02 || hello there, meet the heroes!
"holy shit! can it get any colder in here?"
"why are you in here?" wonwoo sighed. wonwoo glanced at the the shivering figure lingering at his bedroom door, rolling his eyes when he realized that seungkwan wasn't leaving any time soon. setting his book on the bed next to him, wonwoo sat up and stared directly at seungkwan. "are you going to answer my question or not?"
"no need to be so rude," muttered seungkwan with an eyeroll. seungkwan was one of the feistier interns they had interning at their organization's base this summer. in fact, seungkwan had to be one of the most sassiest interns they'd ever had apart from wonwoo who was once just an intern.
wonwoo remembered his first time at the base like it was yesterday. tramatic memories like that one really had a tendancy to linger in his mind. he recalled everything from that day, down to the part where he ended up getting caught fire during a ride-along with one of the senior heroes at the time.
years later, wonwoo was now one of the senior heroes on site with interns of his own to watch over. well technically they weren't his per say, but seungcheol always scolded him whenever he tried to ignore seungkwan and the other intern, vernon, existed so he had to at least acknowledge their existences.
that didn't mean he had to like them though, because he didn't.
seungkwan was just so annoying and nosy. vernon? well vernon wasn't too bad because he was pretty quiet, but having to parent them both was still frustrating. it was like fatherhood, minus the part where wonwoo actually was their father.
"captain coups wanted someone to get you for breakfast, but vernon was busy gaming and joshua is the one cooking. mingyu and I played rock paper scissors and unfortunately I lost-"
"why are you telling me all this?" seungkwan furrowed his eyebrows at the cold superhero whose demeanor perfectly matched his body temperature. what bothered seungkwan the most was the way wonwoo looked at him. his eyes were cold, almost inhuman. seungkwan had been at the hero base for almost two weeks now and yet he had barely seen anything that would indicate that wonwoo was anything close to human.
"you asked why I'm in here, so I'm explaining. honestly who put a stick up your ass today? I'm getting out of here before I freeze to death, come to breakfast or don't." seungkwan gave up being polite to the senior hero. he turned his back immediately, not caring enough to hear the smartass retort he was sure would cone out of wonwoo's mouth.
wonwoo debated skipping breakfast for a moment before opting out of that idea. last time he skipped a meal, seungcheol and joshua lectured him about the importance of sustaining oneself and what-not. it was not worth the trouble at all.
the cold superhero sighed before leaving his safe haven, stepping out into the hallway outside his bedroom and feeling the warm air penetrate the surface of his skin. the cold never really bothered him, but it did leave him hypersensitive to temperature shifts. on the bright side, his colder than average body temperature meant he didn't sweat like crazy during the summer.
wonwoo walked along the hallway, passing by the picture frames hung on the wall before passing by jun's bedroom which was right next to his. across from jun's bedroom was mingyu's, though wonwoo noted that mingyu's room was already empty. out of the trio, mingyu always did enjoy waking up at the crack of dawn to go on his morning jogs. he was always the first to go to bed too every night.
following the hallway, wonwoo reached the lounge where vernon and seungkwan were seated on the red couch in the center of the room. presumably they had already eaten, since the two were busy chatting with one another. well seungkwan was doing most of the talking while vernon nodded his head occasionally to show he was listening. seungkwan turned his head to glance at wonwoo before going back to whisper something to vernon.
wonwoo didn't care though. who cared what they thought about him? the two interns were only around for the summer anyways. wonwoo continued to tell himself he didn't care as he walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the kitchen island right next to mingyu.
"I hate the interns." wonwoo spoke with a groan as joshua placed down a mug of coffee in front of him. joshua shook his head with a slight smile before turning to grab a plate for wonwoo from one of the many cabinets hanging above him.
"I knew he was going to say that! I predicted it this morning." jun piped up just as he entered the hero kitchen, grabbing a plate that joshua was just about to drop and handing it to the older hero with grace. while joshua kindly thanks him, mingyu rolled his eyes with annoyance.
"he says it all the time. a monkey could predict he'd say it again." mingyu scoffed. with a mischevious smirk on his face that was hard to hide, mingyu used his left hand to generate electricity that pulsed throughout the stool jun was just about to sit on so that it would shock him. fine it wasn't enough to electrocute jun, but it would be enough to give him a bad hair day. jun hated having bad hair days.
instead though, jun pushed the stool away revealing a rubber glove he was wearing on his right hand.
"I knew you were about to do that too kim mingyu." jun raised his nose in the air. he thanked joshua for breakfast, taking the plate of food out of the older hero's hand right before he even thought to hand it to jun. "that's why I planned on eating in the lounge to begin with. better luck next time I suppose."
"that guy annoys me. he's so snarky and awful, why did seungcheol even hire him?" mingyu complained loudly, hoping that jun would hear him. wonwoo only sipped at his coffee, not really caring to provide his own input. mingyu tended to complain a lot about jun; at this point it was like white noise to wonwoo.
"he's not that bad, jun just likes to see you all riled up." joshua added, though he could tell that mingyu didn't really like his input. joshua didn't mind though.
"suck it up mingyu. if we have to deal with your arrogant ass, we can handle jun's." seungcheol marched into the kitchen like a man with a clear purpose. his hands were full with paperwork and his eyes carried dark bags effortlessly. naturally as the group's leader, and as the sole heir to the choi hero legacy, seungcheol had a lot on his plate.
"thanks for breakfast shua, now let's get to weekend assignments people come on, move it!" seungcheol smiled at his team, only to find both a grumpy mingyu and wonwoo staring back at him as if he had two heads. seungcheol chose to ignore them and make his way to the lounge, with joshua following him eagerly. mingyu was the next to go until wonwoo was the last one in the kitchen.
wonwoo grumbled under his breath as he was the last to enter their lounge area. everyone else had already eaten their breakfast and were gathered around seungcheol at this point. seungkwan and vernon, their two summer interns, shared a spot at the far left end of their long red couch. joshua sat next to the pair, followed by a grumpy mingyu who seemed not pleased at all to be sitting next to jun.
jun waved wonwoo down, patting a spot on the red couch next to him for the cold superhero to sit on. out of all the heroes, wonwoo guessed you could say that jun was the closest to him. by that, wonwoo meant that he could at least tolerate jun. jun wasn't that annoying to talk to, and plus being his sort-of friend came with certain amenities.
"here, eat. I know you're hungry." jun whispered to wonwoo as he placed a slice of warm toast in wonwoo's cold hands without giving him a chance to protest. wonwoo wasn't going to anyways; he was hungry.
"mingyu and jun, I want you two on patrol duty for today. take vernon along with you." seungcheol stared down at the leaflet in his hands, plastered with his notes on what today's assignments were. he had thought long and hard about who needed to do what today, and decided that pairing up jun and mingyu was the right decision. the two seemed to be playing some sort of cat and mouse game with each other, which wasn't really good for morale. seungcheol couldn't have his team fighting in the streets, especially when put in life or death scenarios.
seungcheol then peered up from his paper to see jun and mingyu already at it, with mingyu glaring at jun while jun looked utterly pleased to have gotten on the taller hero's nerves. poor vernon. seungcheol almost felt too sorry for assigning the young intern with the pair, though vernon seemed to not really care at all. "please try not to forget vernon at a crime scene again. last time we almost lost him to the feds."
"sorry about that." vernon turned the lightest shade of pink as he mumbled softly. he remembered it was only a week ago that he had been assigned to work with mingyu on assisting the police with a robbery case. he had been an essential piece of the puzzle, what with his ability of psychometry, or the power to learn about the past of an object by touching it.
the day ended of course with the feds catching wind of his abilities, and offering a deal to trade vernon for more funding for seungcheol's hero team. vernon sure was glad that seungcheol was legally obligated to ensure his safety by the summer internship program's rules, otherwise he was sure seungcheol would have taken the money.
"joshua and I are going to that press conference for the weekend, so that leaves-" seungcheol turned to face wonwoo, who had since then finished his slice of toast and had been listening silently to seungcheol with his arms crossed.
"don't make me babysit, I'm not up for dealing with that today or any day actually for that matter." wonwoo complained, which wasn't a surprise. seungcheol noted that wonwoo hadn't really ever been a team player since he joined their team. wonwoo also refused to partake in any team bonding activities, and seem unmotivated to do anything other than the bare minimum when it came to being a hero.
seungcheol, of course, found that to be weird. most heroes that he knew went above and beyond when it came to their jobs. his dad, for example, was the greatest of all time. seungcheol's dad worked overtime at heroing and was down to help anyone, regardless of who they were. he was always looking for ways to help, unlike wonwoo who seemed bothered by the idea of being a hero. wonwoo was a real mystery to seungcheol, and he needed to solve him.
"I'm right here, you do realize that right? and I'm not a that." seungkwan rolled his eyes.
"I wish you weren't here at all, but we never get what we wish for." wonwoo mumbled back, making jun laugh and turn to mingyu.
"I foresee he's going to warm up to him in the near future." jun spoke eloquently in that smartass tone he knew got on mingyu's nerves.
"and I foresee you getting your ass kicked if you don't shut the hell up with this fortune cookie crap." mingyu replied, leaning in and glaring at jun.
"thank you kim mingyu. I take being called a fortune cookie a compliment, it means like the cookie, I'm both sweet and adamant at predicting the future." jun patted mingyu gently on the head, making sure to ruffle his hair. mingyu backed away with it immediately, his face turning pink as jun stood up and walked away from the couch.
"how am I supposed to patrol with that?!" mingyu protested loudly.
"deal with it. you too wonwoo, you're taking seungkwan with you to fight the fire in the forest and that's final." seungcheol ordered, and usually his word was final. though he couldn't help but notice seungkwan looked a little confused.
"but there's no fire-" seungkwan started to speak, but a loud explosion cut him off. seungkwan was amazed as he turned to face the windows in the lounge room, watching as flames in the distance blew smoke into the air.
"there is now, courtesy of our favorite fireball, hoshi." seungcheol sighed, shaking his head. oh man was this job stressful. "what are you all standing around for? get to it! go fight crime, make me proud!"
