Chapter Forty-Two: Broken Hearts
"Even when the sun- ahh! No...uhh..." Kapua quickly grabs a red crayon and scribbles out the 'words' he was writing on a card.
I'm pretty sure he'd be able to see better if he moved that hat up; It's completely covering his eyes.
He crumples the paper up and throws it onto the tower of other ruined cards he's made.
"That's a hundred and five now," Tiko mumbles.
I don't know what his problem is, but he's been nothing but rude and nasty to Isabelle all day. Like he has anything to be mad about, all he does is fly through Tsunami Canyon and be annoying.
I have no idea what Tula sees in him.
"Why do we have to wait for them to get here?" Tiko complains dramatically, "Why can't we just look for them?" He points a wing at Kapua, "And who's this kid?"
He peers at the paper that Pua is scribbling on, "She doesn't even know how to write."
Pua glares at him and hides the paper, "He."
Tiko chuckles and tips his fedora, "Alright, kid. Go find your mother, I'm sure she can tell you what gender is."
"I would if I had one!"
Tiko instantly regrets what he said, "Sweet Arceus! I was kidding! No need to say things like that! Aw, jeez, I'm sorry."
Isa slowly turns to him and sighs for about a minute before speaking, "Good job, Tiko. First, you act like a jerk and then, you make the child cry." She claps slowly, which only seems to anger the Toucannon more.
Tiko flaps his wings in anger, causing the pile of paper to fall over, "At least I don't talk to rocks and dead people!"
Kapua frowns and stares at all of the paper in sadness, "My tower..." He mumbles.
Isa opens her mouth to say something, "Yeah, I got nothing."
Suddenly, Tula, Peanut, and finally Rudy, come tumbling into the stables.
Tula, who is covered in water from who knows where, is flying frantically in circles around the stable, "I'm so sorry!" She cries apologetically, "I was surfing in Melemele and then I got lost so I-"
"It's ok." Isa replies quickly, "Now, come down here. I have to tell you guys something."
Tula lowers herself down to the ground as everyone else huddles together in a wide circle.
"So-" Isa begins.
"Wait!" Tula shouts looking around, "We can't start without Nightshade."
Tiko sighs, "She's sick, remember?"
"Hey!" Isa interrupts them, "Would you just listen to me?"
The two nod as Isa clears her throat, "So, I think I should start with the most important thing. Miracle's in jail for attacking Hershel."
Tiko squawks in disbelief, "Why'd she do that!?"
"Because-" She pauses to think, "Well, how do I word this?"
Everybody awaits her answer.
"He killed Nightshade," She says bluntly. "I don't know how else I could've said that."
Tiko and Tula share shocked looks, "Uhhh....Is this a joke?" Tiko asks quietly.
"Nope. She's gone," Isa replies nonchalantly, "But, you can mourn later. I need to tell you about that Salandit."
She points to Kapua who waves nervously, "Hi."
Tiko scoffs, "Who are you? Nightshade's replacement?" He turns to Isa, "She looks like a mutated snowman." He whispers just loud enough for Pua to hear.
"Hey! I do not," He squeaks.
Isa sighs, "Leave him alone-"
"Him!?" Tiko interrupts, "That's a girl, Isabelle. She has a voice like that of a mouse's."
I can tell Isa is trying her hardest not to kill Tiko right now.
"Just call him 'he'! It doesn't matter! For the love of Arceus!"
Tiko is silent after that.
"Finally!" She sighs, "Now, this is Kapua."
Rudy's ears perk up, "Kapua?" He inquires, "Nightshade said she had a daughter named Kapua."
Tiko and Tula exchange looks before Tiko bursts out into laughter, "Daughter!" Tiko sputters, "Nightshade doesn't have any kids! Last time I checked, reproduction doesn't work like that."
"No, really?" Rudy huffs, "It's not like she wanted to have a kid."
Tiko instantly stops laughing and pulls himself together, "Oh. Right. You should've said that from the start!"
Tiko is leaving a terrible impression
Tula pats him on the back before turning back to Isa, "Wait. You said we had jobs to do?"
Isa nods, "You see, I don't think Nightshade just 'got sick' I think someone had something to do with it. So, Leafeon, Kapua and I will be traveling to WaveClan, Primarina Island, and Violet Flame territory to see if we can find anything out."
Peanut looks around, "But what do we do?" He whispers.
"Well, Peanut, you're gonna hold down the fort while I'm gone. Make sure no one kills anyone."
Tula and Tiko, I need you two to try and distract Miracle if she ever does end up getting out of jail. She can't find out that I left." The two share determined looks before turning back to Isa and nodding.
"Wait." Tiko says, "Can I claw Hershel's eyes out?"
"No."
"Please? Just a quick peck?"
"No. They'll lock you up in a cage and test you for rabies or something."
Tiko frowns, "Fine. At least I can poop on his head."
Isa rolls her eyes before turning to Rudy, "And Rudy," She says slowly, "You rest. I know you and Nightshade were close. Actually, Peanut."
Peanut perks his head up.
"You can stay with Rudy. Make friends with him. I expect a blooming friendship by the time I get back."
"Ok..." He says, going over to stand next to small Mudsdale.
Isabelle nods before waddling outside motioning for us to follow her.
The group follows before branching off to go do their own things.
We, however, get to plan for the long journey ahead with Lilo's and Percy's help.
"Pua gets seizures, you know?" Percy points out.
Isa shrugs as she stuffs supplies into a large pack, "What am I supposed to do?"
Percy places a bag of-
"Is that Marijuana!?" Isa exclaims, "You want me to give this child weed?"
"It's for medical uses, you dumb mermaid!" Percy yells defensively.
She pushes it away and continues packing, "I am not giving him weed."
Lilo scoffs, "You're not his mother."
"Like you are. He doesn't call you 'mom' he calls you Lilo."
"Then we should let his mother choose," She growls.
Pua smiles and jumps up to grab the bag, "That's a great idea! Leafeon, what should I do?" He shakes the bag in front of my face.
Lilo rolls her eyes, "You can't be serious. If Nightshade couldn't raise him when she was sixteen what makes you think you can?"
"Just as long as Pua doesn't end up like Tidal Wave," Isa says while putting the pack on, "I think he'll be just fine." That smug smirk on her face says all.
Lilo glares at her, "You really like starting fights, don't you? Remember, it was conflict that got Opal killed."
Isa takes the bag from Kapua and tosses in Lilo's face, "Have fun with your weed."
Before Lilo can say anything, Isa is already on her way, "We're wasting time standing here." She shouts at us, "We have to get to Lush Jungle by nightfall."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'We have to get to Lush jungle by nightfall' she said.
Why are we walking?
We've wasted two days just traveling to Akala Island.
She can fly and she says she's in a hurry.
I just don't understand.
She doesn't have feet, I have three legs and Pua can't stop messing with bugs and we keep on losing him.
But we did make it to the Lush Jungle.
We're currently on the outskirts of WaveClan territory, thinking of a plan.
Well, Isa is.
Kapua ran off again and I'm losing my mind looking for him.
What if he fell down and hurt something?
What if WaveClan found him?
What if..what if..what if a fire breaks out and he burns to ashes?!
I never thought I would get so attached to him.
It really does make me wonder why WaveClan hates Salandit and Salazzle so much.
Kapua is a lot like his mother in some ways.
He likes to talk and make friends, he has a strange fascination with bugs..uhh I don't know where he got that from but, he does like water.
He is also a goofball who seems to love to break rules and not listen to Isa.
I guess I can understand why she doesn't like him.
I feel like she has a deep hatred for him but, it's probably just my imagination.
So, back to the whole Kapua situation.
When we made it to Lush Jungle and Pua was nowhere to be found, Isabelle did not share my concern, which I found quite annoying.
"Jerry can be his babysitter," Isa says with uninterest.
I shake my head, frantically searching under every bush and shrub for him, "A Joltik can't do anything to help him if he gets hurt. It doesn't have any hands!"
She shrugs, "That's Pua's problem...or yours."
"Mom!" A faint voice calls.
Pua bursts out of the bushes with his hands full of Fomantis and Dewpider. "Look at all of these things I found!" He sets them gently on the ground and they look up at him with their eyes wide. He lays down in front of them, "I really like this pink one." He says patting the Fomantis' head, "He's so cute! And the spider reminds me of Jerry only more scary."
Isabelle rolls her eyes and looks up at the evening sky, "That's all nice and good, but I can't think of a plan with you talking the whole time."
Pua frowns but pulls himself off the ground and waves his new friends goodbye before adjusting his hat and smiling.
I always get this weird feeling when he smiles.
Scratch that, when he looks at me.
I really wish I didn't see her in him.
It'd be so easy to talk to him.
"Leafeon." Isa's stern voice snaps me out of my thoughts, "Less daydreaming more walking."
"But Primarina don't walk," Pua states, "They waddle!"
Isa glares at him before whipping her head around and moving forward.
Pua looks down at the ground and kicks a small pebble, "I don't think she likes me very much."
"T-That's not true," I say in an effort to cheer him up, "She's just...hard to get along with."
He shrugs before looking thoughtfully up at the sky, "Mom, can I ask you a question?"
Nobody ever asks me anything, "Uhh s-sure."
"Do you love me?"
The comfortable answer would be yes.
But that would be a lie.
I would use the word strongly like.
I don't hate Pua, but I don't love him either.
Love is a very strong word.
I've never loved anyone.
Until Nightshade came around.
If Pua is her child, does that mean I should love him by default?
That can't be fair.
In a strange way, I feel like he's...replacing her.
"Is that a no?" Pua's saddened voice instantly makes me feel bad.
His eyes are full of pain as he tries his hardest not to cry, "You wish my mom were here instead of me, don't you?"
"I-I..." I look away from him in shame, "I don't know."
"Yes you do!" He yells getting Isa's attention.
She groans loudly before waddling over to us, "What now?"
Kapua shakes his head and wipes away some stray tears, "We were talking."
"Can you talk about something else?"
"No. I asked her if she loved me."
Isa scoffs and rolls her eyes, "She obviously doesn't-"
"Isabelle!" I shout, "That's not true!"
"Liar. You don't love him. You wish he were Nightshade."
Pua frowns, but I can see some sympathy in his eyes, "I wish mama were here, too."
Isabelle shakes her head and turns away from us, "You barely even knew her..." She mumbles.
I glance over at her.
Her eyes are glued to the ground and clouded in thought.
Why is she acting so strange?
So nasty and hostile?
She wasn't like this yesterday.
"Why do you hate me?" Pua asks in a sudden burst of anger, "It's not my fault she died!"
Isabelle glares at him.
I don't think I've ever seen her so angry.
"It might not have been your fault, but we're still stuck here with you. If you want to know why I dislike you so much, it's because you act like you knew Nightshade. She gave you away; I really do wonder why-"
"Isabelle, stop," I mumble.
Kapua is taking every word she's saying to heart and she knows it.
As a matter of fact, she sorta sounds like Tidal Wave.
She turns to me, her eyes alive with a green blaze, "No. You stop. I think the child should know." She turns back to Kapua slowly getting closer to him, "It's true. If she loved you, she would've kept you, and we wouldn't be stuck with you."
"Isabelle!"
"She didn't want you, you were a mistake. Do you really think anybody would want to keep a mistake-"
"STOP!"
The sun begins to fall over the hills, replacing the orange sky with stars.
Just as quickly the world had shifted from day to night, so did Isabelle.
In just a split second she snapped.
She glares at me, "She shouldn't even be here," She mutters, "You were never this eager to protect your girlfriend when she was alive, were you?"
I look down at my paws and she scoffs, "Whatever." She mutters before slithering away from Lush Jungle, "I'm going to Brooklet Hill."
I look back at Kapua who shakes his head, "I-I'm ok," he hiccups before scampering after Isa, "I'm ok."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brooklet Hill.
The last time we were here was when Nightshade asked Isa to sing for her.
I still remember that moment.
The sun was shining on the water and everything was so happy and bright.
But now, it's dark and foreboding.
It's quiet and all I feel when I walk through the silent place is emptiness.
Isa silently slips into the water, not saying a thing.
Kapua sticks his head in the water and pulls it out, grabbing his hat with his tail before it can float away, "What is she doing under there?"
I shrug, "I don't know."
Pua grabs Jerry and hovers him over the water, "Mom? You wanna see a cool trick?"
I look over at the Salandit.
He's smiling, but it's painfully forced.
I muster up a reassuring smile, "Uh, sure."
He turns to the water and gently places Jerry on top of it.
Jerry instantly freezes as he floats farther out into the small lake.
I'm pretty sure he's going to fall out into the sea if nobody does anything.
Suddenly, the water in the lake shoots up high into the sky.
If you squint hard enough, you can see Jerry having a heart attack as he falls.
Kapua, who apparently has amazing jumping skills, leaps over the water, catches Jerry and lands safely on the other side of the lake.
The most amazing feat is that his hat stayed on.
Oh, Isabelle's there, too.
But she was unfazed, diving gracefully and effortlessly back into the water.
I lean over the deck and look at the shadow moving under the water.
She's just swimming in circles.
What was the point of even coming to this place?
Lush Jungle was right there.
I think Isa might be losing her mind; she never makes strange decisions like this without having a reason for them.
"Mom!" Pua waves from the other side of the lake, "I'm gonna ju-"
He's cut off by the water shooting back up in the air.
Instead of landing in the water, Isa lands on the deck, hard.
I nearly fell into the water.
After I gain my balance, I notice something is wrong.
Isa isn't moving.
My heart drops as the familiar feeling of dread clouds my thoughts.
"Isabelle!" I frantically shake her, "Isabelle, wake up!"
Nothing.
I take a step back, my body shaking.
Kapua leaps over to us and pokes the Primarina, "Is she dead?"
Jerry jumps on her and uses Discharge without warning.
I'm pretty sure it did more harm than good.
But, at least she's awake.
Kapua takes a long look at her, "I think he broke her." He whispers.
"I-I can h-hear you," She croaks, pulling herself up.
The electricity still lingers in her body, evidenced by the small sparks that surround her body.
She convulses violently when a large wave hits.
Not to mention the stuttering.
What kind of paralysis is this?
I highly doubt a tiny thing like a Joltik could cause this.
She takes a look back at the now raging water, "Coming here w-was a bad idea."
"What did you do?" I whisper.
"I-" Her eyes squeeze shut as another wave of electricity runs throughout her body, "I threw the lapis in the lake. I d-don't want anyt-thing to do w-w-" She falls to the ground, unable to speak or move.
Her breath comes out in ragged and pained pants.
Kapua looks on in worry, "Oh no. I messed up again." He places Jerry on his head and looks around, "I know where we could take her."
I gently place my paw on her head.
A fever?
This quickly?
I turn to Pua, "Where?"
He grabs Isa's bag and pulls out a book, showing me the cover, "In Lush Jungle, there should be some plants that can help with whatever this is."
"It's paralysis, and we can find a Cheri Berry anywhere."
Kapua shakes his head, "No, Jerry's electricity is different from most. I think it's so powerful because he rarely ever fights or lets it out. A Cheri Berry won't do anything to help her."
I turn to him, "How do you know this?"
"When I was little, I vaguely remember something like this happening to Lilo when she made him mad." He turns to the water and pulls out the lapis that floated to the top.
He places it in the bag before turning back to me, "When she can stand again, we'll leave."
He gets on all fours and trots away, his tail held high.
He gets to the entrance before turning back to me, in a way a nervous Lillipup would, before turning back and sitting down, waiting patiently.
I nudge Isa gently with my muzzle.
She sighs, "Yeah, y-yeah, no need to treat me like a baby."
She slowly and shakily rises only to collapse when another wave hits.
This time, I help her up and nearly fall over because she is very heavy.
Or maybe I'm just weak.
Because Kapua is leading the way, quite proudly might I add, I have to practically carry her the whole way.
She got heavier and heavier with every step.
When we reached Lush Jungle, we had to find a place where she could rest.
We settled on a large clearing hidden by a thick cluster of brambles and thistles.
Maybe it would've been best if we stayed at Brooklet Hill.
I'm pretty sure if someone has a fever, the worst thing you could do is make them more stressed than they already are.
Wait.
This was stupid!
WaveClan is here, Father constantly sends out patrols to scout out the borders.
Isabelle is the only one who can actually fight.
If the Clan, or even worse, Father, finds us, we're dead.
That's what I get for listening to a child.
Pua digs into the bag and pulls the book back out.
He sits on a small rock and begins flipping through the pages.
He's humming as he 'reads.'
"Kapua? How old are you?"
He looks up from the book and smiles, "I'm two!"
I blink, "Let me guess, you have no idea how to read."
His shoulders sag, "But it looked like I did, right?" He asks with a wide smile.
Isabelle groans, "Please just kill me. Feed me a nightshade plant."
"A tomato!" Pua exclaims.
I have no idea what just happened.
I take the book and flip through the pages until I land on a tall plant with purple flowers, "We could use Skullcaps. They seem to fix everything wrong in your life."
"Those don't g-grow around here." Isa mumbles, "Find plants that grow in tropical a-areas."
"'Awa," I say after a few minutes of searching, "Also known as Kava. It says that the 'Awa plant can help with stress and anxiety, almost acting like an alcoholic beverage...uhh."
"I'm 21 so, it's fine," Isa reassures me.
"Umm, ok. The next plant is called Green Ki. If we place one of the leaves in cold water, it can help with fevers. I'm pretty sure both of those grow around here."
I close the book and turn to hand it back to Pua only to discover him on the ground, shaking.
His eyes roll into the back of his head and he begins foaming at the mouth.
I back away from him, my eyes glued to the horrendous sight.
"Umm, Hello? Leafeon?"
"He's shaking..." I manage to say.
Isabelle bolts up and winces in pain before inspecting the Salandit, "He's having a seizure," She mutters, closing her eyes to subdue the pain, "It'll pass." She says slowly.
"What? We're not going to do anything?" I ask.
She sighs "No. We have t-to wait."
Clearly, this Primarina has no idea what she's saying.
The fever is speaking for her.
I extend my paw out to touch him only to have Isa bat it away, "Don't touch him!" She hisses before shaking, "You and this c-child are going to be the d-death of me."
I quickly draw my paw back, "I can't watch this," I whisper.
Isa sighs, "Fine, y-you can go look for the p-plants, I'll stay here. O-Oh, and for the love of Arceus, don't let a-anyone see you."
I nod and limp away, deeper into the forest, keeping my body low to the ground.
"Three-Legs, we can see you," A high-pitched voice shouts.
Ugh.
Not only did I get found, but I got found by the biggest loudmouth in this place
I sigh and slowly rise to my paws.
Standing a few inches away from me, is a battle-scarred Jolteon and a ragged, old Flareon.
Wild Spark now has a long scar on her left eye. It starts at the top of her eye and ends at her chest.
Based on how long the scar is, I'm guessing she's blind in that eye now.
In addition to the scar on her eye, she has smaller ones covering her body along with a very long and deep one on her side that I'm surprised she didn't die from.
Hawk Flame looks...terrible.
His once bright, fluffy, red fur is now dulled and unkempt.
He has little scars but his bushy fur is probably hiding them.
I notice that his front left paw is being held extremely close to his body.
I can still see it in all of his fur, though.
It's completely mangled with bits of skin hanging off of it.
If it weren't dark, I'm pretty sure I would be able to see bone.
Despite all of this, his eyes are still bright and warm.
I've always felt safe around the old tom.
He was the father I never had.
I guess that's why I didn't feel any fear when I heard Wild Spark speak.
"What happened to you two," I ask.
I don't really care about Wild Spark, her recklessness was the most likely cause of her injuries.
"A battle," Hawk Flame hisses.
"With some stupid pack of dogs." Wild Spark shares Hawk Flame's hostility, "They showed up out of nowhere, and because there's barely any water in this place, we had to fight them off until Tidal Wave could flood them out." She gazes at Hawk Flame, her eyes filled with pity and sympathy, something I never thought I would see from her, "He shouldn't have made Hawk Flame fight, he's too old and he almost died."
Hawk Flame shakes his head and proudly puffs out his chest, "I did fine in that fight." He croaks.
Wild Spark rolls her eyes and turns to me, "So..I...umm...I heard about your friend..."
My claws unsheath instinctively.
Is she serious?
Now, all of a sudden, she cares?
"Now that she's dead you care? You don't want to kill me anymore?" I growl.
Wild Spark looks around nervously, "Well, I mean, you're not sick or a threat anymore so, we can be friends again." She finishes it off with a smile.
The fakest smile she could have ever made.
"Friends? We're sisters, Wild Spark!" I shout.
Wild Spark looks at me with shock, "Shh! Not so loud!"
Hawk Flame shakes his head and limps over to me, "Don't listen to her, Leafeon. You know how she is." He purrs and sits next to me, "Why are you here?"
"I need to find an 'Awa plant and a Ki plant for Isabelle."
Wild Spark scrunches up her face, "That Primarina? No way-"
"I can find you one," Hawk Flame offers before slowly limping into the underbrush.
Wild Spark and I sit in dead silence until he returns with a large bundle of leaves.
Thank Arceus! The tension was unbearable.
He sets them down at my paws, "That should do it."
Wild Spark glares at him, "You wonder why Tidal Wave hates you."
"He hates me because I'm his father," He says with a smile, "Plus, don't you think the very least we could do for Leafeon is help her?"
"No." She says with a look of disgust, "She had her little Salazzle friend for that."
She turns away and dives into the bushes; she's probably going to tell Tidal Wave she saw me.
Hawk Flame licks the top of my head reassuringly, "I'll try my best to help you out." He purrs before following after the Jolteon.
He sets a paw into the underbrush before turning back to me, "I'm sorry about Nightshade. It's a shame she had to go the way she did."
I never thought I would hear anyone from WaveClan say they were sincerely upset about a hearing a Salazzle had died.
Especially if it was someone like Nightshade.
I smile warmly at the old tom, "Thank you, Hawk Flame."
He nods and smiles before finally heading back home.
I pick the leaves up and head back to Isabelle who is currently curled up around Pua as he sleeps.
She opens her eyes groggily, "D-d-did you-"
"Yes," I cut her off and set the 'Awa plants down in front of her, "I found them."
She eyes them suspiciously, "H-how did y-you find t-t-hese? I h-heard y-you talking."
I point my tail behind me, "Hawk Flame and Wild Spark. Wild Spark was a waste of time but Hawk Flame helped me."
She shrugs before eating the plant, "Y'know, t-these are s-supposed to be m-made in tea."
I take the Ki leaves over to a nearby stream, letting the cool water run over the leaves for about a minute before taking them back to Isa and placing them on her head.
I lie down next to her shaking frame, "I can't make tea." I say, holding back a yawn.
Today wasn't what I expected it to be.
Isabelle attacking Kapua like that was the worst part, though.
He's going to start believing that what she said is true.
"You should really apologize to Pua," I say cautiously
Isa sets her head down, "No. I wasn't l-lying when I said I don't w-want him here."
"There's nothing wrong with him. I like Pua, he's alright."
"He's s-some mistake that shouldn't h-have been born." She states, "Why w-would you want to keep a rape baby? I-if it were me, I would've killed it. A-and don't f-forget that N-Nightshade gave him away after she k-killed Opal. She couldn't take care of him and g-gave him to someone else who could. If s-she couldn't deal with the problem she brought into this world, then I shouldn't h-have to care about her kid. T-then, she has to go off and die, right after he shows up, leaving u-us to deal with this stupid thing!"
Her voice turns into a cry of pain, "This is w-why I don't get close to p-people. Because they always end up d-dying and I have to deal with t-their mistakes. The prophecy, Kapua, T-Tidal Wave, Violet. N-nobody's told her that Nightshade is dead. Guess who gets to be the bearer of bad n-news? Me! It's aways me!"
All I can do is listen.
She shakes her head and rolls onto her side with her back facing me, "I hate t-this stupid world. I'm s-so tired of hearing my father call Nightshade a m-murderer for killing Opal. Opal was disgusting, w-wanting to kill a child because they'll ruin your little prophecy? Sweet Arceus, I hate her; if s-she's going to a-act like that, s-she deserves to die. And I'm s-so sick of hearing Tidal Wave boast a-about his stupid daughter. You have two y-you know? He's homophobic and celebrated the fact t-that Nightshade died. O-Once Violet hears, there's g-going to be a war, not to mention what'll happen when she hears about Prince."
She shudders.
I can't tell if it's from her fever or from the fact that she's basically spilling her heart out.
"Poor Violet." She says with a sigh, "She d-doesn't deserve any of this. Nobody does...I j-just want to sleep."
Silence.
I try to push everything she said to the back of my mind as I lie my head down on my paws.
But, it fails to work; how can you ignore something like that coming from someone like her?
I take a look up at the sky.
If I look past the trees, I can see the stars shining and glimmering in the sky.
I wonder, which star is her?
I close my eyes and let the tears fall.
My quiet sobs fill the silent forest.
Perhaps the only one listening is the sky.
I feel someone lightly brush my tears away.
When I open my eyes, I see the hazy image of a smiling Salandit.
"Please don't cry." He pleads, "I hate seeing you sad. Lilo said that you're usually really happy." He stops and stares, "Uhh..do you need a hug? I give really good hugs!"
I take a long look at him before pulling him close in a maternal hug.
He returns the hug with a contented hum.
I pull away from him and wipe my tears away.
"Did you like the hug?"He asks eagerly.
I nod and he runs around in circles, "Yay! I did good for once."
I smile warmly at him, "You always do good, Kapua."
"But Isabelle got hurt because of me."
"That's karma for telling you Nightshade didn't love you."
He stares at the ground for a long time before speaking again, "Umm, I know I asked already but you never answered my question. D-do you love me?"
I pull him to me with my tail and muzzle him, "Yes, Kapua." I say as he lies down and snuggles closer to me.
I wait until I can hear his light snores before finally lying down, "I'll keep him safe, Nightshade. I promise."
