-5: Recommendation; Logan
It had been a few months since Logan had met the baby raptors. So far, it seemed the highest-ranking raptor was Echo. She was a proud creature with beautiful, soft brown plumage. She enjoyed keeping the others in check; making sure Charlie wasn't faffing around during training and such. Logan found himself loving them all; he couldn't pick a favourite! Echo was a very efficient (albeit slightly reclusive) beta, but right behind her was Blue, who was more outgoing than Echo and was incredibly loyal towards Logan, who had established himself as the alpha. Delta was probably the most mischievous of the bunch- while she was the most affectionate towards her sisters, she would sometimes resist Logan's training, and even nip him occasionally- a behaviour which Logan knew would be better to get rid of before adulthood. Finally, Charlie was the lowest-ranked and the most light-hearted, a bit clumsy and not the brightest, but still an absolute cinnamon roll. She was cheeky, and there was genuine humour in her actions.
''C'mere,'' Logan said with a smile as Delta nipped at his bag, grabbing at the metal zippers and pulling at them (sometimes more vigorously than he would've preferred). He knelt down and reached a hand to her- Delta, despite her slightly rocky personality, was actually the fluffiest of the raptors. His supervisor, Hoskins, had told him that Delta was modelled closest to what real-life velociraptors looked that- which ended up in her being the smallest of her siblings (considering that velociraptor's were only as big as turkey's, but hopefully Delta would grow a bit bigger than that despite her genetics), as well as the fluffiest, covered head to toe in feathers.
Logan had never really appreciated the intentional inaccuracies that Jurassic World always put on the 'dinosaurs'. They were animals, not monsters- yet, ingen (the company that created the dinosaurs) constantly felt compelled to go against what was known within the palaeontological field. Granted, they were beginning to try to be more accurate- as seen with adding feathers to some of the velociraptors, and making the head-shape of newer tyrannosaur's closer to the real creature, complete with some proto-feathers along the back. But the velociraptors were still far too big (Charlie was not accurate at all, being completely based off the original Jurassic Park raptors), and the rexes could still roar- when the real creatures probably were unable to do so. And whenever Logan brought this up to employees, they would always say something like 'Eh, everyone knows that the dinosaurs aren't actually dinosaurs, the genetic code is different, so they look different- like Wu said!', or 'Just enjoy the animals!'
But Jurassic World had a huge impact on the world's view on dinosaurs. So many people had no idea that velociraptors were feathered, or that male edmontosaur's had a fleshy comb on their heads, because the park didn't care for accuracy or science. It was all about money.
This place needs more workers who actually care about science and the welfare of animals, Logan thought to himself grimly, though felt a sudden touch of happiness as a familiar face appeared in his mind; someone he knew would be perfect for the job.
Delta sneezed, and quickly sprinted off towards Charlie, pouncing on her and initiating a gentle play-fight between the two. Even though Charlie was bigger, Delta always won.
Confidently, Echo strode up to Logan, and offered her head to him.
''Hey buddy,'' he grinned and petted her. He got along with Echo best, they were like partners in crime- she was very good at rounding the others up and getting them to listen to him. Echo purred contently, her tan throat vibrating as she did so.
Blue approached and sniffed Logan's shoe. Echo eyed her, though not in a hostile way. She always watched over her sisters. It was her duty as beta.
A door creaked open.
''Looks like this is going well!''
Logan recognised Hoskin's voice, and turned to see the rotund man watching him and the raptors, smiling. Logan smiled back with a nod, then turned back to pet both Blue and Echo (delighting them both; the two chirped with glee).
''Yeah, there's been some progress! Echo scores highest in the cognitive puzzles, Blue is passing her empathy tests with slightly higher scores than her peers, and-''
''What about obedience?'' Hoskins asked.
''Well, that needs a little bit of working on,'' Logan shrugged. ''They're still a bit too young to really excel at those. But I do have a recommendation for someone you could potentially hire to help me with that!''
Hoskins pursed his lips for a moment. Logan liked the man- he was friendly and talkative, if a little naive (and occasionally a bit too loud), so he knew that he would at least consider his request. Hoskins seemed to enjoy having new faces around.
''Who did you have in mind? I mean, I don't know if the higher-ups will allow it, considering they're pretty satisfied with your work so far, but if it helps you out, I can't see why they would say no.''
''His name's Barry. I worked alongside him in a couple of observational studies we did on the cognitive capabilities of crows.''
''Barry, huh? Got any more info on him, maybe pitch him to me?''
''He is one of the best in his field; did his PhD dissertation on the complexities of social groups found in different corvid species. He's great with animals, professional, and, well... you two will certainly be getting along, considering how social he is,'' Logan chuckled.
''Hmm...'' Hoskins thought for a moment. ''I definitely feel tempted. Tell you what, how about you contact him and tell him of this opportunity, and I'll convince the higher-ups to hire him after the interviews and what-not. That sound okay?''
''Yes,'' Logan smiled. ''Sounds perfect!''
Note: I decided to make Hoskins more likeable and less villainous, since I never liked the villains in the JP series. They're always very flat and uninteresting, so Hoskins will be more misguided than malicious in this story.
Anyway, I hope the story is going all right so far.
