Chapter 63: Conflicting Emotions

October 11th, Sunday

(Y/n) gently patted at her neck, wincing slightly as she pushed down on the light red and blue fingerprints that were embedded in her skin. She kept craning her neck in the mirror to examine the swatches of deep colour that appeared around her throat like a necklace of bruises against her flesh. 'Damn it, what has he done...? With the bite I could at least cover it easily, but this won't be effortless to hide...should I tell someone, or is it safer to drop the subject...?' As ideas flickered inside of we mind like candles, each one going out as she weighed her options, leaving only a few flames still glowing. She speculated over her choices and consequences, measuring each risk with worrying anxiety. 'Maybe...I'll say something after I've had a chance to think about it...' She heaved out a sigh, feeling nauseous as she flashed back to the male's strong hands gripping around her throat.

She shivered at the memory and rubbed her sore neck, trying to soothe the sensation. The girl stood up from the mirror and rummaged through her drawers to find the article of clothing that would aid in covering the contrasting colours.

After finding a scarf that would have to act as her concealer for the time being, she emerged through her bedroom door and headed towards the stairs to be greeted by two males who were in an intense game of chess. "Good morning (Y/n)." Jin gave her a small wave before proceeding to move one of his pawns on the board.

"Morning." She gave him regard and a quick smile, trying to avoid eye contact with the intellectual playing against the brunet.

"Good morning (Y/n)." Kaito attempted to beacon her attention back to him, only for her to simply give him a small hum as her answer. "Why are you wearing that?" He pointed towards the scarf while also proceeding to move his own piece against the boy opposite of him.

"I'm going out..." She slid the glass door to the back garden and proceeded to depart from the rest of the group, leaving the males to their game. Kaito was seemingly distracted as he carefully watched the girl's disappeared form, and glided the nail of his index gently against his skin.

"Something seems to be bothering you." Jin observed the boy's thoughtful state and piped up, making his move against his opponent on the board.

Kaito hesitated on answering the question for a while as his mind scattered like roots, trying to come to a simple conclusion. "...No, it's nothing." He shifted his piece onward and relaxed back to await for the other boy's move.

"I know you better than you think Kaito. You have this habit of scratching your face whenever you're bothered or deeply thinking about something." Kaito looked at the hand that was still itching his face before stubbornly putting it down. Jin gave him an innocent smile that showed slight mischief at his confirming hypothesis and moved his own pawn on the board.

"You're a good chess partner but your deduction skills can be quite a bother sometimes." He opposed the other boy's pawn with his own and ended his turn.

"I can't help it if I'm intuitive. I need to compensate for my health in some way." The male moved another one of his pieces to avoid it being taken.

"That sixth sense of yours might get you unwanted attention one day." Kaito placed another one of his pawns forward, cornering the opposing boy's main piece.

Jin seemed to be looking between the lines of the intellectual's faultless banter, and proceeded to move one of his pawns to oppose his queen. "I guess I'm going to have to use my instincts to see the danger before it happens then."

The pair seemed to come to a mutual, subconscious understanding as they stared at each other as though analysing what the other one's track of thought was. "Then it's best you keep watching your back. Checkmate." Jin looked down at the board to see his King surrounded by all sides, providing no escape for his pawn and virtually ending the game. He wondered at what point the pieces even came to their positions of encircling the head figurine, and attempting to decipher the strategy. "I'll go make some coffee." Kaito stood up from his seat on the couch and left the second male to stare after him.

The brunet stared at the board and pieces as the scattered puzzles in his mind began branching out to postulate over interpretations. "...You don't even like coffee." The boy flicked the victorious King pawn of his opponent and watched the small figurine fall against the board.

(Y/n) forcefully distracted herself with the pair of dogs, only to have her thoughts wondering off to the occurrence of the previous night. She was too preoccupied with her insights that she hadn't noticed the person standing behind her until a while into her daydreaming. "Alex, where did you come from?" The male in question silently sat behind the girl and enwrapped his arms around her to bring her body close to him in a defensive embrace. "What are you doing?" She attempted to politely but sternly pull his arms apart but only acted as further incentive for the boy to cling onto her.

"I don't want you to catch a cold." He blandly told her, forcing an irritated sigh to escape her lips.

'I feel like these are just excuses to a certain point.' She allowed the boy to remain in his position, as long as he didn't overstep his boundaries. "Did you come here to check up on the dogs?" The girl sensed the boy nodding his head as a response.

"I'm happy you're here too." The boy pressed his head further into the girl's scarf, causing a sense of anxiety in her, over the suspended danger of her bruises.

"I-I appreciate you enjoying my company but please give me some space." The female shifted around in her restricted area to slide boy's head down to her shoulder. 'Good enough...at least this way I won't have to worry about him finding the marks...what should I do about them, though?'

Alex rested his head against her, seeming to have little complaints with his new position. As he allowed himself to immerse himself in the blissful moment, his senses unintentionally picked up on a scent that was both familiar and unrecognisable to the animal lover. While the girl had her head running through decisions over her marks, she was thrown back to reality as she heard a low, threatening growl from the person behind her. Her blood stopped coursing through her body as her heart came to a stop at the unnaturally fierce sound, and dared not turn around to look at the boy.

"Why are you wearing this?" He looked towards the jacket that had caused his temper to flare at their previous encounter and felt his heart rate escalate. "This belongs to another man, doesn't it?" He pulled back to look at the coat with daggered eyes and gripped the fabric with a force that could tear it.

(Y/n) quickly propelled the male off of her and shuffled away from him. "Alex just leave it! It's nothing important!"

"Then why are you defending it so much? Why is it so special to you?" The boy grabbed the girl's ankle and effortlessly slid her struggling form back towards him and pinned her shoulders, confining the girl to the ground.

"Get off! What are you doing?!" She attempted to lift the boy's off as she pushed against him, but made little progress with her labour.

"Take it off...take this disgusting thing off." He grabbed the edge of the clothing and began removing it from the girl's shoulders. (Y/n) felt the adrenaline rushing through her body as the fear of the male discovering the teeth marks, and lingering possibility of seeing the blue fingerprints, began swirling in her paranoid mind.

She grabbed his hand and halted his action as she thrashed around to knock him off balance. "No! Get off!"

"I'll rip it...I'll rip it apart. I'll burn this thing and then I'll find the person who gave it to you." As he felt his own muscles gaining their full strength, he began overpowering the girl as he tugged against the clothing as though trying to take down vulnerable pray.

On the sidelines, the dogs whined and became unsettled at the scene as they contemplated over helping either their master or friend. "Stop it! Calm down!" However, her pleas fell upon deaf ears as the boy blocked out any sound from his surrounding until his hearing would pick up on a name.

As the girl sensed her strength failing she felt the boy disappear from above her, leaving the female to stare up at the sky in a bewildered state. She heard a loud thud that indicated a body slamming against the tree, and shakily brought her body to sit up and look at the person that had driven her assailant to the large plant.

Alex glared back into Jin's malicious eyes that seemed to hold a layer of bloodied intentions as he scowled at the boy in front of him. The enraged male could feel his veins pumping blood to his muscles and nerves as he began straying from his better judgement, and ruminated over advancing towards the boy to attack. "Don't touch (Y/n). I won't let you hurt (Y/n)." Jin clenched his jaw, making his teeth push against each other as his faltering reasoning began enforcing his more tactful side over the demon fighting against his estimation, and nearly felt a rise of his temper as Alex began silently laughing to himself.

"'Hurt her?' I'm the one who's going to protect her. She only needs me by her side." Jin made a hastened approach towards the unperturbed and amused male, before forcing himself to stop as the Anatolian Shepherd ran in front of his tamer and growled at the opposing boy. Jin dared not oppose the animal with no form of protection or counter attack and had to settle on sending the grinning boy a menacing glare that warned him over venturing to touch the girl again.

The two seemed to be in awaiting anticipation as to who would make the first move, and as the atmosphere continued to build up the bloodied air, with apprehension, until there was a slight clicking sound that came from a third party member, alerting the defensive dog to drop its guard and follow the source of the commanding noise. (Y/n) followed the large animal's direction as it approached it's master to obediently sit beside his feet.

Kaito knelt down to pet the creature to calm it down and looked towards the pair of males that were sending each other coaxing glowers. "That's enough you two. Alex, go back inside and wait for me on the second floor." The boy in question showed stubborn reluctance to follow the charge and seemed more interested in lunging at his vigilant opponent. "That's an order!"

The male slightly winced at the demanding and sharp tone in the intellectual's vocals and proceeded to make his way inside while exchanging challenging looks with the brunet. Kaito waited until the boy had fully left the scene before approaching the other opponent to interrogate him for answers.

"What happened?" He sternly asked for a straight and veracious response.

"I saw him attacking her so I stepped in." The crimson haired male seemed slightly surprised at the unexpected news of the girl's assault and scratched his cheek as his mind catalogued the information.

"Is that all?" The boy nodded in response, making the intellectual end his assessment of the situation on one side of the occurrence. "If that's the case, I would like you to go do some shopping for supplies." Jin stared at him as though the request were a completely arbitrary thought.

"What?! Why?! Aren't you going to do something about this-?!"

"I'm not having both of you at a proximity of each other until things simmer down between you two. Now go." The emerald eyed boy prepared to oppose the demand, only to irk himself to settle down and avoid any confrontation with the intellectual.

Jin turned towards the girl who was still too stunned from the events to even acknowledge the pup beside her, trying to get his master's attention out of concern. Jin graced the female with a gentle smile and soothing atmosphere, extending his hand to stroke her head in a comforting demeanour. "Are you alright-?"

"I said now!" Kaito snapped at the boy after realising his intentions. The intellectual's blood boiled at the sight of the male trying to place himself in the girl's good graces and instinctually felt the urge to cease the tender action.

Jin spun his head back to glare at the boy and retracted his body to begrudgingly walked back inside to perform his obligated job, leaving the intellectual to speak with the female.

(Y/n) sighed out in relief at the neutralised atmosphere and quickly adjusted her scarf back to a more secure knot, and steadied her rhythm of breathing before noticing the boy staring at her. "W-what?"

Kaito walked over to the girl and knelt to her level. He felt slightly disheartened as she apprehensively leaned back and averted her eyes away from him. "Are you ok?" The girl nodded her head, still refusing look at him in the eyes. "...You worry me so much (Y/n). I feel like I can't take my eyes off you whenever they're around...so please try and stay around me where I can see you-"

"I'm fine." She quickly interrupted him, squirming away from the boy in an awkward motion.

"...You've been very uncomfortable around me since Friday...I can see that what I confessed to you isn't being taken optimistically." (Y/n) wanted to deny the male's claim out of guilt, but knew that all her lies would be naked against his analytical insight, so she settled on remaining quiet. "...You know, there is nothing worse you could have done than completely ignore my presence right after rejecting my feelings."

The girl felt a sting in her heart out of shame for her unprofessional response to his emotions, but kept her head down to avoid his eyes. Kaito watched the girl's slumped form as he dissected her body language, and stuck his hand out to stroke her hair with a delicateness that seemed unnatural for the boy's usual gestures. (Y/n) immediately pulled back from the touch and cringed at both his and her own action. The female prepared to stand up and leave before she could embarrass herself further, only to fall back to her knees as she was pulled down for her form to be embraced by the boy. The girl stood bewildered at the unexpected movement, and was trapped in the boy's embrace. "K-Kaito, what-?!"

"Please let me enjoy this, even for just one moment." (Y/n) felt her blood freeze over and her throat dry up as a sense of caution spread through her. But after a few seconds of scrutinising over her position, she sympathetically relaxed to allow the boy a calmer hold. "...I don't care. I don't care what the hell anyone thinks of me. People have hated me all throughout my life, I'm used to any disdain towards me. I've developed an resistance towards the hate and repudiate feelings from others...but I don't know what I'll do if you shun me as well...I don't know how I'll cope if you end up avoiding me. You're someone special to me." He gingerly placed his palm atop her head to stroke and feel each strand of the girl's hair, like a fragile doll. "I'm already having to endure the others putting their hands on you. In the end, the only thing that kept my nerves and patience was your attention...so please don't take that away from me."

(Y/n) had carefully listened and assessed each one of the boy's emotional words and feelings. "Please let me go..." The boy squeezed her body in rebellious reluctance to release her, but eventually unwrapped the patient girl with hesitance. The female gave him no more regard as she left the male on his lonesome to go back inside.

Kaito stood in his sitting position in a deep and thoughtful disposition as he lamented over the girl's response. He was only brought back to reality by the k9 that pushed its snout against his master's shoulder to check on his comprehension. The intellectual stroked the dog's coat to confirm his notice of the animal.

"Are you worried about me, boy?" The creature stuck out its tongue in a panting motion and let out a few whines of uneasiness. "You don't need to concern yourself with me...I know exactly what to do to bring my stupid girl back to me. Whether she accepts me or not, I'll be the only one she'll have eyes for if I play my pawns right."
