15 - Chance of a Lifetime
The stadium was filled with hundreds of fans, cheers could be heard in the locker room Tommy, Sapnap, George, and Clay stood in. Clay helped Tommy get his gloves and helmet on before going to join the other two. They stood on the platform watching as the bridge extended to the arena.
"Don't worry," Sapnap elbowed Tommy as he rubbed his hands together, looking out at the crowd. "We've got this."
"I know," He muttered, but not knowing how much he could believe himself.
"Now! Please give a warm welcome." Karl announced from the top of the stands, that was their cue. "For the Dream Team Winged Lemurs!"
The crowd went wild as Sapnap led Tommy and George across the bridge and to the arena. Tommy found himself squinting and wanting to cover his ears, blood pounding and his heart thumping in his chest. Karl had said something else but he wasn't able to catch it.
On the other side the opposing team began walking down their bridge. The firebender sported long pink hair tied back out of her face, she smiled and waved at the crowd. The waterbender leading the team had a hardened expression as he sized up Tommy. The earthbender was the only one with his helmet still off, he had bright teal hair and flashed a smile at the crowd.
The two teams stand face to face on their respective sides, both tense and waiting for the referee to start the round. As the whistle blew they exploded into a fury of attacks. Fire and water bursts. Tommy was forced back. A buzzer sounded. Sapnap and George held their zone.
Series of targeted attacks slowly forced Sapnap and George back. Whosh. Water nailed Tommy and he went flying back into the water below. A whistle sounded. The round was over. Tommy's ears rung. He made his way back up and got ready for the second round, determined to do better.
Again, the whistle blew.
Tommy grit his teeth as water hit his arm, making it sting. Bam. He sent a disk flying and pushed the waterbender back. Sapnap then used a fire kick to push him back again. George singlehandedly had been able to force back the other two. It wasn't a knockout, but it had been enough for them to win the round. This was it, if they got a knockout or just won the round their place in the finals would be secured.
Screee! The whistle sounded. Fire exploded. Water and disks went flying. When the chaos cleared Tommy and Sapnap had both been pushed back two zones, towards the end. George sent a series of water bursts at the opposing team. The others followed his lead and managed to get their waterbender off the edge. Wham! An earth disk pushed Sapnap over the edge. Tommy ended up backing up too far to avoid a burst of fire and fell off. Quickly, George used another well timed water burst to send the Earthbender off the edge. As the timer finally when off both George and the firebender were breathless, but neither had gained or lost any ground. Both had remained in the first zone, leaving the round as a tie.
"Now, you all know the rules," the referee said as he approached them. "Whoever wins the coin toss chooses the element for a one versus one." He took out the blue and red coin and flipped it in the air.
Tommy's heart sank as he called out blue, the other team. He closed his eyes and sighed, already knowing the choice. "Earth." The waterbender had declared.
"Hey," Sapnap pulled Tommy away for a moment. "You got this, it's nothing different from our training sessions. Pretend that it's just you and Eret sparring."
"Okay," Tommy nodded and stepped onto the platform, watching as it rose about the regular arena. As the whistle blew he did the most risky thing he could have, Tommy closed his eyes. The disks were sent flying by him, yet he avoided each and every one. Feeling the air move around him, he zoned out everything and focused solely on the man in front of him. Then, in a quick and swift motion Tommy brought up a disk and the man went flying, so far back Tommy had managed to push him into the water.
"Let's go!" Sapnap yelled, lifting up Tommy onto his shoulders. The entire stadium had erupted into applause. Tommy was breathless, looking at everyone who was cheering, and it was for him. The next moments were a blur for him. A crowd had gathered outside of the gym, all of them congratulating Tommy on his victory. Then suddenly it was quiet as they entered a building with red and gold colored decorations, they had come to a fancy restaurant he had only dreamed of going to.
"Tommy," Karl's voice pulled him out of what only seemed like fantasy. "You did great, especially for your first time."
"Oh, thanks Karl," Tommy said, his mind going into autopilot.
"Do you want to come outside real quick? The crowd's cleared and you look like you could use some fresh air," Karl said. He nodded, walking away from Sapnap and George and following him.
"Tommy," Someone called, enveloping him into a hug. "Where have you been? It's like you disappeared a few days ago."
Tommy finally recognized the voice, Tubbo's. "No, stay away from me. You can go do whatever it was you were too busy doing a few days ago."
"What are you talking about," Tubbo said, why would Tommy be saying these things? He had been honest but why be so mad?
"You know what, no, I'm not letting you ruin another night for me," Tommy went back inside before Tubbo could get in another word.
"I honestly don't know what that was about," Karl said, "he's been cool with me. I thought he'd like to see you guys."
"Something happened the few days we haven't seen him," Crumb said, Niki muttered a few swears about Clay.
"Yeah, I seriously messed up," Tubbo muttered, Puffy and Philza coming up to them.
"Niki's right, It was probably his insufferable brother, Clay," Phil said.
"No," Tubbo said, remembering the call from a few days ago. "It was my fault. I didn't tell Tommy why I insisted he was the Avatar. I wasn't honest and it backfired."
"He'll come around, he just needs time to realize it," Crumb said. "Tommy's smart."
Inside Tommy had begun to look around for his team. He soon spotted Sam and two others he didn't recognize, one being a young girl.
"Tommy, congratulations on the win," Sam said, the young man next to him gave Tommy a warm smile.
"That was crazy," he shook Tommy's hand. "I never thought the Dream Team would come so close to losing, but you really managed to pop off."
"Uh, thanks," he said, feeling awkward about not knowing who this man was.
"I'm Quackity, this is my sister Hannah," he said, realizing he hadn't introduced himself before now. "Karl's told me a lot about you, and so has Sam."
"I want to be just like you," the girl he assumed was Hannah said, pulling on his shirt.
"I'm sure you will," Quackity chuckled, picking her up with ease. "You can do anything you put your mind to, little flower."
"Oh, oh gosh, sorry for not recognizing you," Tommy said, "sorry for being your replacement."
"Nah, it's chill, it took being on the team to realize I didn't actually want to do probending," Quackity shrugged. "Besides you did way better than I ever did."
"You sure did," Tommy's breath hitched when he saw the man, it was the earthbender he had been up against. "I'm Scott Smajor. Do you mind if I steal Tommy for a bit?"
"Go ahead," Sam said, "see you tomorrow Tommy."
"Yeah, see you," Tommy said, following Scott to an empty booth.
"You did incredible, not many earthbenders can beat me in a one v one." Scott said with a warm smile. "But I don't think you were at the top of your game today."
"Wha-what makes you think that," Tommy said. "I'm fine."
"Are you sure? I've heard alot about you from one of my airbender friends, she's amazed by your raw talent," Scott said.
"I guess there is something, but you can't say anything to anyone," Tommy said, Scott nodded. "My, uh, friend I guess, he lied to me. But I've known him for a while and it doesn't seem like him."
"Why don't you talk to him? Sometimes people who care about you do the wrong things to protect you," Scott said. "You might find out there's more to the situation."
"Huh, I guess I have been harsh on him," Tommy said. "Thank you."
"It's not a problem, and if you ever want to spar again I'd love to have you stop by, no stakes this time," Scott set down a white card with his address and number written in rainbow font, not forcing Tommy to take it as he got up. He grabbed it and put it in a pocket, then stood up to find Clay.
"There's our champion," Sapnap said as he wandered by them. "Where've you been?"
"Talking to some friends," he said, sitting down.
"Get whatever you want," George said, pushing a menu forward. "Clay will be back soon."
"An-anything," he said, he couldn't help but look at how expensive everything was.
"Yeah, it's on the house," Sapnap said.
"What?" Tommy looked at him in bewilderment, how could this place afford that?
"I know, Clay hardly ever does that," George said, "he owns the place, remember?"
"No!" Tommy said, he knew nothing about Clay outside of his home life.
"Oh crap," Sapnap said. "Okay so here's the story, you're gonna love this. At 16 Clay takes a loan from his parents money, gets some friends who are good at cooking, starts a noodle house just as the old one is closing down. He then starts to get spices and other foods imported from all the different nations, making it a hotspot for visitors from different places. Then suddenly, two years later, he's rich all on his own, the loan is paid back and he's able to move out. He then helps start me, George, and Antfrost start a probending team, the name chosen by his sister."
"Wow," Tommy said.
"I know, there's a lot more to your brother than you realize," Sapnap said.
"Yeah, it's like that with a lot of people I know," he muttered.
Hahahaha, I love angst. The match took me a while to figure out how to write but I'm happy with it. Next chapter should come out sooner.
