~An Old Enemy~

Third Person's View
*Play Song*

Aphmau's eyes widened as the explosions continued, appearing to trek closer with each boom.

"We need to leave. They'll find us soon enough if we stay here." Travis commanded, everyone not arguing.

Everyone took turn's using the guy's climbing wires, going down with three at a time as fast as they could, the ominous sound of the bombs going off into the air.

Aaron took Aphmau down, along with Melissa.

Garroth took down Cadenza and Nana.

Travis took Katelyn and Teony.

Laurence took Lucinda, and miraculously, Crystal and Violet had found their way down themselves, eating what seemed to be Lucky Charms out of a ziplock bag.

"Hey! When did you go raiding through our kitchen?" Laurence accused, the buzzing sound of the wire coming to a close as Lucinda and Laurence touched the ground, shortly followed by the others.

Crystal shrugged, Violet giggling as they chugged down the rest of their supply, high fiving.

"Damn fangirls." Laurence rolled his eyes, gesturing for everyone to follow as they sprinted in the opposite direction of the explosions, some faster than others.

Aaron realized Melissa had fallen behind a bit, backpedaling a bit to sling her over his shoulder, piggybacking her as he sprinted to catch up with the others.

"Not today—not today, Melissa!" He shouted back to her, sensing her grin, but then, out of nowhere, from great beyond the naked eye's ray of vision, came an arrow attached to a rope zooming into Melissa's spine. She gasped in Aaron's ear, followed by three special words, as the arrow that had caught her was pulled back, flailing her limp body into the darkness behind them.

Aaron slammed his foot into the dirt, breaking as he looked in absolute horror in the direction of where his sister had disappeared into, too shocked and too much in agony to scream or shout, but enough to realize everyone had watched what had happened, and they had also stopped in their tracks.

With the sound of roaring engines and ringing explosions becoming less distant, Laurence finally broke the grief-filled silence. "I'm sorry but we have to go now!"

Aphmau ran up to him. "Aaron— I'm so sorry, but we need to go, they'll find us if they don't—"

Aaron turned his gaze to her with a grimace, hesitating as he looked back at her sister's direction, but then, with a blank expression, nodded as the pack started to sprint again.

As they ran, Aphmau noticed something pretty peculiar about someone who just lost his sister....

He bore...no tears.

*

Finally, after what seemed like forever, they lost Ein's squad. All panting and heaving from a long day's hard work, or in other words, a very long, unrelenting sprint.

They had set up camp in a small cave. A pathetic fire aflame in the center of the cavern; the only light and source of heat throughout the decent sized cavern.

At this time, almost everyone had settled in for the night, wrapping themselves in the few sleeping bags that the guys had packed, so not everybody got one on their own.

They had to...share.

It was easy for the couples of course, and the close friends.

But for the strangers...

Speaking of strangers, Aphmau had noticed Aaron was no longer in the cave with everyone else. Knowing that he must be grieving, Aphmau thought it smart to seek him out, so she started with outside.

The sun had long since fallen, the pitch black sky filtering Aphmau's vision in an unfortunately difficult way.

That was, until she saw him.

It was hard to make out his figure since he was covered in all black, but she could see the bandanna well enough.

He made no sudden movements, or at least any that would indicate crying or sniffling. He was stone cold, just...cold.

Nonetheless, Aphmau decided to announce her presence. "Hey."

Aaron looked her way, his expression not changing.

His state still shocked Aphmau. How he could be so calm and collective after such a traumatic loss?

After a short silence of nothing but the midnight crickets, Aphmau found some appropriate words. "Are you....Are you okay?"

Aaron's empty gaze didn't leave hers, but that was all he allowed.

"Can I ask something?" Aphmau indeliberately blurted out, but it was too late, cause Aaron had already nodded his head.

So Aphmau said her burning question, one that she may soon regret. "Did something happen to you...after the zombie apocalypse hit?"

Aaron finally turned his gaze back to the ground, his arms crossed.

Aphmau started to mentally panic, thinking she had insulted him in some way.

Then she heard his voice. "I remember the night—the night the walkers started to arise, I was sleeping, so soundly. Easier than I had in a while, ironically, when I heard...Melissa." He said his late sister's name with much difficulty, a bit of pain working itself across his face before going back to its previous state.

"I rushed down the stairs and—there they were...my mother and my sister—my father was also touring Elysium at the time, so I knew he was safe.....but my mother—"

Aphmau had been inching closer to him as he talked, seeing how his face was wavering, so much emotion trapped behind a barrier of willpower, one.....that was about to break.

"She was lying on my living room floor, covered in her own blood—pale eyes wide and not—not blinking..."

"And Melissa...was in one of the hands of a monster—this wasn't a walker or any ordinary animal, it was a mass of destruction and carnage...its beady red eyes turning from my sister in his grasp....to me."

Aphmau was now inches from him, her hand inches from his.

"I-I didn't even have the time to comprehend what was going on—until he went for me, and he slashed at me, and all I remember was pain."

"Next thing I knew, I was waking up to hear Melissa screaming my name—the beast was gone. She was bitten and....my mother—" He cleared his throat, as he could sense the waves of pity radiating off Aphmau.

"Anyway, you asked what happened to me...that did—my sister saved my life when I was at my weakest." Then out of nowhere, he swung around and punched the tree he was leaning against, leaving a good-sized dent in it. Aphmau flinched.

Aaron continued regardless. "And when she needed me, I couldn't save her. I couldn't save..." It looked like he might start to bawl, but no such thing happened.

As if he could read her mind, he said. "And I can't even grieve for her...."

Aphmau turned him from the tree to face her, silently, wrapping her hands around his head, untying the bandanna, her heart rate rising till it stopped.

She had pulled the bandanna from his face, her lips parting as a sharp gasp arose in her.

How.......it....just how...

But it made sense now.

No wonder his gazes were always empty. Aphmau had assumed it was because of his trauma, which was probably a contributing factor.

No wonder he followed sounds rather than sight.

Well,he couldn't have followed sight, could he.....

From what Aphmau could see, there didn't look like there was any possible way for him to have any sight.

Did he even know she was the girl from the cafe at first? Or had he somehow figured that out alone the way?

Behind that infamous bandanna, were eyes.

But not the eyes Aphmau had been looking forward to seeing, nor the eyes she had remembered he had.

Aphmau transitioned her palm to his cheek, brushing his cheekbone with her thumb, her lips still parted, as she stared at the pearls in his head.

Though she knew they were eyes, they were just like pearls.

No pupil, no color, just a blank canvas, the color erased to keep everything out. His sister must have been the last straw, or so Aphmau thought.

Because what she saw was a man, made blind by a monster......she had felt like she created.

Aaron was ready, ready for her to scream to run away or shriek in disgust at his disability. At his scars. At how far he had strayed from the Mr. Perfect businessman she'd eyed what seemed like decades ago.

But no.

What she did next—shocked him, surely.

But it was herself, Aphmau had shocked the most.

She had leaned forward abruptly and pressed her lips to his, Aaron taking a second to register it was actually her, before pulling her closer to him, deepening the kiss.

Her hands were now on his finely tuned chest, his hot breath on her neck as he took a short breath before placing his lips on hers once again.

He asked for entrance with his tongue and she complied, as she now hooked her fingers on the nape of his neck, pressing him against the tree.

And whatever happened next.....

Let's just say—for a blind man...he knew what he was doing.
