How to Reboot a Show (aka: a long rant about Ducktales)
First off, here's the theme song so you can join the ranks of those poor souls who have this song stuck in their heads for eternity. Yes, I'm one of them. I have no regrets.

Where do I start? I'm actually one of the nostalgic fans, believe it or not. I discovered the original show years ago, and absolutely loved it. Scrooge McDuck has and will always be my favorite Disney character, so to see an entire show centered around him and the Duck nephews blew my ten-year-old mind.
It was certainly better than some of the other stuff I watched at the time. *shudders*
Anyway, when Disney announced that a reboot was coming, I was (obviously) scared. Disney, the company known for ruining everything they remake, was going to reboot Ducktales? My childhood? Nooooooooo
Then I found out David Tennant was voicing Scrooge McDuck. And being the die-hard Tennant fan I am, I knew I had to check it out.
So, with Disney's new marketing strategy being "release the first episode online so people can see how they like it," I watched the first episode, loved it...
...and didn't try to watch the rest of the show because we don't have cable and Disney was pretty good about copyright claiming every episode that was on Youtube at the time.
Fast-forward to today. I just finished both seasons, thanks to Disney+. I'm now a die-hard fan and believe it is better than the original. I don't know how that's possible, seeing as it's Disney, but they did it. They really did it. There's hope for future television reboots, everyone.
But why? Why is it better than the original?
First of all, the characters. I'm more forgiving of plots in television shows, if they nail the characterization.
My word, they do. They gave the nephews, if you can believe this, INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITIES. *screams*
In the original show, you could never tell them apart. Not even joking, they basically were one character and it was kinda annoying. In the reboot, each one is UNIQUE! THAT'S CRAZY. IMPOSSIBLE.
WOO-OO
David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck is everything I dreamed it would be and so much more. He's perfect for the role as the eccentric uncle who knows about strange and weird things and has quite a few secrets. This isn't sounding familiar at all. Noooo.
Alan Young will always be Scrooge McDuck, but Tennant is a worthy replacement.
*twenty-three days later*
It's time to finish this review, courtesy of the three weeks I've had to reflect on this show.
The side characters are memorable and have unique personalities. There's a new villain, Mark Beaks, who's basically embodies every millennial stereotype. He's hysterical, but also a pretty good villain.
But can we talk about the STORY
The only television shows I've been able to stick with are those with an linear story arc. Ducktales kinda does that, with a lot of filler episodes in between. There's plenty of mysteries that are eventually solved (hey, the theme song promised them, so the writers delivered), and adventures with the characters that help us get to know them better.
And, wonder of wonders, the characters actually change. I can't say how, because of spoilers, but they do. And it's great.
There's still some ongoing mysteries (one of which is why does Scrooge hates Santa Claus) that will hopefully be solved in Season 3...if it ever comes. It was promised in 2019. It's 2020. I was very disappointed and wished I'd waited longer to watch it when I found out. 🤣
This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you reboot a series. You figure out what made it work, understand the flaws, and work to create something new, but understands where it's coming from. You couldn't have this reboot without the old show, but it's still a fantastic series on its own.
This is a show that's written by fans for fans. It's definitely not for everyone (I showed my sister the first episode and she hated it, as expected), but for those nostalgic fans of the '87 show and young kids who are accepting of animated shows (*cough* unlike SOME PEOPLE), it's fantastic. At least check out the first episode, if you're even slightly interested in the concept.
Coming this week...a comparison/review of Tangled and Frozen. Yes, I'm aware this has been done multiple times. No, that isn't stopping me. Mwahahahaha.
And if I have motivation to type stuff up, a new book chapter. Never thought that was coming, did you? 😂
