Chapter 57: Acceptance
The girl felt her body gently stirring awake as she regained her senses, groggily rubbing her eyes to ride them of the abrasive layer of dryness and glanced down at the male that was still napping at her stomach. She sighed, realising she would not be able to move until he also succumb to reality. The girl glanced around the warm room to absorb her surroundings, only to be paralysed at the figure that stood a few feet away from the pair. (Y/n) nearly jumped at the sight of the third presence and felt her blood run cold at the dark, lifeless eyes that stared at the teenagers with spite, as they tried to repel the image before them. "R-Ren? Where did you come from?" She half whispered, mindful over waking the male that was still using her as a cushion.
The boy kept his chilled and condemning stare lingering the female until it lightly shifted toward his friend, still resting on top of her. He grimaced at the sight and clenched his jaw until a slight squeaking sound was heard from the pressured hinges. Ren breathes heavily as each exhale sent shivers down the girl's spine.
"Ren...?" She wasn't sure what she was supposed to ask that would break through to the boy as his eyes became black holes, meant to devour anything in their vision.
Jin gently began getting agitated in his slumbering state until he opened his tired eyes to look up at the girl he had been resting on. After taking a moment of confusion and realisation, he quickly retracted with a light red tint on his cheeks, as he darted his eyes around the room in a failing attempt to hide his shame. "I-I'm sorry." He blurted out before turning away, only to notice the third member in the area.
The two boys stared at one another with blank expressions as the only exchange of application. "I-I'll go now. Hope you get better Jin." The female arose from the bed and tensed up her muscles as she passed by the musician who had been emitting a toxic air around him. "See ya..." She regretfully closed the door behind her, hoping for the pianist to contain any urges of malevolence.
The girl sighed out her concern and prepared to leave the area until she was nearly tackled to the ground by an energetic figure.
"R-Ryo, you startled me!" She looked back to notice the blond boy squeezing her in a happy bear hug, a large simper plastered across his bright face. The male chuckled at the girl's reaction and retracted with a wide grin.
"Sorry angel, I just couldn't wait to hold you again." He swung back and forth on his toes and heels, elated with the female's presence. "How has my darling been doing?"
"I'm fine..." The cheered boy noticed a small dip in her voice and placed a hand on her head to stroke the uncertain female.
"That doesn't sound like it, something seems to be on your mind." He noticed the girl's unassured expression and felt his mood going down at her uneasy state. "Is everything alright?"
(Y/n) rattled her head in uncertainty and caught the boy by surprise as she handed him a serious look. "Can I ask you something?" Ryo raised an eyebrow at the sudden inquiry but proceeded to positively nod his head. "Is this something important to you?" She lifted up the silver wings of the intricate ornament that hung around her neck. The boy stared at the object with a blackened expression before quickly attempting to replace it with a coveted smile.
"W-why do you ask angel?" However, the female remained unfooled by the counterfeit grin and kept a serious expression.
"Kaito keeps acting weird around this thing and I'm wondering if there's a reason for that." Ryo's ebullient smirk disappeared at the uncover and his vibrant eyes withheld a shattered band of anguish in them, alerting the girl.
"It used to be my mother's." (Y/n) stared down at the necklace with even more questions racing through her mind.
She examined the precious jewellery and gave the boy another befuddled gaze. "But won't she mind you giving this to me? It looks so expensive and precious and-"
"She's dead."
The girl felt her heart sink to her legs as her knees began shaking and fidgeting. She shot her head up to look at the downcast boy and stumbled for words, wanting to hit herself at her oblivious reasoning. "O-oh, I-I'm so sorry Ryo, I didn't...-"
The sadly scoffed at the female's reaction and comfortingly caressed her cheek. "You don't have to be sorry angel, just be happy. That's all I want." He moved his hand away before proceeding to walk off.
"I really am sorry Ryo..." She tried whispering but her voice was shaken with shame and guilt at melancholic reminder.
"Don't worry about it. Catch ya later sweetness." He waved his goodbye to her before disappearing off towards his own room, leaving the girl to morse over her doing.
"I'm such an idiot."
The female had been tediously attempting to distract herself with the entertainment that could be found in her room, only for her mind to wander off towards numbers of other matters that included anything else, but peace. Concluding her bet chances would be to explore around the house, she left her room to walk through the quiet corridors.
'God this is getting on my nerves...I feel like I'm going soft in the head...what should I do now? Everything seems so quiet...' Her thoughts were obstructed as she realised she had stopped beside a door, and chose to take a moment to stare at it with wonder. 'This is Ren's room...I better just leave, I don't want a repeat of last time-' As the girl prepared to walk away from the scene, the door opened itself, allowing a figure to come forth from within.
"I thought it might be you..." Ren stepped out of his own surroundings to enter the girl's, and give the apprehensive female a smile of hospitality.
"How did you know I was out here?" She raised her brow at the male, receiving a light and amused chuckle from the boy.
"My piano skills drastically improved out of nowhere, so I had a hunch my muse might be around." (Y/n) scoffed at his justification and moved her feet in the direction of the corridor. "Would you like to come in? I've prepared something for you." The girl shivered at the implication and felt herself mentally distancing herself from the boy's faultless grin.
"I'm fine, thanks." She bluntly stated before continuing her retreating strides.
"If you're afraid that I'll do anything, I can assure you I'll keep myself to myself." However, the female carried on her exit with little concern for his excuses. "This is for your sake, so if you want that burn and bite to go away I was just offering."
The girl stopped in her tracks and permitted a backwards glance towards the male. Ren simply shrugged at the offer and entered his abode leaving the door open in a teasingly tempting manner for the female. (Y/n) remained staring at the entrance provided for her and fluctuated her mind and body towards and away from the door. After a few huffs and grunts, she reluctantly strode towards the entrance.
'What am I doing? This is probably a trap...doesn't matter, if he tries anything, he's gonna lose all his teeth.' She tried to reassure herself and hesitantly entered the boy's surroundings. She noticed the male rummaging through his cupboards until coming forth with a small jar of ointment. Ren satisfyingly grinned at the girl's presence and beckoned for her to sit on his bed.
(Y/n) gazed at the offer but retaliated by sitting in one of the chairs and ignore the male's disappointed look. As he took a seat directly in front of the girl, he welcomingly extended his hand in a request to inspect the girl's burnt one. After a long, unbearable moment of uncertainty, she begrudgingly handed him her wounded skin, keeping the rest of her body as far away as possible.
"The good news is it's not severe, so it won't cause any long-term scarring. Just be careful when holding things with this hand." The male gently applied the soothing cream, causing the girl flinch slightly at the pressure and soon to feel relief from the cooling sensation that followed it. 'That f***ing snake...how could she lay her hands on someone like (Y/n)? I might have missed out on my chance this time, but when I see her again I'll hang her by her spine...' After finishing off the treatment, the girl remained slightly suspicious at the quiet smile that cavorted on his lips.
"How did you know I got burnt?" The female decided on questioning, realising the silence of the situation would further make it a discomfort for both of them.
"Alex told me when he couldn't find the ointment himself. So he left me in charge of treating you." The male began inspecting the slight burn, concluding it wouldn't cause too much trouble for the girl.
"So the guys treat you like their personal nurse? You sure seem to know a lot about medicine..." The girl recalled on the undebatable moments of aid the boy provided for the group, until she noticed a sorrowful frown on his features. "Ren?" She called out his name and grabbed the boy's attention with a light jump.
"Hehe, sorry (Y/n)..." The male retracted his hold and prepared on putting the cream away. The girl noticed the distant look in her treater's eyes and felt her curiosity pushing away her reasoning.
"...So, do you like studying medicine or...?" She attempted to nonchalantly question, catching the distracted male's attention.
"You could say that..." He put away the small container and proceeded to scavenge through the cupboard for another object of need.
"...So, do your parents work as pharmacists or doctors-" The female's speech was interrupted by the sound of a plastic container hitting the ground as Ren stood paralysed at the spot as a distressed face cemented itself onto his features. "Ren?!"
The boy quickly snapped out of his daze and kneeled down to pick up the lidded cup with a hindered spirit. "U-uhm...yeah, they're both surgeons so you could say that I learned a few things..." (Y/n) was slightly surprised at the news.
"Really? I would have thought that they would be musicians of a sort, seeing how good you are with the piano." Ren gulped at the comment as a foggy sheet seemed to lay against his obsidian eyes.
"N-no...they don't really approve of me playing an instrument..." He put away the fallen medicine and proceeded to search for the ointment in mind, keeping a distant atmosphere around him from the second person in the room.
However, the girl filled with suspicion and curiosity, ignoring the hints of his silence. "But why? You're so good at it, the very first time I met you, you were playing like a professional." A weak smile appeared on the boy's face before lachrymosely disappearing.
"Humph...do you want to hear something funny (Y/n)?" The girl was taken aback by the question and hesitated before nodding her agreement. "That was the first time in years that I had even touched a piano..." He turned around, avoiding any contact with the female's puzzled gaze.
"What...? Why? You looked so passionate about it, I would have thought you played it all the time." The boy gave a light chuckle before exhaling in displeasure.
"I used to but...things happen." He approached the girl with the second ointment and sat back down in front of her to treat the second wound.
(Y/n) noticed the solemn layer in the boy's eyes and her heart seemed to be pricked with the tiniest of needles at his downcast expression. "What happened...?"
Ren shook his head and gave a dismissive smile. "It's best not to trouble you with my problems (Y/n). Just forget I said anything." As he reached out to pull back the girl's shirt to reveal her bruised shoulder, the female moved back and crossed her arms.
"Ren, I want to know what's bothering you...If you don't trust me with that, then I don't trust you with the cream." The male blinked a few times before forcing on another solicitous grin.
"(Y/n), don't be so stubborn and let me-" However, the boy's second attempt at taking the girl's collar down was rendered futile as she moved away and dodged his hand. She firmly stood staring at the boy, determined to understand the reaction she was presented with.
Ren also joined in with her stare as both of them kept unblinking eye contact with one another. After a small while, the boy dropped his hand and leaned back to observe the girl with a neutral expression that seemed to give no hint to his thoughts.
"Do you really want to involve your mind with my nonsense?" The girl gave the serious boy and firm nod and made herself comfortable, ready to listen to him. Ren sighed out, having a second reconciliation before deciding on his final choice. "There's a reason why I and Jin are quite close friends...we understand one another's predicaments and know what we're going through...more than anyone else"
(Y/n) perked at the mention of the bashful boy and attempted to make a connection with his burden to the pianist's own experiences. Ren uncomfortably fidgeted in his place and leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling.
"Both our families expect...a lot from us. I guess Jin told you about his family's suppositions for him and how he's expected to become an officer at the least...I and him are pretty much on the same mat." The boy bent forward to rest his chin on his interlocking hands and carefully analyse the girl in front of him. "However, for me is slightly different. My family want me to become a surgeon like them...my parents own a chain of hospitals and have very high expectations of me...they give me no choice and I really can't do much about this..."
"Well...that's not too bad, I mean I don't approve of them forcing you but you seem to be very knowledged in medicine. I'm pretty sure you can make them proud." (Y/n) tried to positively heighten the mood, but received a mocking chuckle.
"You're so gullible (Y/n)...yeah, I've had to study for years, whether I like it or not. And I certainly have the potential of becoming a surgeon, just like my parents wished but...I can't." The girl tilted her head at a slight angle. "...I used to love playing the piano...I still do. I love the instrument so much. My parents used to joke around over how I'll grow up becoming a musician...how they should have called me Beethoven or how I made the notes come to life, and so on...but after a while they just stopped."
Ren glided his gaze to the ground as he reminisced the better times of his childhood and supporting memories before they disappeared soon after.
"My parents became more and more angry with me over my ambitions with the piano...I didn't know why they changed their attitude so quickly...After that, I was rarely allowed to even come near the piano and they never wanted to listen to me playing again...but I was still so happy." A small smile appeared on the boy's lips at the nostalgic feeling that emerged from the memory. "My older sister...she was so kind and supportive. She would always love hearing me play and then would try herself...she was quite horrendous at it but I never mocked her over it." He gave a hearted chuckle at the memories. "I loved her so much, she wasn't just my sister or my friend...she was my number one fan. We would spend hours talking about stupid things, meaningful things, emotional things and happy things..."
The boy's smile became wider as the repressed memories became clearer and vivid.
"We were so close...she used to be like a second mother to me. Whenever I would get hurt or injured she would start tickling me and say 'I'll kiss it all better' and then she would...she would tell me how hard university was but how fulfilling it felt for her to be studying neurosurgery." The girl couldn't help but smile along with the boy, as the contagiously lighthearted atmosphere seemed to emit from every pore of his body. "She supported me so much...with my music and studying. She used to say that when we grew up, she would inherit the family business and go easy on my part...that I would be allowed to follow a career in music and be given the position of a doctor as a side job...she understood me more than anyone else."
As the cheered atmosphere began to slowly dissolve into thin air, the boy simmered down at the progression of his memories.
"It was such a warm afternoon...my sister had a day off and promised to spend her free time with me...we were near a big park -I don't remember where it was- and we were playing frisbee, kicking around a ball, just enjoying the day in general...our parents were busy with work so I quite enjoyed the quality time." The boy's muscles became tense as the events of the day began rewinding themselves through his mind. "She was so horrible at kicking the ball...she managed to make it fly right past the gate of the park...a-as an instinct I ran for it, I didn't care where it was going, all I knew was that I had to catch it." Ren's body began quivering as his heart began pumping more and more blood through his veins as the adrenalin of that time reflected back on him in reality. "It bounced all the way to the road...I heard nothing, I-I don't think I was paying attention I...-I didn't even see it coming...it was so close to me but I just barely managed to run past the truck...even an inch closer it would have completely run into me but..."
The girl became immersed as each word was filled with emotion, and was taken by surprise as the boy's knees shook along with his trembling hands. His voice became muted and hazy, as though every breath seemed to suffocate him.
"I didn't even...-I didn't even r-realise she was running right behind me..." As the boy's head remained hanging down, the girl noticed a pair of droplets pelting to the ground as the male's entire frame trembled. "I hadn't even heard her...I don't know if she had even shouted for me to stop...I-I didn't pay attention...all I heard from behind me was this disgusting crack...to this day I'm not sure if it was from the car or..." He took in a sharp inhale of breath before shakily exhaling. "When I turned around I saw my sister...she was so far away-the impact must have...I-I felt like the entire world had just stopped...I didn't want to believe it was happening but...she was there...so limp and-and..."
The male clenched his scalp as the haunting thoughts began attacking his slipping mind, scarifying at his stabilised mindset and leaving the remnants of the images to piece themselves together.
"I-I ran to her...I don't remember anything around us, all that was important was my sister...I think I was crying but I-I don't really remember...her leg...i-it was so twisted..." As a few more drops of clear liquid fell to the ground from the boy, he lightly sniffed when the overflow of emotion broke through the suppressing boundaries. "There was so much blood...everything was covered in blood...I never knew the body had so much...she was breathing so harshly, I knew she was suffering but...I couldn't do anything." The male hacked a few times to regain his composure over his trembling words. "My sister...my best friend, and the person that I couldn't imagine my life without...she was dying right in my arms and all I could do was cry...ho-how could I help her? O-one part of her f-fa-face was completely crushed...I remember t-the number plate...it must have cut into the side of her stomach because...oh God..."
Images of the older girl's entrails decorating the pavement and road, accompanied with fragments of shattered bone and garnet fluid scattering the grounds, seemed preserved and fresh in his mind like a tattooed mark he would have to bear into his conscience.
"She was dying right in front of me...I could do nothing but just cry for her...I cried but she continued smiling...as if everything was alright, a-as if I sh-shouldn't worry...she-she tried...so hard to speak...but all that came out was-was this red liquid..." Ren clawed at his head at the imaginary gurgling sound that echoed in his ears. "I didn't know what I was supposed to do...so I just cried next to her...all I knew was that I-I needed to comfort her...She would have done the same for me so...N-none should just 'go' alone like this...my sister...my sister was-" The boy gave out an unintentional wail as he tried to push against the distorted memories.
"Ren...it's ok, you can stop." But the boy shook his head and lifted his face towards the female to reveal the precluded tears that ran along his cheeks.
"I-I'm sorry (Y/n)...I-I didn't want you to see me like-like this...I'm just so tired...a-all-all I want is to remember her one more time...and look what happens." He examines his state, wiping away the tears that stung his eyes. "She looked so helpless...she was so-so lifeless, and all I could do was watch her...ha-all I could do was watch her suffer while I...while I just-just stood beside her and cried...all I could do was watch." The boy felt another trail of his woes caressing his cheeks and huffed out.
As he gazed towards his hands, flashes of a form began appearing through his sight, as sirens of ambulances and police cars bounced around his brain, like tangible hallucinations meant to taunt and degrade his hollow mind.
"I couldn't do anything...I could only let her die...-let her die in my arms...(Y/n), please forgive me, I thought I was ready...I thought I could finally face the past b-but I-" The male felt his unstable hands steadying as they were held tightly together by the female's.
The boy gave her a gentle smile and brought his forehead to rest against the girl's braced fingers. As he felt his senses wearing away at the noxious recollections, she gave a light sigh.
"...Everything felt so grey after that...my dear sister was gone, I was left all on my own...I wanted to forget her so much, every time I came near a piano, I was in that same place again...My sister perishing right in front of me...and I couldn't do anything to help her..." The male shook his head, realising his emotions submerging once again. "...After that, I tried to study as hard as I can. I wanted to completely forget about the piano. It hurt too much..."
The girl mimicked the boy's lamenting face and patiently listened to him with heightened senses.
"...But I can't...I can never become a doctor, especially not a surgeon...I don't want to go through something like that again, even the sight of blood or an ill person make me sick...I can't be responsible for a person's life like that (Y/n), if anything happens...if I have to save a person's life I'll never forgive myself if they die, when they depend on me...Watching a person dying is probably the most helpless you'll ever feel in your life...I can't be the reason for someone's death." He lifted his head up to fully regard the listening girl. "My parents...they want me to inherit everything...the business, the hospitals, the job, I need to continue what they started but...I can't. Every time I go into hospitals and see people suffering in there, I'm at the brink of having a panic attack...I won't be able to cope...no matter how many therapists I go to, I just can't cope with the experiences of being a doctor...I don't want to inherit my family's business." The male gave an abrasive exhale filled with stress and pressure. "I can't do it...I can't operate on people, I can't even really be around them, I become so unstable...it hurts too much...it hurts so much."
Ren flinched unexpectedly as he sensed a ginger weight on his head as the girl slightly ruffled his hair. "What would your sister want?" The boy's mind seemed to go blank at the question.
With a small sniff, he swallowed down his grievances. "She would want me to be happy but...I can't do that...I can't be happy if I study surgery and operations..."
"Then I think you should continue with the piano..." The boy looked up at the girl an eager expression as she gave him a concerned gaze. "If your parents can't understand what you're going through them to hell with them...they weren't there when your sister died and they weren't the ones holding her in their arms...you can't do this to yourself." The male wiped away the last tears that remained brimming at his eyes.
"I need to prove to them...I need to show them that I'm capable of playing the piano...That all I ever wanted was to enjoy performing and creating music."
"And you will. They have to be deaf and blind to just ignore how talented you are Ren. I can assure you that you'll make them even prouder with your skills than any doctors degree would." The corners of the male's lips twitched as a smile began edging its way on his face at the warming words he received from the person who's importance rivalled that of his deceased sibling.
The musician placed the girl's hands against his labrum in a gentle peck and shot her his trademark benevolent smile. "I'll make you proud (Y/n). I only value your judgement over anyone else's. You're the only person that I truly need in my life." The female had to force on a negligible grin at the tokened comment, pushing aside her discomfort of the expectancy of his statement. "...Will you allow me to put the ointment now?" The female was reminded of what had been put under the gamble and she nodded in response.
She pulled back the nape of her shirt to reveal the bruise that still lingered on her skin like a crown of indigo flowers. Ren inwardly cringed at the mark he had cause not too long ago and gently began applying the cream with regret and shame enveloping his conscience.
"Have you been experiencing any long term pain with this? Has there been a burning sensation or irritation?" The girl couldn't help but lightheartedly sneer at the parental attitude that had undoubtedly been rubbed off on the male's medical delivery.
"It's been very irritating and it sometimes burns but it goes away when I put ice on it." The boy inspected the job he had performed as the treatment dried into the female's skin.
"Is that so?" He watched the girl's distracted and thoughtful form as she continued her mindful conclusion.
"Yeah, it's better than before but-" the female quickly flinched away as she noticed the boy's lips being tenderly placed against her wound. "Wh-what was that for?!" She warily eyes the boy's actions while he gave her an amused laugh.
"I wanted to kiss it all better. It always worked for me." The girl collected herself and exhaled with relief at the harmless action. "Does it feel better?"
(Y/n) hoped to deny his question, but felt her honesty taking the better of her as the petulant sensation on her shoulder disappeared, causing some easiness on the girl's flesh. "Yes..."
Ren handed a disburdened smile and stood up from his sitting position to move towards the keyboard. "I had bought this after we met (Y/n)...it felt so good to play again that I couldn't help myself...and I have you to thank."
"Me? But I didn't do anything." However, the dark raven shook his head to reject her claim.
"It was so good to play for someone again...to have someone listen and enjoy it as much as I do." It had seemed like a breath of fresh air to the boy to have another presence beside him as he performed. To disregard the loneliness that would accompany any other moment of pleasure that would cross his way, and for once relish in a moment of mutual pleasure. "Could you stay, for a bit and listen to me playing?" He noticed the female preparing on leaving the room, concluding their conversation as slowly ending. The boy felt an anomaly of the rhythm of his heart and gripped his thighs in anticipating hopes of a positive answer.
(Y/n) watched the sorrowful male as he hopefully watched her for a response. The girl scratched her head to ring some sense into her mind until gazing towards the boy with inevitable regret, less than inticed on the offer of staying, but more than dutied on comforting the boy. 'I'm seriously making the wrong decision here.' The female walked back toward the chair she had previously been seated in and, directed her attention towards the overjoyed musician. "Sure..."
