A four year old from Michigan had her leg broken more than 300 times to save it from being amputated. She was born with a rare disability called proximal femoral focal deficiency, which caused her leg to be deformed and much shorter than her right leg. Her parents were left with two treatment choices- amputation and prosthesis- before deciding that the better option was to have the girl's leg lengthened, a complex procedure that required her mother to break her daughter's leg three times a day for four months. By the end of the treatment, the girl's leg had grown by over four inches, enabling her to have a normal life.
