces her.

"Go join the others my dear. This is no place for a little girl. Go." He turns to see the mundane still and looked at Clary with surprise. "And this is no place for a mundane. Why did you bring her? Did you want your friend to get hurt?"

"Safer with her than anybody else. Ask you friend, Camille." Charlotte bites back. She didn't know if the two still kept contact and didn't care. There was something up with her and she blamed the woman who kidnapped her and her brother. "I'm gonna stay with Isabelle." She tells Clary as she and Magnus kept going forward to speak.

"Are you alright, Charlie? I know this might seem like a lot to a mundane."

Charlotte frowned. "Well I could have left with Simon but who knows where that would have left me. I'm feeling like crap, and I'm disoriented."

"Hold tight everyone, we're about to move."

--

Simon paced his dim lit room trying to call Clary and his sister. "Hey it's Clary. Leave a message."

"Hey it's me. I just... I want to flat out say I'm sorry. And if Charlie's with you right now, tell her I'm sorry too. I feel like crap for leaving you two with Jace and those guys. And tell Charlotte that I may have told mom she's with her boyfriend. I panicked, she freaked. So Charlotte may have some calls to answer. I don't know. Ever since we ditched those vampires, I've been feeling like crap today. It's... these waves... they hit me and I can't think straight. I don't know it's probably just the flu."

He paused thinking about his sister and Clary being with the shadowhunters and whatever could be happening to their trio. He wondered if the same things were happening to Charlotte or if he was just going crazy. "Anyway, Clary you... you're the last person I'd ever want to leave in this world. I'm so, so sorry. Call me back. Let me know you and Charlie are okay. Bye."

--

"Much better." Magnus states looking at the view from his place.

"Holy s- that view. My god!" Charlie gasps out. "This place must have cost a fortune."

"Thank you." He says. He looks down at his furniture and scoffs. "Ugh it's inevitable. After each move, I get the itch to redecorate. Normally, I love a dirty lair, but this one is just sloppy."

"If you got it, spend it. Good for you." Charlotte chuckles out looking at everything he had. It was glorious, filled with abstract items.

"I believe in payment in services rendered." Magnus tells Izzy as he pulls out the ruby necklace. "Thank you for defending the warlocks."

"I couldn't."

"Oh but you could and you should." He goes behind her to lay the necklace on her and clasp it. "The Lightwoods have been wearing this for years. Besides, this would look silly on your brother."

Charlotte turns to see Clary jump up to face Magnus. "Okay so how do we summon the memory demon?"

"Are you certain? Summoning such a powerful demon could be lethal."

"I'll do anything to save my mother."

Charlotte stands next to Clary with a concerned look. "Are you sure about this? I know it's for your mom, but don't risk your life. She wouldn't want that."

"I'm sure, Charlie." Clary tells her before turning back to Magnus. "Where is the demon?"

"Okay. Pretty boy get your team ready." Magnus says, pointing towards Jace and Alec.

"You know what to do." Jace says under his breath as he moves forward.

Magnus stops Jace in his tracks. "I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to you." He then says pointing to Alec.

"Way to assume blondie." Charlotte smiled at the offended shadowhunter.

"Come with me." As Magnus and Clary retreated into another room, Charlotte sat on the couch trying to calm herself through everything that happened this night. She cursed herself remembering she left her phone at the Institute.

Alec stood with Izzy as she observed at the mundane who stared into space. "She doesn't seem to be doing so well, Alec."

"Probably some mundane illness. She's not our problem." Alec comments without looking up from his arrows. He didn't want to mention her strange actions as she stood over him and the circle member at the club. It must have been the shock of what she saw, he thought to himself. Him and his siblings were used to things like this in the shadow world.

Charlotte felt a tap on her shoulder to see the warlock standing above her. "What?" He didn't say a word but then held out something to her. Charlotte gasps lightly as she sees her book she forgot at the club when she first met him.

"A peace offering. It's not often I see a mundane so entranced in our world and stay for so long." He handed her the book and smiled at how she lit up like a child on Christmas morning.

"Well, offer accepted. Thank you for returning what was mine." She flipped through her book to find her spot until she jumped hearing the screams of Clary. "What the hell is that?" She yells to the three experienced in the shadow world.

"Jace is preparing Clary." Izzy explains.

"By what? Torturing her?"

"He's drawing a rune on her."

"This will take more than what a mundane can handle. I'm afraid you'll have to sit and watch." Magnus tells her.

"Well if it means I don't have to face a demon, I think I'm good. I've had my fill of seeing shadowhunters, warlocks, and vampires. Oh my!" She mocks.

The screaming stopped and Charlotte felt more calm. "Now Clary just needs to draw the pentagram so I can summon the demon."

"I never thought that'd be something I'd hear and think was real."

--

"Jocelyn was right, your artistry is beyond compare." Magnus compliments Clary as she gets off the floor with chalk on her fingers. Charlotte pats her shoulder and side hugs her.

"That's my girl. Always the artist. Da Vinci wishes he had your talents."

"I don't know about that." Clary says with a shy smile as she removes herself from Charlotte's grasp.

"Oh the only person I've known who could draw as well was Michelangelo, who was excellent in bed, I might add." Magnus tells the group.

"You're telling me you knew Michelangelo and know what he's like in bed? That's awesome." Charlotte comments with a laugh along with Izzy.

"Okay. We're ready." He says as he rolls up his sleeves. "You might want to back away and brace yourself." Magnus adds to Charlotte with a wink.

"Everyone take your rightful place on the pentagram." The shadowhunters and the warlock took their positions around the pentagram as Magnus continued to explain. "We must initiate a bond. Once this bond is sealed, it cannot be broken until the demon retreats. No matter what happens we must not let go of each other's hands."

Some intense hand holding, Charlotte thought to herself as they all took their time to grab hands. This had to work, they had to get Clary's memories or this was for nothing.

"You guys are pathetic." Izzy tells the group with a sly smile. Charlotte laughs at her boldness.

"Yeah, let's get this demon summoning on!"

Izzy finished the bond between the five of them and Magnus continued to explain the ritual. "I will lead the ceremony, and you all must do exactly as I say. The demon's name is Valak. And at some point, he will ask for payment in exchange for Clary's memories."

"What do you mean? What kind of payment?"

"We will see."

"Well hopefully it's not a human sacrifice. Sorry guys I don't feel like dying." Charlotte comments.

Magnus smirks at the young girl before turning back to the shadowhunters. "Let us begin." Magnus begins chanting in Chthonian as Izzy's necklace pulses.

Smoke came from the pentagram and light emitted from the ground. "Valak is among us. Do not break the bond!"

"Hold on!" Jace yells to Clary.

"I'm trying."

Charlotte watched as the people around her held on for dear life feeling as useless as ever. She was just a mundane in a world she didn't belong in.

"It is time. The demon demands is payment."

"What does it want?"

"We must each relinquish a beloved memory of the one we love the most." One by one a memory was taken from the shadowhunters. Charlotte thought of what could have been taken from her. A memory with her brother maybe?

"No, it's not true! The demon deceived me!" Alec cries out while trying to rip his hand from Jace when his memory was of Jace.

"Do not break the bond!"

"Alec its okay!"

"No!"

"Alec!" Charlotte watched in horror as the chaos ensued. The demon pushed back everyone as Charlotte fell back into the wall between Izzy and Clary. She pressed herself to the wall and remembered when she felt so small when Camille came towards her and when the shapeshifting demon attacked her and Clary. The demon was so close to them in the enclosed space, she felt the walls closing in.

"I cannot contain the demon much longer!" Magnus tells them through his straining effort with magic.

Charlotte felt no more useful seeing Jace get sucked up by the demon and Izzy try to pull him back. "Grab him!"

"Hold on!" The Lightwoods try to hold him down and away from the demon's grasp.

"The demon is growing stronger!"

"He's slipping!"

"Clary! Help us!" Izzy calls out for Clary.

Clary ignites her sword as Magnus instantly speaks to her, "Clary, if you kill the demon, your memories will be lost forever!"

"Help us!"

Clary rushes forward and stabs the demon with her might. The demon screeches and with an explosion is destroyed. Jace lay on the ground still, with the three shadowhunters above him and worrying for him.

"Is he going to be alright?" Clary asks.

"I don't know." Magnus answers honestly. "Does he normally just lay like that without moving?"

"Seriously? He almost died!" Charlotte says freaking out. She finally moved herself from against the wall and towards the group. "Is he breathing?" Her wide eyes went around the room from the unconscious shadowhunter to her best friend and to the handsome warlock.

"Get up. Jace."

"Jace."

Jace then violently gasps for air and coughs. Breathing heavily, Jace tells them, "I'm alright, I'm alright. I'm just getting my second wind."

Charlotte inhaled and closed her eyes. She had to constantly remind herself that this wasn't her world. As much as she wanted to pretend it was she has no place there except being a liability. She felt herself move back away from Clary as her feet were moving with a mind of their own. She walked past Alec who was still shaken up about what happened. In the other room she sat on the couch and took off her glasses. She felt ridiculous for feeling this way and sitting here like an idiot.

"Overwhelmed?" She hears someone ask. She opens her eyes slowly, annoyed by her tranquility being disturbed. There, the warlock stood with an amused look on his face.

"That easy to see?" She asks back.

"You're very brave for being with Clary now, I can only imagine what you've seen so far to not be frightened by a higher demon." Charlotte sighed and slumped down on the couch.

"I feel useless, that's what I am." She then grimaces and puts her glasses back on. "And I'm totally being up front with a stranger. This isn't me."

"Except when you yell at a stranger it seems." He jokes with the girl as he takes a seat. He looked even more amused, that made Charlotte glare. She didn't want him joking at her self deprecating statements.

"You stole my stuff. I wasn't going to be cute. But this isn't my world. Clary is meant for this. Slaying demons and being badass. This," Charlotte gestures to her outfit, "is not me."

"Maybe you're meant for something else then." Charlotte pictured what her brother was doing now. Worrying at home, calling both Clary and her probably. She wondered how long she would actually stay with Clary and the shadowhunters.

"Come on, Charlie." Charlotte turned her head to see Clary and the rest of the shadowhunters ready to go.

"Oh okay." She turns back to Magnus as he sat nonchalantly. "Thanks for my book."

--

Charlotte turned the pages as she tried focusing on the words. Everything to her just seemed fuzzy. She couldn't get everything off her mind. It was like a tornado was raging and whipping around her memories and her state of mind.

She couldn't let this happen. She had to stay by Clary's side. After listening to the calls from Simon including his panicked explanation to their mom about where Charlotte was she concluded that he truly was her idiot brother. A boyfriend was the worst thing he could come up with. It made her feel mundane though, thinking about simple things like sneaking out from home, sleeping over, and having relationships with people.

Charlotte went through the halls where Clary was staying. Knocking on the door, she slightly peaked in.

"Clary." She whispers. Clary sat on her bed with a disheartened look on her face. "What's wrong?"

"It's nothing. I was just talking to Jace." Clary tells her.

"You've gotten really close to him." Charlotte states. Clary sighs and lays down on the bed.

"I know."

"Well I'm not saying it like a bad thing." Charlotte drops onto the bed next to her and touches her hand. A light touch to signify her care. She grasped it just enough to bring attention to her. "You could do much worse. He practically adores you." She herself sighed and flopped her head onto the pillow next to Clary.

Clary turns to face Charlotte, the two girls reminiscing about the old days of school. Just two teenage girls trying to be ready for what they face next.

"Thank you for being here with me. I really need you. Everything has changed around me. I feel like I can't trust anybody."

"You can trust me, Clary. It's going to take a lot more than some vampires and demons to chase me away." The girls laugh as Charlotte feels herself sink into the bed and it's comfort.

"The warlock, Magnus Bane. He told me I can trust no one." Charlotte frowned seeing that her friend was being given seeds of doubt, even if it was in the form of advice. She was sure Magnus meant well but still wanted to be there for her friend through it all. Sometimes trust was needed even in a complete stranger, or a best friend. Without trust, people can never feel safe. Charlotte knew she could feel safe with Clary.

"Well maybe he's wrong this time." The handsome warlock was beguiling with his charming eyes and smile. It was easy to fall prey to the cliche Charlotte would read in her novels. Clary smiled lightly at her friend who easily got lost in thoughts and dreams. She felt herself yawn and shook her head.

"I'm going to take off my jewelry. Then we can sleep. Just like we used to on a Friday night." Charlotte nodded sleepily as she was swept into her thoughts that she couldn't share with Clary, though a part of her pleaded with herself to do so.

"Yeah," Charlotte yawned out, "why would the first thing that came out of Simon's mouth is I was at a boyfriends house. My mother is going to kill me." Clary laughed like they would any normal night if they were home.

Clary jumps up from the bed and walks over to the dresser, staring at her reflection. She takes off her rings and bracelets being left with her necklace. She clutched onto the purple stone and watched as it started to glow. Closing her eyes, Clary saw images of her mom and Valentine standing over her.

Charlotte, half asleep, heard her friend gasp in shock repeatedly. "Clary?" She calls out. Clary rushes to the bed, throwing the necklace down at Charlotte's feet. "What happened?" Charlotte asks Clary with urgency. "What did you see?"

"My mom."
