Chapter 6
Lea walked into the SSC room, a wave of weariness washing over her. Stacks of paperwork for the upcoming festival greeted her, a daunting reminder of the duties that awaited her. She needed a break, a chance to unwind, but the looming responsibilities kept her tethered to her desk.
Her mind also replayed Lucian's antics from earlier, a simmering frustration gnawing at her. She couldn't understand him, his moods shifting like the wind. One moment he was charming, the next he was infuriating.
She shoved the paperwork into her backpack and headed out of the room, needing a moment of peace. Her locker, as always, was a testament to her popularity, filled with love letters and chocolates. She sighed, picking them up and stashing them in her bag. She appreciated the sentiment, but the sheer volume of it was overwhelming.
She was relieved to hear her classes had been canceled. It meant she had time to catch up on her piano lessons, and perhaps make up for her absence yesterday. The thought of her mother's anger filled her with dread.
Just as she was settling into the thought of a quiet afternoon, her phone buzzed.
Lea glanced at it and saw a text from an unknown number.
Got your digits. Give me a ring when your class ends.
- Lucian
Lea saved his number, a smile touching her lips. He was persistent, that much was certain. She texted him back, explaining that she was free for the day due to a faculty meeting.
Moments later, another message popped up.
Lucian:
Meet me outside.
Lea gathered her things and rushed out. A vivid memory flashed in her mind - the terrifying encounter with the three men and the cloaked figure who saved her. He’d disappeared as quickly as he had arrived, leaving her with a lingering sense of gratitude and a profound sense of unease.
She found Lucian leaning against a sleek Ford Ranger Raptor, his presence radiating a quiet confidence that made her heart skip a beat. He looked like a rebellious prince, a wild spirit caught in a world that wasn’t meant for him.
“Hey,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. He met her gaze, his eyes reflecting a depth of emotion that she couldn’t decipher.
Lucian opened the door for her, a surprising act of chivalry that took her aback. She slipped into the seat, feeling an inexplicable pull toward him, a sensation that made her feel both nervous and excited.
He started the engine, a low rumble echoing through the car. Silence fell between them, a heavy weight that made Lea uncomfortable. She pulled out the stack of love letters and chocolates from her bag, attempting to distract herself.
As she flipped through the notes, a wave of amusement washed over her. These boys were so earnest, so eager to express their feelings, but their words often fell flat. They were penned with an earnestness that sometimes veered into awkwardness, their expressions of love falling short of genuine sincerity.
"So, princess, you have a lot of boys tailing your shadow, huh?" Lucian chuckled, his voice laced with a hint of amusement.
"Stop calling me names," she snapped. "It's just a friendly letter, Lucian."
"Friendly letter, huh? Don't be so naive. They're confessing their love to you. That's what boys do."
Lea snorted. "What do men do then?" she asked, her eyes meeting his.
"Boys watch porn and masturbate. Men? Nah, they're up to sex for pleasure."
Lea’s jaw dropped. "Please don't say things like that. Keep them to yourself."
Lucian laughed, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "You're so innocent, Lea. You don't know the real world. You're stuck in your own little bubble."
"If you have any decency or respect, you would stop. You don't know me or the struggles I've been through. So, could you please stop with the snide remarks? I don't care."
He fell silent, his gaze fixed on the road. Lea stared out the window, frustration welling up inside her.
She couldn’t understand Lucian. He was a confusing mix of charm and arrogance, and every word that came out of his mouth was a challenge, a provocation.
Lea, feeling restless and suffocated, ignored Lucian’s presence as she stepped out of the car. She couldn't bring herself to meet his gaze, too embarrassed by her earlier outburst.
She started towards her room, Lucian following close behind. She paused as he spoke.
"I’m sorry,"
Lea froze, caught off guard by Lucian's sudden apology. It was a jarring shift from his earlier brash behavior.
He was an enigma, a whirlwind of contradictory actions. One moment he was a charming, albeit arrogant, presence, the next he was spewing hurtful words, and then, just as quickly, he was offering a half-hearted apology.
His unpredictable nature was a constant source of confusion, leaving her constantly on edge.
"Be honest and sincere with your sorry next time, Lucian," she said, her voice firm. "Saying sorry is like trying to make the impossible possible. Even if you apologize a hundred times, I know you'll do it again. It's a vicious cycle."
He sighed, his shoulders slumping. "You're right. I made a mistake. I'm sorry."
Lea simply nodded, her expression unreadable. She was tired of his apologies, tired of his inconsistent behavior.
She stood before her bedroom door, a sense of distance settling between them. Lea gave him a polite smile before turning the handle and stepping inside. She closed the door behind her, a barrier between them.
While she wasn't angry, she was hurt and disappointed. His words earlier had stung. She hadn't realized he saw her so poorly, so superficially. But, deep down, a part of her understood.
Perhaps it was because they had only met the night before. Or maybe it was because their first encounter had been so charged, so fraught with the unspoken tensions of their family history.
People were quick to judge, to draw conclusions based on appearances, status, and limited knowledge.
Lucian, for all his charm, was no different. His apologies felt hollow, like empty gestures that didn't truly address the hurt he caused. He was a jerk, a confusing, contradictory mix of charm and cruelty. And, despite his apology, he was still a mystery, a puzzle she was struggling to solve.
