Chapter 56: Sufferings
(Y/n) was slightly taken aback by the male's serious expression and reluctantly nodded her head, allowing him to enter her abode. As he was permitted in, the boy closed the door behind him to fully regard the girl. "(Y/n), I want to get some answers." Jin approached the female's unassured form as she tried to contain the bulging pain on her burnt palm. She quickly picked up on the boy's unyielding aura, causing apprehensiveness to manifest itself to her gut.
"Can you come later. I'm busy right now." However, the boy made no move on leaving the female and focused his stern eyes onto her anxious form.
"No (Y/n), I haven't been able to have a moment of peace ever since..." His face contorted to feature disgust and repine of the memory that brought him so much discontent. "I want to know...I want to know who would do that to you...I want to know who it was." Jin approached the female who shook her head at the boy.
"I know what you're talking about, and I'm still not saying anything Jin. Just leave it." However, in contrast to her demand, she didn't receive the luxury of his grant as he remained in the room.
"No, I can't...I'm going crazy (Y/n), I can't stop thinking about it. You need to tell me, you need to tell me (Y/n), I can't take it anymore." He took small strides towards the girl, only to have her moving back at his pace.
"Jin, I said no. Just think of it as a dog bite and you'll be much calmer." The female attempted to dismiss the entire subject but received no compliance from the boy.
The male frantically shook his head, "No, no. Someone did this to you. Someone did this to (Y/n)." The girl pointed her attention at his fiddling fingers, laboured breaths and fluctuating gaze, taking the variables as bad signs.
"Jin, please calm down. Everything's fine, just keep cool." The female dared not to approach the panicked boy but neither one of her attempts of comforting him seemed to have a drastic effect either.
"Why would someone do that to (Y/n)? But why won't she tell me? Is she protecting them?" The boy flexed his fingers, causing a slight crack of the knuckles as they clenched them into his palm.
"Please, just listen to me-"
"I thought I was her friend. Friends are supposed to share, right...? Does she not consider me a friend anymore?" After speaking out his hypothesis, Jin directed his full focus on the female. "Am I no longer even a friend? Have I really grown this useless?" The girl took small, backward strides as the boy kept taking an approach towards her.
"Jin, just relax and take a breath man."
"So I'm nothing to (Y/n)?" As his paces brought him closer to the female, he placed his hands on her tense shoulders and gave her a perplexed look. "Why does (Y/n) not want to talk to me? Does she think I'm not going to understand? Does she think I'm going to be angry with her?" His fingers dug into the girl's deltoids, causing a wincing pain from the tightening hold. However, the boy paid little heed to her aching expression as dismay filled his every suspicion and dread. "Can (Y/n) tell me the person that did this to her?" The boy presented her with a gentle and faultless smile that seemed to cover a much darker means.
"Please, relax. We can talk and-"
"No!" Jin interchanged between his reposed state to an immediate noxious tone. "I want to know...I want to know who. If I don't, I'll go after all of them."
(Y/n) stared at the earnestness of his threat and speculated over how much of it seemed to be a bluff, and how much was a direct promise. "What do you mean...?"
"All of them...they're all trying to hurt you, I can't trust them. They'll all pay. If I don't know who it is, they'll all suffer." His hands gained an unnatural strength to them as they clenched her shoulders and throbbing wound, in a secure hold to keep her in place. "Tell me. Tell me. Tell me. Tell me or they all will see what true agony is."
Just as the girl felt her voice slipping away, there was a relieving sensation as the boy's hands fell from her shaking joints. Jin became bereft of breath as he began coughing in severing rhythms. His knees began tremoring under each heave of breath as his hacks became more critical. After a moment of vain attempts to regain his breath and stop the expectorate motions, he levelled with the floor. The male continued his frantic gags and unbearable chokes until he clung to his chest, trying to soothe his inflamed lungs and stinging heart. (Y/n) remained staring at him, speechless for a full minute until reality began acting on her instincts, forcing her to crouch down beside him and support the suffocating male.
"Jin! Calm down, just breath!" However, despite the boy's best attempts, his airway seemed filled with dust and dry particles that grinded against his sore throat. "Hang on! I'll get help." As the girl jumped up from her sitting position, she built momentum to sprint out of the door to call for aid but didn't manage a full stride before she felt a tug on her wrist. She looked down at the heaving male that had grabbed onto her articulation and desperately clung on. "Jin, what are you doing?! I need to get someone-!"
"Please...don't leave me." As he used his final, functioning breath to utter his plea, the girl felt the hold on her joint completely loosening as the boy fully collapsed in silence onto the ground. (Y/n) saw his eyes signalling an inevitable loss of consciousness, and she quickly fell to the ground and shook him to maintain his lucid state.
"Jin! Don't close your eyes! Stay awake! Stay with me! Jin!" Her words seemed muddled until only the blurry sight of her lips seemed to be the only indication she was speaking, the male felt himself slipping into darkness as his entire body became numb.
The female uncontrollably tapped her foot in anxiety as she hysterically waited outside the male's room until Kaito appeared from within. "How's he doing?" She focused all her attention on the boy as he emerged from his thoughtful state and considered her.
"He'll be fine. His body just shut down when it couldn't cope with the stress it was being put through." The male took off his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose as he felt his nerves rising. "What happened?"
"He just started coughing and then he just collapsed...I was so scared that he might have..." The girl lost her words as her anxiety took the form of the boy's weak body that she had previously been hysterically shaking when she felt a warm sensation on top of her head, directing her to look up into the reassured face of the intellectual.
"Don't worry, he's alright so you don't need to fret." He turned to leave the female to her lonesome until the girl requested his attention once more.
"Wait. Can I see him?" The boy turned to glance at her with a torn expression before sighing.
"Do whatever you want, it's not like I care..." He left the female to make up her own decision, allowing her to take a deep breath and grasp onto the handle of the room.
As she entered the domain, she was hit with the warm air of the area. Taking notice of the boy's laying figure on the bed, she approached the away-facing male and stood beside the edge of the mattress as she stared at his back. "Jin...? Are you alright?" Her response was given in the form of a slight nod. (Y/n) scratched her nape as she pondered on what she could say that would cause an effect on the boy. "So you're feeling better?" She received the same reply, diminishing her hopes of getting anywhere with the male. She prepared to leave the room until an idea popped into her head that might break through his barriers.
Jin heard a clattering and shuffling sound emerging from behind him, and afforded a glance to witness what the female was doing, only to see her shielding her act from his vision. He rolled back around as the girl turned towards him again, and reached over to place something in front of his face. The boy blinked a few times before realising she had given him a piece of paper and pen, and took the two objects to notice writing on the sheet:
'How are you doing?'
The teenager exhaled with slight gratification at the nostalgia this seemed to bring back to him and found his hand moving the pen onto the piece of paper, to create his reply. He handed the note back to the girl:
'Fine.'
(Y/n) sighed with a slight smile playing on her lips at the familiar answer and busied herself with writing her next question.
'Do you want to talk?'
Jin took a while to contemplate over her request and it seemed as though he would refuse her offer:
'Fine.'
The female watched the boy roll over to his other side to face her with a lamenting expression. She gave him a comforting smile before proceeding to sit on the edge of the bed. "So, can you tell me what that was about?"
Jin seemed hesitant as he bit down on his tongue in contemplation before shaking his head. "I don't want to talk about it..." The female tilted her head to the side and sighed at the response.
"I'm only asking because I'm worried...but I understand if you don't feel like talking." The girl got up from the bed, alerting the boy to be inclined to grab her hand.
"Where are you going?" He gave her an alarmed look as she proceeded to try and pull out of his grip.
"I came in to check on you. I'm done." She simply stated and tried to tug out of his hold.
"N-no...please stay." The male saddened at her retreat and pleaded with the female. "I don't want you to be near them...they'll hurt you." (Y/n) huffed and slipped her hand out of his.
"Jin, just rest. Kaito said that Ren will come and check on you when he gets back." After informing him, the girl prepared to take her leave until getting pulled back by his words.
"No, please! I'll...I'll tell you...I'll tell you everything you want to know. Just please...I don't want to be alone again." The girl gazed at the shredded male in front of her and felt her sympathy scratching at her heart as she walked back to the boy and sat beside him once more. He let his head hang down in a shamed manner and his whole body seemed slumped and sagged.
"...You can take your time, I'm not forcing you." But the boy rattled his head from side to side and slid closer to the girl.
"I want you to know...I want you to understand me (Y/n). I want to grow closer to you." He glanced at the female before sighing out his troubled nerves.
"So, what happened back there, I was scared you were dying?" The boy gave a light, amused smile, pleased that the girl showed some sort of concern over his wellbeing.
Jin chuckles slightly at the drastic conclusion she had come to and shook his head, "No don't worry, this happens quite often and most of the time it's not as serious as that." This seemed to intrigue the girl as she put all her focus on the male's explanation.
"What do you mean?"
"...Remember last week when we met up in the hospital?" The girl gave a bitter grunt but pushed her grudge aside for the sake of concentrating on the boy's speech. "I wasn't lying when I said I had come to get checked up...I've got a few problems with my health...quite a few." He acridly utter out his final words with much regret, further adding to the girl's concern.
"Problem with your health?"
Jin remained silent as the girl's question sunk in, forcing him to ponder over his decision on informing her on his position. "...Yeah. I've always had problems with my health..."
The girl slanted her neck to the side in inquiry over his meaning, urging him to continue his explanation.
"Always getting diagnosed with different conditions and ailments...always losing hope that I'll even live to my full life span." The brunet clung to his sheets like safety blankets as his eyes clouded with pained memories and words that still seemed to swim around in his head. "Even when I was born...for the first few hours they thought I was dead...and I think I was. I wasn't breathing," The male didn't risk swallowing the rising lump in his throat, afraid that it would cause another coughing fit from the action, "I didn't have a pulse. And even my weight was unnaturally light...but I lived. For some reason I survived...they had put me under surveillance but...that doesn't matter now."
He sighed out his displeasure at the reminiscent memories and clamped his hands together to ease his tense muscles and worries, while the female hung on every word he spoke.
"I was always alone...my mother was always so worried that something might happen to me, and it only got worse as the years passed. I was always getting sick and had to constantly be taken to the doctors until I felt like the hospital was like a second home to me...I remember, I was very little when I was diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia...it's when some of my blood cells have a sickle-like shape to them, which makes it harder for oxygen to be passed around the body and can sometimes block blood vessels...this can produce tissue and organ damage, and cause episodes of severe pain." Moments of memories flashed past his mind of the times he would suffer through the occurrences, his mind perceiving that his body was slowly dissolving, torturing his senses for minutes to hours on end, until he would forget what it felt to have a healthy physical state. "These pain would just continue and continue and continue...no matter how hard I would pray and hope them to stop, nothing happened. It still ached, it still burned, it still tortured...and just when I felt the relieving sensation that I would finally die, everything just stopped...I was still alive, I was still getting killed on the inside but everything was numb again..." The male's shoulders began lightly trembling as an invisible duplicate of the pain began spreading through his body, only stopping when he shook his head to ride the horrid thoughts out.
(Y/n) swallowed after realising her entire bodily functions seemed to have stopped for a small moment, as she tried to put herself in the boy's place. 'I can't imagine how that would be like...feeling like you're dying but in the end it never stops...'
Jin took in a deep breath and clenched his eyes shut for a second before exhaling to compose himself and proceed as normal. "It's much better now though...so it happens much rarely if I maintain the right diet and lifestyle...but it didn't stop there." There was a slight, but evident crack in his voice as his repressed the recollections that spurted out through his cracking mind. "When I was 9 or 10, I was diagnosed with -or, more correctly, experienced- Trigeminal Neuralgia...it's when a person experiences a sudden and extremely painful sensation in the face that can last from a few seconds to a few minutes...these sudden concussions..." He felt an itching and slightly pained sensation on the right side of his jaw at the memory, and had to suppress the placebo effect as he reminded himself it was not real. "They were so painful...like little electrical shocks running along the side of your face...I felt like my entire head would just break apart when they started...they used to be so frequent, sometimes happening five times a day and even the smallest thing could trigger them...sometimes they even happened without any coaxing. It's the result of compression of the largest nerve in the skull, which is supposed to tell the brain if your face, teeth or mouth are in pain...seems kind of ironic now that I think about it..."
The girl's eyes opened wider at the additional torment that had been brought on him and only seemed to further engender speechlessness when the boy gave a tasteless chuckle.
"It's funny really...it's mostly common for people in their 50s or 60s and there's only a 1% chance it can occur in people under the age of 20...I don't know if that's just life playing with me or..." He bitterly huffed and unclenched his fists that were unwillingly squeezing onto his covers until that instance.
"H-how is that possible...?" The girl unintentionally whispered to herself, earning a gruff scoff from the male.
"It's because of another condition, believe it or not...a year before that, the doctor said I had Multiple Sclerosis...a...-a lifelong condition that sometimes causes serious disability -thankfully, it hasn't come to that point- and can affect the brain and/or spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms and problems...hehe, is it bad that out of everything, this one is the least I have to worry about...?" The female noticed a small layer of tears brimming at his lower eyelid.
"Jin...it's ok if you want to stop here, I'll underst-" The girl silenced herself as the boy shook his head in a negative answer.
"No, I want you to know...I need someone to understand me...I need you to understand me. I've used to be medically identified with things like this almost every year...every year it would feel like I was one step closer to death, yet I wasn't given the pleasure of that." He turned towards the girl with collected expression and flashed her a secure smile before exhaling in displeasure. "After that, it got a bit better...for the next 7 years, everything seemed to become more stabilised, despite me having to suffer through the symptoms once in a while...I really thought everything would be normal again...I knew that there was no realistic chance that everything would go away, but I finally felt like I can function and have a normal life...I was so hopeful..." Jin seemed indifferent to the trails of salted moisture that glided down his cheeks, almost as though he barely knew he was crying. "And now...I've got another thing to worry about..."
The girl furrowed her brow at the implied claim as her own worry seemed to envelop her mind.
"These coughing fits...they're not normal and..." The boy gave a slight gag as he took notice of the tears spilling from his eyes and heart. "Now...the doctor h-he said..." He stumbled over his words as he sniffed and hacked out his pain, barely able to speak out the compacted sentence. "I might have Pneumonia...the good thing is that mine might not be contagious but...what's the point?" He placed his hand against his face as he released all the pent up mournfulness.
"Jin, don't say that. You can't just think that this will end you, you can still live your life-"
"No, (Y/n) you don't understand. I can't tell my parents or relatives about this..." This astounded the girl as she tried to think of any logical reasoning for his action.
"Wh-why?! You need to tell them, they might help you through it-" Jin began to chuckle at the girl's cluelessness.
"No...you don't know what's expected of me..." He sadly shook his head and refused to take his palms away from his face.
"What's...expected of you?" The girl inched closer to the boy as a means of comfort and concentrated on his side of the story. She gave the weeping male a minute to compose himself before he finally retracted his hands away, revealing the read strokes surrounding his eyes from the tear trails.
"...Since I was little, I was always brought up to look at my parents as an example of what I should become...almost my entire family work in some way with the justice system...my mother is a detective and my father works with the FBI...even my little sister is aspiring to become a judge, hehe." Despite his amused exterior, the boy felt himself diminishing both mentally and physically from the inside as he reminded himself of the pedestal that had been built under him. "My father wanted me to work in law enforcement...so, so much but...my ailments made it very difficult for me to live up to that standard. He knew that with the conditions I have, I won't ever be able to function as a police officer...but he tried so hard to tell me that I needed to, that there was no other choice, that...th-that he'll abandon me as a son if I don't reach up to that position." He brought his legs towards his chest and allowed his eyes to rest against either knee cap, as he begrudgingly remembered his father's words. "My sister is too young to understand so she doesn't know why I can't become part of the family legacy. My grandfather used to be a soldier so he sees my conditions as no excuse for me to stop trying...only my mother seems to understand what I'm going through...but that still doesn't stop my family looking at me with these same expectations."
As the boy's body began shaking with frustration, a crestfallen ambiance surrounded his form. (Y/n) gently rubbed the boy's back, giving him time to enter the correct state of mind.
"I'm still expected to become this important figure of the law and hopefully enter a higher rank but...I can't...no matter how much I try, I can't do it...and I can't tell my father that I might have Pneumonia or else he'll become so mad...so, so mad...he'll completely lose faith in me and...disown me." The boy coughed out his shamed and guilty tears with bitter regret, and lifted his head from his defeated stance. "My body won't handle that much...I'll put myself and people in danger and...I can't continue my family's goals."
(Y/n) shook her head in disapproval. "Jin it's alright if you can't do that. You shouldn't be living up to the standard of other people like this. There's one thing being encouraged and it's a whole other thing to be forced...Jin, are you listening to me?" After receiving no reaction from the boy during her analogy, she gained a response as he nodded.
"There's no point... I can't do it anyway...why? Why did life decide to play with me like this?" The girl huffed and prepared to contradict him before he continued speaking. "I've always tried my best...I've always been a good boy...yet even from the start I was made to fail." The female gave a slight and saddened shake of the head, "Maybe...I always think...it would have been better if I remained dead after birth, it would have made everything so much-"
"No! Don't you dare say that. Whatever you think, you don't deserve something like that." The boy glanced at his partner with a doubtful look. "Jin...in all honesty, you're probably the strongest person I know." The male seemed to perk at the claim and fully turned to address the sincere girl.
"You think...I'm strong?" The female filled with hope, as an honest grin spread across her face.
"You've suffered through a lot in your life because of...complications. You've had to deal with the physical torture of your body while still being put under pressure by your family, and beating yourself over the head with this ideology that had been placed on you. But even years after that, you managed to work past the difficulties with little hope, and built up a normal life for yourself. If I was in your place, I would have probably given up from the start and never managed to create a normal world for me to be in...but you did it. You've tried your best to work past these issues and kept yourself well. You really do seem to have tried your best and for that, I can always admire a person"
The boy sat up from his fetal position and looked at the girl beside him as she patted his head supportively.
"I don't think just anyone could have done that, and whatever your parents say I think you've accomplished more than what you believe." As the girl have him a gentle pat, she felt limbs swathe around her waist as the boy placed his head on her shoulder, allowing himself to cry against her.
"You think I did something right?" Despite the girl's surprised position, she nodded in confirmation and returned the boy's embrace. "You think I'm strong?" He received another nod. "You don't see me as a failure?"
"Jin, you've done all you can to get to where you are right now. Don't force yourself into pigeonholing your future, and don't give up hope on life like this...my grandmother used to say 'things can always get worse, but they will always get better.' And I believe that to be true." As the boy's silent weeps slowly faded to the girl's words, he retracted back to give the female a gratified smile and proceeded to place his head on her abdomen, while still withholding a secure grip around her.
"Thank you (Y/n)...you don't understand how much this means to me." He closed his eyes as his mind slowly began fading away from consciousness, leaving only his physical state in place. 'You truly don't.'
The girl stood still for a few seconds, expecting the boy to move by his own accord at any interval, but after receiving no advance she chose to confirm her suspicions. 'Did he fall asleep?!' She attempted to remove the male's unconscious state off of her, only to have him stir each time. After taking slight pity on the exhausted boy, she opted on simply allowing him to use her as a cushion for the only time. After sighing out of frustration, she scratched her head while looking around to see if she would find an object of distraction, but spotted no such luck. 'I guess...I might as well also take a break then.' After shrugging and inwardly scolding herself, she leaned back into the pillows, permitting her body to relax as her mental state also entered a world of slumber.
