Chapter 33

Check out the lovely fan made trailer by @MapleLeafx at the side :)

"I honestly can't remember the last time I was at the beach," Harry said as he dropped his bag into the boot of Zayn's car. Harry could drive, but he didn't have his own car, so Zayn was driving Harry, Marielle and I to the beach. Kate had talked us all into leaving on the Saturday morning to lengthen out the stay. We'd be returning on the Monday afternoon. "It's been years."

"Really?" Marielle asked Harry as she dumped her bag on top of his, "That long?"

Harry smiled at her warmly, "You'd be surprised just how long."

Zayn locked the door to his home - a first - and made his way down towards the car, carrying a small back-pack in one hand and the car keys in the other. He looked good. A tight white T-shirt clung to his top half and khaki shorts hung low on his hips, his swimming trunks just visible above the waistband. "Ready everyone?" he asked.

We all piled into the car, Zayn and I in the front and Marielle and Harry in the back. I looked in the driver mirror and noticed that the pair of them were sitting right next to each other. I smiled as I watched them. Zayn had once told me that Harry fell in love easily, and it was quite possible that Marielle was the next interest. The way he looked at her reminded me of the way my dad looked at my mum; full of love and adoration. I wondered if Zayn looked at me in the same way?

We had all packed some clothes, toiletries, food and extra bits and bobs for the trip. Kate had managed to get her hands on a jumbo pack of marshmallows while I had held up my end of the bargain and remembered to bring the crisps. All eight of us had agreed to share out the job of buying a different type of edible item. Sophie had argued constantly until we all agreed to let her be in charge of the Oreos.

"Is everyone ready?" Zayn asked as he started the car. Soon, we were pulling out of the street and I watched as Zayn and I's homes shrunk in the distance until they were nothing but dots. At Kate's home, her mother had agreed to drive Niall, Sophie and Liam and her to the destination. Kate's mum was all for us taking a break from school and having a 'well-earned' weekend trip. She had said it would 'brighten our young, tired souls'.

"I'm sure Kate said something about her mum booking us two caravans?" Marielle said from the backseat. I turned to look at her with a confused expression.

"Really?" I questioned.

"No she didn't," Zayn said all of a sudden, capturing both Marielle's and I's attention. "I booked us a beach house."

"You did not?!" gasped Marielle, her eyes wide. Harry watched her quietly, his green eyes on her lips. "Those things cost a fortune to rent out, Zayn!"

"Hey, it was a treat, May!" Zayn laughed, his eyes on the road. "I thought it would be nicer than staying in one of those dodgy caravans."

"Thank you," Marielle said, "I can't believe you did that."

"My pleasure," Zayn said, grinning side-ways at me. I returned the smile and looked ahead. We were lucky to have nice weather, as it was still Spring, and the rain was a bugger for arriving at random times of the day. Maybe that was why Kate had wanted to lengthen the trip? The forecast was to be great until the Monday, when we'd be leaving.

"I Spy, anyone?" I asked.

"Me first!" Harry called, sitting up straight, "I Spy, with my little, something beginning with ... B."

"Birds?" I questioned as some crows flew over head. I noticed a pigeon flying just beside the car, it's beady eyes seeming to glare at us. I looked away, shaking my head.

"Nope," Harry said.

"Buildings?" Marielle guessed.

"Yep," Harry said, beaming at her. "You're turn, May."

Marielle's cheeks turned the faintest pink as she began, "I Spy, with my little eye, something beginning with..."

We played for about half an hour until all of us began to get bored. We'd run out of things to choose anyway - the landscape around us was pretty empty. A car horn tooted behind us and I turned to looked through the back window. Kate's mum was driving just behind us, and my friends' faces were beaming at us through the glass. We waved back as Zayn continued to drive.

"Zayn, mate, how do you know where we're going?" Harry asked all of a sudden and I nodded in agreement. How did he know he was going in the right direction?

"Kate told me of course," Zayn said, "It's not like I had much of a choice but to listen to her instructions in case we left before everyone else - which we did."

"I see," Harry said, stretching his long legs out between Zayn's  seat and mine. "How long until we're there?"

"I think about an hour still?" Marielle said, her brow furrowed. I could tell she was trying to think back to the last time we had been to the beach. We all cherished the memory dearly.

"Alrighty," Harry said, as he shuffled around in his seat, laying down to rest his head in Marielle's lap. Since Christmas, the two had gotten so much closer, and it was almost sickening to watch them together. It was like watching a cliché love story right before you, puppy eyes and all. But it was adorable, seeing two of my friends who clearly liked each other as more than just friends.

"Just a double check," I said, "Has everyone got their swimming wear?"

"Yep."

"Uh-huh."

"Yeah."

"Good. Everyone got their appointed food?"

"Haribos," Marielle said.

"Sandwiches," Zayn announced after her.

Harry spoke last, "The microwavable burgers."

"Great," I said, smiling at everyone.

As we drove further away from Bradford and towards the coast, the sky seemed to become bluer, and the sun brighter. Time seemed to have passed by in no time at all. I rolled down my window and stuck my head out the window, inhaling the salty air. The gravel path soon started to mix with the sand, and we had arrived. The sea was as blue as ever, the lapping of the waves making butterflies swarm in my stomach. I was excited - it was just like it had been before.

Zayn parked the car just beside a little reception hut beside the coast amusements; restaurants, arcades and countless little gift shops.

"I'll be right back," Zayn said before he left the car and jogged over to the lady standing in the hut. I watched as Zayn pulled some papers from his pocket and handed them to the woman. She scanned them and then passed something to Zayn who nodded before turning to meet us again. "Got the key to the beach house."

Kate's mum pulled up beside us only minutes later and everyone piled out of the car.

"Thank you for the ride!" I heard Niall say to Kate's mum who grinned at him from her seat. Kate ran up to Niall and kissed him softy before waving to her mum.

"No problem, Niall. Use protection!" Kate's mum yelled to them and they both paled. For a second, Kate's mum watched them seriously before bursting out with laughter. "You know? Sun cream! So you don't burn your skin? Use the protection!"

Kate and Niall exhaled audibly as we watched Kate's mum drive off. We all laughed at the blank expressions on Kate's and Niall's faces before we grabbed our bags and headed towards our beach house, number ten. I watched the numerous families and partners down on the sandy shores, playing with beach balls or building sand castles and I smiled.

"Memories, huh?" I heard Liam say in my ear and I jumped. He laughed at me before slinging an arm around my shoulders. I saw Zayn tense in front of us and I rolled my eyes at him when he looked back at us.

"Yeah, seems like a life time ago, huh?" I replied.

"Sure does. I always remember that time we accidentally set the blanket on fire instead of the marshmallows," Liam said, "Good times."

"Well, let's make sure to keep Sophie away from the fire next time," Niall laughed beside us, making Sophie scowl at him

"It was an accident, Horan," she huffed.

"That's what they always say," he whispered to Liam and I. We chuckled as we trudged our way through the sand.

"So after we dump our stuff, what do you fancy doing?" Harry asked us and we all looked at one another as if silently sending a message.

"Ice-cream," Niall said automatically.

"I think swimming would be great," Marielle said, leaning into Harry's side. He nodded down to her, his fingers twirling her hair around.

"I think a rest would be well deserved - I hate long journeys," Kate moaned, stretching her arms towards the sky.

I rolled my eyes, "Kate, it was only an hour and a bit."

"Which is quite long to be sitting in a car," she retaliated.

The beach houses were like the size of any other house, painted blue with verandas around one side, overlooking the sea. They were beautiful, and spacious outside and in. Inside, were three bedrooms, one living area, a smaller kitchen and two bathrooms. The whole thing looked new, but I knew they weren't - they had been standing since we were children, and looked after very well when no one was inhabiting them.

"Jesus, this is pretty huge," I heard Niall say from the back of the line. We all bundled into the living area and plunked down onto the seats, dropping our bags to the ground as we did.

"I call a bedroom!" Kate yelled all of a sudden, dashing from the room with her bag in hand. Niall casually stood from his seat and followed her, cackling loudly to himself. I looked around at everyone to see if they were thinking along the same lines and preparing to run to get a room before anyone else had the chance.

"I'll take the couch," Liam said, kicking his legs up onto the seat. I frowned at him, about to disagree but he cut me off, "It's fine, Laura. It's pretty obvious that May and Harry will want a room, and so will you and Zayn. Sophie and I can sleep in here for the first night and then we can swap on the second night?"

"I want a bed, though," Sophie moaned, "My back hurts from sitting in that car for so long."

"I'll take the couch, and so will Zayn," I said sternly, glancing around at everyone.

Marielle shrugged, "I'm happy to take whatever." Harry let his head fall onto her shoulder.

"Yeah, Laura and I will be in here," Zayn said. I was a little shocked that he was agreeing with me, but I saw him smile over at me and my breath caught in my throat. "May, Harry you guys can share a room and Liam you and Sophie could share if that's OK?"

"Perfect!" Sophie said, practically dragging Liam from the room. Marielle looked over at me with wide eyes and a grin on her face.

"I'm getting the first shower though," I said to Marielle as I stood from my seat and unzipped my bag, pulling out the crisps and placing the packets into a cupboard in the kitchen area. I called through to everyone else to do the same, and soon the fridge, cupboards and drawers were filled with junk food.

"We should get some real food," Liam suggested and we all agreed. "There's some shops back where the car is. Some of us could go get some stuff?"

"Yeah," I said, heading towards the door, "Come on then!"

***

When Liam and I returned from the shops, our hands full of carrier bags, we barely had enough time to unpack them before we were dragged outside into the warmth. We headed down to the beach, the sun beating down on us.

"Did you remember protection?" I teased Kate and Niall as we made our way towards the sea. They rolled their eyes at me.

"We need to have a bonfire tomorrow night after everyone leaves," Sophie said, looking across the wide expanse of golden sand, "We need to find a place."

"We need wood too," Harry said, looking around, "There'll be some old drift wood and such around that we can light, surely?"

"Most likely," Zayn said, shielding his eyes from the sun. The sun made vampires weaker, so all his abilities wouldn't work as well as they usually did. I knew that meant his speed, strength and Persuasion would be at a lower charge. The thought made me giddy.

We walked together across the sand for five minutes and I smiled at some children who bumped into my side by mistake. Zayn wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close.

"I'll race you to the sea?" Sophie said to Kate who laughed.

"You know I don't run, Sophie," she answered.

"Really? That didn't stop you when we were trying to be first in line to see Harry Potter at the cinema a few years ago," Sophie retorted, rolling her eyes. The pair of them shared a look before they took off. I watched as the pair of them shoved at each other to get there first.

"I could beat them both," Harry said, grinning slyly.

"Prove it," teased Marielle and Harry shrugged before running off, tugging her along with him. Soon, we were all running, until Zayn decided to pick me up and swing me around onto his back. As we all neared the waves, Zayn and Harry had overtaken everyone else, and I looked back over my shoulder to see Sophie gaping at us. Kate looked shocked.

"You may be weakened, but running this fast isn't a great way to hide what you are," I said in Zayn's ear. I felt him shrug and before I knew it, we were standing in the sea, the water lapping around Zayn's waist, hitting the back of my thighs. I jumped off of his back and into the water, looking back over at my friends who were just about there.

"We win!" yelled Harry, spinning Marielle around, under his arm. "We win!"

"You're a child trapped in an adult's body aren't you?" laughed May as she wrapped her arms around his waist.

"Possibly," Harry  answered.

***

"So, the last time we were here," Liam started, "I remember there being a sandcastle competition."

All of us were lying on blankets under the sun, soaking up the good weather while it lasted.

"We were slightly younger then," Sophie reminded him.

"Not by much!" Liam protested. "You're just scared I'd win again."

I rolled onto my side until I was tucked up against Zayn's torso. He wrapped an arm around me and held me tight. "How are you enjoying the sun shine?" I asked him quietly.

He grunted, "It's bright."

"Are you feeling alright? You know, your abilities and such?" I asked. He looked down at me and grinned.

"I still have all, they're just weaker."

"Just admit it - the sun weakens you not just your abilities."

"You weaken me."

I slapped his chest gently and looked over at the beach houses. Ours was just visible behind number nine, and there were people on the verandas enjoying the shade. A flutter of movement caught my attention and I looked up at the roof of the house to see a pigeon sitting there. Sea gulls I would have expected pigeons?

"Where did Kate and Niall bugger off to?" Marielle asked before taking a sip of her drink. "They've been gone for about ten minutes."

"Probably screwing each other," Sophie said and Liam laughed out, "Just joking!"

"They went to get more ice-cream," I said, "There's probably a queue."

Zayn nudged me gently, "Want to go for a walk?" he asked and I agreed, letting him pull me to my feet. We carried our shoes and let our bare feet touch the warm sand beneath us, holding hands as we did. "I used to like coming to the beach."

"Did you?"

Zayn nodded, "I remember the first time I did - with my family. It was the only time we could afford to leave Bradford and travel a little."

"What was it like then?"

"The beach was beautiful. You know the first time you see something new, and you're so overwhelmed by its beauty?" He asked, looking down at me. I looked away and nodded. "Well, it was like that... All of us were speechless, and we ended up staying until the sun started to set."

"It sounds lovely," I said, smiling, "Is that the best memory you have of your family?"

Zayn's eyes lowered and he nodded slowly, "One of the best."

"How did they die?" I asked quietly. Zayn looked at me, his eyes narrowed. "I'm only curious - you don't have to answer."

"Then I'm not going to," he said through his teeth, storming ahead of me.

"Zayn, I'm sorry!" I gasped as he continued to walk. "I didn't mean any harm!"

"I know you didn't, Laura," he said, "I just don't like talking about it, like you already know."

I stopped where I was and my eyes widened. "Oh my God. You miss being human, don't you? You miss having a family and a normal life."

Zayn stopped and glanced over his shoulder at me. In three large strides, he was in front of me. "You don't know anything."

"You don't scare me anymore, Zayn," I said, my voice shaking a little, "So you can stop with the big-guy act."

"You may not be scared of me, Laura, but you forget ... I'm still a vampire. I still have dirty ways, horrible thoughts and much more. Never forget my true nature."

With those last words, he walked away.

***

"Where did The Bae disappear to?" Sophie asked as I made my way back to my friends. I shrugged and lay back down on the blanket, hoping to avoid talking about the moody creature. If he still wanted to act like that, then it was his choice, not mine.

"Did you two have a fight?" Liam asked, his voice a little too hopeful. I grinned over at him and shook my head.

"Not really - I just brought up a touchy subject and he got moody."

"Where is he now?" Marielle asked.

"Walking," I said, turning onto my side. Just then, Kate and Niall returned with ice lollies in their hands.

"They only had Magnums and Cornettos, so enjoy!" Niall said, letting us pick our treats. "Where's Zayn? His will melt if he isn't back soon."

"I don't think we'll see him for a little while," I said grumpily. Marielle explained to them what I had said and they nodded before sitting beside us all. I noticed that Harry was on his phone, texting furiously.

"What're you doing, Harry?" I asked.

"Messaging the bastard," he said as his fingers flew across the keypad. "He'll be back soon no doubt."

"I doubt it."

"I said no doubt!" Harry said, slapping my arm playfully.

***

By the time everyone else had left the beach and it was only us left, Zayn still hadn't returned. I'd texted and called him multiple times asking if he was OK, but he hadn't replied. I was becoming angry. I'd apologized more than once, and told him that he didn't have to tell me, and he was still avoiding me. He was acting like a child.

"Wait for it... Wait," I heard Marielle saying to Harry as we watched the sun setting. The sky was now a mixture of pinks, oranges and purples, and the best part still hadn't started. "Here it comes!"

"What?" Harry asked, confused. May hushed him as the sun sank lower in the sky and touched the horizon.

"There," said Marielle. "Beautiful, isn't it?" We all watched the sun set in silence, the only sound around us being the crashing waves and our content breathing. I looked over to see Liam reaching towards Sophie. She smiled up at him and rested her head against his shoulder.

I didn't think I'd ever be able to forget what Liam had said to me on the night of  the Christmas Dance. The way his sad face had met mine and told me how much he cared for me, loved me. Then he'd kissed me. It was something that would remain in my memory for a good while, and as Liam had been Persuaded to not remember what had happened between us that night, I knew his feelings were still there.

I pulled my phone from my pocket as I felt it buzz and I opened the message.

From: Zayn
I'm sorry, Laura. I just got upset, and I hope I can make it up to you somehow.
Zayn x

I smiled down at my phone and began to text back.

To: Zayn
If you get your arse back here, you can make it up by watching the beautiful sun set with us.
Laura x

He answered almost immediately.

From: Zayn
Is that the only thing that I could to to make it up to you? ;)
Zayn x

 I replied.

To: Zayn
For now. Get over here!

I looked over my shoulder, hoping to catch a glance of him running through the sand towards us, but I never did. I was beginning to think he wasn't coming until I felt arms wrap around my waist and pull me back against a hard chest.

"You're back," I whispered, leaning against him.

"I'm back. And I'm also sorry," he said, kissing my neck, "I was an idiot-"

"You still are," I retaliated and I heard him chuckle against my skin.

"Perhaps ... but I'm your idiot."

After the sun set, we shook the dust off of the blankets and rolled them up before making our way back to the beach house. The warm weather and running around had drained us all, making sleep seem like Heaven's gift. After we piled in through the door, muffled 'goodnights' were chorused before everyone made their way back to their rooms. Harry was carrying a sleeping Marielle in his arms.

"Night you two," he said before he left the room. I waved tiredly to him before I threw myself down on the couch, kicking my legs up over the back and letting my head hang off the side.

"I'm knackered," I said to Zayn who was undressing. I looked over at my bag which was still sitting next to the door. I stood and retrieved it before I began to slip my T-shirt over my head. I had my swim wear underneath my clothing, so I had no problem about changing in front of Zayn. I looked over to find him ogling me and I flushed.

"Why not sleep like that?" he asked, nodding towards my bikini top. I laughed at him and shook my head.

"I don't think so," I muttered as I folded my T-shirt and pulled out my pyjamas. I knew it would be chillier at night time, so I decided to bring the onesie my parents had bought me for Christmas. Just as I was about to start unbuttoning my shorts, I felt his hands on my bare skin. His fingers danced across my lower back and up to the back of my bikini. "I don't think I'd be very safe sleeping in nothing but a bikini."

"Hm, do tell?" Zayn murmured, leaning towards my neck, his lips skimming my skin.

"Well, there's this horny vampire that I'm sharing a room with, and he can't seem to keep his hands to himself," I said as he pulled on the string that was keeping my top half covered. I instantly raised my hands to cover myself as the scrap of material fell loosely around my neck.

"Mm, and why can't this horny vampire keep his hands to himself, Laura?"

"Because he just can't," I answered, "He likes to touch things."

"He does indeed," he whispered as he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me back against his chest. The feeling of his bare chest against my skin made me shudder but I soon fell into the trap and relaxed completely in his arms. "Especially when it's beautiful girls."

"Stop trying to flatter me," I huffed before I turned around and pulled him down so his mouth met mine. My arms wrapped around his neck and I refused to let him go as we kissed, the bikini long forgotten. His cold hands slid gently across my skin, up and down my back, over my breasts and to my face. I was surprised about the lack of embarrassment in me - I hardly felt it at all. All I knew was that Zayn and I were standing with each other.

"Does this horny vampire like being in control of situations?" Zayn asked me.

"Too much."

"Is he allowed to take control of this situation?" I looked into his eyes and shook my head. We were both exhausted from the journey and exercise of the day, and everyone was probably still awake. I didn't want someone to walk in to something unexpected.

"I'm tired," I said, taking his hands in mine and holding them in front of my chest. "I don't think it would be good to do things, Zayn. I don't think anyone will be asleep yet and Harry's probably listening right now. If you are, Harry, then get lost!" I said a little louder than before. Moments later I heard his loud laughter coming from his and Marielle's room. "See," I said to Zayn.

"Aw," he pouted, "Shame, because the horny vampire is getting hard." My eyes widened at his words, and true enough, I could feel his hard member pressed up against me. I cleared my throat awkwardly before I pulled away from him, holding the material across my chest.

"Well, tough luck," I said as I pulled my onesie open. "Turn around then!" Zayn laughed before doing as I said. I quickly pulled my clothing off before zipping up my pyjamas in place. I turned round to see Zayn looking at me and I glared at him.

"What? It's not as if I haven't' seen you naked before," he said. I shrugged and lay down on the couch, pulling a blanket over me. Zayn stood watching me the entire time in his shorts, his eyes flickering to the ground  every so often. He looked upset and I frowned.

"What is it?" I asked, sitting up. His face looked like it had when he had been telling me about his family - pained and reminiscent. It was clear he missed his family dearly, and talking about them wasn't something he was used to.

"I just ... I feel bad about what happened before," he said sheepishly, "I'm just not prepared to re-live the past and talk of my family. Not at the moment, anyway."

I nodded, "I understand, but I want you to know," I started, sitting up and looking up at him, "I'm always here if you need someone to listen to."

Zayn smiled. "Thank you."

"At least tell me this," I started, crossing my legs, "Why is it that you were able to tell me about Louis and how you became a vampire but not about your family? Surely talking about someone you love should be easier than about someone who tortured you?"

Zayn chuckled quietly, "It's not like that ... it's a lot more difficult than you can imagine."

Part of me was desperate to know what happened to his loved ones, but I knew not to push him again. At least not twice on the same day. I watched as he pulled his shorts down and lay in one of the armchairs in his swimming trunks. I let my eyes scan his tattoos, my eyes lingering on the one of the cartoon like woman and the memory of him telling me it was once someone he knew came to mind.

"Tell me one thing?" I asked, "Who's the girl on your arm?"

Zayn froze in his seat, his eyes lowering to his arm. He sighed, "Someone I once knew."

"You've said that, but who was she?"

Zayn looked up at me slowly before saying, "Laura, I want you to know that I don't like talking about this - any of this - so..."

"It's OK," I promised, "Just try your best."

"Her name was Perrie," he started, looking at his hands, "I knew her back in the 1920's, and she was my girlfriend for a while.

"After I was turned, Louis made Harry and I believe that killing humans was bad, that it drew attention to us, and we didn't want that kind of attention. I always knew I'd be a danger to her, that being with her would put not just her, but her entire family in danger, but we loved each other too much to do anything about it."

"I thought you said that falling for humans was disgusting? You made a fuss over Harry for doing it," I stated.

Zayn glared at me, "That's when I realised that falling for humans was a fatal mistake. One night, I hurt her really badly, and the guilt still follows me around like a lost puppy. That's when I knew that I wanted power. I wanted to be able to kill without feeling the guilt and shame that Louis had planted in our brains, all because it was bad to kill humans while feeding."

"You killed her?" I asked, shocked.

"I left her," he said flatly, "I Persuaded her, her friends and family to forget me. I couldn't handle the fact that I was a threat to them. It was too painful to continue like we were, so I done the right thing."

"Oh, Zayn I'm sorry," I said.

"It was in my nature to want to kill, and realising that's what made a vampire a predator was like a light bulb turning on in my head. I was going to leave Louis and his ways, and be who I really was," he continued, as if I hadn't spoken. "That's when I started hating humans - they were weaker than me, easily hurt both physically and emotionally..."

"Zayn, stop," I said, walking over to him, "You can stop."

Zayn nodded and let me sit in his lap. I wrapped my arms around him and let him rest his head against my shoulder. We remained silent for a few minutes, holding each others' hands. I regretted asking him, seeing him upset like that hurt me also.

"I'd never hurt you, Laura," Zayn said, suddenly, his voice hoarse, "Never."

"I believe you," I answered, stroking the back of his head comfortingly. I felt him shift beneath me, and the next thing I knew, I was pinned to the ground beneath him. "Zayn!"

"Shh," he said quietly, "It's alright." Then he kissed me deeply.

"We should probably get to sleep," I mumbled against his mouth but all he done was kiss me harder. My hands slid up his chest to his shoulders and I linked my ankles together around his waist.

"Or we could just stay awake?" Zayn suggested as he kissed my throat.

"Zayn-"

"Whoa! That was more than I needed to see!"

Zayn and I sprung apart as Sophie wandered into the room and to the kitchen. I quickly stood up and looked over at Zayn who was lying on the ground with his arms crossed behind his head, a wide grin on his face. I glared at him and gestured for him to stand up but he remained where he was.

"Sophie, we-"

"There's no need to explain," laughed Sophie as she filled a glass with water and took a sip, "If you want to have sex, then have sex. Who am I to stop you?"

I stared at her wide-eyed and shook my eyes, "No, Sophie, we were't-"

"Sure, Laura. Sure," Sophie said before she winked at me and made her way back towards her and Liam's room. I groaned and turned to face Zayn.

"You cheeky bastard," I said, "You knew she was coming, didn't you?"

"Maybe..."

I rolled my eyes at him before I pecked him on the lips gently and climbed back up onto the couch. "Good night Zayn," I said to him.

"Can I tell you one more thing about Perrie?" he asked me. I looked over at him curiously and nodded, "Do you remember that time when I freaked out after you touched my fangs?"

"You mean when you pushed me off of you and warned me to stay back?"

Zayn nodded, "Do you remember how I told you it was because I had a shock? That I was surprised to find you doing that?"

"Yeah..." I trailed off, not sure where he was going.

"Well, I lied. That's what Perrie done. That's why I hurt her, because she done the exact same thing you were doing, and I lost control and attacked her," Zayn said quietly, "It was my fault that she ... nearly died."

"It was an accident, Zayn," I said, "You didn't mean to hurt her."

"I know, but I still did. I can't take that back."

I nodded, not knowing what to say to help. Was there anything to say that would help? I rolled over and closed my eyes, thinking about what Zayn had told me about his past. He was a sensitive person deep down under his vampire shell, and I didn't know what would happen if that shell was broken. Would I end up like Perrie?

I fell asleep listening to Zayn's heavy breathing and the rolling waves down by the beach.
