Chapter Six
I looked at Tsukishima through the net. No, we weren't on the same side this time, and the smirk on his face told me that he was pretty pleased to be enemies over allies this time.
"Try to avoid hitting into the block, I'd hate to out show you," he mumbled to me.
I wiped the bottom of my shoe and mumbled under my breath, "Try to not let the little guy show you up..."
No one else seemed to notice our bickering, but I knew he had heard my comment. And apparently, he didn't have anything to say back. Not that it matters, the serve was about to go up anyways.
I looked to Suga, who was already looking my way.
"You ready?" he asked with a smile.
I nodded to him, smiling back.
Kageyama was the first to serve. Each of us were ready to receive. I was pulled back to the backrow to receive the serve, when I watched Kageyama gracefully toss the ball in the air before aggressively approaching and swinging. He had a tough top spin serve, but it was coming right at me. Instantly, I stuck my arms out, and the ball bounced all of its momentum from my platform to the setter's spot, where Sugawara was already standing.
"Good receive, (Y/N)," Suga cheered, moving himself under the ball. "Now, it's coming back to you.
I quickly moved up to the corner of the ten-foot line ready to attack the ball. Suga set a high ball along the net, and I approached at it, jumping after my last two steps, sorrowing in the air. I looked across the plain of the net for a split second, seeing that Tsukishima had already closed the block, taking away most of the space in front of me. Knowing what I had to do, I swung at the ball, turning my hand and sending a cut shot right past the block. The ball instantly went down, giving us the kill.
The freshmen all looked at me surprised, but none of them looked nearly as surprised as the tall blonde. I couldn't help but swallow a smirk, knowing that I had proven something to him...not that it mattered.
As the rotation went around, I ended up in the back row. Luckily, Asahi was one my side. The boys had filled me in that he didn't really want to be part of the volleyball club because of what happened last year at the spring tournament. However, they got him to agree to come to this. Slowly but surely, that confidence did begin to return as he started getting kills. You could see that 'ace' mindset building its way back up for him, and I was quite impressed with Noya, because it seemed that every time we did hit into the block, he was there.
No, we were all playing really well, considering how out of practice some of us were. However, we weren't the only ones playing well. It seemed that Hinata and Kageyama had formed this undeniable bond with their timing. Hinata was hitting those quick sets without even looking. It was almost annoying to see that raw talent between the two of them. For being first years, they were definitely dangerous. Luckily, though, we took the first set.
But the game didn't go without its own chaos from the boys. Kageyama belittling Hinata, which I have gathered was pretty usual, and Tsukishima was making his own comments like usual- but it was only to Tanaka, Hinata, Kageyama, and me. However, after taking the first set, he had stopped his rude comments at me. Actually, he stopped looking my direction all together.
During the second set, we were interrupted by the principal, telling us to close everything down. Truth was it was getting late, but it was clear that none of the guys were ready to leave. Tadashi was even having fun, even if he was just watching. Takeda was able to convince him to let us keep playing, and the game continued.
After getting four aces in a row, we rallied for the last point, but my side one the second set as well, ending the night. We all thanked the Neighborhood Association for coming before going to our bags to take our gear off. Just as I got done, I said my goodbyes to the boys.
"I'll see you guys later," I said to them as I waved off.
"Promise?" Noya excited called back to me.
I looked back at them, and Hinata, Tanaka, Noya, and Suga all held the same edger look. Dachi and Asahi also looked rather curios about my response as well. I couldn't help but giggle at them. It was true that these guys had become some of my best friends since I got here, and even the first years were starting to join them.
"Hopefully," I smiled back to them.
I sent them all a small wave before I existed the gym only to run into my almost neighbors.
Of course...
