12:38 PM. THE SOUTHERN AIR TEMPLE

"kyoshi island is only a few hours on here,"  aang says, showing the water tribe siblings the notebook that he and y/n stole from the fire nation ship.  "according to this, avatar kyoshi was the fiercest of warriors and a master of what they call the avatar state. maybe, something in her shrine will help me control my power before- "

"you kill someone?"

"sokka,"

"before it happens again," aang continues, looking at sokka wearily and walks off. sokka looks at his sisters before walking towards the two of them.

"it's time to go home," sokka says to his sisters.

"what/eh?" katara and y/n say at the same time.

"we did our part," sokka continues. "we saved him and you," he motions towards y/n who looks away. "from the firebenders. now it's time to go home. my duty..." katara tilts her head. "our duty is to protect the village, like dad told us too,"

"they can protect themselves," katara says.

"besides, baby bro," y/n starts. "what's the point if we don't save the world? wolf cove won't be safe,"

"can both of you hear what you're saying?" sokka scoffs. "save the world," he mocks. "us?"

"why not?" katara challenges. "if the world is going to have any chance, it's going to need aang. and you're right. we do have a duty," katara continues. "and it's to protect the avatar,"

"protect him? you want to protect him?" sokka chuckles, dryly. "the guy who nearly blew us off the top of this mountain,"

"it's about more than just helping aang," katara admits, which makes y/n look at her baby sister. "ever since he came into our lives, things have changed for me. before i met him, i couldn't bend enough water to fill a thimble. and now look what i can do! and that's after a single day! look around, look where we are now. i don't know about you, but i can't go back," katara looks at both of her siblings then walks off.

sokka sighs, looking into the sky.

"what do you think?" he asks y/n.

"oh, i didn't think you would ask," y/n teases. "thought you would just be the alpha male and say what we have to do," sokka looks at her, making the girl smile at him. "i love my home. and i will forever miss it. but...what if we were made for more? not just to protect our home but everyone else's too,"

sokka looks at his older sister, sighing.

"and if i don't come, you and katara will just go without me, right?"

"i would never leave you. or her, so i would just spilt myself in half and go with the both of you," sokka looks at his sister unimpressed.

"water fiend,"

"boomerang boy,"

💧

sokka and y/n walk towards the younger too, seeing that both of them are confused.

"what's going?" y/n mumbles, as aang is bent down, looking at katara's bag. the bag starts to scurry away, which makes y/n welp.

aang chases after it, katara going the other way and capturing the bag with ease. she tips out the contents, a small creature falling from it. the creature screeches, grabbing onto the bread that is there.

"hey, that's out food!" sokka shouts at the creature. the creature drops the bread, flying onto the branch of a peach tree.

"what is that?"

"a winged lemur!" aang exclaims, looking up at the lemur with a smile. "the sky used to be filled with them," aang uses his bending, flying up to play with the winged lemur. y/n watches with a small chuckle, before looking down at the empty bag.

"let's pick this up," she mumbles, seeing a scroll with a blue ribbion tied on it. "what's this?" katara looks over her sisters shoulder as sokka looks down.

y/n opens the scroll, seeing a note in her grandmother's writing. as she reads, she sees the waterbending movements which makes y/n look at it in awe.

my dear y/n and katara

this scroll has been passed down among waterbenders of our tribe for generations.

it contains everything you both need to know to begin your bending education.

you have no idea how hard it's been to keep this from the both of you.

but with the fire nation hunting for benders, it was just too dangerous for you to have.

but now, that you've both gone into the world, you should take what belongs to you. the both of you.

you are both waterbenders.

this is who you both are and that's who you'll both always be.

never forget that.

"see?" katara says, looking at sokka. "this would never have happened if we'd never left home,"

sokka looks at y/n who nods. he sighs with a small groan.

"fine," he mumbles. "we'll go to kyoshi isalnd and see how it goes,"

"look at you," y/n smiles, putting her arm around sokka and giving him a squeeze. he rolls his eyes, y/n letting go of him.

"aang," katara calls, looking up. "are you ready to leave?" the airbender is sitting on the branch of the peach tree, smiling at the winged lemur.

"there's something i have to do first," he says, looking at the temple which he almost destroyed when he was in his avatar state.

💧

aang places gyatso's necklace onto the rocks, softly.

he stands up, tears threatening to fall from his eyes.

"my whole life, you were there for me," he starts. "and i wasn't there for you. goodbye, gyatso. i'm sorry," aang turns around, sniffling and walking past the water tribe siblings. katara walks after him, then sokka. y/n looks at the stone grave, bowing at it.

"i have no idea who you were but thank you for being there for aang," y/n says, her head till bowed. "i don't know how air monks worked. but he misses you. i think you were a father figure to him," she looks up from the floor, turning around to follow her siblings.

and what she can't see is gyatso looking at her with a soft smile in the spirit realm.

💧

the gaang fly up on appa, y/n and sokka at the back and katara and aang at the front.

katara nudges aang who looks at her with a frown. she points at the opposite direction, aang's smile returning as the winged lemur is flying right beside him.

"you want to join us, momo?" aang asks, putting his arm out.

"momo?" sokka questions.

"yeah," aang smiles, looking back at the older siblings. "he looks like a momo, doesn't he? just like how you look like a sokka,"

"can't argue with that," katara adds on, which makes y/n laugh. momo chitters, playing around on aang's shoulders.

"i bet you taste like chicken," sokka mutters, glaring at the lemur who chitters, looking at sokka with its green big doe eyes.

💧

"there she is," sokka says as the six of them are getting closer to kyoshi island. "giant, scary lady," momo chitters, looking at the statue.

"woah," y/n mumbles. she looked scary...amongst other things.

💧

the three water tribe siblings and one air nomad walk against the gravel, standing right in front of the statue.

"oh," sokka says, walking towards the door which is apart of the statue. "check this out," he opens the door, easily just going in.

"bro, are you serious?" y/n says.

"should he just go in there?" katara asks her older sister. y/n shrugs. sokka has his own mind.

y/n feels two arms grab her, leaving her immobile. she turns her head, seeing a girl with bright make up and a golden headpiece giving her a harsh stare.

"katara, aang! look out!" she shouts. but she's too late. another girl has already grabbed her younger sister.

aang flips over a girl, who was trying to grab him. he lands in the middle of a circle, looking around.

"sokka!"

"what? what's happening?" sokka says, exiting the statue door. "hey!" he says, pointing at the kyoshi warrior's who are holding both his sisters hostage. but another kyoshi warrior flips him onto the ground. he grunts as he lands on the floor.

"you are trespassing on sacred ground," the kyoshi says, looking down at sokka.

"stop! you're making a mistake!" katara yelps.

"he's the avatar!" y/n shouts, struggling against the grip of the arms.

"ridiculous," one of the kyoshi warrior state. "there would have been signs if he was the avatar," the eyes of the statue, go a blinding white as it looks down on aang.

everyone looks up, eyes wide open.

"i think that might be a sign,"

💧

"it's been a long time since we've had visitors," yukari says as she's sat opposite the gaang. her daughter and some other kyoshi warriors behind her. "and for good reason," y/n looks around discretely. "for a hundred years, kyoshi island has remained safe from the ravages of war by keeping ourselves out of it,"

many pepole of the kyoshi island stand behind the gaang, waiting for their verdict.

"we expect the outside world to do the same," yukari continues.

"we're not here to cause any trouble," aang says. "all i want is to learn more about avatar kyoshi. isn't that what this place is about? keeping her memory alive?"

"please, we're not a threat," y/n speaks up.

"maybe not," yukari says, looking at the strangers. "but the next visitors might be. we can't start making exceptions,"

"we're not just any visitors," katara says. "he's the avatar,"

"according to you and a few reflections of a statue,"

"i know you're scared," aang starts. "i dn't know what life has been like here. to be honest, i don't know what life has been like anywhere. i've been away for a while. but where i'm from, people help each other. i know i don't belong here. that's something i've been feeling a lot lately, but if you can help me, if i can learn to be the avatar, maybe i could bring the place i knew, a world were people were happier, back,"

yukari looks at to the strangers, her daughter dropping to her level. y/n watches as they speak, seeing the way that they talk to each other. how she wishes that it could have been her and her mother, instead.

sokka looks at suki, shyly as she looks back with a small smile playing on her lips.

"i'm reminded that kyoshi herself often benefited from the kindness of strangers," yukari says. "and as the avatar, she believed in helping those who could not help themselves. so we will open our village to our guests...for forty eight hours," she concludes. "i trust that you will respect the limits of our generosity,"

aang nods with a smile, katara doing the same. y/n nudges sokka as she bows, sokka bowing his head at the head of the village.

only forty eight hours? not that much trouble can be caused in forty eight hours, right?
