35 - The Deal
Technoblade and Ranboo approached the clearing where the Eggpire had gathered, anticipating their arrival. Niki's group had split from them, hiding among the vines. Ranboo swallowed the lump in his throat as they pushed aside the crimson vines, entering the clearing where Bad and Clay were waiting for them.
"Perfect, just the benders we wanted to see," Bad smiled, but it was an empty emotionless smile, all of the infected were like that.
"Look Tommy," Clay stood behind the broken teen trapped by the vines, pulling his head back with his hair to force him to look at the two. "Our message got out after all."
"No," Tommy said weakly, gritting his teeth and trying to pull away from Clay's grip.
"I'm here, release everyone, now," Ranboo demanded, his voice shaking as Skeppy, Antfrost, and Joey moved behind them, blocking the way out.
"The deal isn't over yet," Bad snapped his fingers. Skeppy then bent the vines to lash onto Ranboo.
"Let him go," Tommy screamed, a new burst of anger fueling him to try and free himself. "Ranboo has done nothing to you!"
"Let them go," Techno's voice was level, and dangerous as he bloodbent Skeppy, a pained scream escaping him. "Or I'll do it for you."
"Are you really willing to bet their lives on your bloodbending ability," Clay said, drawing Techno's attention to the electric glove he wore, and the choking grip the vines had on Ranboo. "Or do you want a way everyone leaves here, alive?"
Glaring at him, Techno then released Skeppy and undid the vines around Ranboo. "Speak."
"It's simple, everyone leaves here, even Niki and her little rebel group, if you do one thing," Bad said. "Take away the Avatar's bending."
"Techno, you don't have to, you can get Tommy out of here," Ranboo protested. "I'll be fine."
"No, you have to get out of here," Tommy demanded, "Techno, since when did villains live up to their promises? Forget about me."
"Quiet," Clay snapped, holding the glove closer to Tommy's head, shutting both of them up. "Make your choice Technoblade or no one leaves here alive."
"I pick," His eyes narrowed, "My way." Using bloodbending Clay and the rest of the Eggpire were flung into the vines. Techno then unravelled the vines around them, opening the clearing to the moon. It was full tonight, shining right onto Technoblade. Niki and the others emerged as he brought down the walls. Scott, Jimmy, Opal, and Eret had cornered Bad and Joey. Niki and Quackity stood over Clay, both glaring at him.
"Get up," Niki snapped, holding a fireball in her palm.
At the same time Jack ran up to Tommy, helping his nephew up. "You okay."
"Yeah, I just need to get there," He pointed a shaking hand at the glowing crimson orb that had been revealed when Techno brought down the vines. Cracks had started to form on it. "I think I can free everyone. Otherwise today will have gone to waste."
"Okay," Jack helped him limp over to the thing that Bad had called the Egg. "Be careful." Tommy nodded, pressing his hand to the Egg. Jack backed up as his eyes started to glow white. Tommy had finally been able to enter the Avatar state.
"No!" Clay used chi blocking to knock down Niki and Quackity. He was soon stopped by Jack who used earthbending to trap him in a column of earth.
"You are not getting anywhere near him," Jack snapped.
As Tommy entered the Avatar state he found himself in a black void. In it was the stag he had encountered just days ago. He steadied his breathing, trying to pick out the right words to say to the spirit.
"Who are you," He eventually said.
"Don't you know me," It said, its demonic voice echoing through the void. "I am lost dreams, hopelessness, loneliness, weakness. You made me like this, Avatar."
"But I did-" Tommy started before realizing the spirit wasn't talking about him exactly. "Korra did."
"She opened the spirit portals, only for us to be treated like exhibits, like things to be looked at for fun," It bellowed. Tommy flinched back, putting his hands over his ears, yet doing nothing to block out the sound.
"No one can control what others will do, especially not with humans." Tommy said. "I understand that spirits need to be treated with respect. They deserve it more than humans."
"The word of one person doesn't change anything," It said.
"But it can, that's the Avatar's whole job," Tommy said, "I know the stories. Humans try to control what they don't understand. Korra tried to get rid of the spirit vines when they first appeared. Tenzin imprisoned Technoblade when they first found out he was a bloodbender. It was wrong. I can't promise that things like that won't happen again, but I can do my best to protect the spirit wilds. That I promise. You don't have to try to do everything yourself. You're not alone." He slowly approached the stag. "You can be at peace, let someone else help you." Much to his surprise the stag let him touch its muzzle, relaxing under his hand.
"Not all people or even spirits are fully good or bad," Tommy continued. "Sure I've made mistakes but that doesn't mean I'm evil. I don't think you are either. You were doing what you thought was necessary."
"I can fix the city," it said, "But there will be a steep price for what I've done. It was Avatar Korra that originally trapped me. Are you ready to pay for it?"
"Yes, whatever it takes," Tommy nodded.
"I hope you don't regret saying that," the stag dipped its head and the void world slowly disappeared.
Tommy blinked as he exited the Avatar state, looking around as a grey and white stag spirit with golden horns emerged from where the orb had been, now cracked open by Tommy. Only Tommy seemed to notice it. As it walked the vines turned green at its hooves. A panic rose as people came running from the vines. A mix of both previously infected and benders from Air Temple Island.
"Tommy! Ranboo!" Tubbo tackled Tommy in a hug. "You're alright."
"Yeah, yeah I am," He glanced at Ranboo as Techno helped him up. "Go. I'll be fine."
"Sorry, I didn't get them your message in time," Tubbo said.
"It's fine, everything worked out in the end," Tommy smiled. "Still you should go check on Ranboo."
"Thank you," Tubbo ran over to Ranboo, introducing himself to Technoblade as well.
"So, how did you do it," Jack asked, helping Tommy up.
"I gave the spirit what I would have wanted, someone to listen to me," Tommy said, "Sorry about asking you so many questions. I'm not used to having a family who just wants to help me."
"And I'm not used to having a nephew," Jack put his arm around Tommy. "We'll figure it out together. Even find your brother."
"Actually," Tommy pulled out the photo, pointed to Aaron then to Ranboo. "I think he already found his family."
"You think that's him," Jack said.
"I'm positive," Tommy said, "but I don't know if we really should tell him."
"Maybe today isn't the best day to worry about that," Jack said, "You've had a long day. Let's just go home."
"Wait," He stopped, turning around to look at where Clay was. "What about-"
"He's not going to hurt you anymore," Jack said, "I took care of that."
"Clay!" Tommy ran over as he realized his brother was unconscious. He pushed aside the crowd, making it to the front where George was. Tommy brought down the pillar. "Is he okay?"
"He has a pulse, but he needs a healer," George said, "right now."
"Okay," Tommy raced over to Scott, Jimmy, and Shubble, "Scott, I need your help. My brother, he's hurt and needs a healer. Please."
"Jimmy, can you help," Scott asked.
"Of course, man," Jimmy followed Tommy over to where George was. He pulled water out from a flask on his belt and began healing Clay. "I'm sorry, I can't do much."
"We'll take him back to Air Temple Island," Tommy promised George. "Jinora might know how to help."
"Why do you still care," George asked.
"I may not want anything to do with him, but that doesn't mean I want him to hurt," Tommy said.
"Thank you," George said, picking up Clay and falling in line with the other wounded. "Both of you."
"You're a good kid," Jimmy said, "I should check on Joey."
"Bye," Tommy looked at Ranboo once more before heading to Jack. It was time he went home. Now he just wanted to be a normal kid, another thing he'd have to learn how to be.
"You ready," Jack said, "Gab's going to meet us and we'll get the apartment fixed."
"Sounds fun," Tommy smiled. He was ready to finally go home.
It's not the end yet. There is still more to be done. There always is.
