Chapter 17: A New Side
(Y/n) was a bit surprised to see an empty seat next to her own in her History class. She tried to think back to her last encounter with Jin and he seemed fine at the time but the vacant space seemed to contradict that.
During the lesson, her mind wondered to what might be the reason for his absence but just the regular stuff seemed to come to mind. She sighed, deciding it was no use in beating a dead horse, so she spent the rest of the lesson with her mind wondering only a few times. So when class had ended, she decided to continue on with her schedule. Furthermore to her break time, she spent it with a few past friends she hadn't had the proper time to converse with in a while. And with the twins gone, (Y/n) didn't feel like she was cheating on their friendship in any way.
"Actually, (Y/n) I think you're the one that has a few things to speak about~" Nami winked one of her silver eyes at her friend and bumped the clueless girl's shoulder.
"What?"
"OH COME ON! We know you've been hanging around with the new students, best to share the slightest bit of gossip with some old friends." A brown haired girl with pigtails and vibrant golden eyes piped up before Nami could speak a word. Despite Summer being the eldest one of the three girls, her mindset was half her age so she would always react in over the top ways to especially intriguing news. "So (Y/n)! Why not tell us what the fresh, good-looking meat is like?"
"Did you give her her medicine this morning?" (Y/n) amusingly question Nami about their brunet friend.
"Don't avoid the question with jokes, we seriously want to know what's going on." The violet girl politely reverted back to the subject matter, leaving the (e/c) eyed student to look up in thought.
"Well, what else is there to say. Their human-"
"There must be more than that! Come on, what can you tell me about the blond one!" Summer stared dreamily into the distance, presumably thinking about the boy she had questioned about.
"Well, I know he's 16 from what I can remember. He's name is Ryo....he is practically best friends with all the boys -even that arrogant jerk- and is pretty much always with a smile on his face." She begrudgingly spoke her previous partner's presence and after finishing, thought harder about anything she might have missed out.
The bubbly girl's dandelion eyes shone at the new information and squealed her trademark yelp, making half the students walking by them jump and stare at the hyped up senior. "That's so my type! This could end up being something greater than I had ever imagined! Anything else you could tell me?!" She stared at her friend, eyes wide with hopefulness.
"Well....." (Y/n) thought harder at what she else could say and was reminded of a few things. "I'm more than sure he loves Drama and the Theatre. And from what I can tell, he enjoys classic and modern literature. And.....he likes platapie." Nami cocked her eyebrow at the last line but the bouncy girl was pleased with what she had learned.
"Say no more (Y/n)! I can finally live happy!" An array of imaginary stars swirled around the dazed girl's head and memorised everything she was told. "Daaw! But I might be too late anyway, seeing how you've taken him first." She slouched and melted in her own despair.
"What do you mean?" (Y/n) thought about the malarky Summer was saying but couldn't catch on to the meaning.
"Not only this Ryo boy, but the others too." Nami giggled with a slight blush decorating her gentle features.
"What are you talking about? I don't get it." The befuddled girl looked at each of her friends in turn but saw nothing that would give a hint as to what the meaning behind their words was.
"Don't tell me you haven't noticed it, dear. The new students seemed to be growing quite the fondness towards you."
"AND THEY SEEM TO BE STARTING TO LIKE YOU!" The bubbly female paraphrased the previous girl's statement.
"Yes...what Summer said. We mean, I saw that blue haired boy making ogle eyes at you, and then Summer noticed on more than one occasion that quiet green eyed boy smiling at you while you weren't looking." Summer was in (Y/n)'s history class and had the habit of spying on other people whenever she would get bored. She gets bored a lot during that lesson. "And she also took note on how Ryo would always appear anywhere you were, almost like a shadow. And I've spoken to another girl saying how this Kaito fellow is always thriving for your attention, and I myself have seen how that boy Ren would always hold this gentle nature while you're around and would constantly try and spend time with you. And from what I heard from my brother, that Alex guy is none stop looking out for you after school since the first day they came here." Naomi's brother was part of the Osamu gang so he had the convenience to notice what had been going around school and hear about the poker-faced boy's encounter with one of the members the previous day.
"I don't remember Alex looking out for me from the beginning. It was only two days ago." (Y/n) looked at her friend's worried expression.
"That's not what I heard." Nami stayed silent before exhaling and deciding to speak again, "Anyway, you seem to have quite the fan base now dear. Yet you don't seem at all bothered or excited."
"You guys are just exaggerating. They probably hang out with me because 1: I'm not one of their fan-girls, 2; Some of them are my partners, 3; I helped them out a few times and 4; Am I just not lovable~" she made a convicted grin to her self-compliment.
"Come on, lay off her. She'll get the hint sooner or later." Summer chirped to her lavender friend.
"In her case, it will be later." She joked back, making (Y/n) puff out her cheeks in irritation. "So, you want to come and hang out with us at lunch, we'll save you a seat in the dining hall." (Y/n) would have immediately jumped at the idea of eating with the two friends but then some guilt struck at her heart.
"I might but that's not certain." The two girls looked at each other and questioned their friend's proclamation. "I just might have other plans I might prioritise, but I'll eat with you two tomorrow if I don't come, alright?"
"What are you going to do?" Summer jumped in her face and pouted.
"That boy, Kaito wanted me to come to one of the reading rooms for some reason, probably to torture me," She grunted at the mere thought of being in the same room as the lateritious boy. And to her displeasure, she noticed her friends giving a knowing smirk to one another.
Despite their confusion, the two female students understood (Y/n) and decided not to push her on. Soon enough, the bell had rung and it was time for the trio to part ways.
(Y/n) distractingly walked to her science class, with her friend's words lingering in her thoughts. It would be presumptuous to only take the opinions of two people on the matter and the student knew that, so she decided it would be best to keep an open mind about this.
After entering her classroom, her azure-eyed partner grinned at her. He noticed her bothered expression and felt concern as to what might be troubling the girl. "What's wrong? You seem distracted." He pointed out the obvious when (Y/n) took her seat.
"Nothing....hey, you don't have some sort of crush on me, right?" (Y/n) said it in a joking way, as if the very idea of the new boy taking a certain liking to her was preposterous and unthinkable. However, her doubts were slowly diminishing as the silence grew between her and the boy. She agonisingly stood staring at the blank expression of her partner, anticipating his response. "D-dude? Come on, it was just something pointed out to me. You know an assumption. Y-you can deny it...." Bako remained wordless, considering the question. The (h/c) haired student began inwardly panicking at the possibility of being crushed on. 'It's not that it's not flattering, especially from a guy like him. But, he's not the one......damn it, I hope this doesn't mean I have to reject him and make everything awkward! We were just starting to form a good friendship.'
"No. I don't hold such feelings for you." It was a blunt, dry and flat response with Bako feeling his conscience tugging at him. After his answer, (Y/n) could finally stabilise her breathing again and laugh uncomfortably and apologise for asking such an unusual question. "Who made you think that?" It sounded like an innocent request at first glance, but his voice harboured a more calculated undertone, cloaking his words in a much more important demeanour.
"My two friends mentioned that you and your friends have been acting very fondly towards me. So I just wanted to get a straight opinion from you."
"I see. Who are these friends? They're not the twins so who else is there?" Bako blood turned a few degrees higher at the prospect of (Y/n) hanging around with so many people. She was getting too friendly with the variety of students in the school and his temper was escalating thanks to her involvement with so many of the teenagers.
"They're just two other friends that I occasionally hang around with, so I don't get to see them too often." (Y/n) laughed at the old memories she had with the gentle, violet girl and the seniors.
"Well, tell me their names, I might know them." Bako pressed on for information on who the (e/c) eyed student had been talking to.
"I doubt it, one of them doesn't socialise too much and the other is a year ahead of us, so it's not likely you would know them, especially since you're new and all." The boy gritted his teeth and repeated the question. "One of them is Nami and the other is Summer. Ring any bells?"
Of course, the boy knew none with such names, "Hhhmmm, maybe. I think I might know them, what do they look like?" The deeper change in his tone began giving away at his ulterior intentions and (Y/n) began to catch on to the contradicting manner he was speaking with. Bako quickly smiled more gently, minimising the girl's doubts and urging her to continue.
"One of them has dark purple hair and greyish white eyes, sort of a flint colour. And the other has light brown hair that's always in pigtails and has bright yellow eyes. Do you know them?" Bako quickly put all the description securely in his head and turned to the female with an apologetic smile.
"No, I was thinking of someone completely different. Sorry." (Y/n) shrugged at this when another thought came to mind.
"Why did you want to know?"
"I have a few people who always play pranks on me and then use fake names to spread rumours. It used to happen quite often at my last school so I was worried they might have followed me all the way here." The two students snickered at the prospect of a creeper following the boy from one school to another, just for the sake of being a creeper. The teacher gave them a quick look of disapproval to calm them down and continued on with their lesson.
Time Skip
"Hey want to join me for lunch, I would really like it if you kept me company." The male secretly crossed his fingers for a positive answer this time around.
"Sorry, I actually have something planned." She shot him a sorrowful smile and stood up just when the bell rang. "Bye!"
"W-wait! What are you going to do?! Hey!" But (Y/n) didn't hear him and continued to run out of the door. A bit disheartened, another idea came on. "Actually, this might still work in my favour." He got up with a dark grin plastered on his features.
Nami lazily walked towards the lunch hall with Summer nagging behind her. "And then I told her: 'that's not how you make a Long Island ice tea' and the she has the gull to say 'well, I don't think it's made with a whole banana just put in the cup.' Can you believe her, Nami?!"
"Yes, Summer. I get you." She distractingly answered her annoyed friend. "Let's just go and get something to eat, ok."
"Excuse me?"
The two female students turned towards the voice to look into the deep, blue eyes of the new male student. Nami figured who he was and inquired on what he needed.
"Are you Nami and Summer. Friends of (Y/n)?" He smiled at the two girls.
"Uh, yes. Can we help you?" Both the teens seemed muddled at his sudden appearance.
"Oh, you can help me a lot." He began walking towards the two girls with a stride. "You see, I've heard you've been saying things to (Y/n) about me. I don't like that." His strides were slow but heavy, in a predatory manner and the girls started squirming back at the boy's charging nature, wondering when he even changed so quickly from a polite looking student to the dominating guy standing only a few feet away from them. Before they could even think of making an attempt at escaping, Bako blocked their way and even the air-headed brunet gulped a few times to calm her rising panic. "Now, I would like to have a little talk with you two. Just to set some boundaries between what you say and when you speak to sweet (Y/n)." The two girls looked at each other in horror.
Kaito walked around the hallways, the regret of his actions on his shoulders. 'What came over me? Why would I do something as inefficient? Though I cannot deny, seeing those (e/c) staring up at me was quite exhilarating, especially mixed in with the fear- what's wrong with me?!' The boy shook his head in an attempt to rid himself of the unusual thoughts. He reached out for the handle to one of the empty reading rooms and turned the nob. 'I should really take some sort of medicine for this. That stupid girl is getting to me.'
"Took you long enough! I was about to leave." The crimson male stared, wide-eyed at the girl he was previously thinking of. She was sitting on top of one of the tables, swinging her legs in boredom while holding onto a book she picked up. "Well? What did you want?" She looked at him, annoyed with his dumbfounded look despite him scaring the life out of her for this.
"You're here?" He was astounded that the girl would even consider coming after his performance in class. "I can't believe you actually came." Despite saying this to her, it was more of a wonderment for himself.
"Neither can I, but I'm here. So, what did you want?" Placing the book down, she turned to him in a cross-legged position expecting his answer.
"Well, I....." Kaito took a moment to smooth over his features and take in the full situation. "I requested for you to come because of your appalling efforts in class: you don't listen; you get easily distracted; you day dream way too much; you have no concentration; you can't spell to save your life and frankly, you don't know what the true essence of social studies is. If you act this irresponsibly and distractedly in all your other classes then- are you even listening to me?!" Kaito angrily glared at the female who was staring at a bird just outside the window. She got brought back to earth when she felt a smack against her head with a thick object.
"Ow! Don't abuse the book like that!" She glowered at the boy with irritation. "And I don't lose concentration. I was pretty focused on my work this morning." She crossed her arm, defying the boys words.
Kaito sighed at the girl's actions and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "You have the attention span of a fish, you think your concentrating but I bet you didn't even notice when you started doodling at the corner of your book."
"I don't doodle!" (Y/n) offendedly punched the boy's shoulder.
"And you have a very confusing temper. You don't know when to be angry or how to express it." Kaito calmly rubbed his shoulder, to encourage (Y/n) to relax as well.
"Says the person who was ready to kidnap me if I hadn't come here." The boy inwardly growled at the remark and huffed. "Listen, if you're just here to criticise me, I might as well go." (Y/n) jumped off the table and took a step towards the door when an arm clasped around her waist.
"Wait! Alright, I'll keep the 'insults' to a minimum. Just don't go." The (h/c) haired female got ready to scold him when a new emotion replaced the one of hassle. She started smiling at him in a mocking manner, tugging at the boy's own nerves. "What?"
"You really are a lonely little boy." Kaito unwrapped his arm around the girl and pretended he hadn't heard the statement.
"Are we going to start or what?" He sat down on one of the available empty chairs and adjusted his glasses.
"Start what?"
"I'm going to help you improve on your concentration and memory span. So sit down." (Y/n) walked over to the table and was preparing to jump back on. "On a chair, if you may." Kaito annoyingly told her.
Taking a seat next to him, she made herself comfortable for the exercise. "Alright let's see if this works then."
Meanwhile
"I hope I made you understand my concerns. Just keep in mind, if I find out you two have been taking up (Y/n)'s precious time, especially with nonsense like this, I will be forced to act upon it." Bako towered over the frightened lavender girl and her senior friend. They felt a rush of relief as he removed himself from their personal space, allowing fresh oxygen to enter. "Oh, before I go. Do either of you know where (Y/n) might be. And don't try to lie, I will catch on." He spoke in a playful tone adding on to the threatening atmosphere. Terror arose back into the girls and they glanced at one another to ponder as to what they should do, while Bako calmly smiled at them, his cobalt eyes harbouring a much more shady persona.
"Ow! Is this really supposed to condition me to pay more attention?" (Y/n) rubbed her temple from the blow she received from the ruler Kaito was holding.
"Necessarily not, but it helps me to vent." (Y/n) glared at him only to have none of her daggers penetrate the thick exterior of arrogance.
"Why are you even helping me, you must have other, better things to do than waste your time with a 'stupid girl' like me?"
"Because...." For the first time since he proposed the question, Kaito realised he truly has no reason to do such a favour for her. It didn't make any sense for him to help her, especially when he had nothing to gain. Thinking back to it, his offer came out of nowhere, even for him. (Y/n) waited patiently for the answer he doesn't have. "Reasons." He simply said and continued on jotting down notes on a piece of paper for her.
"Reasons?"
"Yes, I have my reasons." She figured she wouldn't push the matter seeing how there was little likelihood he would give these 'reasons.'
After a few moments of silence, (Y/n) thought about how she should break the ice, "So....have you known the guys for long?" The boy's face contorted in confusion as to who she was suddenly bringing up. "I mean Bako, Alex, Jin, Ren and Ryo. You guys seem to be close."
"Oh.....I'm personally not too close with any of them beside Ryo." The (e/c) eyed female perked up at this and a gust of curiosity began carrying her away.
"Ryo? Why are you closer with Ryo than the others?" Kaito remained silent, acting like he never even heard the question. "Oi, I know you heard me, come on, tell." Still silence. "Alright, if you're going to ignore me, then I'll do the same." At first, the girls retaliation didn't seem to phase him but as the seconds passed by, he grew more and more irritated with the lack of her attention. A few times he would attempt to speak with her and even whacked her on the head, however, the stubbornness she showed only expanded.
'Well played (Y/n).' After a few seconds of careful decision making, Kaito sighed and fully turned towards the distracted girl, "I was never a very social kid." (Y/n) turned herself with a self-satisfied smile, awaiting the story. "You really are a brat......but I digress, when I was about 8 or 9 I enrolled into the same school as Ryo. My parents weren't very rich at the time and I began studying there because of my exceptional grades. So I was constantly surrounded by wealthy little brats that would occasionally pick on me because of my class."
"Get up you hobo. This is where the kids who actually pay to come here sit." Kaito looked up from his book to glare at the two boys that seem to especially like bothering him out of everyone.
"You all must really be bored in order to succumb to giving me your precious times. How pitiful." The 9-year-old smirked to himself which irked at the two bullies pride. One of the two smiled slyly and ripped the novel Kaito was reading from his hands. "Hey! Hand me that back, you have no right to take it!" The nettled boy stood up and prepared for a confrontation with the pair of rich kids.
"Lay off. Since your so smart you probably memorised the whole things already, plus we needed some fuel for my parent's fireplace. This will do the job nicely." As the boy taking ownership of the book held it out in mid-air, his accomplice holding back Kaito from tackling him.
"That was a gift from my father! Let it go!" The smarter kid commanded. The passing by children could do nothing but look at him in pity. They knew better than to interfere the higher classed students, especially when they were related to the vice principle.
"You want it back? Then beg." The kid threw the book to the ground and pressed his foot on the hard leather, cover. The child who previously claimed ownership of the book could only look away, his stubbornness in complying with their wishes getting the best of him. "No? Ok then." The opposing child got ready to drag the pages across the floor when he was sent flying off. He landed head first on the dirt, enraged, he looked back at who had pushed him off.
On the ground stood a younger looking student with messy, curled, sandy hair and joyful chestnut eyes. "Oops, did I get ya?" He goofily grinned at the fallen bully who was holding a venomous stare. "I'll take that as a 'maybe.'" He quickly hopped on his feet, brushing the specs of dirt off, holding onto his mischievous smile.
"You dumb blond! I'll have you expelled for this!" The fallen boy took his assistant's hand to pull himself up. However, the younger male kept on grinning from ear to ear at the two seniors, fearless at his approach. He picked up the slightly damaged but still preserved book and dusted it off. "Give that back! That doesn't belong to you!" The aggravated assailant started going red in the face from his rage, the golden male's grin never faltered for a second.
"Nor to you. I saw everything, this is his book." He gestured towards Kaito who was simply staring in amazement at what was happening. The newcomer stared the richer kid up and down for a moment, "That's one of the more expensive uniforms isn't it? Your parents must have spent a fortune on that."
"Yes, I deserve nothing but the best. And my parents were more than willing to pay the high fee of this brand and-"
Flash
The male was silenced at the flash of light and the sound effect of a camera. "I wonder how they would react if they saw your uniform so messy and muddy." The wealthy child looked down at himself to just now realise the horrid condition his fortuned clothes had taken when he was pushed to the ground. "I don't think they would be very proud of their son." The cheerful boy held up his phone to show the HD picture he had taken of the bully in his entirety.
"Y-you did it! It's because of you! Which means you'll get into even more trouble when I tell my aunt about this!" However, the dominant student took on the air of submission and worry when the brown eyed junior still presented a cheeky grin.
"Actually, you might be surprised to hear that I'm not right here right now. At this point in time, I'm in the middle of a calligraphy class." Seeing the two opposing assailant's faces contort from confusion into horrendous realisation was a pleasure that could not be replicated. "I think you'll find I have a lot of people who would vouch for me. Your not the only ones with ties~" he mockingly waved the phone around to only add to the rich boys' displeasure. "And don't even try to blame it on him, because right now he's in the midst of the technology club." He pointed at the surprised red-headed boy who was staring up at his underclassman in awe.
The outwitted boys glared at the blond one last time before sprinting the other direction. Kaito watched at their retrieving forms when a shadow loomed over him. "I think this is your's." His helper handed him back his novel and gave him a hand to stand up.
"Thank you..." Clearly not accustomed to showing gratitude, Kaito shyly took the book back.
"Wait....yah I know you! Your that genius kid that gets top marks in everything!" Kaito looked away, embarrassed at his fame. "Dude, you're like a prodigy around my class." The bubbly youngster smiled and took the crimson haired seniors hand in a shake. "I'm Ryo. Pleased to meet you, Kaito!"
After that, Ryo would continuously follow the ruby haired student around. Even piping out of nowhere in the most random of places such as a dumpster. On the other hand, Kaito didn't seem to mind the tailing from the younger student. He had never had many close friends in his life, especially someone with as much charisma as Ryo, so it felt refreshing to keep an airhead like him at hand.
Soon enough, as the years went by, they formed a small circle of companions with four other males from the school. Despite him now having quite a few personal and close relations, Kaito seemed to show a much fonder side to the boy that was the first to show him kindness and look at him like the true friend.
"Ever since then, we have just been a simple little group. Ryo helped me more than anyone else. For that, I'll always be thankful." Kaito looked back at (Y/n) who has been listening intently to the whole story.
"I see. So you never really had too much attention before Ryo came around." Kaito bitterly nodded and watched her reaction. "You and Ryo huh.....? I ship it~" She felt another smack across the head and clenched the throbbing spot.
"Did you completely miss the point of the story?! Damn it, you really are a stupid girl." It was his turn to feel a rough pressure on his cranium. He was surprised to see (Y/n) had taken claim of her own ruler and had smacked him with it herself. For a moment, Kaito was stunned but then retaliated by smacking her upside the head again. "You don't hit me."
"Then you don't hit me!" She returned the attack but got her wrist held by the boy. She then used her free hand to tap him on the head which escalated to the two wrestling each other and laughing at their own fails.
Kaito began feeling a certain type of warmth directed at the joyful girl. It had been a long time since he last laughed this wholeheartedly and couldn't help but start smiling for a different reason. It's true Ryo had made his days more bearable and disambiguate, but he had never felt as ebullient with anyone the way he did with (Y/n). She was the only one that he truly needed to make his time worthwhile and perhaps that's why he called her out here.
'She needs to be mine. I want to have her by my side at all times, no matter the cost. I'll have her with me at every hour, making all my loneliness go away and one day I'll seal her to me.'
"Kaito? Dude, I've stopped, you can let me go." (Y/n) relaxed her muscles to signal her surrender.
'I'll never let you go. You've stamped your fate the moment you took pity on me. Now, you'll see how stubborn I can really become.' Kaito loosened his grip on the (e/c) eyed girl's wrists but refused to let them go. He sweetly smiled at her which surprised the female but she returned it with gratitude.
The door burst open and slammed itself on the wall corresponding to it. Both (Y/n) and Kaito jumped at the sudden hostile entrance. They both discovered the intruder to be Bako, who held a scornful gaze towards the two students in front of him. He's eyes bore daggers into Kaito, who only glared back. The azure male slowly entered the room with a fixated look of disappointment and disapproval. (Y/n) squirmed back at the toxic ambiance encasing her science partner.
Bako shot a look towards the girl's hands that were still being held tightly by the boy. "What are you doing, (Y/n)?"
