Max had a pretty normal life, ignoring the fact that he's a witch. It was from his mother's side and witch genes are always more dominant than regular human genes. In private, his mother taught him potion and spells. That also peaked his interest in chemistry. He grew to hate the stereotypical portrayal of a witch, as it is far from the truth.
