Chapter 30: Protect
(Y/n) felt a horrible chill coursing through her skin, visually shaking from the sheer force of the vibrations. Kenzan clearly noticed the distressed body language and frowned down at his friend. "What's wrong? Is the ice-cream too cold?"
(Y/n) shook her head dismissively and entered a thoughtful state. "No, I've just been getting these weird chills all of a sudden. It's been bothering me so much, and this time, it was such a huge sensation!" Kenzan also seemed to consider the girl's words in a concerned manner.
"You know, some people say that these things are omens of upcoming danger. If you've been having them for this long and severe then there must be something pretty big and horrible coming your way." Despite the boy having a worried and distressed expression, (Y/n) simply snickered at that claim.
"You know I don't take these kind of things seriously. It's probably because of the sudden change of weather, and my body thinks I'm still in the summer time." The girl stretched her arms out in a relaxed manner and took another lick of her ice cream.
"If you say so...wow, it really hasn't changed has it?" Kenzan stopped at the threshold of the girl's house and stared up at the all too familiar building. "It's just like I remember it...do you still have those Mew Mew posters in your room?" He amusingly grinned towards the embarrassed girl.
"No! I got rid of those years ago!" She shouted at him, making a quick mental note to take the posters down if she ever invited the boy over.
He chuckled and patted the girl's head to sooth her. And to his delight, (Y/n) melted into his touch like a kitty. "I'll see you tomorrow (Y/n). Keep safe."
"I'm always safe, I can take care of-" she nearly choked on her own words when she felt the warm lips of the boy touch her forehead and as they pulled back, stretched out in a wide smile.
"Like the good old days, right?" With a small chuckle, he left the paralysed and flustered girl to process what had happened and felt her knees shaking from the pure shock of the action. It seemed like an eternity had gone by when she finally regained her composure and stumbled towards her house, with many thoughts and emotions swirling around her.

"And remember not to use the stove. You know you can't cook with it, I know you can't cook with it, just use the microwave and hopefully that will keep the house in one piece." (Y/n) rolled her eyes at the number of security rules, she had to take account for and remember, that were being sent her way.
"I know gran, I'm not that clueless." She interlocked with the elderly woman in a cuddle. It's been only 2 hours since (Y/n) had come back from school and experienced one of the best moments in her life, and now it all seemed to be shadowed over with the departure of her grandmother.
When they parted, (Y/n) could see the slight coat of tears in her grandmother's eyes and she herself felt a bit emotional at the departure. "And don't forget to go buy milk and puppy kibble for that little dog you think I don't know about." The elderly woman cheekily ordered the astonished girl and headed towards her awaiting taxi.
"Y-You know about him?!" (Y/n) tried to figure out how her grandmother could have known about the animal.
"Dear, I've seen you at your best and your worst, you really think I wouldn't find out about a dog living in the backyard? I'm not blind just yet." After the pair chuckle at the situation, it was finally time for (Y/n) to say goodbye to the elderly woman. "And look after yourself, I'll still ask for an explanation of what happened yesterday." (Y/n) waved at the withdrawing cab and waited in the chilled air for a few moments to fully grasp the idea that her carer was gone.
With a heavy sigh, she looked towards her lonely house and thought over what to do. "I guess I should get groceries while it's still light out." The girl called up the puppy to join her on the visit to the corner store and took some of the assigned money she was left with and went on her way.

"Alright, buddy, now it's time to search up on Google how to make you some proper puppy food." The small dog yipped and circled around its owner's legs, impatient over the upcoming treat it's going to get. "And since there aren't any adults in the house, we can binge eat as much as we like! How does that sound?" She was with the expectation of seeing the small dog perform its usual hyper bounces, but instead she heard a low and warning growl emerging from its throat. The girl looked down at the angered animal, wondering what had been said that distressed him, but realised that its menace was pointed towards something off to the side. As (Y/n) trailed the animal's gaze she noticed a certain figure standing at a distance away from them. Only when the girl stopped her watchful eyes on his face, did recognition take form.
"Hi again, b***h." The girl almost dropped her bought goods at the sight of the -ex- gang member that confronted her the previous week. She tried to put on a stronger front, similar to last time but seemed ineffective due to her beginning reaction. "You think, just because Hiroko's got your back, that you're safe from me?"
Fenrir began frantically barking at the male, making the boy snort at its attempts to seem dangerous. (Y/n) quickly scooped up the pup in her arms and took a step back from the male. There were no people around the area to give some sort of security that he won't do something, so peacefully tried to walk away from the male, when he calmly blocked her way. "My God, there's no end to the harassment you give me. What do you want?" She cautiously watched the boy's every move to try and figure a way out of the situation.
"I want some payback. I'm not jut going to let a little girl one-up me like a dog." The butch student glared at the girl when he struck with an idea as he looked at the snarling animal. "Speaking of dogs, what have we here?" He made a move to take the boisterous creature but (Y/n) dodged his grasp before he had a chance to take him.
The girl quickly made a b-line to pass him, but almost toppled when the male quickly grasped her arm. "Let me go!" (Y/n) dropped her bag of goods, hoping that 'Lady-Luck' would smile upon her one more time, and swiftly spun around in an attempt to deliver a punch to the boy's face. Despite her best swing, the male caught the girl's fist before coming into contact with his front, and gripped her hand. (Y/n)'s view switched into a panicked expression as she tried to tug her arm away, but the ex-gang member had a pleased look and a tenebrous chuckle sounded from him, at her unsuccessful effort.
"This might be fun after all. I've always had a thing for feisty chicks." (Y/n) grimaced at the boy's words and made a desperate, final attack as she kneed the boy where it would hurt the most. This seemed to have a subsequent effect on him and so (Y/n) took the chance to execute her escape. "B***h!" The female had only made it three or four feet away when she realised she misinterpreted the boy's recovery time. The assailant appeared right behind her in the matter of seconds and (Y/n) felt a pressure grazing her ankle, forcing the female to stumble forward from the unbalance and tumble to the concrete.
While the dog struggled to escape the girl's arms and protect his master, (Y/n) held on tightly to the barking animal and looked up at the malevolent boy with a warning scowl. "Just leave me alone! What's your problem?!"
"You're more trouble than you look. How about you make yourself useful for once." He looked down at the frightened girl as a few thoughts came to mind on what he could do with the vulnerable teenager. He took a slow and dragging step towards her, forcing the female to reflexively move away.
"Don't come closer!" She knew it was a pitiful and desperate attempt that would bring no outcome, the female was more than aware that the boy was stronger and more manoeuvred than her. "Just leave me alone!"
The ex-gang member prepared to bend down and make his first move when a piercing bark erupted from thin air. At first, he was taken aback by the sudden sound and wondered if it had come from the baby dog that was still wriggling in the girl's arms. The same loud, sharpened outburst came out, alerting the assailant of another's presence. He turned to the direction of the noise and as he took a glance at who the person was, all colour seemed to drain from his face. His previously confident and predatory stance seemed to minify and visually appeared to be on the verge of being sick. (Y/n) follows his horrified gaze and was also astonished
Alex stood a few feet away from the two, his usual neutral outlook being replaced with one of loathing hatred. The boy was holding onto the leash of the Anatolian Shepherd who had a very similar snarl on his features as he carefully watched (Y/n)'s assaulter. When the delinquent made the first move of escaping the scene, Alex let go of the large dog, allowing the animal to sprint towards the male at unbelievable speed.
It took (Y/n) a while to process the action, and when reality finally hit her, she turned towards the horrified screams of her attacker. Her blood froze at the sight of Oberon using his powerful jaws to tear through the boy's clothes and skin as he attacked the upper half of his body, unsuccessful with his endeavors of shielding his vitals. The ground soon became painted in red, crimson smears coating the dog's mandibles and paws. This made (Y/n) snap out of her paralysed state and lunge for the dog's leash before he had time to bite down on the boy's neck. "Oberon stop!" But despite her pleading request, the animal continued clamping onto anything that could be grabbed, exposing more of the male's wounds and weakening him. As adrenaline filled her blood and muscles, (Y/n) performed a final attempt at successfully tearing the attacking animal away, and harshly smacking him on the snout. The action finally seemed to cease the dog's advances, but the creature still kept an alert stance, preparing for any sign that could grant him permission to finish the job. "Oberon stop it! Bad boy!" She dragged the dog at a safer distance and then turned towards the unmoving body of the mangled boy, to notice Fenrir also opting to follow the large animal's lead. "Fenrir, don't you dare!" The dog stopped in its tracks and shamefully walked over to his master, giving out grieving whines. (Y/n) made sure that the dog wouldn't go on his bloodthirsty rampage once more and quickly approached the immobile, bloodied form, desperately hoping to see some sign of life. "Man, are you alright?!" She bent down to check on his wounds and put him in a more comfortable position, but didn't even come to that chance when she felt herself being pulled away.
"Don't touch the filth!" Alex held her tightly and harshly stared down at the girl with disapproving eyes. (Y/n) looked at him, speechless at the actions he had used so far, taking umbrage at the male's indifferent outlook.
"Alex, what are you doing?! We need to help him-" (Y/n) was about to rip away from the angered boy's grip, but his hold was cast iron, and she could only drag her feet as he impetuously trailed her in the opposite direction. "Stop! Alex, please! We can't just leave him!" He ignored the girl's pleas of aiding the noiseless ex-gang member. He whistled for Oberon and Fenrir to follow the departing pair, while (Y/n) continued to struggle against him. "Alex, this isn't funny! He could be really hurt! He could die!"
"Good." He delightfully spoke out and tightened his hold on the girl. He couldn't understand why the female was glaring at him with such furious disapproval, and felt shamefully insulted with the glint of fear in her eyes.
As they turned a corner, (Y/n) attempted at getting a proper foothold against the ground, and hope for friction to grant her an upper hand over the powerful male. "Stop it! At least, let's call an ambulance, please!" She received no response but was simply tugged further away.
After a few minutes of scrambling, (Y/n) making no real progress against the boy, she finally had enough of being ignored. "Alex, would you stop and listen to me?!" She screeched at the boy with all the frustration she had gathered, finally stopping him in his tracks. He turned back around towards the incredibly upset girl, now in his usual composed manner. She panted for a few seconds, figuring out her next words and regaining her composure, "Please, we need to go back and check up on him. No one could come out of something like that without serious injuries."
"That's what I'm hoping." (Y/n) was rendered speechless at the response she received, and wondered if her friend was hearing himself. "He almost hurt you. He deserved every minute of that."
"What he deserved was nothing like that! He didn't need to be ripped apart!" As she said this, the sirens of an ambulance emerged from one of the roads and passed the pair of teenagers. Relief flooded back to (Y/n)'s features, "Thank goodness. I hope that's for him." Alex stared at a delighted girl, his mind still wrapping around the girl's reaction to the whole incident. He wondered what he had done wrong. He had protected her just as he had promised, and was returned with disapproval and fear. He couldn't understand why (Y/n) was feeling such pity for someone who was so close to damaging her, yet she was more worried over their wellbeing.
"I won't let him hurt you." (Y/n) began building up her rage at the male's overprotectiveness, "He might be fine now." She bit down on her lip, her jaw trembling from the pent up aggression inside her, "But next time, I'll-"
"Enough!" (Y/n) shoved the boy away, and due to his surprise at the sudden aggression, he let go of the female. She stood still, a few feet away, wondering what she should do next. She knew the male only meant to defend her and was done in good spirit. But there was something about how relaxed and welcoming he seemed towards the whole situation that made her unnerved over the whole experience. "You can't do that Alex. What you did could potentially affect him permanently in a physical and mental way. And as much of a scum he is, he didn't deserve that." Now with a more calm and levelled attitude, she tried to speak some common sense into the boy. After a few moments of careful analysis from his side, Alex walked up to the female and took her hand, leading the way to her house in silence. (Y/n) sighed at the lack of a reaction, but knew there was no point in pushing the subject further.
They walked in the quiet isolation. (Y/n) would occasionally see another person on the path and avert her eyes to the floor in guilt, under the delusion that they would spot her derelict conscience and what had gone down not too long ago. Every time she looked towards Oberon, the female found herself nearly gagging at the sight of blood that still stained the dog's snout and fur.

(Y/n) let out a shaking exhale as she was now standing in front of her home and Alex noticed her hesitance at retreating back inside. "Do you hate me?" The (h/c) haired female was a bit surprised at the question.
"No..." Despite her attempts at sounding genuine, (Y/n) couldn't convince her voice to speak out in an honest tone. Alex slightly bowed his head to the ground, the lack of sincerity stabbing him on the inside. "J-Just...make sure to be a bit lenient, ok?" She called for her animal partner and entered her house when she understood the boy want going to say anything.
Alex was left for a long while to stand still in his spot, contemplating his actions, his breath becoming more and more laboured with every second. His teeth clenched tightly to the point of causing pain to his gums, but he took little notice to the sensation. When he caught himself panting harshly, Alex decided it was time to leave.
On his way back, he continued to dig his nails into the palms of his hands, causing bruises at first, until the lunula pierced the skin. However, he barely took notice of the drops of blood trickling down, until Oberon began licking his hands to sooth his master's wounds. The boy's mind started wondering off to the girl's assailant, remembering his words with disgusted anguish. "He will never have her. She wants me to be lenient?" He bent down to pat the K9's head, smiling pleasingly at the blood that still covered the dog, and he knew he would never be able to keep to that promise. "We need to clean you up when we get home. We need to look good for dear (Y/n)."
