Chapter 42
"It's you!" The man screamed in the utmost fear. Gripping the chains wrapped around the man's limbs were the two angels, their faces expressionless as they lowered the man closer to the lava below.
"It's you! It's you! It's you! Augustine is looking for you!" The man cried out once more, his voice growing more hysterical by the second.
"What?" I asked in slight disbelief before halting the angels in their actions. "What do you mean, she's looking for me?" Raising a brow, I stared down at the man. In any other circumstance, I would have rolled my eyes at the man's claim.
'No shit Sherlock.' I scoffed mentally. 'I'm a fugitive conduit who not only broke out of Curden Cay, but has also taken out an army of D.U.P.s, destroyed a public street after coming face to face with an undercover D.U.P., and am also housing my fellow fugitive counduit inside of an apartment that I've broken into. Why wouldn't Augustine be looking for me?'
Looking up at me with tear filled eyes, the man shakily continued. "D-Director Augustine, s-she n-needs you to come b-back to Curden Cay!"
"Why?! What could she possibly need me for?!" I asked in a mixture of anger and fear. After all I had gone through, there was no way that I'd let Augustine lock me back up in that hellish nightmare she calls Curden Cay.
"S-She didn't say...."
With a grunt, I prepared to signal for the angels to resume their lowering of the cowardly male. Of course, I wasn't really going to let him burn to death. Hell, I didn't even know if virtual lava could actually burn someone let alone kill them. But he didn't know that, so what's the harm? Besides, wasn't this the same man who intended to not only rape me, but kill me as well? Compared to that, what I was doing was just a little way to encourage this man into giving me some much needed information.
Just as I was about to lower my arm in command, the man hastily screeched out "B-but she did say something about your powers! That's why she order a few of us to go undercover, to see if we could find and retrieve you!"
"So, you weren't going to kill me?" I asked skeptically.
"....She never said that you had to be alive...." The man replied without thinking, to which I responded by having the angels lower him once more.
As the male's body inched closer to the fiery sea below, the severity of his words finally hit him and without a second to loose, he began to spill out the full story. "She only needed your blood! Your body! Anything that could let her extract the genetic code for your conduit gene! But that's it! I swear! Please, please don't let me burn to a crisp! I-I'll do anything! ANYTHING!!!!"
With a sigh, I waved my hand again, this time signaling for the angels to pull him up. As expected, the two winged creatures obeyed and reeled the man upwards by the chains. Careful as to not lose their grip, the angels floated back over to the platform before chaining the man to the two pillars once more.
"You know," I spoke in a low tone as I approached the now sobbing man. "I should just kill you."
"N-no! Please don't!"
"But," I cut the man's pathetic pleas off. "I'm not like you or Augustine. I don't take pleasure in seeing others suffer."
Again the man cried out, only this time he did so with happiness. "Oh, thank you! Thank you!"
"BUT-!" I shouted once more, growing irritated at his constant interruptions. "That doesn't mean that I'll let you go free. You still attacked me and have done who-knows-what to others as well, none of which I see as being sympathetic. So I'm going to leave you here until my friends and I can figure out what to do with you. And trust me when I say this. NONE of them are going to be as merciful as I am....especially Delsin...." Without another word, I spun on my heel and made my way back down the path. As I headed back towards my two fellow conduits, I couldn't help but become submerged in my own thoughts.
'Just what is Augustine planning? More importantly, just what am I going to do?'
