Chapter 15 - Glitz, Glamour & Contemplation

A/N - Hi All!  Sorry this update is a bit late!  Life has been crazy these last few weeks, and this chappie is longer than most others - its almost double, so it took me longer to edit, etc!  Sit back, grab a drink, get cozy, and enjoy!  Hope you like it so far.  Yes, the pic above is one of her dress!  Thanks for all the feedback and support - please keep it up as your wonderful comments keep me going (through some nasty-assed writers block!).   Don't forget to vote too!  THANK YOU!!

After Boxing Day, the rest of the week seemed to drag by.  Finn was feeling much better – and she was glad.  He'd been up and out of bed when she'd gotten home after the Boxing Day dinner, and had even put on some clothes, telling her that whatever was ailing him had mostly passed, and that he was fine.  Needing some fresh air after spending the entire day in bed, he'd even managed to go to the deli around the corner to grab dinner for himself.

She'd taken the week off from work, and somehow felt as if she didn't know what to do with herself.  Finn had taken the week off too, but neither had planned anything special nor specific to occupy their time, figuring they'd just relax and play it by ear.  Rey had suggested that they rent a car to get out of the city and maybe go for a hike, but Finn had just shaken his head – saying that although he felt better, he wasn't up to spending an entire day outside in the cold.  She was disappointed, but completely understood.  Had she been sick in bed for an entire day, she probably wouldn't want to go for a hike in the cold either.  Instead, she looked for ways to fill the time.

On Monday she'd taken down the tree and took it out to the composting area, as well as putting away all of the Christmas decorations that were scattered around the house.  On Tuesday, she tackled the laundry and some of the more mundane household "fix it" chores that she'd either been putting off or hadn't had a chance to do.  By Wednesday, she thought she'd die of boredom.  It seemed to be affecting Finn too, the two of them almost prowling around each other in the apartment.  By about 10 AM, he declared that he was going into the office for a few hours to keep up with work.

That pissed her off.  He didn't feel well enough to go somewhere with her but he was okay to go to work?  She couldn't help feel a bit slighted by that once again.  Even though they'd agreed to try harder and communicate better, they were still dancing around one another, and it seemed as if they couldn't even find something to do together to pass the time.  Sighing in frustration, she decided that she needed to get out for a little while too.  A walk seemed like a good idea.  It was a brisk day, but the sun was shining brightly, so she figured some time outside would do her good – hopefully helping to soothe her agitation and clear her mind.

After bundling herself up and heading outside, she wandered around aimlessly, once again thinking about the status of her relationship with Finn.  Despite their discussion from the week before, she still didn't feel like his heart was truly in it, that there was no apparent difference in his behavior between then and now.  What the fuck?  Why was he being like this?  If he really wanted to make things work, she would've thought that something would have been different.  That he'd be more attentive, more attuned to her, more willing to just sit and talk – about everything and anything – like they used to do so long ago.  But unfortunately, that was not the case.

She couldn't help feeling a bit depressed by her current situation.  It seemed as if no matter what she'd tried, nothing was working.  She could only hope that their trip to the Bahamas would somehow rejuvenate them – and their relationship.

Looking up from her musings, she realized where she was.  Holy fuck.  She was in Ben's neighborhood.  But he lived on the other side of the downtown core.  Checking her phone, she realized that she'd been wandering for over an hour, and that her feet had taken her here.... A mere 5 minutes away from his building.  Her toes were cold, her fingers were numb, and her nose was fucking freezing.  Might as well text Ben...

'Hey. You at home?'  she messaged.

His response wasn't immediate, but she kept walking towards his building.  After a couple of minutes she could see the little dots appear, letting her know that he was texting her back.  At worst, if he wasn't home, she could hop on the T and make her way back to the apartment.  'Yes. I was just getting some work done.  Why?'

'I'm kind of right outside...found myself in your neighbourhood - unexpectedly.'

'Oh.  Come up then.'  He replied.

'Almost there.  I'll buzz you when I'm out front.'

A few minutes later, she was knocking softly at his door after he'd buzzed her into the building.  His eyes widened when he took in her appearance.  Her nose and cheeks were red from the cold, and she was clearly shivering.  "Holy shit!  Did you walk here?"  He asked, moving aside so she could come in.

"Yeah."  She replied.  "I didn't mean to come this far.  I was thinking...and just kind of got lost in my head..."

"Jesus Rey – are you crazy?  Its freezing out there!  Go sit on the couch and I'll make you something warm to drink."  He admonished.

She frowned at him.  "I'm fine Ben – just a little chilled.  But something warm would be nice, thanks."

He practically growled back at her, grabbing a blanket and wrapping it around her once she'd removed her coat and was seated on the couch.  Giving her a stern frown, he retreated to the kitchen to prepare her drink.  "What had you so preoccupied?"  He called out.  "Or should I even ask."

Sighing, she wrapped the blanket around herself a little more tightly.  "Same.  Finn."  She swallowed.  "I thought things would be better now.  Last week we had what I thought was a good talk.  But it feels like nothing's changed.  And it seems like he's really uncomfortable being cooped up in the apartment with me."  Her gaze flicked across to him.  "He was so bored he decided to go into the office today."

Coming out of the kitchen, he held a steaming mug out to her.  "Hot chocolate."

She smiled, as he sat beside her on the couch.  "Thanks."  She said, blowing on the liquid to cool it a bit.

Her eyes met his.  "I guess I'm just....disappointed."  She sighed.  "I don't know what to do any more.  I don't think I'm being overly sensitive about this, but for the past few days its almost seemed like he hasn't really wanted to be with me.  What does that even mean?"  She asked frustratedly.

"I don't know Rey.  Did you guys plan to do anything this week?"

"Noooo."  She responded carefully.  "Shouldn't we be able to play it by ear?"

He nodded.  "Of course."

Inhaling deeply, she looked into his eyes.  "Fuck.  I just don't know anymore Ben.  I don't understand.  I literally gave him an out last week – and he didn't take it.  So, if he really does want things to be better, why is he still acting the same?"

"How exactly is he acting?"  Ben asked curiously.

"Detached."  She replied, shaking her head.  "He's very detached.  Not engaged at all.  And more jittery than usual – but that's probably just the boredom."  Taking another sip of her drink, she sighed.  "I just don't get it."

He studied her for a minute, before saying.  "I don't know what to tell you Rey.  I'm sorry.  I would think that – like you said – if you two talked things over, and he wanted to try harder, that you would see some difference – given that its really only been a few days.  But... "  He sighed.  "I can't even guess where his head is at...."

Her eyes were shining a little when she looked across at him again.  "It just doesn't make sense....I don't know.  My head hurts – I'm tired of trying to figure it out."

"Hungry?"  He asked quietly.  "I can make us some PB&J sandwiches.  They'd go good with the hot chocolate."

Laughing, she grinned widely.  "Sounds great.  Somehow, I never expected you to eat PB&J, but you always know exactly how to cheer me up."

"Its not that hard."  He fired back on a smile.  "All I have to do is mention food...and I happen to like peanut butter."  He snickered.

"Touche."  She responded.  Looking down into her mug, she took a deep breath.  "Thanks again, Ben.  For listening.  And letting me barge in and disrupt your day."

He gave her a rueful smile as he gazed across at her, shaking his head.  "Anytime, Rey.  You know that.  Anytime at all - whenever you need me, I'll be there for you.  All you have to do is ask."  He shook his head, adding emphatically.  "You're not alone, Rey.  Remember that."

"Neither are you."

****

Throughout the rest of the week, she continued to ponder her relationship with Finn, trying to come up with novel ideas and ways for them to reconnect with each other again.  However, he seemed to be in a much better mood when he came home from his impromptu visit to work that day, his good mood persisting right through this morning.

It was New Year's Eve day, and later that evening they'd be attending the Gala that Leia was hosting for her foundation.  Rey was currently in the process of getting 'beautified' for the event and jumped at the feeling of a finger sliding between her toes.

The nail technician looked up, giving her a dark frown, tightening the hold on her foot in response to the sudden yelp and uncontrollable jolt which almost caused the tech to smear polish all over Rey's big toe.  "Stay still please."  She admonished firmly.

"I'm sorry."  Rey giggled, looking over at Kay and Rose in the chairs next to her.  "That tickled."

"She's a pedi-virgin."  Rose explained loudly.  "Don't worry Rey, after a few times, you eventually get used to it."

Rolling her eyes, Rey responded.  "This is not something I'll be doing regularly!  I can't see the need to spend $45 every few weeks to keep my feet pretty.  Nobody ever sees them!"

"Pretty toes are sexy."  Rose explained.  "And every woman should feel like she has sexy feet."

Rey looked down and frowned.  Honestly, who the fuck cared whether their toes were sexy?   Considering a bit more however, she supposed she could see it if one's partner had a toe fettish... It's not something Finn had ever seemed to pay attention to.  But, maybe she should consider keeping this up – for a little while at least.  She'd be wearing sandals and flip-flops in the Bahamas....and maybe Finn would like her to have pretty feet...

Glancing over at Kay, Rey noted that her cheeks were a bit red.  Feeling a bit devious, she asked.  "Does Ben have a toe fettish?"

Kay's face went positively scarlet.  "Um...I'm not sure that it's a fettish.  He told me once – a long time ago - that I had pretty feet."

Studying Kay's feet, she agreed.  They were dainty and feminine, her toes set off prettily by the pale pink polish she'd chosen.  "I can see why he'd say that Kay – your feet are pretty."

Looking down at her own, she decided that they definitely were not.  Her feet were generally an afterthought to her.  She kept her nails trimmed and tidy, but she practically lived in safety boots – so they really were always hidden – her toes not exposed by pretty shoes.  She had no need for pretty feet – other than tonight.

She'd been thrilled when Kay had called to ask if she'd like to join them for a day of pre-Gala primping.  Rey had had no idea what she was going to do for her hair and make-up, so when Kay had offered her the opportunity to get a mani-pedi, as well have her hair and make-up done she'd jumped at the chance.  It was costing a small fortune, but this event seemed sufficiently special to somehow warrant it.  And she'd had so much fun shopping with the two of them last month that she wanted to hang out with them again.  Especially since she'd been so bored this week.

Once their toes were done, they moved on to manicures, chatting with each other over their shoulders.  Rey had mentioned how bored she'd been all week, unaccustomed to having so much free time.  And that since Finn hadn't been feeling well earlier in the week, he wasn't really up to doing anything outdoors.

"Our office is practically empty, but I've had to work all week."  Rose lamented.  "I can't take any vacation until my 3 month probationary period is up.  They only let me take today off because it'll be a half day and I've worked a ton of OT since I started."

"That sucks Rose.  Before you know it your 3 months will be up and you'll be able to take some time off."  Rey said.

Rose nodded.  "I haven't been on a real vacation in ages.  I miss palm trees."  She pouted.

Rey smiled at her.  "I hear you.  I'll send you some pictures of palm trees.  Finn and I are going to the Bahamas for a short getaway in February."

A pained look flitted across Rose's face, but it was gone in an instant.  Suddenly, Rey realized how insensitive that had sounded.  "Oh my God, Rose, I'm so sorry.  I sounded like a snobby, insensitive bitch there!  I didn't mean to rub it in your face!"

"No, no.... that's okay – I know you were actually trying to cheer me up!"  She sighed.  "But the thought of tropical warmth, sand and sun does sound divine!"

Trying to change the subject, Rey continued.  "It really does suck that you've been stuck in the office almost alone all week."

"That's okay.  At least I had Finn to keep me company the last few days."  She shrugged.

Rey frowned.  "Oh.  I didn't realize he went into the office yesterday....he went for a little while on Wednesday..."

Rose's eyes widened and she quickly replied.  "Oh, I texted him because I was having a problem with something and it was easier for him to just come in and show me what to do rather than try to explain it..."

Rey's eyes narrowed.  She was sure Finn hadn't mentioned anything about going into the office yesterday.  She'd been reading a book – the one he'd gotten her for Christmas, when he told her that he was going to pick up his dry cleaning and run a few errands.  When he got home much later, he'd told her that he met one of his colleagues for coffee.  It wasn't really a big deal, but why wouldn't he mention going into the office?  She'd have to figure out how to broach it with him without starting a monumental fight for no reason.  But that was something that could wait until tomorrow....

Wanting to change the subject, she turned to Kay.  "How was your week?  Did you have to work too?"

"Um, no.  I had the week off.  I spent most of it with my parents, and saw a few friends."  She smiled shyly.  "Rose and I had dinner on Tuesday night, and I stayed over."

Rey realized that there was no mention of Ben in her description of events.  An inner demon prompted her to mention the Boxing Day dinner.  "We missed you at the Solo's on Sunday.  Leia was a bit disappointed."

"Oh."  Kay frowned, her cheeks pinkening.  "I...um.... I couldn't make it."  Was all she said in reply.

Rey tamped down the feeling of annoyance and anger at Kay, her eyes flicking to Rose, who was watching her intently.  "That's too bad Kay – it really was a lovely evening."  She gave them both a placating smile before focusing her attention on her now pretty fingernails.  She almost never wore nail polish, finding that she simply used her hands too much, and it always chipped and looked like shit after one day.  She'd opted for a shellac French manicure after the technician told her that although it was more expensive it would likely last for two to three weeks.  Rey was willing to spend the extra money if it meant she'd get even a few more days out of it.

Since it was New Year's Eve, the salon was packed, and they had to wait for a few minutes before it was time for their hair appointments.  "I'm positively starving!"  Rey announced.  "I'd just about kill for a club sandwich right now!"

"Oh!"  Rose exclaimed.  "I had the best corned beef on rye earlier this week!  It simply melted in your mouth.  And the pickles.... They were to die for!"

"That's nothing."  Rey told her.  "If you like corned beef, the deli around the corner from my place has the absolute best corned beef in the entire city.... They make their own bread, and use a secret home-made mustard.  You have to try it."

Another weird look flashed across Rose's face before she replied.  "Um... wow.  I'll definitely have to remember to try it if I'm ever in the neighborhood."

Rey felt a sense of momentary awkwardness, but didn't think too much about it.  Am I trying too hard?  Suddenly she felt like a teenager in high school again – wanting the cool kids to like her.  Shaking off the feeling, she smiled.  "You definitely should.  Its worth it.  Your taste buds will thank you, I promise."

It wasn't long before one by one their stylists called their names and the rest of their beauty transformations began.

****

A nervous breath shuddered out of her as she gazed at herself in the mirror, still in a bit of dazed shock at how she looked.  The dress really was stunning, and with her hair done in an artfully careless looking up-do, with heavy make up on her eyes, lips and cheeks, she had to admit that she actually felt beautiful.  Like pictures and videos of famous people she'd seen on the red carpet of big fancy events.  However, she was uncertain and self-conscious, feeling like someone other than herself.  It almost seemed like a stranger – not Rey - was looking back at her.

Steeling her courage, she crept out of the bathroom and into the living room where Finn sat waiting for her.  When he noticed her standing there silently, he stood quickly from the sofa, his face frozen in open-mouthed shock.  "Wow.  Just wow.  Literally wow Rey!  You look....stunning."  Rey blushed at his frank appreciation.  "I don't think I've ever seen you look like that."

Smirking, she shook her head, scoffing.  "Finn – its not like I've never gotten dressed up before!  We've gone to a few nice parties, and I have worn a dress and make-up you know."

"Yes, but not like that."  Coming closer, he gave her a soft kiss on the cheek.  "You kind of look like a movie star."  He smiled.

"Thank you Finn."  She said bashfully, the blush still staining her cheeks.  "That's very sweet."

Holding out his arm, he asked.  "Shall we?"  She nodded back, slipping her hand into the crook of his elbow and heading out the door.

****

Ben was fidgety, feeling nervous for some reason.  He wasn't sure why – couldn't put his finger on it, but he felt jumpy as he stood with Kay, making small talk with one of the donor's to his Mother's foundation.  Kay stood silently listening while the elderly man and his wife droned on about the foundation, but they couldn't seem to get their facts straight, and kept confusing it with another charity that they obviously also supported.  Ben had politely tried to correct them twice, but eventually gave up. Kay giggled quietly beside him.

Leia must have noticed his agitation, because she suddenly swept in to rescue them, saying that she needed Ben for a small task before more of the guests arrived.  They'd come to the venue earlier, and after their initial greetings, Leia had introduced her son to one of her more influential, but elderly donors whom she'd been speaking with at the time.  She'd been unexpectedly pulled away by a last-minute crisis, which left Ben and Kay alone with the older couple.

"You looked like you needed saving."  She whispered to him conspiratorially, leading them to their table.  "Sorry to have abandoned you with them."

"Thanks Mom."  He sighed, looking around the room absentmindedly.  "The Millars are a bit senile I think."

"I think they're sweet."  Kay said quietly, with a kind smile.  "Batty, but sweet."

"They are.  But they're also rich – and they like supporting good causes.  That makes for a great combination – for the foundation anyway."  She laughed softly.  Watching her son carefully, Leia noticed his distraction, and bit her lip in suppressed amusement.  "I don't think she's here yet."  Leia whispered into his ear.

Ben finally turned his attention to his mother, a confused look marking his gaze.  "What?  Who?"

"Nevermind."  She said, shaking her head with a smirk.  "Here's your table.  You don't need to sit yet.  Grab a drink and mingle.  But you might want to stay away from the Millars."  She chuckled.

Kay decided that she'd prefer to sit, mentioning that her feet were already a bit sore.  Ben nodded and went to get them both a drink.  On his way to the bar, he felt a prickle at the back of his neck.  Turning to glance at the entrance doors, it was as if the world suddenly stood still and the floor dropped out beneath his feet.  Rey and Finn were standing with his parents, smiling happily, while Rey clearly introduced Finn to them.

His breath froze in his chest, and his feet refused to move.  She was simply beautiful.  Stunning.  A goddess.

Swallowing thickly, he took in a shuddering breath, trying to calm his suddenly racing heart and to will his limbs to move.  Get a grip Solo – that's Finn's girl – your best friend.  Your girl is waiting for you back at the table.  He took yet another shaky breath before her eyes suddenly found his across the room, and he once again felt the world tilt on its axis.  From where he was standing, he could only see her.  Everyone and everything else fell away, their surroundings muted and blurred until it was just the two of them.  It was as if he was in a vacuum of silence with only him and her, and nothing else existed.

He could see her eyes soften and she gave him a small smile in greeting, before turning her attention back to his Mother, finally breaking the spell he was under.  He tried clearing his throat and swallowing the lump that was stuck there.  Glancing at his dad, he noticed that Han was staring at him with a knowing smirk, before turning back to the young couple in front of him.

What the fuck had just happened?  He thought to himself.  It was as if lightning had unexpectedly struck and he suddenly couldn't breathe for a minute.  Giving himself a mental shake, he continued moving towards the bar to grab those drinks.  All of a sudden he felt like he needed one – very badly.

After the brief greetings and introductions to Han and Leia, Rey and Finn made their way over to the table, waving at Kay.  She leaned over with a big smile and gave Kay a kiss on the cheek.  "Hi Kay, you look beautiful!"  She told her, admiring the simple, black sheath and long silver necklace she was wearing.

"Hi Rey – um, thanks."  Kay stood and gave both Rey and Finn each a quick hug.  "You look amazing – like some sort of celebrity.  I almost didn't recognize you."

Rey blushed for what she thought was the 20th time already tonight.  "Thank you Kay, that's very sweet."  Upon noticing that she was sitting there alone, Rey looked around before remarking.  "But why are you sitting here all alone?  Did Ben abandon you?"

"No, my feet are already sore, so he went to grab us some drinks.  Here he comes."  She nodded behind Finn.

Ben had walked up behind them with two drinks in his hands.  He'd initially ordered two whiskeys for himself, downing the first one in a single gulp to try to settle his rioting senses, and a vodka and cranberry juice for Kay.  He gave them all a nod and placed the drinks on the table, before turning back to Rey and Finn.  "Good evening, guys."  He said, extending his hand to Finn to shake before giving him a slap on the shoulder with the other.  "Nice suit."

Finn nodded.  "You too.  Wow, Solo.  A tux.  You went all out."

Ben shrugged.  "It's my Mom's foundation.  Son of the Chair.  Gotta look the part."  He smirked.  Shifting his attention to Rey, he gave her an appreciative smile.  "Wow, Rey.  You are gorgeous."  He said, leaning down to give her a quick kiss on the cheek.  "Like a movie star."  He smiled, before turning to Finn.  "You'd better not let go of her arm tonight, because all of the men here will be trying to steal her away – even the ones that came with a date!"  They all laughed, but Finn just rolled his eyes.

Suddenly they could hear a squeal from behind them and Rose literally ran up to the table.  "Guys!  This is amazing!  Did you see that flower display out front?!  And these centerpieces!  And everyone is dressed so fancy and looks so amazing!"  Her rapid fire commentary caused them all to laugh.  She literally threw herself at Finn and gave him a huge hug, followed by hugs for Ben, then Rey and finally Kay.  "Look at us!"  She bragged.  Turning back to the men, she posed for effect.  "Aren't we gorgeous?"  Not waiting for their reply, she looked at Rey.  "And wow, Rey!  That dress is amazing!  I told you it was perfect as soon as you tried it on!"

Rey couldn't help laughing at Rose's exuberant enthusiasm.  "Yes, you definitely did.  Thank you Rose."

She grinned hugely.  "Now, I need a drink!"  She declared.  Hooking her arm through Finn's, she took charge.  "Finn, come with me – I think Rey needs one too!"  With that, she marched off, dragging Finn with her, while Ben, Rey and Kay looked on helplessly with amused expressions.

Rey looked up at Ben, her lips still curved in an appreciative smile.  "Look at you Stupidhead.  All dressed up.  So handsome and dapper in a tux!"  Glancing over at Kay, she asked.  "Doesn't he look handsome?"  Kay smiled softly and nodded, while Ben's face and ears turned red.  Rey sighed.  "My, it looks like I'll probably be busy tonight Kay."  She said with mock resignation, shifting her gaze to the diminutive young woman once again.  "We might have to beat the women off of him with a stick!"

Kay giggled.  "Probably.  I'll give you the signal when its time Rey."

"Deal."  She replied, and Ben rolled his eyes.

"I am right here you know?  Contrary to what you two think, I can handle myself."  He said in exasperation.

Rey laughed.  "We never said that you couldn't handle yourself, Ben.  It's just that you don't often realize what's happening until its too late, and the women are literally hanging off of you!"  She admonished with a smirk.  "We just like to take care of it before it gets to that."

Shortly afterward, Rose and Finn returned with the drinks, both talking animatedly.  Rey watched them and grinned.  Rose's enthusiasm really was contagious.  Observing them closely, she realized that she hadn't seen Finn smile like that in awhile.  Again, she hoped that he and Rose would become close just like her and Ben were – and it looked like that might be happening.

Finn really did need a close friend.  He had work friends that he sometimes went out with for drinks at the end of the day, but no others really beyond that.  He didn't keep in touch with any of his old friends from MIT, and definitely didn't have any that he mentioned from when he was growing up in the foster system.  Because of that, she hoped the friendship she was seeing between him and Rose would continue to grow into something similar.

Ben had stood silently watching Rey, while trying not to be obvious about it.  He felt strangely tongue tied and off balance around her tonight.  She literally sparkled with beauty and life, and he was....dazzled. Fuck.  He had to stop this somehow.  If she ever found out..... Looking away, he swallowed to try to open the sudden tightness in his throat, realizing with even more certainty than before that he wasn't being fair to Kay.  He was a complete shit.

Taking a deep breath to try to clear his dangerous thoughts, he took another swig of his whiskey.  Glancing down at the drink, he decided he'd better go easy on the alcohol tonight, lest he make a fool of himself and say something he shouldn't.  Suddenly, Leia's voice gently floated over the PA system, asking everyone to take their seats, as dinner would be served shortly.  Glancing back over at Rey, he pasted a smile onto his face.  The food at this event really was always outstanding, and he'd enjoy watching her enjoy it.  Leaning over to her, he whispered.  "You're going to love this."

His voice was quiet and deeply mesmerizing, and she could feel his breath at her ear, causing her to shiver involuntarily.  Glancing up at him, she had to remember to breathe with him so close.  He really was so amazingly handsome in that tux.  The picture he cut was completely masculine and sexy, exuding raw sex appeal.  She wasn't kidding when she noted that they'd probably have to beat the women off with a stick.  Best friend Kenobi.  Remember that.

"Good.  I'm starving!"  She replied enthusiastically.  "I'm looking forward to an excellent meal!"  Looking around the table, she added with a smile.  "And great company!"

During dinner, Rey couldn't help feeling like she was in heaven.  It was a full 6 course meal, and she didn't think she'd ever had as much really good food at once in her entire life.  She could see Ben smirking at her across the table with an 'I told you so' look on his face.

He was carefully watching her reactions to each new dish, his eyes lighting up in amusement every time she expressed her delight.  At one point, she literally moaned in culinary ecstasy, and he literally felt the sound vibrate through his entire being.  He clenched his fists under the table and let out a slow breath.  Clear your mind, Solo.

Rey periodically glanced over at him, letting him know when she was particularly enjoying one of the foods.  At one point, she noticed a strangely pained expression flit across his face.  After that, he didn't quite meet her eyes for awhile.  She wasn't sure why, but figured that maybe he just didn't particularly like something he'd eaten.  She didn't know what it could be though since every dish was simply excellent.

To Rey, dessert was an affair all on its own, with a selection of small delicacies that included every single favourite sweet thing that Rey could ever recall eating, from crème brule, to cheesecake, to a decadent brownie, and of course tiramisu.  When she was finally done eating, she sat back and patted her belly with a contented sigh.  "That was awesome!  You were right Ben – that was the best meal I've ever had.  I literally stuffed myself.  Lucky for me my dress is loose and flowy."  She said with a grin.

Finn rolled his eyes.  "She says that now, but she can eat like a pig and never gain an ounce.  Mark my words, she'll be looking for a snack when we get home."  Everybody laughed, but Rey just playfully stuck out her tongue at him and shrugged.

Not long afterward, the lights were dimmed slightly and the volume of the music was turned up, signaling that the dancing was about to begin.  Couples began flooding the dance floor as the songs shifted between up tempo fun dancing tunes, to softer, slower melodies meant for slow dancing.  All of them got up to dance – even Ben and Kay – enjoying the fun and carefree atmosphere of the evening.  After a few songs however, Rey began to feel a bit flushed.  Fanning her face, she leaned over to Finn, yelling over the music.  "I'm a bit hot – I'm going to grab a drink!"  He looked like he was having a good time, so she added.  "You can keep dancing if you want – I'll be right back."  He nodded and gave her a 'thumbs up', turning to continue dancing with Rose and Kay who were beside him.

As she made her way through the crowd, she could feel a hand softly grasp her arm.  "Going to sit for a bit?"

Glancing up, she realized that it was Ben, who'd followed her off the floor.  "No, just grabbing a drink.  I'm hot and thirsty."

"I'll come along.  I could use a drink too."

"Okay.  Thanks. I'd like the company."  She smiled, nudging him with her shoulder before leading the way to bar.  After they'd both ordered their drinks, they leaned against the bar to chat.

The music was loud, even away from the dance floor, so Ben shifted closer and spoke into her ear.  "Are you enjoying yourself?"

Smiling broadly, she replied.  "Totally!  Thanks for inviting us Ben!  Dinner was awesome!  And the dessert – oh so good!"  Her eyes narrowed though.  "But I'd better not find out that you spent a ton of money on the tickets!  We have a whole table!"

Ben just grinned at her innocently.  "Nothing you need to worry about."

"Ben."  She warned.

Suddenly from behind her she heard a familiar, teasing voice.  "Holy shit!  She really is a woman!"

Turning around, she spied Poe Dameron standing nearby, grinning like a fool, with a beautiful redheaded woman beside him.  He whistled appreciatively when he took in her appearance.  "Damn Rey, I don't think I've ever seen you so fancied up.  You really do clean up good!"

The redhead beside him frowned and smacked him in the back of the head.  "That is not how you compliment a woman you ass!"  She scolded.

Rey just laughed, watching Poe squirm in embarrassment, liking the redhead immediately.  "The fuck Poe?!  What are you doing here?!"  She exclaimed, launching herself at him for a hug.

He shrugged.  "I'm supporting a good cause and treating my girl Zorii here to a fantastic New Year's Eve."  He smiled, looking between Rey and Zorii.  "Zorii, this is my friend Rey.  Rey, meet Zorii."

"Hi!  Nice to meet you Zorii!"  Rey smiled brightly.  Motioning to Ben beside her, she introduced him.  "This is Ben."

Zorri's gaze shifted over Ben with a slight nod, an appreciative gleam appearing momentarily before she turned and gazed back at Rey speculatively.  "So you're Rey."

Rey's eyes flicked to Poe's, her brows raised.  "What did you tell her?"

"Nothing!"  He shot back defensively.  "I've just mentioned you a few times, that's all."

"Umm....you told me that you used to live with her."  Zorii countered in a patronizing voice.

Poe looked over to Ben who stood next to Rey, observing silently.  "Ben – how ya doin'?"  He said, holding out his hand.

"Good."  Ben replied politely, shaking it.  "Nice to see you."

"Don't try to change the subject, you ass."  Rey interjected.  Glancing back at Zorii, she explained.  "I was his college roommate for a couple of years, along with another one of our guy friends, Snap.  It was totally innocent.  There was no 'friends with benefits' shit or anything like that."  She glared at Poe.  "In fact, most times they tend to see and treat me like one of the guys.  So much so, they sometimes forget that I don't have a dick!"  She glared at him, a look of smug annoyance still on her face.

Zorii's mouth fell open and she stared at Rey in amused shock for a second before bursting out laughing.  "Oh, I like her!"  She chuckled.

Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Ben's eyes widen as he covered his laugh with a cough.

Meanwhile, Poe's face reddened in embarrassment.  "We only got a little carried away with the locker room talk a couple of times."  He mumbled.

"The fuck you did!"  Rey exclaimed.  "I know -!"  Rey stopped and bit her lip, looking down at the floor, her cheeks reddening.  "Too much about your shit."  Looking back up at him, she giggled.

Zorii's face turned speculative once again.  "Hmmm.  I'll bet you have more shit on him than any of his Ex's."  She mused.

"Oh, most definitely!"  Rey laughed.  "I know lots of things that Poe probably doesn't want you to know."

"This could be fun!"  Zorii intoned, looping her arm through Rey's.  "Why don't you boys get us some drinks and we'll go powder our noses."  She said dragging a laughing Rey towards the ladies' room while Poe looked on uncomfortably.

Looking up at Ben, Poe rubbed the back of his neck.  "Shit.  Well this is probably going to end badly."

Ben chuckled.  "It certainly doesn't bode well.  For you, at least."  He laughed.

"Fuck.  I'm never going to hear the end of it."  He muttered under his breath

****

Zorii laughed into Rey's ear as she dragged her away.  "Don't worry, I'm not going to ask you to spill all sorts of secret shit on Poe.  I just wanted to scare him a little."  She grinned.  "Gotta keep him on his toes!"

Rey smirked.  "Okay, thanks."  Glancing at Zorii, she confided.  "One thing I can tell you for sure is that he gets bored easily."

"Oh, I already know that."  Zorii replied with a nonchalant wave of her hand.  "He's just that type.  Attractive.  Confident.  Cocky.  Women usually fawn all over men like him – and hop into bed at the crook of their little finger."  She laughed merrily.  "I can tell you that it took him a lot more than that to get me there – even though I was dying to do it!"  She confided, then shrugged.  "I'm just keeping him on his toes – not letting him know what I'm thinking all the time.  It'll keep him from getting complacent."  She smiled knowingly.

Rey burst out laughing.  "This will definitely be fun to watch!  You're absolutely right!  The women I've seen him with.....they practically cling to him.  And look at him like a kitten that's just found a bowl of cream."

Zorii laughed.  "That's probably a pretty apt description.  But what about you?  Don't get me wrong here – I'm not interested... but Ben is.... one prime male specimen.  Soooo....masculine.  And hot.  Women must literally follow him around wherever you go."

Rey nodded.  "Pretty close.  I often have to chase them away or tell them to fuck off."

"I don't think I could handle that all the time.  How do you do it?"  She asked, wrinkling her nose.

Cocking her head at Zorii, she smirked.  "It helps that he's not my boyfriend."

Zorii's mouth fell open.  "He's not?!  You just looked....like you were together."

"Nope.  My best friend.  Next to Poe.  He actually displaced Poe."  She grinned.  "Sorry."

"Don't apologize to me."  Zorii smirked.

Rey shrugged.  "Ever since Poe moved to Springfield, we haven't been able to see each other as much.  Mostly we just keep in touch though texts now."

Zorii smirked.  "Well, he's in Boston a lot more now."  She wiggled her brows meaningfully.

"Oh!  You live here in Boston...."  She said in wonder.   "I just thought he was visiting to come to the gala."

"Nope."

Rey's face lit up.  "That's great!"  Her eyes were softly reflective.  "I hope you can tame him Zorii.  I like you."

An odd look flashed across her face before she glanced away briefly.  Looking back at up at Rey, she gave her a soft look.  "Thanks Rey.  I hope so too.  I really like him."  She said quietly.

The pair were still chatting happily when they returned to Ben and Poe a few minutes later, who stood waiting at the bar with their drinks.  Ben just raised a brow at her in question as he handed her the drink.  "Thanks."  She smiled secretively, leaning closer.  "I really like her.  Poe's going to have his hands full."

The four of them wandered back to their table, bringing a couple of extra chairs over for Zorii and Poe.  Soon, Rey dragged them all onto the dance floor once again, making some quick introductions to Rose, Finn and Kay.  They continued dancing for several songs, just enjoying themselves and letting loose.  After awhile, the music turned softer, and the couples moved closer to each other to enjoy the dance.  Rey noticed that even Ben and Kay stayed on to dance, although their posture seemed a bit stiff and they kept a lot of distance between each other.

Rose had gone back to the table to wait for the song to end.  Part way through the song, Finn whispered to Rey.  "Are you okay if I dance with Rose during the next slow song?  She looks kind of sad sitting there all by herself."

Rey glanced over at Rose, who was sitting at the table alone, checking her phone.  "Of course Finn!  You're right – she does look a bit sad."

The very next song was another slow dance, so Rey and Finn headed back to the table.  Rose's face lit up when Finn asked her to dance.  She immediately looked over to Rey, who smiled and nodded encouragingly.

Ben and Kay had returned to the table too, with Kay complaining that her feet hurt.  "I should've brought comfy shoes as well as the pretty ones."  She said to Rey with a regretful smile.

Rey looked out at the dance floor, watching Finn dance with Rose and smiled.  That was such a nice thing of him to do.  Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a deep voice in her ear.  "Since both of our partner's are indisposed, would you like to dance?"  She looked up at him, noticing that he was holding out his hand.  "Please..."  Something stirred in her chest.  She glanced over at Kay who gave her a soft smile and a nod, then took his hand, letting him guide her onto the dance floor.

They were silent for a minute, both feeling a bit tongue tied for some reason.  Maybe it was the prolonged proximity, close enough to sense the barest hint of his breath at her temple; or maybe the feeling of his warm hand on her bare back.  Whatever it was, she needed to break the spell that she felt herself suddenly falling under, causing her breathing to become unsteady.

"Rose is nice.  I really like her."  She blurted out.

"She is.  I'm glad Kay has her.  She needed a friend."  He sighed.  "She doesn't make friends easily – but she does have a few."

"Neither do you."  She said, her voice quiet, soft.

"I know."  He swallowed nervously.  "I've never been able to."  Looking into her eyes, he continued.  "I will be eternally grateful that we met you and Finn that day in Mexico.  It felt almost like fate – because neither Kay nor I ever really do that - talk to people we don't know.  I...can't imagine if we hadn't."  He took a deep breath.  "I kind of feel like it changed my life."

"Me too, Ben."  She replied softly, before grinning playfully, trying to lighten the heavy mood.  "Could've been all the booze we'd been drinking that loosened you up too."  Her tone became serious again.  "I don't have a lot of friends either, you know.  My school chums like Poe have all scattered far and wide, and I only get to see them a few times a year now.  But Zorii lives in Boston, so that may change."  She smiled knowingly before continuing.  "Since graduation its mostly always been just Finn and I, and well....you know how that's been lately."  She sighed.  "Your friendship means the world to me, Ben.  I couldn't imagine my life without you either."  She could feel his hand tighten ever so slightly on her waist, and he nodded back at her solemnly.

"So, how are things with Finn?"  He asked quietly.

A small lump formed in her throat at his seemingly innocent, concerned question.  "I'm not quite sure.  Maybe a little better?  Maybe the same?"  She gave him a tight smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.  "And with Kay?"

"Same."  He inhaled deeply.  "I think its kind of....done."

Her expression became sympathetic, and she quietly replied.  "I'm sorry Ben."

He nodded back, staring into her eyes, noticing how brightly the green flecks were shining back at him.  Suddenly captivated by them, he shook his head to clear it.  "I wasn't joking earlier you know.  You do look stunning tonight."  He moved closer to whisper in her ear, his voice deep.  "You're the most beautiful woman here."  He told her quietly, before trying to lighten the suddenly heavy mood.  "Which is a total surprise – to me at least - considering you usually live in chinos."

The look on her face was decidedly unfriendly as her eyes narrowed.  She smacked him on the arm with a frown. "Hey!"

Laughing, he squeezed her hand and pulled her a little closer, dropping his head to whisper into her ear.  "You'll certainly be the object of more than one man's fantasies tonight."  He chuckled at her, his eyes twinkling at an attempt at levity.

Thinking that two could play that game, she shot back playfully, arching a graceful brow and giving him a pointed look.  "Hmm....I wonder which ones?"

His eyes locked onto hers, and suddenly there was a shift in the air.  Something inexplicable changed and became heavy between them, as the heat of his gaze flowed through her and her heart started to pound.  Ben shivered out a soft 'huff' as his arms tightened around her, making Rey's breath catch momentarily before she swiftly looked away to break the sudden tension.  Holy fuck.  She thought, feeling overly warm, curbing the urge to suddenly fan herself.  Get a hold of yourself Kenobi!

She swallowed nervously, keeping her gaze averted.  Ben's warm breath fanned over her ear, causing heat to flow through her and her eyes to drift closed.  Her knees began to feel weak, and she wanted nothing more than to pull herself closer and cling to him.  Attempting to find some semblance of control, she took a deep breath and tried to clear her head, shifting her focus to those around her.

Over her shoulder, she noticed a strikingly tall and statuesque woman with short, white blonde hair, wearing a form fitting silvery blue dress.  Rey smiled smugly and flicked her eyes back to him, giving a quick tilt of her head in the woman's direction.  "I think its more likely that she's the one that all the men will be preoccupied with tonight, rather than me."

Ben was still staring at Rey, similarly caught in the sudden jolt of heat between them.  He'd been innocently teasing her, when things seemed to have turned sultry without warning.  All he'd known was that he wanted nothing more than to bury his face into her neck.  He'd unconsciously leaned closer, feeling her shiver as his nose almost brushed the shell of her ear.  His heart was pounding as tendrils of desire began snaking through him.  Holy shit – what was he doing?

He'd heard her whisper about someone else being the focus of men's fantasies, and turned his head to see whom she was referring to.  Glad for the distraction, he glanced back into her eyes, giving her a knowing smirk.  "Do you mean, Phasma?"  Laughing, he leaned closer once again to whisper.  "Maybe, for those men that like having a woman larger than them in bed."

"She's more your size than Kay is!"  Rey shot back, her voice filled with an unnecessary amount of irritation.  She knew it was directed at herself though, angry at what she'd allowed herself to feel.  She was supposed to have buried this!

"And also unquestionably gay."  He quipped.

Her eyes widened as she looked up at him.  "Seriously?  Are you sure?"

"Positive."  He smirked.  "She's my mother's personal assistant.  Its common knowledge Rey – that's her girlfriend over there."

Rey looked over her shoulder at the woman he nodded to, the mood shifting back to easy camaraderie once again.  "Oh!  She's very pretty too."

Looking back down into her eyes, the corner of his mouth quirked up slightly.  "So, I guess it'll be you'll they'll be thinking lewd thoughts about tonight after all."  What the fuck was he doing?  Was he insane?  Why did he bring that up again?  Did he want to torture himself?

"Ewww.  That's gross Ben."

"Just saying."  He told her, still chuckling.

The music slowly faded out, signaling the end of their dance.  He gave her a soft kiss on the cheek, whispering in her ear.  "Thanks for the dance, my Lady."

Rey's heart rate sped up once again at his unexpected kiss.  As they walked back to their table, Ben placed his hand on her lower back.  At the touch, she once again felt the searing heat of his hand, and another prickle of desire slithered through her.  Suddenly her breath hitched and her knees felt inexplicably weak as that feeling trickled downward, centering itself into a throb in her core.

Angry at herself once again, she swatted his hand away and frowned at him, trying to keep a playful tone in her voice, but failing miserably.  "Hands off big guy!  Go grope your girlfriend!"

Something in the way she'd said it caused him to come to a complete stop.  Taken aback, he narrowed his eyes at her.  What the fuck?  They were always a bit touchy, so why was she reacting like this?  "Don't be like that – I was just trying to be a Gentleman.  Jesus Rey."  He gave her one last frustrated look, hesitating as if he was going to say something else – before shaking his head and turning to stalk away in the opposite direction.

It was completely unnecessary, as well as inappropriate for her to have said that, considering his circumstances with Kay, and she knew it.  She was left standing there, watching his retreating form, immediately contrite.  She knew that she'd overreacted – likely because she was feeling things for him that she shouldn't - again.  Because of that she'd behaved poorly and inadvertently hurt his feelings.  She was going to have to try harder to bury these feelings, or get better at dealing with them when they crept out.  If he ever suspected.....

Walking back over to their table she smiled at Finn and gave him a quick kiss.  "Did you enjoy your dance with Rose?"

"I did.  She's sweet.  How about you?"  He asked.

Shrugging, she replied.  "It was Ben.  He teased me the entire time."  As she said it though, she couldn't help remembering that moment when something had changed between them, how his hand had felt on the small of her back, his breath in her ear.  She pushed the thought away once more.  Leaning over she whispered in his ear.  "I would've preferred that it was you.  But it was a very nice thing you did so that Rose could have a dance."

Something inside of her felt utterly deceitful when she whispered those words to Finn, and she'd suddenly tasted acid in her mouth.  The word Liar had whispered through her head as she'd said it.  Still confused and angry at herself, she took a deep breath and once again pushed the feelings away.

Sitting down beside Kay, she gave her a bright smile.  Searching across the room, she spied Ben leaning on the bar.  A woman was standing beside him – a little close - who suddenly leaned in even closer to say something.  Rey rolled her eyes.  Here we go again.  It never took long when he was alone.

She motioned to Kay.  "You should go dance with your boyfriend before the single women here really start to harass him."

Kay gave her a slight shrug with her shoulder.  "My feet hurt.  And you know me – I don't really like to dance all that much.  Besides, those women take one look at little me and dismiss me like a fly to swat away."

"That's not true Kay.  Just go over there and wrap yourself around him – and give that woman a Fuck Off smile.  She'll get the idea."  Rey continued to watch Ben try to shift away from the woman unsuccessfully, as she refused to take the hint and shifted closer once again.

"Can you maybe go rescue him?  I can see that he's uncomfortable – but even when he does figure out what's going on he never likes to hurt their feelings."  Kay murmured quietly.

Rey glanced at Kay before looking back to Ben.  There were several people waiting at the bar, and the bartenders were moving around briskly behind the counter.  He must be waiting for his drink, and can't escape.  She sighed.  "Okay.  Back in a minute."

She'd lost track of the number of times she'd had to do this when they were out somewhere and Kay wasn't at his side.  For whatever reason, Kay had never had the nerve to stake her claim when women got too bold.  And they almost always did, so it usually left Rey to come to the rescue.  At this point however, Rey wasn't even sure that Kay saw Ben as hers to claim anymore.  She really didn't act like he was.....

Rey came up on the other side of Ben and wrapped her arm around him.  She could feel him jump at her touch, but his eyes showed relief when his head snapped around to see her.  She gave him a teasing smile, greeting him loudly in a mocking tone.  "Hi Honey.  Whatcha doin' over here?"  Glancing around him, she gave the woman the noted Fuck Off smile.  She was well practiced, having given it to many women who'd tried to pick him up before.

"I was just getting a drink, dear."  He said with emphasis, a playful smirk on his face.  The woman looked between the two of them for a moment before sauntering away with an exaggerated sway of her hips.

The smirk was still on his face when he let out a quiet, but long and drawn out sigh.  "Thanks.  Drink?"

"You're welcome.  Again.  And, yes please.  Gin and tonic."  He gave the bartender her order as he placed Ben's drink in front of him.  Sighing ruefully, she looked up at him.  "I don't know why Kay doesn't feel like she can do that."

"She hates confrontation – you know that.  So she just avoids it.  And sometimes, it feels like....."  He shook his head.  "Never mind.  There's really no harm done anyway.  I could just as easily tell them to fuck off too."

"But you won't, because you're too polite."  She said quietly.  "So you tell them no thank you instead and they don't listen.  Trust me, fuck off works much better."  She grinned.  "And you know that I usually don't actually have to tell them that.  My eyes speak volumes to them.  Only a few have ever been persistent enough that I've actually had to say it!"  She laughed.

When he remained silent, gazing down at his glass, she decided that she should be the one to go first.  "I'm sorry Ben.  I shouldn't have said that to you after our dance."

He scoffed lightly.  "Yeah, I'm sorry too.  I shouldn't have reacted like that – I was a bit of an ass."

"Its okay.  We both were.  It all just felt a little....weird.....all of a sudden, and...."

A regretful frown teased his lips.  "Yeah, you're right, it did.  And sometimes I say stupid shit when things aren't normal.  I'm really not a great conversationalist."

"You?  Never!"  She said in mock horror.  Her eyes softened a bit.  "Sometimes I say stupid shit too.  And I guess this just goes to show you that I can put on a fancy dress but that doesn't make me a girl."  She laughed playfully.  He scoffed and rolled his eyes.  "Friends again?"

Smiling back at her, he replied.  "Always."

The bartender placed her drink in front of her, and grabbing it, she raised her glass to clink with his in a toast.  "Happy New Year, Ben."

"Happy New Year Rey."

Much later in the evening, they were all together on the dance floor, glasses of champagne in hand as the clock struck midnight to herald in the New Year.  Everyone toasted and the couples all shared celebratory kisses as Auld Lang Syne began to play.  After a minute or so, each of them turned to their other friends to give brief kisses and wish them a Happy New Year too.  Ben and Rey each gave each other big grins and clinked their glasses in a happy toast.

"Happy New Year, Ben."

"Happy New Year, Rey."

After drinking to their toasts, Ben leaned over and gave Rey a hug followed by a quick kiss.  It was just a little peck – but this time, it was on the lips.  Rey was initially startled when he'd leaned in, but the jolt of electricity that she'd felt upon that brief touch of their lips was enough to shake her to her core.  Both of them were wide eyed as they pulled away, their shocked expressions locked on each other's for several heartbeats before nervously turning away, hoping that no one else noticed that kiss and their reaction to it.  When Rey looked up, she could see Poe looking at her with a thoughtful expression, as one brow cocked up at her in challenge.  She glanced away, feeling a nervous quiver in her stomach, swallowing the sudden lump in her throat at the thought that they'd been 'caught' at something.

Looking over at Poe, she could see that he was still watching her.  Stepping closer, she put on a mischievous grin and gave him a quick buss on the lips too.  "Happy New Year Poe."

Poe grinned back at her.  "Nice move.  Smooth.  Happy New Year Rey."

The party began to break up at around 1 AM, as people began leaving en masse.  Rey however, was still full of energy after her relatively boring week, and didn't want the night to end so early.  Wanting to continue the festivities, she suggested that they all go back to her and Finn's place for a few more drinks and a casual after party; everyone in their little group agreed, except Zorii and Poe.  Poe leaned over and whispered in her ear.  "We're going to have our own after party."  He told her suggestively.

Rey laughed and gave him a quick hug.  "Oh!  Well, enjoy yourselves then."  She gave Zorii a knowing wink, who smirked back, before they turned to leave.  Rey watched them go, shaking her head.  "Have fun kids!  Don't do anything that I wouldn't."  She added on a laugh.

"Oh, I fully intend to.  See ya, Halfsie."  He said, walking away with his arm around Zorii.

Rey rolled her eyes and ordered an Uber for the rest of the group.

Once they got back to the apartment, Rey immediately changed out of her dress, telling everyone on a sigh as she emerged from the bedroom.  "Although I liked my dress, this feels so much better."  Glancing at the other two women, she exclaimed.  "Kay, Rose – I left some cozy clothes on the bed if you guys want to get comfy too."  The two of them gladly jumped up and went to change as well.

Rey went into the kitchen and started setting out all of the alcohol they had in the apartment, as well as anything that resembled a mixer, so people could just help themselves.  Ben came up to her and gave her shoulder a nudge with his.  "While you definitely looked remarkable in that dress tonight, your schleppy-chic look isn't half bad either."

"Ha ha."  She told him, looking down at her yoga pants and natty T-shirt.  "Here – you should make yourself comfortable too."  She said, tugging at the jacket of his tux.

Frowning, he shucked it off and tossed it on one of the chairs.  "Happy now?"  He asked with a smirk.

"Nope.  The tie should go too.  And loosen a few of those buttons."

"Nag, nag, nag."  He joked, his voice taunting and deep, while removing his bow tie and opening the buttons at his throat.

"Better."  She smiled.  "Drink?"

He scanned the selections on her counter.  "I don't suppose you have any whiskey?"

"Nope, sorry.  Never touch the stuff."  She grinned up at him unrepentantly.

"Vodka tonic then."

She quickly made two of them, and handed one to him, clinking her glass with his before taking a sip.  Kay came out of the bedroom looking much more comfortable, hopping up onto one of the raised stools at the counter.  "Thanks Rey.  That feels so much better."  She smiled.

Suddenly, a loud shriek echoed from the bedroom.

"What the fuck was that?"  Rey asked.

Kay glanced toward the bedroom, a look of concern briefly crossing her face.  "Um.  Maybe Finn walked in on her when she was changing?"

Rey just looked at Kay, then Ben, before she started laughing her head off.  Once she got herself under control, she yelled.  "Finn?  Honey?  Did you forget to knock before walking into the bedroom where Rose was changing?"

He came into the room, his tie gone and his shirt open to his navel, looking chagrined and embarrassed.  "Uh.  Yeah.  I'm an idiot."

Walking up to him, Rey patted his cheek and shook her head.  "Nice job."  She giggled.

Ben was watching the scene in amusement, when he noticed Kay looking away, clearly uncomfortable with something.  He narrowed his gaze, looking back at Finn, and then at Kay once again, who was suddenly preoccupied with the countertop.  What the fuck was going on?

Just then, Rose walked out of the bedroom with an annoyed look on her face.  Placing her hands on her hips, she glared at Finn.  "Did you enjoy the accidental show Finn?"  Even though her voice was stern, her eyes danced with mirth.

As he watched the scene in front of him, Ben couldn't help but think that Rose seemed to be enjoying this.  Her face was flushed and her eyes were sparkling.  He glanced back at Kay, and then at Finn once more.  Shaking his head, he laughed under his breath and scrubbed a hand over his face.  Something seemed weird, but.....Fuck it.  He'd had a lot to drink....and his brain clearly wasn't working right.

Finn shuffled closer to Rose and placed his hand on her shoulder.  Everyone in the room observed silently, waiting to see what would happen.  "Um.  Sorry Rose."  Finn muttered apologetically.  "I should've knocked first."  Looking up at her, he saw the expression on her face, and began laughing.

"It's okay Finn, I forgive you."  She smirked mischievously, saying the words in a patronizing tone.  "You dumbass."

Everyone in the room laughed at her playful response.  Smiling back, Finn simply nodded, then clapped his hands together, trying to divert everyone's attention.  "Okay everybody, now that's over with, who needs a drink?"
