7 session two
After breakfast, me and Louis head to our first session of the day. On our way, I saw Amy locking her room and dragging her body towards the auditorium like room. As we reached the door, Louis being the gentleman he is held out the door for me and Amy. I look at him in admiration and he raised an eyebrow at me, "what?" I shake my head, "nothing.," and drag out the g in nothing. Louis shrugs and leads us inside, his pinky touching mine. I pretend to ignore the small gesture and hold in a gasp as his pinky grasps mine.
Louis looks at me as if trying to decipher the meaning of my facial expression. I don't exactly know how to react to what Louis is doing to me. We met a day ago and this casual yet highly meaningful pinky holding, shoulder nudging, and the poking are freaking me out!
It is so compelling to just pull him aside and ask him that 'hey Louis, what the hell are you doing?' I can't say that I do not feel butterflies in me because I do. But I contain my urge and try to remain calm. We walk and stand in the now formed circle. No one is bothering to talk so Louis and I stay silent. Not like I was in the mood to talk anyway.
After about a minute or two, I see Sherry jogging towards us, "sorry I got late guys!" Everyone simply nodded and I sent a small smile towards her which she gladly returned.
"Today we will do community circle and then head out into our beautiful government provided yard. There we will do an activity called the human knot. I will discuss the objective of the game later but for now..., let us discuss our prom experiences. You are all eighteen and above so surely prom or any type of dance did happen to be a part of your life," Sherry says and I think about Prom. Prom. The one day that every hormonal teenager fantasizes about. People may not admit it but secretly, all of us love the idea of slow dancing in a dark room and just having the time of our lives. It is no shock that I liked that too and I wanted this stereotypical ideology to come true. But not everything always goes how you plan. This is life. It is inconstant. It was inconstant. And it will be inconstant.
"I will go first. Oh, sit down guys!" Sherry interrupts herself sits on the smooth floor in Indian style. We all follow her and sit. I cross my legs over each other and lean back on my arms.
"I went to prom in the class of 1985 with my high school sweetheart, Gail. She asked me out in the most simple manner and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. We had to be careful because the LGBT community wasn't the most popular thing back then. So anytime someone questioned us, we were just two best friends who held hands," Sherry said. I could see that her heart was aching for her wife. However, putting a brave face on, she passes the squeaky stuffed animal-like toy to Amy.
"My dances consisted of clubs and disco's with my daddy," she speaks in a monotone voice and throws the toy to Daniel. Daniel barely manages to catch the toy and scolds Amy silently. Amy smirks cheekily and holds up a middle finger to him. Lucky for her, Daniel does not make a scene and Sherry does not notice Amy's highly obvious and provocative way of getting attention.
"I was a photographer at my school's prom. It was funny because the fire alarm went off and everyone had to step out of the building," Daniel laughed. "It was great seeing people I hate standing outside shivering in the windy weather," he tosses the toy to Michael. Michael's eyes are fixated on me, making me a bit uncomfortable, "Proms are useless and just a waste of time. I skipped."
Niko grabbed the toy and cleared her throat so that Michael would stop creeping me out. I mouth her a thank you and she smiled at me, "I was never asked out to the prom so I decided to stay home and prep for finals." She handed Mikayla the toy, "Pass."
"We will come back to Mikayla later. Ishita," Sherry gestured me to speak and I stared at the red toy in my tiny hands. Pressing my lips together, I glanced at Sherry. "I did not go to the prom because I was raped a week earlier." Without any emotion, I gave the toy to Louis and stared at my hands. All I could now think about was how I was forced into something completely against my will. Is this how society is supposed to liberate a woman? Because it is a very crappy way.
"Um, okay. I was the one who spiked the punch at my prom!" Louis proudly states and I laugh. No one else laughs, only me. Only me and Louis burst into a contagious fit of laughter which soon pulled everyone else in.
