3 | Promises, Promises

Maya and Alaric had been training Elena in the woods for the past few hours. She asked Alaric if he could help her learn to fight so that when the next evil thing that showed up, vampire, werewolf or other, she would be able to defend herself. Although Maya isn't a vampire, she is a werewolf, a relatively strong one at that.

They were still training on the dummy considering Elena had yet to grasp the concept of staking. "The pressure of your punch ejects the stakes," Alaric showed her by fake punching the dummy.

"Easy enough," Elena said sounding a little too confident and attempting to stab the dummy but fails to do so, "That's weird." She tries again, but once again, fails, "Must be jammed or something."

"Let me see," Maya says taking the stakes, she then punches the dummy, "nope, not jammed. You need to start working out. Get some meat on your bones," she says jiggling Elena's arm.

"Catch," Alaric said, throwing what looked like a grenade at Elena, she caught it, "Surprise." She threw it in the air before it exploded, "This isn't a joke to me, Ric."

"You think I'm joking? Do you think any of those monsters are going to care if you're paying attention or not? They have no remorse, it's in their nature."

"Rude," Maya scoffed quietly causing Alaric to shoot her a look.

"You don't have to use pronouns. You can say Stefan," Elena retorted.

"Look, I understand why you want help, too many people have hurt you and you don't want that to happen again."

"You guys think I'm crazy. To believe that I can protect myself from a vampire who flipped the switch."

"I think you found a way to get out of bed this morning. And that makes you the strongest person I know. I think that you can do pretty much anything," Alaric explained before handing her back the sleeve with the stakes. Maya's ear perked up when she heard a noise coming from behind them.

"I'll be back," Maya rushed out quickly before going in the direction where she heard the noise. She walked on the balls of her feet in an attempt to quiet the noise of the crunching leaves but it didn't do much good. She turned around and came face to face with the devil himself.

"Hello, love," Klaus spoke with a smirk.

"Klaus, just the guy I didn't want to see. What are you doing here?"

"Just wandering, it's not the same as it used to be."

"Aren't you supposed to be gone?"

"I decided to come back for a small break."

"Right..." she said trailing off, "and you just happened to stumble upon us during your venturing?"

"Purely coincidental."

"Doubtful."

"Why don't you like me?"

"You just want one reason?" she retorted. She hadn't noticed, but he stepped closer to her and looked her straight in the eyes. "I think it's time that you remember," he said compelling her.

"What?" she began but soon understood when the memories came back to her.

"W-what happened?" Maya groaned and rubbed her temples attempting to ease the pain.

"I knocked you out," he responded simply, the mysterious man had a very evident British accent.

"You did what now? Why?" she said looking up at the very handsome man, but she had no idea who he was.

"You'll find out soon enough."

"Who are you?"

"Klaus." Hearing this, her eyes widened. "Relax, love, I'm not going to hurt you."

"How can I trust you?"

"You're just going to have to." And as crazy as it may have sounded, she did.

[next memory]

"Why are you doing this?" Maya asked.

"Because I have to."

"No, no you don't."

"I need to break the curse, I need to create more people like me."

"It's just you," she said as though everything all of the sudden made sense, "you're all alone."

[next memory]

"You're cute when you're half asleep," Klaus said leaning against the door frame that led to the room where Maya lay, slowly waking up.

She sat up and rubbing her eyes groggily. "When can I go home?" she mumbled.

"Soon."

[next memory]

"Please don't do this," Maya begged Klaus one last time.

"I already told you, I have to do this." She grabbed his arm before he could slip out the door, "Why are you being like this?"

"I don't want to be alone anymore," he said turning to leave but said one last thing before leaving, "You can go home now."

[next memory]

"What are you still doing here?" Klaus asked.

"I couldn't leave without making sure you were okay," Maya said looking down at her feet, "but now that I know, I'll leave."

She went to open the door but he grabbed her hand and looked right into her eyes, compelling her, "You won't remember anything that happened while you were here. You'll know that I took you and kept you here but you won't remember anything we said. If anyone asks, it's all a blur. You will remember when I tell you you can remember. Do you understand?"

Nodding her head, she walked out.

Maya opened her eyes, a little taken back by the sudden burst of memories that she had lost. She was about to speak when she noticed he had walked away.

"Are you okay?" A voice asked from behind her causing her to jump. She turned around to see it was just Ric. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Let's get back to training."

Caroline had been persisting that everyone has a good senior year, although it's a little difficult under the circumstances. Maya had arrived late because Tyler left her and she had to get a ride with her mom. She really needed her own car.

"I forgot about the bonfire," Maya said as she approached Caroline who was hanging up a sign that read 'Spirit Squad Back-to-School Bonfire.'

"You have to go. It's our first spirit squad event. It sets the bar for the whole year."

"Relax, I'll go."

"Thank you," she said letting out a sigh, she was about to say something else but was interrupted when Tyler kissed her.

"Get a room," Maya groaned.

"Happy first day," Tyler said but Maya could barely hear him over the stench of the blood.

"Tyler, is that blood?" Maya asked pulling at his shirt collar, Caroline made some comment but Maya couldn't hear her as she dragged him into the boys' bathroom.

"What's going on?" Tyler asked.

"Vampire 101, don't wear your breakfast to school!" Caroline shouted.

"Chill out. It was just a blood bag."

"From where?"

"Rebekah hooked me up."

"Rebekah? And what are you even talking to her for?"

"Klaus told her to keep watch on me. Protect his new asset."

"His what now?" Maya intervened.

"His new asset. I'm his first successful hybrid, that's freaking awesome."

"I think it's pronounced asshat. What the hell is wrong with you?" Maya asked before hitting him on the arm.

"Nothing is wrong with me, I'm just embracing the blessing Klaus gave me."

Maya scoffed before walking out of the bathroom, leaving Caroline to scold Tyler. She had no idea what was going on with him but what she did know was he needed to get it together before he lost Caroline.

"Welcome back seniors," Alaric said while writing AP American History on the chalkboard, "let's turn our brains back on by starting off talking about our country's founders, native americans."

"What about the Vikings?"

"There's no evidence that Viking explorers actually settled in the United States. Who are you?"

"My name's Rebekah. I'm new. And history's my favorite subject."

"Yeah, probably cause you've lived it," Maya mumbled quietly. Rebekah shot her head in Maya's direction and plastered a fake smile on her face before taking a seat to Maya's left.

"Oh come on, what did he do this time?" Maya questioned as she entered Alaric's classroom and saw Tyler's body sprawled out on the floor.

"He's been sired," Damon said for the second time that day.

"Meaning what exactly?"

"He feels loyal to Klaus because Klaus's blood created him."

"Fantastic."

"He'll seek acceptance from his master. It's really rare. But maybe not so much in hybrids."

"So how do I fix him?" Caroline piped up from her position behind him.

"Get a new boyfriend."

They explained the plan to Maya relatively fast. Essentially, Elena would trick Stefan and then give Alaric and her enough time to capture him. Damon would be distracting Rebekah and Caroline left and took Tyler home. I was mainly there for my inhuman strength.

Elena wandered off to the bleachers which was our cue to follow so we did. "Are you ever going to tell me what happened in the woods yesterday?" Alaric asked.

"No, because nothing happened."

"You've always been a bad liar, you know that, right?"

"Hmm," Maya hummed before turning her attention to Elena, who, as according to plan, fell off the bleachers.

Mentally thanking Stefan for catching her, she walked out with Alaric who shot him. Maya picked Stefan up by his arm, "Let's get him out of here before anyone sees."

Elena and Alaric nodded in agreement before they headed to Alaric's car.

Elena and Stefan sat in the back as Alaric and Maya talked momentarily outside of the car.

"Look, I know I'm being annoying, but I just want to make sure you're okay. When you came back yesterday, you seemed out of it."

"If I need anything, I will let you know, okay? Now let's get out of here."

He nodded before going to open the door but it was locked, he banged on the window, "Elena, open the door!"

All of the sudden, the car was up in flames. "No!" Maya shouted reaching toward the car. When she did this, the fire seemed to get calmer, which caused her to freak out and jump back making the fire grow back to its original size.

She ran up to the car, ignoring the pain she felt from the flames and broke the glass of the trunk. She quickly pulled Elena out and Stefan soon after. The three ran over to where Alaric stood and watched as the car blew up.

"I think you're going to need a new car," Maya remarked.

After bringing Elena home and dealing with Stefan, Maya went home, ready for bed.

"We should talk about what happened tonight," Alaric said entering Maya's room.

"How did you get in here and what's up with you and talking about everything?" He rolls his eyes and looks at her, expecting an answer.

"I don't know what happened. I was scared and it sort of just happened. Something is seriously wrong with me. You can't tell anyone, Ric."

"I won't."

"Promise?"

"Promise."
