Chapter 74: Leadings

Kaito hammered down his fist against his flimsy desk, causing it to slightly creak at the impact. The male glared down at nothingness as his temper began itching against his pride when he continued recalling the girl's attitude towards him.

"What the hell is wrong with me?! Why do I continue wasting my efforts and sacrificing my dignity just to receive this stupid girl's affection?!" His temper soon fatigued the boy, making him slide to the ground as his grip tightly held against his desk to relieve some of his tense nerves. "She's...she's nothing! She's below me! She's just another number in the population! If she doesn't accept me then that's her loss! Why should I waste my time and energy on someone who is as significant as the average fool on the street?!" However, as his mind began simmering down from its humiliated perception, he began feeling the shame and guilt of his bitter words as his teeth grinder against each other in regretful castigation. "Then why does it hurt?"

The male heard a small knock on his door and quickly gathered his senses before requesting for the person to enter, revealing opened to reveal a blond individual. "I heard you shouting. Is everything alright?" Kaito brushed his disheveled hair back before dismissively waving the male off.

"I'm quite fine, thank you. You can leave now." However, Ryo seemed reluctant to depart from the boy.

"What's bothering you? You've been on edge for the whole day." He entered the room fully, to join the intellectual as he sat at his desk.

"It's nothing to concern yourself with. The girl is just starting to get on my last nerves with her antics." Ryo approached him and stood by his side, watching the thoughtful boy.

"Well, it's expected. You need to understand (Y/n) isn't going to embrace these circumstances with open arms." Ryo viewed the annoyed boy entering a lamenting train of thought. He gave the intellectual a pitying look as his empathy managed to catch on to his heart. "...Hey, how about instead of you pushing her, I'll go and speak to (Y/n) and try to bring us on the same level." Kaito came out of his distracted state to focus on the smiling male. "I'll try and thrown in a good word for you and hopefully help (Y/n) relax after what happened today."

Kaito held a calculating look towards the male's offer of assistance as he thought over the cheerful boy's gain. "Why would you do that? What help would it be to you if she switched her attitude towards me?"

Ryo casually shrugged and gave him a reassuring grin. "You're my best friend." The intellectual's fingers flinched as he fully registered the excuse and switched his gaze away from the cheered boy. "And I want my angel and my best friend to get along...in any case, I want you guys to be happy." The boy patted the thoughtful individual on his shoulder before leaving the room with an optimistic spark in his eyes.

Long after he was gone, Kaito kept his gaze at the door as though looking back on the departed blond. "Fools all around me..."

Jin paced around the living room, unsettled by manny worries over the girl on the floor above. He paused amidst his uneasy strides to lightly knock himself on the head in a scolding manner. "I made (Y/n) angry again..."

His gaze drifted to the ground, only to be caught by surprise from the creature that was trotting its way up to the contemplative male. Jin knelt down to beacon the large dog as it held a large and winding object in its mouth. The brunet yanked the item out of the animal's hold and sighed as he inspected the candle holder that the dog had brought to him.

"Oberon why do you keep bringing me stuff, you need to be looking after (Y/n)?" The dog groaned in dismissal and began transferring away to the second floor where he had come from. Jin sighed and was forced to ascend the stairs in order to place the abducted object back in its place. Nearing the small table that sat in the corridor, his attention directed itself to the room just a few feet away from him where the person that haunted his mind was situated. He quickly placed the scattered and broken candles that the dog had distributed amidst his scavenge for an item to bring, before trying desperately distract himself away from the room just a few meters near from him.

Jin displaced the pondering temptation with a scathing reminder of what his presence might do to the girl and prepared to turn around before he could get tempted, only for his attention to be caught again by the girl's surprised yells. "Oberon, give that back!" The dog burst through the weak door frame and happily jogged to the boy with a new object in his mouth.

The male squatted down to inspect the dozenth gadget the dog had brought him, recognising it as a remote control that he speculated over belonging to the room that held the female. Jin held his stance for the longest time, trying to convince himself to simply leave the area, only to find his feet moving towards the designated room, being closely observed by the large dog.

Jin cautiously opened the door to gradually peek in through the crooked gap. He spotted the girl sulking and having a mini tantrum as she buried her face in the pillow and swing her feet in consecutive turns in her state of frustration. She loudly groaned in irritation before lifting her head up to be startled by the figure looming at the doorway. "I-I'm sorry, did I scare you?" Jin quickly ducked back to minimise his presence, afraid he would distress the girl.

(Y/n) took a moment to register the person's identity before turning away to give him as much ignorance as she's allowed. "No, it's fine..." Jin glanced out to see the female facing away from him, and urged himself to shuffle in the unwelcoming territory and proceeded to lay the remote down beside her. "Thanks..." With the short and blunt reply, the male felt the shooing atmosphere attacking his instincts.

Jin chose to push the unwanted irks aside and settled down beside the female. After a full minute of agonising silence and disregard from the girl, the boy decided he would be the one to open an opportunity for conversation. "Are you alright?" (Y/n) inwardly grunted at his hovering attendance.

"Yes." The girl felt slight self-loathing at the reply she obliged him with, fearing a repeat of the previous altercation if she did not provide an answer. Jin grew silent at her pointed response and shifted his gaze from side to side, trying to conjure a topic of discussion.

"Would you like something to eat? You haven't eaten all day..." The girl shook her head from side to side and shuffled away from her visitor. Jin narrowed his eyes in a lamenting fashion until an idea came into his mind.

He eagerly got off of the bed and began rummaging through the nightstand until he found the supplies he needed to proceed with his plan. The girl gave him occasional glances to check on his actions, only to confront his back as he refused to reveal his intentions.

Feeling defeated, she turned back around to ignore him and push away her curiosity. Before even a minute had passed, she noticed a certain piece of paper being pushed towards her, accompanied with a pen:

'How are you doing?'

(Y/n) unintentionally let out a brief and light laugh as she looked towards the irony writer out in front of her. The girl stood still, thinking over her action before taking the piece of paper and beginning to quickly scribble down a response. She handed the note back to the awaiting male, making him chuckle slightly at the scribbled response:

'Fine.'

Jin put away the items and turned towards the girl to see her finally daring to face him. The boy looked down at his fumbling fingers as he scavenged for the words in his blank mind, to express his emotions towards her. "(Y/n)...please don't be angry at me...I-It hurts me to think that you would hate me...I've only been doing the things that have been right for you and I-"

"Jin, I'm not in the mood for explanations right now...can you just drop it." The male fell silent at her request and ogled around the surroundings, to spot a small pile of folded papers on the other side of the bed.

"What are those?" (Y/n) glanced over as to what he was referring to and dismissively shrugged the scraps away.

"I've been keeping some notes as to what's been going on these past days...it helps me take out some of my frustration." The boy gently slid closer to the girl up till the proximity of their shoulders connecting, and curiously tilted his head to the side.

"So it's like a diary?" The female slightly winced at the title he gave her momentous and rattled her head from side to side in an unsatisfied fashion.

"I don't like that word to describe them...think of it as journals." Jin smiled at her with a contempt tenderness and questioningly brought his face closer to her's.

"Can I read some?" (Y/n) was quick to respond with a denying shake and looked away from the boy to gaze at the window that allowed her the only glimpse of freedom she would receive in her position. Jin exhaled deeply through his nose as he sensed the conversation dying out. "Will you write about me later?" He teasingly inquired, making the girl shrug as a reply.

"Maybe..." The male was left with the short and stumpy word to loom over them, and forced his mind to think up of more queries that would keep their discussion going.

"So, do you like keeping a journal? Is it like a hobby." The female looked at the ceiling as she searched her head for an answer to the friendly interrogations.

"Not really...though I was obsessed with it at one point when I was little." Jin could see the smallest shadow of a smile that played on the girl's lips, directing his attention to the subject.

"Really? What happened?" (Y/n) could feel a wave of embarrassment as she recalled her childish naivety at her earlier stages, and reluctantly chose to delve into the matter.

"Well, I really was motivated on recording butterflies...not knowing I was actually just recording flowers." Jin gave her a surprised stare as the gaps in her story left his mind to fill in the confusing blanks. "Don't look at me like that, you can blame my grandma for misleading me." (Y/n) smiled to herself as she reminisced over her past and the more peaceful moments of her life. "My gran used to tell me how flowers were actually rare butterflies that haven't flown away yet...I used to spend hours just looking and recording the flowers in her garden, just waiting for these 'butterflies' to flap their wings and show me how pretty they would look in the air..."

Jin began to unintentionally smile at her reasoning as he couldn't help but find the gullible mentality charmingly endearing, and eagerly listened for more.

"I remember I cried so much when Autumn came and the flowers began dying. I thought that the 'butterflies' were never given a chance to experience being true butterflies since they never left the safety of the ground. My grandma told me then that they were actually just hibernating for the winter, just like bears and hedgehogs, and told me they'd grow back again even more beautiful in the summer and spring...she told me I'd have another chance to see if they fly away then." (Y/n) hugged her knees tightly around herself as she experienced the scenario like a call back to her memories, and felt herself being transported back in those moments. "She was even nice enough to keep replanting the same flowers year after year just so I can keep hoping...I think she still does it to this day, though I haven't visited her in quite a while..."

"She seems like a very nice person." The girl couldn't help but smile as a confirming answer. "You miss her, don't you...?" She switched over to a frown at the question as she was brought back to reality, in her caged surroundings. Jin picked up on the change in tone and inwardly whimpered as he realised the negative effect he had on the situation. "H-hey, do you want to play chess? I can get the board and-"

"No Jin, I'm fine..." Though the boy could tell that was far from her case as she continued to morse over her position.

"Please (Y/n), I just want you to be aware that what we're doing is for your own good. We don't want to cause you any harm." The girl let out a derisive huff and seemed to dismiss the reasoning like an overused excuse. "Please tell me what I can do for you to like me again. I don't want to continue like this..."

"That's not going to happen as long as you're still following Kaito's orders...none of this is making it any better for me..." Jin entered a deep track of thought over her words as his guilt accompanied his sense of indecisiveness. The male was then caught by surprise as he felt a wet snout poking his fingers, and turned around to witness the large dog handing him a slipper he had found outside his assigned room.

"Oberon has been bringing me things since this morning. I think he's bored." (Y/n) shrugged in mutual understanding, knowing she had not been in the mood to provide the animal with much attention. "...Hey, let me help you out if you're feeling bored." He chirped towards the downcast female and pulled out a square shaped piece of plastic that had a 6x6 set of individual squares that seemed to have mismatched pictures on them. He held the object up in a demonstrating manner and as he turned it back around to himself, (Y/n) could feel her eyes straining as they tried to keep up with the quick and swift movements that his fingers began making as they slid each singular piece behind and in front of each other until they united in place to create a floral pattern on the plastic box. The girl hesitantly took the miniature game, intimidated by her visitor's skills and ease at solving it. "It's a sliding puzzle. I'll make you a deal: if you manage to solve it today, I'll...-" The boy bit down on his words as he realised that the moment he promised the prohibited action, he wouldn't be able to go back on his word. "I'll unlock you...just for a minute or two."

The female stared at the boy as a new source of life spread throughout her senses as she hopefully looked towards the game. Jin took the object to mix around the squares into an unrecognisable image again, and handed it back to the anticipating girl. "Deal!" However, as she spoke out her confidence she felt the eagerness slipping away as the boy got up to leave her to her own resources. "W-wait! Aren't you going to show me how it's done?"

Jin sympathetically shook his head and raised his hands to extract himself from any involvement. "I'm sorry, that'll be a bit too easy...but I have hope, you're smart enough to figure the tricks out. I'll come back in a few hours, OK?" He smiled at her with an assured aura and left the female to wonder over the puzzle.

Jin sighed out his frustration as he tried to distract himself with as many things that could occupy his mind, only for his thoughts to focus back on the girl that he had left on her own. He stubbornly rubbed his head in an attempt to rid the confounding observations of the female, rendering his exertion fruitless. '(Y/n)...please don't be sad...please just be happy-'

Before the male could further delve into his blundering thoughts, he was perplexed by the sounds of scratches that came just beyond his door. Unsure at first of what the sounds could be, he reluctantly approached the entrance. Once he had opened the door, he had to shift his gaze down towards the large creature that expectantly tilted its head to the side. Jin sighed in inpatient tiredness and knelt down to inspect the item that had been brought to him that time around.

"Oberon you need to stop and go look over (Y/n)..." He sternly patted the dog's head and obviated the item that was in his mouth, only to notice the contrasting difference from his previously brought objects. He inspected the sheet of paper that had been crudely chewed on, and raised an eyebrow in quizzical speculation as he unfolded the sheet. 'What's this...?' His eyes became immersed in the writing on the paper as each detailed word began acting up on his rare temper.

Jin's hands began shaking as each muscle tensed up by the adrenaline that rushed through his veins, alongside the rage that caught up to his dissolving saneness and rationality, forcing him to bolt up from his kneeling position to shakily hold himself steady against the door frame. He felt his vision drown out in a sea of red and black as his anger reached unimaginable points beyond his gentle nature. Gripping the door as though imagining his hands around a neck, he let the paper flutter to the ground as he wasted no time to heavily walk away in searched for a specific individual.

Bako breathed out his stress, feeling his nerves snapping away like consecutive strings of a tensed harp. 'What are we going to do next...? I won't be able to control myself if this keeps up...I need to assure (Y/n) doesn't get involved in more of this corrupted game Kaito's playing...' He stopped stirring his coffee as his muscles shut down to allow his mind to fully become engulfed in his wondering thoughts.

However, he was forced back to reality as he sensed a presence lingering in the room, and swiftly swivelled around to notice the brunet standing straight in front of the doorway of the kitchen. Bako analysed the darker shaded glint in his empty eyes and the alert ambiance he held against a casual exterior.

The azure male blinked a few times to gather his thoughts before he dithered out a response to break the tension. "Did you need something?"

Jin gave no sign of response, his eyes remained as vacant as his expression as his hand twitched behind his back in awaiting anticipation.

"Yes, actually..." His voice no longer held the tender softness that could define him. As his hand was brought into view, Bako's senses tensed and spiked up to a new instinctual alertness as he looked at his reflection against the large blade that was held in the opposing boy's steady hand. "Can I have your head?"
