Chapter 21: Not Sorry Enough
Once maths was over with, (Y/n) got ready to fulfil her promise towards the blond male and decided to wait for him outside the class room. Ryo and his partner were noticeably slow packers and (Y/n) had to lean against the wall in order to patiently rest while they gathered their belongings. While they were finishing up with little expeditiousness, she heard her name being called out to get her attention. She turned in the direction of the noise to spot a familiar face. "Ren? How's it going?" She took notice of the happy expression the boy held and wondered what might have got him so cheery.
Ren ends his stride beside her and takes her hand, "Come with me." It was a sternly, kind request and with ought waiting for her answer, the musician began tugging (Y/n) away. She attempted to halt in one spot but simply ended up skidding and skating while Ren remained oblivious of her struggle and continued to literally drag her along.
"R-Ren, sto-!" Through her stuttering she tried to reach out to the boy to stop him but his mind seemed to be in a completely different world.
When the male had finally stopped, it was in front of the music room. While (Y/n) was laboriously catching her breath, Ren entered the room to wait for her to regain composure. After she was done hyperventilating, (Y/n) followed the raven into the class and saw her teacher and the boy expectantly standing by for the girl. 'Am I in trouble?'
"(Y/n), don't stand there, you're welcome to come in." Mr Shima politely gestures for the hesitant girl to enter the room and walk next to the musician. "As you know, the Halloween dance will be coming up in October and so, I'm sure you're aware of how talented Ren is so I asked him if he can use his potential and talent to perform during the celebration with the help of an assistant." (Y/n) gave Ren a congratulating look and then looked back at the soft-spoken teacher.
"That's great and I'm sure he'll do an amazing job...but is that why I was brought here? To hear the news?" Mr Shima smiled at the curious girl and shot Ren a mischievous look that, to the obliviousness of the girl, made the boy's cheeks gain colour.
"Well, Ren here said that he will agree to perform under one condition. Can you guess what that is?" The music teacher showed the girl a cheeky smile that only confused the female further.
"I-I'm sorry Sir, I don't know." Every passing second only seemed to intensify the boy's bashfulness. And he was almost certain his teacher was doing it on purpose.
The music tutor smiled playfully at the clueless girl and decided to relieve the boy, "Well, Ren here said he will do it if you agreed to be his assistant." (Y/n) looked towards the embarrassed boy, even more muddled.
"T-That is if you want to. I'll find someone else if you're not up for it." However he did in fact hope that (Y/n) would agree to the condition.
But (Y/n) wasn't certain what her job would be and she wasn't much of a musician herself and wasn't clear of the curriculum she had to endure. "Well, I'm not sure Sir-"
"Listen, you won't have to do anything difficult if that's what your worried about. Just helping Ren out with preparing the piano and watching over his equipment and booking a place in the Halloween performances for him. And a few minor things and you're done. I'm sure Ren will really appreciate and enjoy your help." His kind attitude only added weight to his words and encouraged the girl, while the boy next to her was catching the smug smile his teacher was sending his way.
"S-Sir..." The student hissed out as quietly as possible so only the other male could hear him. The teacher only seemed further amused at the harmless, paranoid embarrassment Ren was enduring.
"Well...I guess I can try. I don't want to inconvenience Ren with a stranger so I'll do it." She enthusiastically adds and smiles at her new partner. Ren grinned down at girl and felt his blood migrating back to his cheeks when he heard Mr Shima chuckling at his reaction.
"Alright, thank you (Y/n). I'll have you start your work right now since we need to book a place for him until Monday. This note will explain everything to Mrs Maya and she'll hopefully give you more information on what you can do to prepare. Good luck (Y/n), come back to help Ren when you're done with that." He handed her the note and despite being slightly overwhelmed with her new duties, she took the paper and thanked her teacher.
Outside of the room, a pair of ears were overhearing this new information and grinding their teeth at the motivation in the girl's voice. 'This is taking a very steep turn for me. Is he going to end up being another obstacle?' Ryo looked back at the cobalt eyes of the other boy. He looked back at the blond with an aware expression, familiar with what his friend was thinking.
'Great, now I have another one to look out for.' Both the males heard approaching footsteps and silently ducked behind a corner as to not get noticed. (Y/n) emerged from the room and headed the other way to Mrs Maya's office to undertake her job.
Ryo's happier side seemed to take a step into the darkness to let his menace take over. 'So she left me for him...that's alright, it doesn't bother me. It's not like she was obligated to hang out with me. She even said it was uncertain.' But despite his best attempts, convincing himself that her abandonment wasn't a big deal, seemed impossible. He felt somewhat betrayed by someone he truly counted on. He sensed a loss of presence and turned to see Bako retreating back at a random direction. "Where are you going?"
Bako paused with ought looking back at his friend so as to not reveal the darker intent in his eyes. "I have a few nuisances to take care of. I'll see you after school." With that, he left Ryo to his own woes.
After a bit more contemplation, the blond moved away from the wall with a dim look in his usually bright eyes and retreated to find Kaito to hang out with instead and distract himself.
Back in the classroom, Ren couldn't help but mention the abasement he had to endure thanks to his teacher. "S-Sir. I-I would really appreciate it if you don't give me those looks. You've completely gotten the wrong idea." However, he was betrayed by the still-present redness in his cheeks.
The older man chuckled at him and sarcastically rolled his eyes. "Oh, my bad then. I would have sworn from your eagerness to co-operate with her was due to a more deeper reason." The teacher was satisfied when he saw the student's face glow further, despite his obdurate attitude.
"No, it's nothing like that I swear." Ren took a moment to compose himself and prepared to leave the room, only to have his efforts in collecting his bearings erased by his teacher's words.
"Be nice to her Ren, she's a good girl. I hope what you're planning works out." Ren pretended he hadn't heard those last comments and said goodbye to his teacher.
'I hope so too.'
After (Y/n) had received and wrote down details needed to prepare for the performance, she prepared to go back with the new information. 'How do I keep ending up in these situations? It's like this week has been nothing but the twilight zone.' She sighed and grunted at the realisation that she hadn't eaten this lunchtime and neither did she have a packed lunch to satisfy her. 'It's just Friday, everything will end and I'll have the whole weekend to myself.' She was on her way to find her new 'manager' and inform him on the curriculum but had to change her plans when the bell sounded. 'I'll just give it to him next time.'
Her history lesson was as normal as it had been before Jin had come along but seemed a bit more solitary without him. But it ended relatively quickly and it was time for her to head to her science class for the last hour of her school day. There, she met up with Bako, where he seemed to have a malignant air about him. However, the moment he noticed (Y/n) was staring at him in a concerned demeanour his attitude changed like the flick of a switch and greeted his partner with a smile. "You seem bothered? Is something wrong?" She looked at the boy, trying to figure what he was obviously shielding.
"No, everything's fine now that you're here." Despite her doubts, she dismissed her unease when he gave her a sweet and nonchalant smile. "So, what happened at lunch? Ryo and I were very confused where you went." (Y/n) uncomfortably stirred in her seat, remembering how she ditched the two boys with ought an explanation.
After giving him a small and quick breakdown of the events that occurred and apologised for her inattentive behaviour to their feelings, while the boy simply comforts her worries and shakes her guilt off.
The lesson was prolonged because of a 'whole class detention' due to a few children's misbehaviour. This both annoyed but also relaxed the girl since she was now given time to think of her words more carefully. By the end, (Y/n) built up the courage to go up to the cheerful blond and try to apologised and excuse her actions. Despite the sweat building up in her palms, she was positive as to where he might be hanging around after school. So when the bell rung she gave slight hesitation in the speed of her packing to prolong the moment of her shame. "Wait up for me, I'll come with you." This seemed to calm (Y/n) considering she might get some support and help from one of Ryo's friends if her explanation was to fail. But her hopes plummeted when the teacher stopped the boy from leaving.
"Bako, I'll just need to go over a few things with you for the upcoming science test since you're new and all. If you could stay behind and I'll review a few things with you for 45 minutes. Is that alright?" Bako momentarily glanced at (Y/n) as if contemplating if he should reject the offer.
"Uuhm, sure. I'll stay behind. Sorry (Y/n)." He disappointedly referred to his partner with a downhearted look.
"It's alright, good luck." After exchanging farewells, (Y/n) started making her way towards the secret room.
After she was sure no watchful eyes were speculating, she walked up through the empty hall towards the obscure 'Broom Closet.' Her suspicions were confirmed when the slight push of the handle forced the door open.
However, upon entering it was discovered how dark and clocked everything was inside this new world, that once seemed as charismatic as its ruler. (Y/n) quickly scanned outside to make sure none had seen her entrance and closed the door. When she went over to flick on the light, she felt her leg hit a slightly metallic object and roll to the other side of the room. As the bulb illuminated the room, (Y/n) saw that it wasn't as empty as she had originally suspected. "Ryo?" The boy was laying down in the centre of the room with a can in his hand, looking like his mind was in a completely different world. When (Y/n) looked about herself she noticed the whole room was scattered with cans that were evidently empty. She knelt down to inspect the tin and discovered it's contents: 'Beer? How many cans were in the fridge?' She looked back at the blond who currently seemed barely conscious. She walked over to him and clicked her fingers in front of his disoriented face, which brought some light back into his eyes. "Ryo? What happened?"
At first, Ryo looked at the girl as if encountering her for the very first time in his life. But momentarily after hearing her voice, the male began grinning like a goon, "(Y/n). Hi angel, how's your day been?" (Y/n) cringed away at the intoxicating smell that originated from his mouth.
"Are you drunk?" (Y/n) looked around to come to an obvious realisation of why the empty beer cans were spread around. 'He must have went through a dozen of these...' Ryo chuckled at her reaction and propped himself up on his elbows.
"You're so much trouble angel. Why can't you just keep to yourself?" His speech was slurred and heavy, clearly influenced by his intoxicated state. (Y/n) shook her head to subliminally scold the boy and grabbed his arm.
"Come on, let's go and get you some water." She attempted to haul him up but despite her upper body strength, the boy just slumped against her. She gave up in her struggle, seeing how little motivation Ryo had to get up.
"Come here and join me. Better yet, be a doll and get me another drink. Should be some in the principal's office, I saw his secret stash but ssshhhh, mum's the word." He began tittering and earned another scornful look from the girl.
"Ryo, I have to go now, but I came here to apologise for leaving you at lunch." Ryo mechanically stopped his laughing fit and remained motionless for a while, making (Y/n) believe he had some sort of mini-stroke. "Ryo? Listen, I'll explain the details where I was when your more sober, ok?" When she got no response from the boy, she prepared to get going but found herself immobile. When she looked down, the female realised that it was because of Ryo holding onto her arm. After a few tugs it was apparent he wasn't letting her go. "Ryo?"
"You think a simple 'sorry' will cut it angel...?" With one swift motion he pulled on her arm and the girl found herself on the floor, with the male loitering over her. "You're so cruel angel...you break my heart." With effort that wouldn't be associate with an intoxicated person, Ryo restrained (Y/n)'s wrists to the ground with great force. Soon, natural instinct dawned on (Y/n) and she began kicking to knock off some of his strength and balance, but only forced him to fasten her hand more firmly. "Are you scared (Y/n)...? Hahaha, the face you're making is so cute~" the blond's body shook with amusement, while the girl under him began breathing heavily. "Come here. Show me how 'sorry' you really are~" just as (Y/n) built up the courage to speak out her rejection, she didn't get the chance. She was silenced, before a sound could escape, by her assailant's lips contacting with her's. The act was rough and rushed, and gave her a chance to taste the alcohol percentage in the boy's intoxicated breath. She was too shocked and paralysed to react at first, all she could do was scream in her head but no sound translated in reality. After Ryo had relaxed his offence on her lips, he pulled back a few inches from her face with a smirk. "Can I keep you~?" With ought hesitance, he proceeded with his forceful kisses to only snap the girl out from her stunned state. With her physical movement restricted and her voice none existent, she had only one option that could guarantee at least a slight chance of her escaping. "OW!" Ryo reflexively pulled back and let go of the restrained girl's right wrist to place his hand to his bleeding lip. Before he can realise what happened he felt a sharp sting on his cheek as a loud slap echoed through the room.
(Y/n) quickly ripped her other hand from Ryo's grip and sprinted towards the door, and swung it open to run out into the empty hall. Ryo was left to hear the girls footsteps fade into the distance.
The boy stayed stunned for a few minutes and massaged the sore spot on his cheek where (Y/n) had contacted him with her palm. The male spent a few moments to clear his mind and shake off his muffled state. He touched his lips as the realisation of his actions emerged into his conscience. "I'm sorry."
(Y/n) kept on running with the occasional stumble due to her blurry vision. As tears began pricking at her eyes and limiting her sight, she somehow managed to run out of the building and lean against the school gate, near the entrance. She used her resting spot to gain composure and calm her beating heart and panicked mind. After 3 minutes of stabilising her breathing and relax her muscles and mind, did she notice a figure standing a few feet away. Her first thought was that it was Ryo, so with ought much thought, she swung her hand as self defence but got it blocked by the person that had been standing beside her. She relaxed once again when she discovered that it wasn't Ryo that had been standing by her.
"(Y/n)?" Alex stares at her with an expression that was mixed with confusion and astonishment, as he took in her shaken appearance and alarmed expression.
"Alex? H-how long have you been standing there?" She tried to avert back to her more neutral attitude but pointlessly failed, shown from the doubt showing on the boy's face.
"What happened? Who did this to you?" The newcomer moved closer to the girl so as to inspect any physical damage on her.
"I'm fine, everything's alright. Let's just go." (Y/n) tried to take a step towards the exit but was stopped by the boy.
"Who did this to you?" His voice was stern and his question was serious and blunt, watching her rigorously with his dark violet eyes. He looked back at the school and his features slowly contorted into ones of anger and enmity, "Are they still in school?" With ought waiting for her answer, he made a move towards the school with an atmosphere of animosity taking over his body. But before he got a few paces towards the building he was halted to a stop when (Y/n) grabbed his arm.
"No, nothing happened. Just leave it." The girl tried to sound stern and convincing but it didn't seem to change his attitude.
"Then why were you crying? Who upset you?" This time around, his aggression was pointed at the (h/c) haired female in order to get an answer from her "Tell me." She quickly searched in her brain to think of a response that sounded plausible enough and masked the true events.
"I just...got my Geography results and they were way worse than what I expected. Sorry if I look like a crybaby now, but I take my tests way too seriously." She showed an apologetic and innocent smile to elude further away from the original story and seal her mendacious talk as truth.
Alex watched her closely, trying to pick up on any clue that could contradict her reasoning. After a few seconds of further analysis he visibly calmed down and soundlessly took the girl's hand and lead her out of the gate. "Don't worry me like this." He quietly spoke out the request but managed to be heard from the girl.
"Well just don't worry about me, I get upset over the stupidest things so don't take it so seriously." She jokingly told him but her words didn't seem to fully sink in or be taken critically from the boy. They walked in silence for most of the way home, with (Y/n)'s mind occasionally flickering back to Ryo and his actions, wondering if she was just panicking too much or if her fear was a smart precaution. However, the girl decided not to think about it at that moment since she noticed her guard sending her glances every once in a while.
She was greatly relieved when she was finally at her home and could get a moment of piece to properly think about the occurring events. Alex felt greatly disappointed when he no longer felt the girl's hand in his own, leaving the breeze to chill the warm feeling away. "Thanks again for the walk home. Goodby, and be safe." She waved at him and proceeded to enter her own property.
The boy then walked away when the girl was safe inside her house. 'She's hiding something.' When he was at a fair distance from the girl's home, at a secluded part of the neighbourhood, he could no longer keep the pent up anger inside and his fist stroke a nearby wall. 'Someone hurt her. I wasn't able to protect her.' When he thought back to her distraught state and crying face, it acted like a punch to the gut. 'And she cried because of my carelessness.' The silent boy continued on with his walk in quiet contemplations. 'This won't happen again. I'll make sure of that.'
Time Skip
(Y/n) was lying awake in her bed, deprived of a sound mind by the scene that had happened earlier that day. 'He was just drunk...I shouldn't hold it against him, that could have happened to anyone-' her thoughts were disturbed with the familiar ring of her phone, which made her wonder who would be calling her at 2 in the morning. When she checked the number her heart sank when she recognised it as the same digits as Ryo's. With hesitation, she swallowed and decided to answer the phone, "Hello?" After her words, not a sound was heard on the other line. Whoever the person was, stayed silent and reluctant to speak. "Hello?" She repeated once again but was answered with the same blanc response. She waited for a while but didn't even hear the person's breath from the other side, as if they were intentionally holding in every noise that could be made. "Ryo, is that you?" A beeping sound was then heard to tell the girl that the person had hung up. She waited for a few moments as if trying to convince herself that someone was still on the other line and could hear her. "You idiot..." (Y/n) set her phone down and tucked herself back under her covers.
Meanwhile
Ryo chucked his phone across the room for it to land in the corner. He groaned at his actions and smacked himself in the head. "What's wrong with me?" He placed his hand gently on the cheek that had been unfortunate enough to come in contact with the girl's hand and then touched his wounded lip from the inflicted damage out of the female. The male seemed to bathe in his guilt and regret over his actions, and couldn't seem to escape them. However, his anger towards his actions and his stupidity were undervalued at that moment. He was more disgusted of how good he felt when he thought back to what he did to the girl. The mere thought of her indulging his desires seemed to quicken his heart rate and send his mind to wonder off in more untouched corners of his imagination. 'This is messing me up...I'm such an idiot.'
