Chapter 5
Lea stared at the three-wheeled contraption in front of her, a mix of excitement and apprehension bubbling inside her.
"We're going to ride this thing, right?" she asked, her voice laced with both curiosity and a hint of trepidation.
Lucian, ever the master of a knowing smirk, raised a brow. "Yes, princess. We're going to ride that vehicle. Got a problem with that?"
"Is it safe?" she asked, her gaze lingering on the rickety contraption. "It looks like it might fall apart if you even breathe too hard on it."
"You're always safe with me," he assured her, his voice a low rumble that sent a shiver down her spine.
Lea, ever the obedient daughter, followed him onto the contraption, a feeling of unease settling in her stomach. She wasn't sure why her mother had chosen this unconventional mode of transportation, but she was ready for another adventure with her mysterious cousin.
The air was filled with a haze of dust as the vehicle lurched forward. Lea's eyes watered, but the feeling of fresh air against her face was invigorating.
The vehicle came to a sudden stop. A group of men approached, each one hopping onto the crowded contraption. Lea found herself sandwiched between two of them, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She caught Lucian's eye, and something in his gaze made her feel uneasy.
"Please stop at the corner!" he called out to the driver, cutting short the uneasy silence. The vehicle screeched to a halt, and Lucian gestured for Lea to step out.
"Why are we getting off?" she asked, confused.
"Shit happens," he said, his words laced with a casual disregard for her sensibilities.
"Don't swear! It's bad," she chided him, a hint of amusement in her voice.
"Innocent girl, we have here, huh?" he teased, his smirk widening.
Lea's temper flared, but she bit back her retort. "Will you stop calling me that?" she retorted, her voice laced with a new-found confidence.
"Innocent, now feisty," he laughed, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
Lea rolled her eyes. "This is not a joke."
She stomped her foot, kicking a pebble at the edge of the road. A black Ducati, sleek and powerful, pulled up beside them. The owner tossed Lucian the keys, who caught them effortlessly.
Lea gasped as Lucian climbed onto the bike, his presence radiating a raw energy that sent shivers down her spine.
"Come on," he said, motioning for her to join him.
"Me? Ride this?" she asked, pointing to the bike in disbelief. She had never ridden anything like it, her life dictated by the rules of her mother's world.
"Are you deaf?" Lucian asked, his voice laced with a mix of amusement and impatience.
"I-It's my first time okay?!" she stammered.
"Darn! Always your first time together with me. Get on. I won't drop you."
Defeated, Lea obeyed, reaching for Lucian's outstretched hand. His grip was firm and reassuring, and soon she was seated behind him, his strong arms wrapping around her waist.
Lea's heart hammered in her chest as they sped off, the wind whipping through her hair. The world blurred into a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors and sounds.
"Lucian! Slow down, please!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the roar of the engine.
She felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment as the people in the cars they passed by gave them curious glances.
"Why would I?" he asked, his voice a deep rumble that resonated in her ear.
"My skirt is practically flying off!" she yelled, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Fuck! You should have told me earlier!" Lucian cursed, his laughter sending a jolt through Lea. He slowed the bike, bringing it to a stop.
Lea was gasping for breath, her cheeks flushed with a mix of excitement and embarrassment. Lucian's face was a mix of amusement and a hint of concern.
He helped her off the bike, his gaze lingering on her as he pulled off his leather jacket and handed it to her.
"Use this to cover your legs," he instructed, his voice softer than before.
Lea nodded, a small smile gracing her lips. It was a small gesture, a gesture that seemed to bridge the chasm between their two worlds.
Lea secured the jacket around her waist, its leather a welcome barrier against the wind. Lucian, his gaze intense, scanned her from head to toe before a small nod of approval passed his lips. He climbed back onto his Ducati, his presence radiating an almost magnetic pull. Hesitantly, Lea followed, the world blurring into a rush of colors as they sped away.
He sensed her nervousness, though, and slowed the bike to a more manageable pace. The journey seemed to fly by, and soon they were pulling up in front of Lea's school.
Lea stepped off the bike, her heart pounding with a mixture of adrenaline and relief. Lucian stood leaning against his bike, arms crossed, his stance radiating a casual confidence that made her insides flutter.
His gaze swept over her, lingering on her face, making her self-conscious.
"T-thank you," she mumbled, her cheeks flushing.
He'd been a jerk, but she couldn't deny the kindness in lending her his jacket.
She removed it, her fingers brushing against his leather. He took it back, his eyes never leaving hers.
Lea gasped as he leaned forward, his hand reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. Her mother would be furious, but she was too stunned to react. The gesture, so simple yet so intimate, felt like a jolt of electricity.
"I'm sorry," he said, a sigh escaping his lips.
His apology was genuine, a stark contrast to his earlier arrogance. But he was still a mystery, his moods shifting like the wind.
Lea gently pushed his hand away, taking a step back. "It's o-okay. I'm late. Thanks for the ride."
He nodded curtly, his gaze never leaving hers. Lea turned to go, but his voice stopped her.
"Take care, cousin."
The word felt strange, like a new layer to their complicated relationship. He revved the engine, his gaze unwavering, before speeding away.
Lea stood there, her heart a tangled knot of confusion, fear, and a flicker of something she couldn't name.
She was a prisoner in her own life, a pawn in her mother's game, and now she was tangled with a man who was just as much of a puzzle as she was.
The encounter left her with more questions than answers. Was she falling into another cage, or was this the beginning of something unexpected, something that might, just might, lead her to the freedom she so desperately craved?
