Chapter 1
The final bell echoed through the classroom, signaling the end of another day. Lea shoved her books into her bag, her heart pounding with the familiar dread of being late for piano practice. Her mother's wrath was a force of nature, and being late was a surefire way to unleash it.
Lea pushed a stray strand of hair from her face, her mind already racing. She was known as Lea Awsman, daughter of the town's biggest star, and a successful businessman. She was the president of their prestigious school, always smiling sweetly, the perfect image of privilege.
But behind the facade, Lea felt trapped. She had everything money could buy, but it couldn't buy her what she truly craved: love and freedom. She was expected to be a certain way, to live up to the expectations of her parents, who cared more about appearances and their reputation than about her happiness.
Her driver, who was usually punctual, was nowhere in sight, and panic started to creep in. Lea knew her mother wouldn't hesitate to berate her with sharp words, even if it meant hurting her feelings.
They didn't understand her need for a simple life, a family that embraced her for who she was, not for what she represented. They didn't see the emptiness behind her carefully crafted smile.
Lea glanced at her phone - dead. A classmate had borrowed it for a presentation, and while she was happy to help, it was a small reminder of her lack of control. Even a simple phone call was denied to her.
Walking to school was out of the question - it would be a "disgrace" to their reputation. Lea was a prisoner of her own gilded cage, a puppet controlled by her parents' ambitions and the insatiable hunger for wealth.
Lea felt a pang of sadness. She had everything, but she had nothing. She just wanted to be herself, to be loved for who she was, not for the image they created.
She sighed, a deep, heavy sigh that carried the weight of her unspoken pain. She just wanted a simple life, filled with genuine love and the freedom to be herself. But for now, she was just Lea Awsman, a girl trapped in a world of privilege, yearning for a life she couldn't have.
Lea's luck seemed to change. As she stood outside the school, her phone dead and her driver nowhere in sight, a guard approached. With her usual bright smile, she asked if she could borrow his phone.
The guard, a kind man with a slightly cracked phone, readily agreed. Lea dialed the number of their house, hoping to reach one of the maids.
"Hello?" a familiar voice answered. It was Ate Inia, one of the housekeepers.
"Ate! It's Lea," she said, explaining her predicament.
"My driver hasn't arrived yet, and it's getting late. Could you please tell Ricky to pick me up instead?"
Ate Inia expressed surprise, stating that Kuya Paing, their usual driver, had left earlier to fetch her. Lea's smile faded. Kuya Paing often took shortcuts, sometimes getting caught in traffic.
"Maybe he got stuck," she offered, feeling a pang of worry.
As Lea finished the call, she thanked the guard and returned his phone. He apologized, saying he had to rush home due to an emergency, and wished her well.
Alone in the darkening sky, a shiver ran down Lea's spine as she saw three men approaching. They walked unevenly, their movements unsteady, their faces flushed with alcohol. Panic seized her as they headed directly towards her.
Lea scanned her surroundings frantically, desperate for help, but there was no one in sight. Her heart pounded against her ribs as fear flooded her senses. She was frozen, her legs refusing to obey her panicked commands.
Just as the men drew closer, a figure emerged from the shadows, moving with a swift and practiced grace. Lea watched in stunned silence as the figure, cloaked in darkness, delivered a series of blows, sending the men reeling.
The cloaked figure turned towards Lea, his face still hidden. "You're safe," he said, his voice gruff yet somehow comforting.
Lea could only stammer out a thank you. The figure didn't reply, fading back into the darkness as quickly as he had appeared.
Just then, Ricky pulled up in the car. He had been sent by Ate Inia after Lea's phone call.
"You're safe..." The words echoed in Lea's mind, a testament to the unexpected savior who had emerged from the shadows.
She didn't know who he was, but she would never forget his swift actions, the way he had protected her without a word. He had saved her, leaving her with a sense of gratitude and a lingering mystery.
