Chapter 15
Natalya felt like her world was being picked apart and placed on uneven ground. She felt like crying and giving up all together. Looking at how Misha and Constantin were signing back and forth rapidly between each other, she felt a sense of jealousy form inside of her.
Why? Because she wanted Constantin all to herself.
Then to hear that Misha had the cure-Natalya didn't trust the woman. Her guts were telling her something was wrong. A cure like this didn't just appear on the door steps. However, Constantin seemed to trust the woman.
Natalya found out that the woman was the one who discovered Constantin's lifeless form in the dungeon and helped heal him back to life. She was the healer in Alpha Viktor's pack. She had been searching for cure or a remedy to help Constantin gain his voice back.
"Mee-sha." A hoarse and raspy voice whispered into the air and Natalya's thought snapped apart. The voice sent a shiver down her spine. Her head whipped towards Constantin who looked a Misha affectionately.
Instantly, an overwhelming pain shot through her heart. She felt her world shifted underneath her. Constantin just spoke out loud. She knew she wasn't going crazy because her mother and Octavia also heard it. The doctor who was in the room eyes were wide with surprise.
Misha grinned at him. Natalya felt betrayed and at the same time she couldn't believe her ears. The first word out of her mate's mouth was not her name but another woman. She shouldn't feel this much jealousy but she was.
"H-how?" Natalya was the first to speak.
Constantin seemed to have remembered himself because he turned to look at her. He must have seen the emotions she was feeling. Even if Natalya wanted to hide it she wouldn't be able to hide what she was feeling at the moment.
I can't speak but when Misha was taking care of me. She helped me say her name. It is just how I work my vocal cords but I can't talk, Natalya. He explained.
Still...
Natalya was hurt. She couldn't help it. Her heart was in pain and a large part of her wanted to rip that woman apart. Misha eyed Natalya with a speculative look.
"I see." Natalya whispered and couldn't help the hurt that laced those two words. She didn't know what to think. A part of her was thrilled that Constantin might be able to speak but a part of her was deeply upset.
She didn't know he could work with what was left of his vocal cords but then again he did tell her he could make sounds here and there that were similar to talking. She could have tried harder but then again it would have been nice if he told her.
Constantin was by her side at once but she found for the first time she didn't want to be close to him. She took a step back but he was a lot quicker and grabbed a hold of her wrist. She refused to look him in the eyes. She was too afraid he will see how hurt she was.
He lifted her chin so that she would be force to meet his gaze. Don't be mad at me. I am sorry I didn't think it was something important to tell you.
Natalya removed her chin from his fingers and looked away but he was as stubborn as she was.
"Nat." He croaked.
Her heart fluttered upon hearing him attempt her name.
Please look at me, my heart. He signed where she can see his hands.
She turned back to look at him and he croaked back out her name again. A small smile graced his face when he signed again.
I have been practicing your name but your name has a lot of syllables. It is a lot of work and my throat hurts after trying it for so long. I wanted it to be a surprise. Please don't be mad at me.
Upon hearing how hard he had tried croaking out her name, the last of her pain fell away and she allowed him to pull her close to him. His scent wrapped around her and she buried her face into his chest. The tears that were threatening to escape from her tear ducts fell against his t-shirt. This heat was making her all emotional and possessive. The amount of jealousy she felt upon hearing Misha's name on his lips was like a thousand knives jabbing into her chest repeatedly.
A throat cleared behind them and Constantin pulled back to see Misha looking at them. Misha gave them an encouraging smile before reminding them again why they were in the medical wing.
Natalya turned to her main doctor. "Have you heard of this cure before?"
Misha had brought with her a small vial filled with a strong herb. The herb is an ancient plant called Nightshade. Placed under the sun and moon for a hundred years before grinding into a fine powder and then boiled till the water was a thick black substance.
The doctor shook his head. "I have only heard stories but never had I ever seen the real thing. I am not even sure if it existed."
"Does it look like the real cure?" Natalya had to ask.
He nodded. "The Nightshade cure is said to cure almost anything. It's thick black substance will coat his throat and he should heal almost immediately."
"Should we try it?" Octavia asked.
Roza moved closer and picked up the vial to take a closer look. "How did you come by something so rare?"
"I have been searching for this for a very long time. I had only found it and when I returned home I heard that Constantin was no longer in the pack. I quickly made my way towards here as I heard he now resides in this pack." Misha explained.
"I am not sure if we should try it." Natalya admitted. She stared at the vial in her mother's hand before looking at Constantin.
I want to try it. He replied back honestly. If it gives me a chance to speak to you without signing with my hands, I will do it.
"I don't care if you can speak or not, Constantin. I just don't know if we should-"
"Do you not trust me?" Misha asked directly to Natalya.
Natalya turned to face Constantin's friend. She clenched her jaw and lifted her chin slightly. "No, I don't. I don't know you and so if you are going to ask me that question, I would say no."
Constantin sighed and pulled Natalya closer to get her attention again.
Then do you trust me?
Natalya nodded immediately.
Then trust me that trying this might help you and me. I will be able to stand next to you and you can hear my voice. Don't you want to hear my voice?
She huffed feeling like she was being cornered. Octavia patted her shoulder softly. Her mother looked at her sympathetically.
"Fine. We can try it." She gave in.
Her mother handed the vial over to Constantin who held it in his hands. Natalya ordered the doctor to remain in case anything happens. After a moment, Constantin popped open the cap. He looked at Natalya one last time before lifting the vial to his lips where he took down the thick liquid. Natalya watched it go down his throat.
When he was done, he placed the cap on the vial and handed it to Misha. Misha moved closer and took hold of Constantin's free elbow.
"How do you feel?" She asked.
He shrugged before he doubled over in pain. A hoarse cry left his lips and he clutched at his heart and stomach. Natalya watched in horror as Constantin fell to his knees and onto the ground. The veins that covered his neck were evident on his skin as he wheezed. His face turned pink and then red.
Natalya dropped down onto her knees in a panic. "What the hell is going on?"
"I-I'm not sure." Misha also fell to her knees. "This shouldn't happen."
"What the hell do you mean?" Natalya looked up in anger. Her eyes were obsidian with rage.
"I-I don't know what is going on. The lady that sold it to me-"
"You idiot!" Natalya lunged for Misha's throat but her mom caught her in time. Roza turned towards Misha to order her to leave. If she didn't leave Natalya will kill her.
Misha scrambled to her feet and ran out the door in panic. The doctor tried to help Constantin breathe again but he was quickly losing consciousness. Natalya knew she wasn't going to go far. She could hear the woman outside the door crying.
"Natalya! Keep focus! Your mate needs you." Octavia reminded her.
Natalya's head snapped back to her mate. She crawled on her hands and feet towards Constantin where she held him in her lap.
"Oh god. What do we do?" She cried.
"Is it poison?" Octavia asked.
"No." The doctor said immediately. "It isn't poison. His veins will turn black."
"What the hell are we going to do?" Natalya roared. Her body and mind were running into a blank. All she could see was a future again without Constantin. She couldn't bear it. Not when she knew exactly how life would be with him. If she lost him, this time she knew she will never return.
