Chapter Two
"YEEEEAAAHHHH!" Tanaka cheered, swinging his shirt around.
"Put your shirt back on," Dachi scolded him.
"Look, you called him Baldy, and now he's all worked up," I complained.
"You've been trash talking him since you entered the gym," Tsukishima argued.
"But I didn't call him Baldy," I snarled, looking back to Tanaka, who was still making a scene. "No one wants to see that, come on. Put your shirt back on."
The game continued on as the ball was sent over. Tanaka quickly received it, letting Kageyama take the second ball. This left the little one up to attack. I crept forward, expecting a tip or roll-shot from such a height until I saw the orange haired boy launch into the sky, easily clearing the net. Realizing I was too far forward, I tried to position myself back as quick as I could, but luckily, Tsukishima was able to block it.
Although, he seemed bummed about the clean block that Tsukishima was able to pull off, it was clear that even I had underestimated the small first year. If Tsukishima wouldn't have been there, it would have been a clean kill.
"You took me by surprise before. You have a really nice jump there," I overheard Tsukishima say to the small orange haired boy. "Now, if you were only about a foot taller, you'd be a real superstar."
To think, I almost thought he was going to be nice to him. I watched Tsukishima walk away from the net, obviously leaving the boy rattled, but still taunting him with his words.
The small boy didn't seem too discouraged by the sour blonde's words, and he continued to try with his quick attacks. However, Tsukishima's block seemed to be too large for the much smaller boy's skill set. Not only, was Tsukishima's block too big for the others to handle, but his ego seemed to be getting to the others as well.
"You better snap out of it buddy, or you're going to keep getting blocked. Why not give one of those royal sets? The kind that wipes out your opponents AND your teammates at the same time!" Tsukishima laughed at the dark-haired setter.
I had heard of Kageyama before. They referred to him as the 'King of the Court'. However, judging by Tsukishima's taunting, it wasn't a nickname that he was all too fond of.
"Shut your mouth," Kageyama snarled to Tsukishima.
"Your serve, Tadashi," Dachi said from the side, tossing the ball to him.
The nervous first year went behind the serving line and served the ball. It almost cleared the net but was caught the last second. The boy instantly apologized to the blond bully as I rolled the ball under the net to the other side.
"Shake it off, you're fine!" I cheerfully told him.
He looked shocked but bowed his head to me with a small smile.
Kageyama picked up the ball and went to the back line to serve as he mumbled something under his breath. Although I hadn't seen him play much, I had heard many great things about his abilities.
He threw the ball in the hair and approached to serve a top spin serve. It was a quick ball with enough spin that it was direct to hit the court with the amount of force as an attack, and it was about to land right in between Tadashi and me. I quickly took a step to the left, taking the ball on my platform, giving Tsukishima an almost perfect pass.
Tsukishima then set the ball up for Tadashi, who approached the net and attacked the ball. Hinata attempted to pass up Tadashi's attack but fumbled, shanking the ball.
However, that didn't seem to be any of the first years' main concern as Tadashi, Hinata, and Kageyama all stared at me surprised. Tsukishima didn't seem to care all that much, not that that was a shock.
Tanaka instantly yelled at Kageyama, "You practically served it right at her! You can't do that! She will pick up every one of those serves!"
I stood up straight shook my head. "Don't misjudge me because I am a girl. I have played and beaten much better."
"Your Grace, shouldn't you be taking this seriously?" Tsukishima snickered.
I could've sworn I saw him glance back at me before Hinata got involved, leaving the three of them to having their own conversation.
"You're doing great," I said to Tadashi.
He looked shocked to hear me talk to him and quietly replied, "Th-thank you."
"You know what, I've had enough of your smart ass—"
"Tanaka!" Dachi scolded.
The conversation a head of the two of us quickly drew us in, seeing that Tsukishima's comments were finally starting cause a reaction. I could tell that they were trying to have some sort of a moment, so I kept my comments to myself. However, despite everything, the smallest guy with the tangerine hair was set on the idea that he was going to spike down the quick set, and I couldn't help but respect him for it.
The tension continued in the gym as Tsukishima and Hinata went after it. Finally, after saying his final words, Tsukishima served the ball. Tanaka easily received the ball, and I was ready to align myself with Tanaka's angle until I saw that Kageyama decided to shoot the ball back to Hinata, who was already in the air to hit.
I reacted fast, but his timing was off slightly, letting the ball roll off his wrist at an awkward speed. I dove to the floor, seeing that the flute ball could very easily land in. However, as the ball reached the ground it landed outside the line, giving us the point.
That didn't seem to be the point though. The point was that the smallest of the first years could be the deadliest on the team, and he had just proved it. He had the speed, the hops, and the drive to become an ace hitter, and he was here to prove it.
However, despite how powerful and moving his words were, that didn't stop Tanaka from freaking out about the fact that he could've been doing quick attacks this whole time. I must admit at the end of the day their team had the better advantage. I had two middle hitters, and Tanaka got blessed with the setter.
Throughout the rest of the game you could tell that the sour setter and determinate tangerine were going to get the timing down for this quick attack. Despite the salty words from Tsukishima throughout the match, their confidence didn't waver. It was quite amusing to observe. There was a lot of trial and error. The two were like polar opposites and just watching them interact was entertaining enough but watching them try to pull off a quick attack, it was better than cable.
I went back to serve. I sent a pretty easy ball over, knowing that this game could easily be over soon. Both Tsukishima and Tadashi stood at the net, ready to block. Tanaka received the ball, and Kageyama set it to the outside where Hinata was already in the air. He swung at full force, hitting the ball straight to the ground. None of us had time to react. Although, Hinata seemed amazed, the others didn't seem too impressed until Dachi said something from the side.
"Guys...he just did that with his eyes closed," Dachi commented under his breath in amazement.
That changed everything. Hinata was able to hit that ball with such accuracy and timing, there was no way that he couldn't have been looking that entire time. He was relying purely on his instincts. Amazement struck all of us as we saw the abilities in the small boy.
They continued to work on their attack, and with more trial and error, my team was left with quite a lead. Tadashi served the ball and ran up to block the ball, leaving me back for defense. Hinata started his approach to hit another quick attack but changed his footing at the last second. He ran to the other side of the net, leaving the blockers behind him. Tsukishima ran after the same direction as him in an attempt to stop him, but he was far too late. Hinata swung down at the ball, hitting a line shot. I ran after it best I could, but I was also late. It was clear that the unlikely duo may have finally found their click.
They were able to hit this timing between the two of them multiple times, and we were now losing. They just needed one more point, and it was game.
"What did I say, (Y/N)? I told you I'd kick your ass in this," Tanaka boasted.
"To be fair, you haven't really done anything all too impressive. It's your freshman duo over there kicking my ass," I replied back, out of breath.
My comment surely rattled Tanaka as he started on one of his rants again. The ball was served again. I received it, and we were able to get it back over. Tanaka pick the ball up, though, and it was a perfect pass to Kageyama. Tsukishima was obviously annoyed and stuck his block to Hinata. Thus, Tanaka was wide open on the net, and Kageyama instantly set the ball to him. Tanaka attacked the ball and sent it straight down the line, winning them the game point.
"What about that one, (Y/N)? What do you have to say about that one?" Tanaka continued to taunt.
I couldn't help but giggle at him. "Okay, Tanaka, that one was a good hit...but I'd love to see you do it again with a blocker in front of you."
"HEY! What's that supposed to mean? I could do it with or without a block!" Tanaka yelled.
"Dammit," Tsukishima muttered under his breath.
Tanaka continued to talk his trash and Hinata joined in with him. I didn't mind much at all, but Tsukishima seemed annoyed. Once we had all the balls picked up, I went to my stuff and started taking my shoes off.
"How was that (Y/N)?" Suga asked, coming up to me.
"You know I always love to play, but that was rather difficult. I didn't have a lot of initiative to work with. I think you'll have your hands full with all of these first years," I told him.
He let out a chuckle, "You could say that again. It was good to have you here, though. Will you be back anytime soon?"
I gave him a genuine smile. "I'm going to try."
In return, he gave me a large grin. Once I had all my stuff together and changed my clothes, I said bye to the boys and started to walk home.
"Oh, are you going this way too?" I heard a voice ask behind me.
"Shut up, Yamaguchi," A second voice muttered.
I turned to see my two teammates from before. Tadashi seemed happy to see me after, but I couldn't say the same about Tskushima.
